If a Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 will not charge, start with the power path: use the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter marked MOD. NGN-01, connect the console directly to a wall outlet, attach the controller, and leave the console powered on or in Sleep Mode. Check HOME Menu > Controllers for the charging icon and approximate battery level. If charging still fails, test the controller in the optional Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip (BEE-010). The result of that test identifies whether the likely fault is the console, grip, adapter, or controller. A controller that still will not charge, will not reach full charge, or loses its charge quickly should be sent to Nintendo for service.
Identify the controller, adapter and charging accessory
The Nintendo Switch 2 detachable controllers are called Joy-Con 2. They charge in two supported ways: while attached to the Switch 2 console, or while attached to the separately sold Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, model BEE-010.
For troubleshooting, use the Nintendo Switch 2 AC adapter marked MOD. NGN-01. Nintendo says the original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 adapters have different power output, so an adapter that happens to fit should not be treated as equivalent. Inspect the NGN-01 cable and connectors before use. Cuts, fraying, crushed or sharply kinked sections, bent or loose connectors, scorch marks, or other physical damage are reasons to stop using the adapter and replace it.

How Joy-Con 2 charging is supposed to work
Charging while attached to the console
Attach each Joy-Con 2 firmly to the sides of the Switch 2. Connect the console to the NGN-01 adapter and a wall outlet. The console must be powered on or in Sleep Mode; attached controllers do not charge when the required power connection or console state is absent.
From the HOME Menu, open Controllers. The screen shows an approximate battery level for each connected controller and an icon indicating whether it is charging. Use that display rather than relying only on an LED or on how warm the console feels.
Expected charging time
Nintendo’s support guidance gives an approximate full-charge time of three and a half hours for Joy-Con 2. The figure is a general estimate, not a guarantee for a controller with a depleted, aging, damaged, or misreported battery.

Charging in the BEE-010 grip
Slide the Joy-Con 2 onto the BEE-010 Charging Grip. Power the grip from the Switch 2 dock with the included cable, or connect it directly to the Switch 2 AC adapter. Check both the HOME Menu’s controller status and the grip’s recharge LED.
Nintendo notes that the grip’s recharge LED can turn off when the controller battery is approximately full. An unlit LED therefore does not automatically mean the grip has failed; verify the battery level on the console before diagnosing the accessory.
Follow this troubleshooting sequence
- Remove power safely. Disconnect the AC adapter from the wall outlet and from the console or dock. This resets the charging setup and lets you inspect every connection.
- Verify the adapter. Confirm that the label identifies a Nintendo Switch 2 adapter, model MOD. NGN-01. Examine the cable, plug and connectors for cuts, fraying, kinks, looseness or other damage. Do not continue with a damaged adapter; replace it.
- Reconnect directly. Attach the console to the NGN-01 and plug the adapter directly into a wall outlet. For this test, avoid an unpowered dock, intermediary hub or questionable extension setup.
- Re-seat the controller. Detach the Joy-Con 2, check that the rails and contacts are clear of visible debris, and attach it again until it is fully seated. Repeat for the other controller if both are affected.
- Set the correct console state. Leave the Switch 2 powered on or in Sleep Mode while the adapter is connected. A fully shut-down console does not meet the charging condition Nintendo specifies for attached controllers.
- Read the status. Open HOME Menu > Controllers. Note the approximate battery percentage or level and whether the charging icon appears. Check both controllers separately; one failing controller and two failing controllers point to different likely causes.
- Install the latest system update. Nintendo includes keeping the console software current in its power troubleshooting. Apply any available Switch 2 system update, restart the console, and check the Controllers screen again.
- Try another correct adapter. If another known-good Nintendo Switch 2 NGN-01 adapter is available, repeat the direct-to-console test. This separates an adapter fault from a console or controller fault. Do not substitute a Switch adapter merely because its plug fits.
- Use the alternate grip test. If you have the BEE-010 Charging Grip, attach the affected Joy-Con 2, power the grip through the dock and included cable or directly from the NGN-01, and observe the controller status.
- Interpret the result. Use the decision table below to determine which item needs attention before contacting Nintendo.
Use the charging-path test to locate the fault
| Console-attached result | BEE-010 grip result | Most useful next action |
|---|---|---|
| Does not charge | Charges normally | The console’s charging or controller-rail path may be faulty. Nintendo directs owners to contact support for service for the console. |
| Charges normally | Does not charge | Confirm the BEE-010 is powered by the dock/cable or NGN-01 and check the grip LED and Controllers screen. If the Joy-Con 2 work on the console but not in the grip, Nintendo identifies the grip as the likely item to replace. |
| Does not charge | Does not charge | Recheck the NGN-01, wall outlet, controller seating and system update. If a known-good adapter does not change the result, the affected controller needs Nintendo service. |
| Charges but never reaches full | Same behavior in either route | Treat this as a controller power or battery problem rather than a normal three-and-a-half-hour charge. Nintendo’s instructions direct service when a controller will not fully charge. |
| Shows full, then drains unusually fast | Same behavior in either route | This is a charge-retention failure. Nintendo directs service for a controller that charges but does not retain its charge. |
The table is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that only one component can be defective. A damaged adapter, console connector and controller can coexist, so stop using any visibly damaged part.

What each symptom usually means
No charging icon in Controllers
First confirm that the console is connected to the correct NGN-01 adapter and is on or in Sleep Mode. Remove and reattach the Joy-Con 2, then reopen the Controllers screen. If the icon remains absent, repeat with another known-good NGN-01 if possible. Testing the same controller in BEE-010 is the fastest way to separate the console path from the controller itself.
The battery level does not rise
A displayed level can be approximate, so allow a short period after reconnecting before judging a change. If the level never advances during a properly powered session, check the charging icon, adapter and alternate charging route. A controller that repeatedly fails to progress toward full charge should be serviced rather than left connected indefinitely.
The controller reaches full but loses charge quickly
This is different from a grip LED turning off. The LED may turn off because the battery is approximately full; rapid drain after that indicates the controller is not retaining charge. Nintendo’s service threshold covers controllers that charge but do not hold their charge.

Only one Joy-Con 2 fails
Test the affected controller by itself on the console and, if available, in the BEE-010. If the other Joy-Con 2 charges in the same position and power setup, the common adapter and console are less likely to be the sole cause. Persistent failure of the individual controller still warrants Nintendo service.
Both Joy-Con 2 fail together
Check the shared items first: the NGN-01, wall outlet, console power state, system software and attachment procedure. A grip test can show whether the problem follows both controllers or stays with the console’s charging path.

If the Charging Grip will not charge a controller
- Confirm that the accessory is the BEE-010 Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip, not a non-charging grip or another model.
- Connect it to the Switch 2 dock with the cable supplied for the grip, or connect it directly to the Switch 2 NGN-01 adapter.
- Attach the Joy-Con 2 completely and open HOME Menu > Controllers to check the approximate level and charging icon.
- Interpret the recharge LED in context. It can turn off when the controller is approximately full, so compare the LED with the battery status rather than treating darkness as proof of failure.
- If the same controller charges while attached to the console but not in the powered BEE-010, Nintendo identifies the grip as the likely replacement item.
The grip is an isolation tool as well as an accessory. Buying one is unnecessary if the console charges the controllers normally, and it cannot repair a controller with a failed battery.

When Nintendo service is the right next step
Stop troubleshooting and contact Nintendo support when a Joy-Con 2 still will not charge after the adapter, console power state, reattachment, update and alternate-route checks. Service is also the correct endpoint when the controller charges but cannot reach full charge or loses its charge unusually quickly.
If the Joy-Con 2 charges in the BEE-010 but not while attached to the Switch 2, report the console result to Nintendo; Nintendo says the console may need service. If it works on the console but not in the grip, report the grip as the suspected failed item after confirming its power connection.
Before contacting support, record which controller is affected, the battery level shown in Controllers, whether the charging icon appears, which adapter was used, whether the console was on or in Sleep Mode, and the result of the grip test. This information helps support distinguish a console path issue from an accessory or controller issue.

- Keep the NGN-01 cable loosely coiled rather than sharply bent, and replace it if the insulation or connector is damaged.
- Use the Switch 2 adapter specified for Switch 2 troubleshooting; do not assume an older Switch adapter provides the same output.
- Seat Joy-Con 2 fully on the console or BEE-010 before checking the status screen.
- Leave the console powered on or in Sleep Mode when relying on console-attached charging.
- Check the Controllers screen when diagnosing a grip LED, because the LED may turn off at approximately full charge.
- Keep Switch 2 system software updated before treating a charging indication as hardware failure.
Quick decision checklist
- Is the adapter marked MOD. NGN-01 and free of damage?
- Is the console connected directly to power and powered on or in Sleep Mode?
- Does HOME Menu > Controllers show the Joy-Con 2 and a charging icon?
- Did detaching and reattaching the controller change the result?
- Did a second known-good NGN-01 adapter change the result?
- Does the controller charge in the powered BEE-010 Charging Grip?
- Does it reach full charge and retain that charge?
If the answers still point to a failed controller, console or grip, Nintendo service is safer and more appropriate than repeatedly cycling power or leaving a defective setup connected.
