Do not buy the game again until you know whether the first transaction completed. First identify the failure: a declined payment, a completed purchase that never downloaded, a stalled download, a rejected code, or missing downloadable content (DLC). Then check the Nintendo Account that made the purchase, locate the entitlement through the correct Switch or Switch 2 menu, verify storage, and use the exact error code to choose the next step.
Start by identifying what “failed” means
The remedy depends on where the process stopped. A payment decline is different from a successful purchase with no download, and a code that says it was redeemed is different from a code for content that has not released.
- Payment declined or canceled: there may be no completed eShop transaction.
- Payment completed, but no download: the purchase is probably attached to a Nintendo Account and must be located on the console.
- Download paused or stuck: check the download queue, available storage, and whether the title is running.
- Download code rejected: record the full error number before trying another code.
- Game installed but DLC is missing: close the base game and confirm that the add-on belongs to the same game and account.
If you are unsure which case applies, begin with the transaction check below. It prevents an accidental second purchase and tells you which account owns the software.
1. Confirm that the purchase completed
Check the purchasing Nintendo Account
Digital purchases are associated with the Nintendo Account selected at checkout, not merely with the physical console. On the console, change to the user linked to that account and inspect the HOME Menu. Also check the account’s receipt email and transaction history on Nintendo’s website. Nintendo’s Japanese support explains the purchase and account-record process in its download-product purchase instructions and its eShop usage-record and redownload guidance.

- Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
- Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.
Match the amount and product
Confirm the title, edition, amount, and approximate purchase time in the receipt or account record. Do not rely only on a bank authorization: a temporary card authorization can exist even when an eShop order was not completed. If there is no Nintendo receipt or account transaction, treat the payment as unconfirmed and avoid buying the item again until your bank or Nintendo’s local support confirms the charge.
Know the transaction-history limit
Nintendo’s Japanese account guidance says the web transaction record covers the previous two years and can be viewed from a phone or computer; it also notes that some transaction types may not appear there. That two-year window is an operational retention limit, not a failure-rate statistic. Rules and record availability differ by country, so use the support site for your market.
Japan-market guidance also describes downloaded purchases as generally non-refundable and non-transferable, including before download or use. That is not a universal policy statement. For a refund, duplicate charge, or failed payment, use the Nintendo support page for your country rather than assuming the Japanese rule applies.

2. Locate the entitlement and start the download
Once the transaction is confirmed, do not purchase the title again. Find the entitlement under the same Nintendo Account and use the download path for your console generation.

- Smooth 4K/HD Recording & Playback: Supports stable 4K UHD and 1080P Full HD recording and playback, ideal for gameplay footage, game stream content capture, or immersive in-game video rendering.
- Battle-Tested Durability: Engineered for long sessions and intense environments. Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-resistant, X-ray safe — designed to withstand accidental drops, outdoor use, and frequent device swapping.
- Actual Capacity: Storage may be smaller than the labeled capacity because manufacturers use the decimal system (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) , operating systems display storage using the binary system (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This is a normal industry practice and does not affect performance.
| Console | Where to look | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 | HOME Menu’s Virtual Game Card area | Select the purchased software and load the Virtual Game Card. Nintendo’s Switch 2 instructions say loading it can start the software download. |
| Earlier Nintendo Switch models | HOME Menu and the account’s Virtual Game Card/redownload controls | Use the current local redownload instructions for your model and system version. Menu wording and placement have changed over time. |
For Switch 2, consult Nintendo’s Switch 2 download-purchase instructions. For earlier systems and account redownload records, see Nintendo’s eShop usage-record and software-redownload page. These are generation- and market-specific instructions; do not assume that an eShop menu shown for one generation appears on the other.
If the software icon or Virtual Game Card is absent, check every user on the console and sign in to the account shown on the receipt. A code or purchase redeemed by another account will not appear in your account’s library.
3. Check storage and the download state
Verify free space in the correct location
A download needs enough free capacity in system memory or on a compatible microSD card. An update can require additional temporary space beyond the installed game. Nintendo’s storage guidance is available in its download-product purchase instructions. Check the free-space indicator on the HOME Menu and compare it with the title’s listed requirement. If space is insufficient, delete or archive software you can redownload later, or use a microSD card compatible with your exact Switch model.

Inspect the queue and let the console finish
Open the HOME Menu and select the download-progress indicator to see whether the title is queued, paused, or reporting an error. If another game or update is downloading first, allow that item to finish or pause it so the failed title can proceed. Keep the console connected to the internet and powered on while you observe the status.
Nintendo’s Japanese usage notice says Switch downloads may continue while the console sleeps, while playing a communication-capable game can pause downloads. Treat that behavior as model-, system-version-, and market-specific; the notice is at Nintendo’s eShop usage-notes page.
4. Use the exact download-code error
Write down all digits and hyphens. The following mappings come from Nintendo’s English Switch 2 page, Using the Download Code (Redeem). They apply to the cited Switch 2 instructions, not automatically to every console, code type, or country.

| 2813-0040 or 9001-0040 | The code was already redeemed. | Look for the software icon or Virtual Game Card on the account that redeemed it. If nothing appears, another user or account may have used the code. |
| 2813-6561 or 9001-6561 | The code is incorrect or unavailable for the eShop/My Nintendo Store redemption flow. | Recheck every character and confirm that the code is intended for this service and region. |
| 2813-0055 or 9001-0055 | The content may not be available yet, including because the game or add-on has not reached its release date. | Check the announced release timing and try again only after the content is available. |
Nintendo Support describes the first case this way: “This is the error code that appears when the download code you entered is already redeemed.” If your code produces a different number, search that exact code in Nintendo’s support lookup for your country and console. Do not infer that a similar-looking number has the same meaning.

- EASY CONTENT MANAGEMENT. Easily back up, organize, and transfer your photos and videos with the SANDISK Memory Zone desktop or Android mobile app[5].
5. Fix missing DLC or other add-on content
Confirm the game and account match
Check that the add-on is for the installed base game, the game is from the same region where applicable, and the purchase or redemption used the Nintendo Account currently playing. Some add-ons are edition-specific or require the base game to be updated.
Close the base game completely
Exit the game rather than leaving it suspended, then launch it again. Nintendo says additional content cannot finish installing while the base software remains suspended or running. The add-on may appear only after this restart.
Check whether the game requires an in-game claim
Some bonus items are downloaded but must be claimed from a menu or delivery point inside the game. Follow that title’s instructions; the exact claim method is set by the game’s publisher. If the add-on still does not appear after a full close and relaunch, verify the entitlement under the purchasing account and contact Nintendo support with the receipt and software title.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
6. Handle a declined or disputed payment
A payment error does not prove that the game was purchased. First check the Nintendo receipt and transaction record described above. If no completed order exists, resolve the payment method issue through the eShop’s available options or your payment provider, then retry only once you know the original attempt did not create an order.
Nintendo lists market-specific payment methods and purchase procedures in its download-software payment-method guidance. Card support, currency, age restrictions, parental controls, and purchase limits vary by country. If your bank shows a charge but Nintendo shows no order, keep the bank reference, date, amount, and Nintendo Account email ready for local Nintendo support; do not submit repeated payments while the status is unresolved.
7. Account, region, and console-generation checks
- Region: Code validity, storefront availability, currency, taxes, and refund treatment can depend on the country associated with the Nintendo Account. Japan-market pages cited here are not universal instructions.
- Generation: Switch 2 code guidance and Virtual Game Card behavior should not be copied blindly to an earlier Switch, or vice versa.
- Account ownership: The account that bought or redeemed the item controls the entitlement. A different local user may be able to play it only under that console’s account-sharing rules.
- Release timing: A valid code can still return an unavailable-content error before the game or DLC release date.
- Parental controls: Account restrictions can block purchases or certain content. Review the account’s restrictions before assuming the download service is broken; Nintendo’s purchase-restriction information is at its Nintendo Account purchase-restrictions page.
A practical decision path
- Stop and record the title, account, console generation, country, payment time, and any error code.
- Check the receipt email and Nintendo Account transaction history before attempting another purchase.
- If paid, open the correct user’s HOME Menu and, on Switch 2, load the title’s Virtual Game Card.
- Check download status and free system or microSD capacity; allow for extra space required by updates.
- For a code, compare the exact number with Nintendo’s code-specific support page and verify the release date and region.
- For DLC, close the base game, relaunch it, and follow any in-game claim instructions.
- If the official steps do not resolve the issue, contact Nintendo support for your country with the receipt, account email, console model, code (without publicly sharing it), and full error number.
When the official steps do not resolve it
Use Nintendo’s support lookup for the exact code and local storefront rather than applying a generic network-reset recipe. The material cited here does not establish a universal outage diagnosis or one network procedure that fixes every failed download. Escalate when the transaction is charged but missing, the entitlement belongs to an account you cannot access, a redeemed code produces no software on the redeeming account, or the same documented error returns after storage, account, release-date, and DLC checks.
The safest rule is simple: verify ownership first, then use the download path and error guidance for your exact console generation and country. That sequence prevents duplicate purchases and separates account, storage, code, release, and add-on problems that look similar on the screen.
