If a power bank is smoking or burning, get away from it, keep other people away, avoid the smoke, and call your local emergency number from a safe place. Do not pick it up, carry it outside, or try to inspect it. A lithium-ion battery can reignite after flames or smoke appear to stop.
If the power bank is unusually hot or swollen but is not smoking, stop using and charging it. Do not puncture, squeeze, open, or throw it away. Ask the manufacturer, retailer, fire service, or local waste authority for location-specific handling and disposal instructions.
First, identify which situation you have
The safest response depends on whether the battery is in an active fire event or is showing a warning sign without smoke. Lithium-ion battery faults can escalate quickly through a process called thermal runaway. The U.S. Fire Administration identifies rising temperature, bulging, mechanical damage, popping or hissing, visible gases and other changes as signs of potential trouble (U.S. Fire Administration guidance).

Fire and Rescue NSW lists pungent odors, casing discoloration or swelling, leaking electrolyte, extreme heat, abnormal popping or hissing, smoke and fumes as warning signs (Fire and Rescue NSW). A power bank does not need to be visibly burning to require immediate discontinuation of use.

If the power bank is smoking or on fire
1. Create distance immediately
Leave the area and tell everyone nearby to move away. Avoid breathing smoke or fumes. Do not lean over the device to identify the smell, unplug a cable, read its label or take a photograph. Never touch a swollen or ruptured battery with bare hands; Fire and Rescue NSW warns that heat or chemicals can cause severe burns.
Do not carry a smoking power bank outdoors or place it in a sink, bucket, bag, vehicle or other container. Moving it brings you close to the battery at the moment it may vent, burst or ignite again.
2. Call the emergency service from a safe location
Use the emergency number for your country or region and explain that a lithium-ion power bank is smoking or burning. Give the address, tell the dispatcher whether anyone may have inhaled smoke or been burned, and say if the device is indoors, near other batteries or close to combustible materials. Do not assume that a fire is over because visible flames disappear.

3. Do not attempt a risky first-aid firefighting operation
Only attempt initial firefighting if your local fire authority’s instructions permit it, you have a clear escape route and doing so is plainly safe. Japan’s official guidance says initial firefighting should be attempted only when safety is secured and it is possible. If you cannot confidently meet those conditions, close doors if you can do so without approaching the battery, evacuate and wait for firefighters.
Do not improvise by puncturing the casing, opening the power bank, covering it with clothing, or trying to remove individual cells. Those actions can expose you to hot parts, electrolyte or a renewed burst of flame.
4. Treat the battery as dangerous after smoke or flames stop
Fire and Rescue NSW warns that a battery may reignite even after visible smoke or flames have stopped. Japan’s agency likewise says not to touch the product while waiting for firefighters because it may reignite. Keep people away until emergency personnel declare the area safe. Do not retrieve the power bank to “check” it or reconnect it to a charger.

Stop charging and using it
Disconnect charging only if you can do so without approaching a battery that is smoking, hissing, leaking or visibly deforming. Otherwise leave it alone and move away. Do not continue using a swollen or overheating power bank to finish charging a phone, and do not test whether it still holds a charge. Health Canada advises against using batteries that show damage such as swelling or overheating (Health Canada’s lithium-ion battery factsheet).

Do not press, puncture or dismantle the casing
Swelling means the battery or its enclosure has changed shape. Pressing it flat, piercing it, removing screws or attempting a cell replacement can damage internal layers and trigger a fire. Keep the power bank away from children, pets, ignition sources and materials that could burn.
Do not use bare hands on a ruptured or leaking unit. If liquid has escaped, do not wipe it up by squeezing the case or handling the cells. Leave the area and ask the fire service or waste authority for instructions if the condition worsens.
Place it only where local experts advise
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency advises contacting the manufacturer, retailer or relevant waste-management authority and keeping a swollen battery or device in a safe location until a disposal option is identified (EPA lithium-ion battery questions). “Safe location” depends on the battery’s condition, your building and local procedures. Keep it away from flammable materials, but do not improvise a sealed container or move a hot, leaking or unstable battery without professional direction.
EPA notes that a fire-suppressant-filled bucket or another location away from combustibles may be considered in some circumstances. That is not a universal power-bank instruction: ask the authority handling your case before choosing a container or moving the device.

Escalate if symptoms change
Call the emergency service if the power bank begins smoking, hissing, popping, leaking heavily or heating rapidly. A swollen battery can become an active fire without giving you a useful warning period, so do not wait for flames before seeking help when the condition is deteriorating.
Arrange disposal without using household bins
Never put a lithium-ion power bank, loose lithium-ion battery or a device containing one in household garbage or ordinary recycling. The U.S. EPA explains that batteries can be damaged in collection and processing, creating fires in waste trucks or facilities (EPA guidance). A swollen or damaged unit needs a route that specifically accepts damaged batteries.
Ask the right organizations
- Contact the power-bank manufacturer or the retailer that sold it and describe the swelling, heat, leakage or smoke.
- Ask your municipal waste-management or hazardous-waste authority whether it accepts damaged lithium-ion batteries and what preparation it requires.
- If the battery is hot, leaking or otherwise unstable, ask the local fire service for handling instructions rather than transporting it yourself.
Tell the organization that the battery is damaged; do not describe it merely as “used electronics.” Collection programs may accept ordinary spent batteries but reject swollen or fire-damaged units. Follow the exact packaging, appointment and transport instructions you receive.
Why these symptoms are serious
A lithium-ion cell stores energy in tightly packed chemical layers. Mechanical damage, manufacturing defects, overheating or a failed charger can create internal conditions in which temperature rises faster than heat can escape. The U.S. Fire Administration describes this as thermal runaway and lists bulging, rising temperature, popping or hissing, visible gases and damage as potential signs. Once a cell vents or ignites, neighboring cells can be heated in turn.

The practical implication is important: a power bank that is merely “warm” during normal use is different from one that is getting hotter, changing shape, making noise or producing an unusual odor. A trend toward worsening heat is a reason to stop use immediately, not a reason to wait for a more obvious fire.
Actions that increase danger
- Do not pick up or carry a smoking, flaming or ruptured power bank.
- Do not keep charging it, connect another cable, or plug it into a different adapter to test it.
- Do not puncture, crush, open, repair or tape over a swollen casing.
- Do not place it in household trash or a recycling bin.
- Do not assume it is safe because smoke or flames have stopped.
- Do not handle leaking or ruptured parts with bare hands.
- Do not choose a disposal container or transport method for a damaged battery without instructions from the responsible authority.

Local fire and waste authorities may differ on evacuation distances, whether any initial firefighting is appropriate and how a damaged battery should be collected. Their instructions take priority over generic online advice.
A concise decision checklist
- See smoke, flames or rapidly worsening heat: move away, keep others away, avoid fumes and call the local emergency number.
- See swelling, discoloration, leakage, unusual odor or abnormal heat without smoke: stop using and charging it; do not press or dismantle it.
- Need temporary handling advice: contact the manufacturer, retailer, fire service or waste authority and describe the exact condition.
- Need disposal: use only a route that explicitly accepts damaged lithium-ion batteries; never use household garbage or ordinary recycling.
- After any smoke or fire: leave the device undisturbed until emergency personnel say it is safe, because reignition is possible.
These steps prioritize distance and professional direction over recovering the device. A power bank can be replaced; approaching an unstable lithium-ion battery can expose you to fire, hot fragments and irritating fumes.
