If a Meraki firmware update appears to break connectivity, first allow the normal download-and-reboot window, then determine whether the device is still rebooting, has automatically reverted, or is unreachable because of a WAN, DNS, firewall, routing, power, or cloud-management problem. Do not reset or power-cycle the whole network before checking device status, event logs, local status pages, and the upstream path.
Meraki devices continue forwarding traffic while firmware downloads. Client connectivity is normally interrupted during the reboot. After rebooting, a device checks Internet and Meraki cloud reachability; if the required connectivity is not restored, it is designed to return to the previous firmware. The safest recovery is therefore targeted diagnosis followed, when appropriate, by Dashboard rollback to the immediately preceding version.
What the update process is supposed to do
Meraki keeps the existing and downloaded firmware available during an upgrade. Downloading should not itself disconnect clients. The service interruption occurs when the appliance, switch, or access point reboots into the new image.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a typical wired device on a fast Internet connection, Meraki describes the complete process as taking under 11 minutes: approximately 10 minutes or less to download and about one minute to reboot and resume normal operation. These are vendor process estimates, not an outage guarantee. A busy shared link can lengthen the download, and Dashboard may take additional minutes to refresh its status.

When the new image cannot load correctly or the device cannot restore the connectivity it needs after reboot, the device is designed to revert to the previous firmware. An apparent outage can therefore be a normal reboot, an automatic revert, or a separate network failure that happened at the same time.
First response: establish scope and wait safely
- Note the upgrade time. Record when the Dashboard schedule started and when the first client interruption occurred.
- Identify the affected family and models. Separate MX security appliances, MS switches, MR access points, and any other Meraki devices. Recovery behavior and available controls vary by family and firmware version.
- Measure the impact. Determine whether every client is offline, only clients behind one switch or access point are affected, or only Dashboard management is unavailable.
- Allow the estimated reboot window. For a wired device with fast Internet, wait through the vendor’s roughly 11-minute estimate before treating a normal upgrade as failed. Extend that observation period when the site shares a congested WAN link.
- Do not reboot the entire topology. A second reboot can interrupt devices that are healthy and can destroy useful event evidence.
Use the device details page and event log to find firmware-upgrade, reboot, failed-upgrade, or recovery events. Capture the event times before making changes. If Dashboard is only slow to refresh, the device may already be forwarding traffic normally.
Separate client forwarding from cloud management
Meraki cloud management is out-of-band: a cloud reachability alert does not automatically mean client data forwarding has stopped. A site can lose its WAN, an Internet route to the Meraki data center, or access to the cloud while a device continues serving clients with its last known configuration.

Check these conditions independently:
- Dashboard state: Is the device shown as online, offline, or merely updating?
- Client traffic: Can a wired client obtain an address and reach a known internal or Internet destination?
- Local access: Can you reach the device’s local status page or management interface from the site?
- Upstream path: Does the WAN handoff, modem, upstream router, and physical link show normal status?
- Name resolution and filtering: Are DNS queries succeeding, and has a firewall or inspection device begun blocking Meraki cloud traffic?
For an MR access point that cannot reach the cloud, Meraki’s troubleshooting guidance identifies blocked outbound firewall access, invalid or unreachable DNS responses, ISP modem traffic inspection, and a temporary Dashboard outage as possible causes. Check those paths before changing the AP’s configuration or replacing hardware.
Use a reachability-based decision table
| Observed state | Most useful next check | Lowest-risk recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Clients are offline during the expected reboot window, and the device is showing upgrade activity | Wait for the download and reboot estimate; watch event times | Allow the upgrade to finish rather than interrupting power |
| Dashboard shows the device online on the new version, but service remains unhealthy | Compare client scope, event logs, WAN status, and the timing of the first failure | Use Dashboard rollback to the previous version if the recent upgrade is the clear cause |
| Dashboard shows the device cloud-offline, but local clients still work | Test WAN routing, DNS, firewall policy, and upstream Internet access | Repair the targeted cloud path; do not reset a forwarding device solely because it is cloud-offline |
| The device is unreachable both locally and in Dashboard | Check power, link, upstream equipment, and the device’s event history if available | Restore the specific failed path and escalate with model and serial information |
| Several downstream devices fail after an MX change | Verify whether the MX completed its upgrade and returned online before the MS devices were upgraded | Stabilize the MX first, then handle downstream switches individually |
Check the device and upstream path before changing configuration
Dashboard and event evidence
Open the affected device’s details page and event log. Look for the firmware target, reboot reason, failed-upgrade message, cloud-connectivity change, and the last time the device checked in. Compare those timestamps with client complaints and WAN alarms. A firmware event that precedes a failure on only one device is stronger evidence than a general Dashboard warning affecting an entire organization.
Local status and physical checks
If the device is not reporting to Dashboard, use its local status page where supported. Confirm power or PoE, link lights, negotiated speed, and the upstream port. Check the modem or handoff for a changed public address, loss of synchronization, or a provider outage. Perform these targeted checks before unplugging an MX, switch, or access point that may still be serving some users.

WAN, DNS, firewall, and routing checks
Verify that the WAN interface has a valid address and gateway, that DNS returns valid responses, and that outbound filtering has not changed. Inspect upstream routing for a path to the Internet and to Meraki cloud services. If an ISP modem performs traffic inspection, test whether that inspection is dropping or altering the device’s outbound sessions. A cloud outage or Internet routing problem can produce the same Dashboard symptom as a failed firmware upgrade.

Rollback the recent upgrade when the evidence points to firmware
Meraki’s Firmware upgrades workflow can manage upgrades and roll back a recent upgrade. The documented rollback returns the device to the previous firmware version; it is not a general-purpose jump to any older release. The Managing Firmware Upgrades documentation states that the rollback action is available within 14 days of the upgrade, so verify that the option is still present in your current Dashboard.
- Open the organization in Dashboard.
- Go to Organization > Monitor > Firmware upgrades.
- Locate the completed or recent upgrade affecting the device or network.
- Confirm the device, old version, target version, event time, and client impact.
- Choose the available rollback action and review the scope before confirming.
- Monitor the device through its reboot, then verify Dashboard reachability and real client traffic.
Rollback is appropriate when the device is otherwise reachable, the outage began with the upgrade, and WAN, DNS, firewall, power, and upstream checks do not identify another cause. If the rollback control is absent, do not assume that a reset or an arbitrary downgrade is safe. Firmware family, enabled features, topology, and Dashboard state can constrain downgrade paths. For example, MR mixed-firmware guidance indicates that some feature combinations can lock downgrade controls.

Sequence MX and MS upgrades correctly
In a design that uses an MX security appliance upstream of MS switches, upgrade the MX first. Wait until the MX is online on its new firmware and passing Internet traffic before upgrading downstream switches. This sequencing keeps the upstream path stable while switches download and reboot.
Switch upgrade behavior is intended to give devices time to download before upstream devices reboot, but that protection does not remove the need to verify the MX. If several switches appear to fail at once, first confirm that the MX has completed its own reboot and restored WAN service. Then inspect each switch rather than repeatedly rebooting the whole stack.
Reduce disruption in MR access-point fleets
For MR deployments, Dashboard provides upgrade strategies that trade total duration against simultaneous client impact. Minimize client downtime staggers AP upgrades so fewer radios reboot at once. Minimize total upgrade time can reboot APs at nearly the same time, shortening the maintenance window but creating a larger concurrent interruption. Meraki documents this strategy feature beginning with MR 26.8.

Choose the strategy according to the site: staggered upgrades are generally more appropriate for continuous coverage, while near-simultaneous reboots may suit a planned outage window. Regardless of strategy, confirm that the APs have a working WAN, DNS, and outbound path before starting, because cloud reachability problems can prevent normal post-reboot operation.
What not to do
- Do not treat “cloud offline” as proof that all clients are offline. Test forwarding separately.
- Do not power-cycle every device immediately. Preserve event evidence and avoid extending an outage.
- Do not promise that the outage will end in exactly 11 minutes. The figure is a typical vendor estimate for a wired device on fast Internet.
- Do not select an arbitrary older firmware image. The documented Dashboard action returns to the previous version, and feature or version constraints may block other paths.
- Do not reset an MX, MS, or MR using model-agnostic instructions. A reset can erase configuration or create a larger outage.
- Do not upgrade downstream switches before a new MX is confirmed online. Stabilize the upstream appliance first.
Escalate with a complete evidence package
Contact Cisco Meraki Support when the device remains offline after the normal reboot window and targeted path checks, when rollback is unavailable, or when multiple devices fail without a clear WAN or power cause. Supply information that lets support distinguish firmware behavior from an upstream incident:
- Organization and network identifiers, affected device models, serial numbers, and locations
- Previous firmware and target firmware versions
- Upgrade schedule, reboot times, and the exact time clients lost service
- Dashboard online or offline state and relevant event-log entries
- Whether clients can still pass traffic locally
- WAN address, gateway, DNS, firewall, routing, modem, and power checks already completed
- Whether the device reverted automatically or a Dashboard rollback was attempted
- Which devices recovered and which remain affected
Keep the original event logs and screenshots until the incident is closed. If the outage involves an MX, MS, and MR chain, document the order in which each device upgraded and returned online.

Quick Recap
A compact recovery checklist
- Identify the affected family, model, and upgrade time.
- Allow the normal download and reboot estimate, extending it for congested links.
- Check Dashboard details and event logs.
- Test client forwarding independently from cloud status.
- Check local status, power, links, WAN, DNS, firewall, and upstream routing.
- For MX/MS designs, verify the MX before touching downstream switches.
- Use Organization > Monitor > Firmware upgrades to roll back only when the recent upgrade is the supported and evidenced cause.
- After recovery, verify both Dashboard check-in and real client traffic.
- Escalate with model, version, timeline, logs, and completed checks if the problem persists.
