What do I do if my package says delivered but I didn’t get it? Start by checking the address, delivery timestamp, photo or note, and every likely drop-off location. Ask household members, neighbors, and building staff. If the parcel is still missing, contact the carrier for scan details, notify the seller in writing, and escalate through your payment provider when the seller does not resolve the problem.
A delivered scan is evidence that a carrier recorded a delivery event, not proof that you personally received the parcel. The correct remedy depends on the carrier, seller, delivery instructions, country, and payment method.
Follow this order first
- Verify the order details. Open the retailer’s order page and confirm the shipping address, expected delivery date, scan time, and any stated drop-off location. Look for a delivery photo, driver note, text message, email, or instruction such as “side door” or “parcel locker.” On Amazon US, these details are available through Your Orders, the Message Center, delivery notices, and the order’s delivery information.
- Search the normal and less obvious places. Check the front porch, side and back doors, garage, mailbox, parcel locker, weather-protected areas, and places hidden from street view. In an apartment, ask the package-room attendant, concierge, landlord, or management office. A parcel may have been placed at another exterior door or in a shared secure area.
- Ask other people who could have accepted it. Check with everyone in the household and nearby neighbors. A neighbor may have taken the parcel inside for safekeeping, or a family member may have brought it in without seeing the delivery notification.
- Allow for a possible early scan. Amazon says some orders can be scanned as delivered before they arrive and advises waiting 48 hours. That is Amazon’s guidance for its orders, not a guarantee that every carrier or retailer will deliver within that interval.
- Contact the carrier. Use the tracking page or the carrier’s official customer-service route. Ask where the scan was recorded, whether GPS or other delivery-location information is available, and whether the driver left a photo or note. Record the case number and the date and time of your contact.
- Notify the seller in writing. State that the tracking record says delivered but the parcel is missing. Include the order number, tracking number, delivery address, scan date and time, and the searches you have already completed. Ask whether the seller will open an investigation, send a replacement, or issue a refund.
- Escalate if there is no resolution. Keep the order confirmation, tracking history, delivery image, carrier correspondence, and every message with the seller. If you paid by US credit card and the seller does not correct the problem, consider a written billing-error dispute within the applicable deadline.
Check the tracking record and delivery evidence
Begin with the retailer’s order page rather than relying only on a notification banner. Confirm that the address includes the correct apartment, unit, building, ZIP or postal code, and any access instructions. An address error can send a parcel to a different property even when the tracking page shows a completed delivery.

Review the precise scan time. Compare it with when someone was home, building access hours, and any security-camera footage you can lawfully review. Read the delivery note carefully: “front door” may mean a lobby entrance, while “mailbox” may mean a shared mail area rather than your individual box.
Save a screenshot or PDF of the tracking page before information changes. Keep the delivery photo in its original form. A photo can show a familiar doorway, but it can also reveal that the parcel was left at a neighboring unit or another entrance.

Search every plausible drop-off location
At a house
- Front porch, steps, and behind porch furniture or planters
- Side and back doors, including gates and covered patios
- Garage entrance, mailbox area, and weather-protected corners
- Locations hidden from the road, such as behind a wall or bin
In an apartment, condominium, or managed building
- Parcel lockers and mailrooms
- Lobby shelves, reception desks, concierge areas, and loading rooms
- Building management or a central office
- A neighboring unit or another entrance serving the same building
USPS specifically recommends checking the garage, mailbox, porch, weather-protected or out-of-view spots, other exterior doors, parcel lockers, and apartment or condominium management. Those checks are useful even when another carrier made the delivery.
When to wait and when to act
Waiting can make sense when the retailer reports an early scan. Amazon’s US help guidance says to wait 48 hours because an item may be scanned before it physically arrives. Treat that as retailer-specific advice: it does not remove the need to investigate a wrong address, a misdelivery, or a theft report.

Contact the carrier for location information
Use the tracking number from the retailer’s order page and contact the carrier through its official tracking or support channel. Ask these focused questions:

- What exact location is associated with the delivered scan?
- Is there a delivery photo, GPS record, signature, locker identifier, or driver note?
- Was the parcel handed to a person, placed in a locker, or left at an alternative address?
- Can the carrier open a trace or service request, and what is the reference number?
For USPS, a delivered scan records a date, time, and location. USPS says that if an eligible item is still missing more than one postal business day after the delivered scan, the customer can submit a service request to the local Post Office. The “eligible” and “more than one postal business day” conditions matter; not every service or situation qualifies, and the local Post Office decides how to handle the request.
Keep the carrier’s response even if it says the item was delivered correctly. That record gives the seller specific facts to investigate instead of leaving you with only an automated status.

Tell the seller exactly what happened
Send the seller a written message through the order system or by an address the seller publishes for support. A concise report should include:
- Order number and tracking number
- Full delivery address, without exposing unnecessary personal information in a public forum
- Date and time shown for delivery
- Whether a photo, signature, note, or locker code was provided
- Places checked and people asked
- Carrier case number and the carrier’s findings, if available
- The remedy you are requesting: investigation, replacement, redelivery, or refund
Ask when you should expect a response and who is responsible for the investigation. Save the sent message and any reply. The US Federal Trade Commission advises consumers to contact the seller first and retain order and shipping records.

Amazon US orders: the stated process
Orders shipped by Amazon
Amazon US instructs customers to verify the shipping address, check delivery notices and messages, review any delivery photo, search the location specified in delivery instructions, and ask household members and neighbors. It also advises waiting 48 hours because a package can be scanned before arrival. If an order shipped by Amazon remains missing, Amazon says to contact Customer Service within 30 days of the expected delivery date.
Orders shipped and sold by a third-party seller
For an order shipped and sold by a third-party seller, Amazon directs the customer to contact that seller about the missing delivery. Use the order’s contact option, provide the tracking and search details, and request the seller’s investigation or proposed remedy. Keep the conversation inside the order record when possible.

Who is responsible for the loss?
Responsibility is not identical everywhere. It can turn on local consumer law, the sales contract, the carrier service, and whether you authorized a neighbor or “safe place.” A seller may need to investigate with its carrier, while a carrier may be the only party able to provide the scan location or driver record.

Citizens Advice Wales gives a Wales-specific example: when a consumer buys from a business, the seller is responsible for ensuring delivery and should chase the courier. Its guidance also says the result can differ if the consumer agreed to delivery to a neighbor or alternative safe place. If the agreed location was used and the parcel then disappeared, the seller’s responsibility may differ; if delivery was not made to the agreed location, the seller must sort out the issue under that guidance. The page was last reviewed on 22 November 2018, so do not apply it automatically outside Wales or assume it reflects current law elsewhere.
Check the consumer rules in your country or state, the seller’s terms, and the delivery instruction you selected. Do not accept a blanket statement that a delivered scan always ends the seller’s responsibility, or that the seller is always liable, without considering those details.
Payment escalation in the United States
Credit card
The FTC says an undelivered purchase charged to a US credit card can be a potential billing error under the Fair Credit Billing Act when the seller does not reverse the charge. The dispute generally must be made in writing within 60 days of the date the first statement showing the error was sent. Follow the card issuer’s stated address and documentation requirements; a phone call alone may not preserve the written-dispute procedure.
Debit card
Debit-card protections and investigation procedures differ from credit-card billing-error rules. Contact the bank or debit-card issuer promptly, explain that the goods were not received, and ask what claim or dispute process applies. Recovery is not guaranteed, and the 60-day credit-card rule should not be presented as a debit-card deadline.

Other countries and payment services
Payment-issuer rules vary by country and by method, including bank transfer, digital wallet, buy-now-pay-later service, or prepaid card. Ask the issuer for its time limit and required evidence. A payment dispute is an escalation step after you have documented the seller contact, not a substitute for checking the address and delivery evidence.

What not to do
- Do not assume the carrier’s “delivered” label identifies the exact place you should search.
- Do not delete tracking messages, photos, or seller correspondence before the matter is resolved.
- Do not publish your full address, phone number, or tracking number in a public post while asking for help.
- Do not wait past a payment issuer’s written-dispute deadline while repeatedly contacting the seller.
- Do not claim theft as a certainty when the evidence only shows a missing or possibly misdelivered parcel; describe what the record actually shows.
When to report suspected theft
If you have checked the delivery locations and confirmed that the parcel was delivered to your address but is missing, tell the seller and carrier that you suspect theft. Preserve camera footage and ask building management whether other deliveries were affected. A police report may be appropriate under local procedures, particularly for a high-value item or repeated theft, but a report does not replace the seller, carrier, or payment-dispute process.

Create one note containing the order number, tracking number, retailer, carrier, purchase date, expected date, delivered scan date and time, address shown, delivery photo or note, every location checked, names or roles of people contacted, case numbers, and promised response dates. This prevents contradictory accounts and lets you prove that you acted promptly.
Once the seller offers a replacement or refund, confirm the agreement in writing and check your statement or order history to ensure the credit or replacement actually appears. If the seller denies the claim, request the specific evidence supporting that decision and use the applicable consumer-law or payment-issuer escalation route for your location.
