Why won’t my PS5 recognize my PS2 disc? The answer depends on where you inserted it. Sony’s retail PS5 software does not play PlayStation 2 game discs, so a PS2 disc that does nothing in the normal PS5 interface is behaving as expected. A jailbroken PS5 running PS5SX2 is a different situation: that unofficial PCSX2 port has its own firmware, BIOS, game-format, optical-drive, and release-specific limitations.
First establish whether you are testing the disc in the standard PS5 menu or inside PS5SX2. Then confirm the emulator release, determine whether the game is on a DVD or CD, and check whether the current build expects to copy the disc rather than launch it directly. Only after those checks should you troubleshoot the PS5’s optical drive with media the console officially supports.
Start by separating a stock PS5 from a homebrew PS5
A PS2 disc in the normal PS5 interface
Sony’s CFI-1015A PlayStation 5 instruction manual states: “PlayStation® format software, PlayStation®2 format software, and PlayStation®3 format software cannot be played from a disc.” That means a retail PS5 will not install, launch, or recognize a PS2 game as playable through the standard home screen. The symptom is not, by itself, evidence that the disc or drive is defective.

Do not begin with a factory reset, a system-software reinstall, or an optical-drive repair when the only test is an unsupported PS2 disc. Those steps cannot add PS2 disc compatibility to Sony’s retail software.

A PS2 disc inside PS5SX2
If the console is already jailbroken and the disc is being opened from PS5SX2, troubleshoot the emulator instead. PS5SX2 describes itself as an unofficial PCSX2 port that runs natively on a jailbroken PS5. Its setup requires a homebrew-capable console, project-specific helper and mount components, a user-dumped PS2 BIOS, and games supplied by the user. The project does not include BIOS files, games, or keys.
Because this is not a Sony-supported application, the ordinary PS5 disc rules and the emulator’s rules are not the same. A disc can be unreadable to PS5SX2 even when the console can read an ordinary PS5 game, Blu-ray, or DVD.
Confirm the exact PS5SX2 release and console setup
Ask for four details before changing settings:
- the PS5SX2 version;
- the PS5 model and system-firmware version;
- whether PS5SX2 opens successfully; and
- the exact point of failure: no disc detection, a failed copy, a black screen, or a game that starts and then stops.
The project’s tested console and firmware combinations are listed on its official project page. Firmware combinations not listed there have not been tried, so an unlisted system should be treated as unverified rather than automatically compatible. The project’s tested-games table is also not a guarantee that every title will work.

The release page lists PS5SX2 2.03, released October 11, 2026. Version 2.02 notes from October 10 describe disc-copy progress and automatic handling of discs. These behaviors can change, so use the instructions for the build actually installed on the console rather than relying on a guide written for an older release.
Determine whether you are using an image file or a physical disc
Image-based games
PS5SX2’s README lists ISO, CHD, CSO, and ZSO game images. If you already have a properly created image, test that route first. A game image that launches establishes that the BIOS, emulator installation, and basic game configuration are working; it narrows the problem to the physical disc, drive access, or disc-copy feature.
Use your own legally obtained game dump and your own BIOS. The project does not supply either one. Keep the image in one of the formats listed by the current README, and verify that the file is complete and stored where the emulator expects games to be mounted.

Physical discs
For a physical disc, identify the optical format printed on the game case or disc. PS2 titles were released on both DVD and CD media. Independent reporting about PS5SX2 says the PS5’s built-in drive cannot read PS2 games released on CDs, while an external USB optical drive may be an option. That limitation was not established in Sony’s official materials or the project documentation reviewed here, so treat it as a build- and hardware-dependent report, not a universal promise.
Do not assume that every USB optical drive works. Confirm support for the exact PS5SX2 release, console firmware, and drive model before buying or configuring one. An external drive also does not make a stock PS5 compatible with PS2 software; it is relevant only to a homebrew emulator workflow that supports the device.
Understand copy and direct-drive behavior
PS5SX2 may not treat a physical disc like a normal console game. Version 2.02 release notes say that the shelf can show copy progress and that disc auto-play either copies a disc when necessary or starts an existing copy. If the application appears busy while progress is displayed, allow the operation to finish rather than repeatedly ejecting the disc.

Independent coverage describes direct drive play as experimental and disabled by default in the main project. Therefore, “the emulator does not start the game directly from the disc” can be an intentional version behavior. The supported route may be to copy the disc first and then launch the resulting game from the emulator’s library.
Use this troubleshooting sequence inside PS5SX2
- Record the environment. Write down the PS5 model, firmware, PS5SX2 release, disc title, and whether the media is CD or DVD. Note the exact on-screen message, if any.
- Confirm the emulator starts. If PS5SX2 itself fails to open, repair the homebrew, helper, and mount installation before diagnosing the disc. A disc cannot be tested reliably until the application can access its game library.
- Check the BIOS. PS5SX2 requires a user-dumped PS2 BIOS. Make sure the configured BIOS is present and that the emulator recognizes it. A missing or incorrectly mounted BIOS can look like a game-recognition problem.
- Test a supported image. If you have a known-good ISO, CHD, CSO, or ZSO image, try it. A working image points toward physical-media handling; a failing image points toward the BIOS, file location, permissions, or emulator setup.
- Identify CD versus DVD. If the title is a CD release, check current documentation and independent compatibility reports before blaming the disc. Built-in-drive CD limitations have been reported for PS5SX2, and external USB-drive support is conditional.
- Insert the disc before opening the relevant shelf or disc option. Some releases detect the medium during startup or when the disc shelf is refreshed. Follow the current build’s menu labels rather than an older tutorial.
- Watch for copy progress. If PS5SX2 begins copying, leave the console running until the progress indicator completes. An incomplete copy may not appear as a launchable game.
- Try the existing-copy path. If the release says it can start an existing copy, select that entry instead of initiating a second copy. This avoids confusing a completed game image with a new physical-disc operation.
- Compare with another PS2 title. If one title works and another does not, record each title’s disc format and whether it is a single- or multi-disc release. A difference between DVD and CD is especially significant.
- Check the project’s tested combinations. Compare your firmware and console model with the project’s listed combinations. An unlisted combination is unverified, not proof of a defective disc.

Test the PS5 optical drive only with supported media
Once you have established that the issue is not simply stock-PS5 incompatibility, test the drive with a retail PS5 game disc, Blu-ray, or DVD. Sony’s troubleshooting guidance recommends these checks:

Make sure the disc is inserted in the correct direction for whether the console is standing vertically or lying horizontally. Eject and reinsert it after each change.
- Clean the disc. Remove dirt and fingerprints with a soft, clean cloth. Wipe from the center toward the outer edge rather than rubbing in a circular path.
- Try another supported disc. Test another PS5 game, Blu-ray, or DVD. Sony says PS5 consoles cannot play burned discs or audio CDs, so those are not valid drive tests.
- Use Safe Mode. Start the PS5 in Safe Mode and use the option to clear the cache and rebuild the database. This can address database or system-index problems, but it does not add support for PS2 discs.
- Contact PlayStation Repairs if supported media still fails. If multiple supported discs remain unreadable after cleaning and the Safe Mode step, Sony directs users to its repair service.
Sony also notes that unfinalized DVDs cannot be played and that scratches, dust, recording quality, and the characteristics of the recording device can prevent playback. Those warnings explain why some media fails, but they do not identify the cause of a particular disc without testing.

Do not use a destructive reset as the first fix
Sony lists reinstalling system software after rebuilding the database and warns that reinstalling deletes all console information. That is an advanced recovery step for serious system problems, not a sensible first response to a PS2 disc that retail PS5 software does not support. Back up data and exhaust the non-destructive checks before considering it.
Why one PS2 game may work while another does not
Different optical formats
The simplest explanation is that the working title is a DVD and the failing title is a CD. Reported PS5SX2 built-in-drive limitations make this comparison more useful than comparing game publishers or release years.
Different emulator paths
One game may already exist as a copied image while the other still requires a physical-disc copy. The shelf can display copy progress or launch an existing copy, so two discs can produce different menus without either disc being damaged.
Game-specific compatibility
PS5SX2’s tested-games list is not a compatibility guarantee. A title can fail because of emulation behavior, a particular BIOS configuration, or a release-specific bug even when another game works on the same console.
