First check PlayStation Network service status, then open Transaction History on the account that attempted the purchase. That tells you whether you have a failed checkout or a completed purchase with an account, entitlement, license, or download problem. Do not repeat a payment until you know which case applies.

Start with a two-minute triage

  1. Check PlayStation Network status. A service incident can prevent wallet funding, checkout, entitlement checks, or downloads. Wait until the affected service is restored before trying the same payment or download again.
  2. Check Transaction History on the purchasing account. A successful entry means Sony recorded the purchase; no successful entry usually means the checkout did not complete.
  3. Write down the console, account, exact error code, and attempted steps. PlayStation support troubleshooting differs between PS4 and PS5, and an error-code lookup is more reliable than interpreting a generic message.

A bank notification alone does not prove that a game entitlement was created. A charge and an entitlement are separate questions, so use the Store’s transaction record as the starting point.

Confirm whether the purchase completed

On a PS5

Sign in to the account used at checkout, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Transaction History, and select the relevant date range.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On a PS4

Use Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Transaction History. Make sure the displayed user is the account that bought the game, not a family member’s separate account.

From a browser

Sign in to Sony’s account-management site, open the account’s payment or transaction section, and select the purchase. Keep the transaction date, title, amount, and order details if you need support or a refund.

If there is no successful transaction

Treat the issue as a payment or wallet-funding failure. Check the card or payment service with its issuer, confirm the billing details, and verify that the method is accepted in the account’s Store country or region. Do not restore licenses for a purchase that never appears in Transaction History; restoring licenses cannot create a missing transaction.

If the transaction is present

Do not buy the game again. Continue with the account, library, sharing, subscription, and license checks below. If your bank shows two pending or completed charges, inspect Transaction History and your bank statement before contacting support so you can report a possible duplicate accurately.

If the game was purchased but is missing or locked

Use the purchasing account

Sign out of any account that did not buy the title and sign in to the owner account. Open Game Library and search the title rather than relying only on the Store page. Check your collection, purchased items, and any hidden-game filter; a title can be hidden without being deleted.

Check the access type

  • Direct purchase: Match the library listing with the title and edition shown in Transaction History. Deluxe, cross-generation, and add-on products can appear as separate entitlements.
  • PlayStation Plus: Confirm that the subscription is active and that the game is still included in the applicable monthly or catalog offering. Catalog titles can leave the service even when the console still displays an old tile.
  • Another household account: The owner must enable the appropriate sharing setting. On PS5, the owner uses Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play and enables it on the console. On PS4, the owner uses Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4 > Activate. Sharing is tied to the owner’s account and console settings; it does not transfer ownership to every account everywhere.

Restore licenses

On PS5, open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. On PS4, open Settings > Account Management > Restore Licenses. Run the operation while signed in to the account that owns the game, then restart the console and check the library again. This refreshes entitlement data; it does not refund a purchase or bypass a regional restriction.

When a lock icon remains

A lock commonly indicates that the current user cannot validate the entitlement. Recheck the owner account, Console Sharing and Offline Play or Primary PS4 activation, subscription status, and network connection. If the owner recently changed the primary-console or sharing setting, sign in on that console and restore licenses after the change.

If the download will not start, stops, or stays pending

PS5 procedure

  1. Open the Control Center and select Downloads/Uploads.
  2. Pause the game, wait a few seconds, and select Resume.
  3. If it remains stalled, cancel and delete the queue item, then start the download again from Game Library rather than an old notification.
  4. Check available storage under Settings > Storage, install the latest system software, and confirm PlayStation Network status.

PS4 procedure

  1. Open Notifications > Downloads and pause, then resume, the item.
  2. If the queue entry is corrupted or stuck, cancel and delete it, restart the PS4, and begin the download again from Library > Purchased.
  3. Verify free storage, system software, and the network connection before retrying.

A download failure is not automatically a failed purchase. Check Transaction History before deleting anything, especially when a large game has already consumed storage or the console shows a completed transaction.

Use Safe Mode only as a later step

If license and queue steps fail, Sony’s Safe Mode tools can clear temporary cache data or rebuild the database. On either console, power the system fully off, then hold the power button until the second beep, connect the controller with a USB cable, and choose the cache-clearing or database-rebuilding option appropriate to that console. Read the on-screen warning and do not select an initialization or factory-reset option unless you have a complete backup and deliberately intend to erase the system. Menu names and available options can differ by PS4 or PS5 system software, so use Sony’s current console-specific Safe Mode guide.

If PlayStation Store declines your card or wallet top-up

Check the Store region and billing details

Payment methods differ by country and Store region. Use the payment-method page for the account’s actual region rather than assuming that a card or payment service accepted in another country will work. Sony warns that a card registered to an address in a different country from the Store region may not link. Confirm the name, billing address, postal code, expiration date, and security information with the bank or payment provider.

Do not retry during a 24-hour security block

If Sony reports that payment information was updated too many times, wait the full 24 hours before trying again. Every attempt during that period can start another 24-hour block. During the wait, use a different accepted payment method or a PlayStation Store wallet top-up code if one is available for the account’s region.

Understand wallet behavior

Wallet funds are used first when you make a purchase. A subscription bought with wallet funds may still require a payment method to remain attached to the account for recurring billing. A voucher adds funds to the Store wallet; it does not unlock a game that is unavailable in your region, repair a missing entitlement, or guarantee that a checkout will succeed. Check the voucher’s region and validity before redeeming it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check for service outages before repeating payment

When PlayStation Network services are degraded, wallet funding can fail even when the card is valid. Wait for service recovery, then check Transaction History and your bank statement. If no completed transaction exists, retry once after the service is restored rather than submitting many duplicate attempts.

What to do when you were charged but cannot find the game

  1. Check Transaction History on the exact account that received the charge.
  2. Match the transaction’s title, edition, and date with the game you expected.
  3. Open Game Library, search purchased items, and check hidden content.
  4. For a shared purchase, sign in as the owner and verify Console Sharing and Offline Play on PS5 or Primary PS4 activation on PS4.
  5. Restore licenses, restart the console, and retry the download from the library.
  6. If the transaction exists but the entitlement is still absent or locked, contact PlayStation Support with the transaction details, console model, region, error code, and the steps already completed.

If the charge is not in Transaction History, do not assume it is a completed game purchase. It may be a temporary bank authorization, a wallet-funding attempt, a subscription renewal, or an unauthorized transaction.

Handle an unrecognized charge safely

Review Transaction History, active subscriptions, family-account activity, and wallet funding first. If the charge remains unexplained, use Sony’s unauthorized-transaction and account-security process promptly and change your password if you suspect account access. Do not immediately reverse a valid transaction through the bank: a chargeback can lead to PlayStation account restrictions while the debt is investigated. Follow Sony’s dispute and recovery instructions instead.

Refund rules depend on what you bought

Sony’s US refund page, accessed October 13, 2026, separates games and downloadable content from subscriptions, pre-orders, and wallet top-ups. Local law may provide additional rights, and the applicable policy can vary by Store region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Purchase type Main conditions described by Sony Request route or timing
Game or DLC Request within 14 days of purchase and do not download or stream the content, unless the content is faulty or local law provides another remedy. Transaction History > eligible transaction > Request Refund, or PlayStation Support’s online assistant. Sony says processing can take 30 to 60 days; if the original payment method cannot receive the money, the refund may go to the wallet.
Subscription Separate rules apply. Sony describes a 14-day period from sign-up for the first payment, with the amount potentially reduced to reflect service already used. Use the subscription-specific option on Sony’s current refund policy page and cancel recurring billing separately if you do not want another renewal.
Pre-order Eligibility depends on when you cancel and whether the main content has been downloaded or preloaded. It is not governed automatically by the game/DLC rule. Select the pre-order category in Sony’s current refund process and follow the timing conditions shown for your region.
Wallet top-up The cited policy says wallet top-ups cannot be canceled. Check the transaction and payment method before adding more funds; contact support if the top-up was unauthorized or malfunctioned.

Do not download or stream a game while deciding whether to request a standard game/DLC refund; doing so can remove eligibility under the stated policy unless the content is faulty or another legal right applies.

When an error code appears

Use Sony’s official error-code lookup and enter the complete code, including letters and hyphens. Record whether it appeared during checkout, wallet funding, license validation, or downloading. The same symptom—such as a locked tile or a failed download—can have different remedies depending on the code and console. If the lookup does not resolve it, provide support with the code, transaction ID, Store region, console model, system-software version, and a chronological list of attempts.

A practical decision table

What you see Most likely branch First action
No entry in Transaction History and no entitlement Checkout or payment failed Check service status, region-accepted payment methods, billing details, and any 24-hour card-update block.
Completed transaction, game absent from library Wrong account, hidden item, sharing, or entitlement sync issue Use the purchasing account, check hidden content and sharing settings, then restore licenses.
Completed transaction, lock icon Owner or license validation problem Verify the owner’s console-sharing or Primary PS4 setting and restore licenses.
Game listed but download stalls Queue, storage, software, network, or service issue Pause/resume, cancel and redownload from the library, check storage and status, then use console-specific Safe Mode guidance.
Bank charge not found in Transaction History Authorization, wallet attempt, renewal, or unauthorized charge Check the bank and account activity; contact Sony’s security or payment support before requesting a bank reversal.

What to include when contacting support

  • PS4 or PS5 model and current system software.
  • Account email or online ID, without sharing your password or full payment-card number.
  • Store country or region and the account that made the purchase.
  • Transaction date, title, edition, amount, and transaction ID.
  • Exact error code and the screen where it appeared.
  • Whether the item was downloaded, streamed, preloaded, or only purchased.
  • Whether service status was normal and which troubleshooting steps you completed.

This information lets support distinguish a declined checkout from a completed purchase with a missing entitlement, and a licensing issue from a download or storage failure.
