If a Lightning payment is marked pending or in flight, do not immediately send it again. First record the payment details and check the wallet’s status screen. A payment with an HTLC already locked into a route must settle or time out; it is not equivalent to a failed payment. Retry only after the wallet reports a final failure. If the payment completed but cost more than expected, compare the amount delivered with the total amount sent, then review the fee limit before making another attempt.
Identify the payment state before doing anything else
Lightning wallets commonly distinguish between an initiated payment, an in-flight or pending payment, a succeeded payment and a failed payment. The labels vary by wallet, but the operational difference is critical: a failed attempt can usually be tried again, while an in-flight attempt may still be holding an HTLC on one or more channels.

Record the invoice or payment identifier, amount, time, wallet name and version, and the exact status or error text. This information lets support distinguish a wallet display problem from an unresolved payment. Never give support a seed phrase, private key or recovery phrase.
Why a pending Lightning payment cannot simply be cancelled
Lightning uses hashed time-locked contracts (HTLCs) to carry a payment across multiple channels. Once an HTLC is committed on a route, each participant is waiting for either the recipient’s secret preimage or the applicable timeout. If the recipient does not reveal the preimage, or a forwarding node goes offline, the contracts can remain unresolved until their time locks expire.

Lightning Labs’ payment guide describes this situation as a “stuck payment”: it cannot be retried while it is in that state, and the sender may have to wait for the payment to resolve as failed or successful. That guidance does not provide a universal number of minutes or hours that applies to every wallet, route or implementation.
For that reason, a second payment against the same invoice is dangerous. The first attempt could still settle, producing a duplicate payment. A wallet may expose a cancellation or recovery command, but controls are implementation-specific; there is no universal consumer cancellation sequence.
Step-by-step response to a payment that is pending
1. Capture the evidence
Take note of the invoice, payment hash or wallet-generated identifier, the requested amount, the time you sent it, and the wallet’s displayed state. Save the exact error text if one appears. Screenshots can help support, but redact balances, addresses and any sensitive recovery information.
2. Inspect the wallet’s payment history
Open the wallet’s payment history, select the transaction and expand its details. Look for a state such as in flight, pending, complete or failed, along with route, fee and failure information. Consumer wallet menus are not standardized, so the precise path and wording depend on the wallet and version.

3. Track the payment with node software when applicable
Node operators should use the tracking tool documented for their implementation. LND’s TrackPaymentV2 reports whether a payment is in flight, succeeded or failed. Core Lightning documents lightning-paystatus for checking progress and handling retries. These tools provide more detail than a simple notification and can reveal whether the payment is still being attempted.
4. Wait while it remains in flight
Do not issue a second payment merely because the recipient has not yet seen the funds. Ask the recipient to check the invoice status on their side, but keep the original attempt intact. If the status does not change, contact the wallet or node operator with the identifier and timestamp. Ask what safe recovery procedure that specific software supports rather than requesting a force close or deleting the transaction record.
5. Retry only after a final failure
When the wallet explicitly reports failed, verify that the invoice is still valid, the destination is correct and the amount has not changed. LND’s guidance distinguishes a route failure that occurs before an HTLC is locked from a payment already in flight: the former can generally be retried, while the latter must first resolve. Do not apply the safe-retry advice to a transaction that still says pending or in flight.
Common failure messages and what they tell you

A route error does not identify a particular dishonest or defective node. Routing failures can occur because of changing liquidity, channel policies, temporary outages or limits in the sender’s configuration.

Why the recipient may get less than you sent
Lightning does not have one universal flat transaction fee. Forwarding nodes set their own policies, commonly combining a fixed base fee for each forwarded HTLC with a variable fee rate based on the amount. A multi-hop payment can therefore accumulate a charge at every forwarding hop.
Multi-part payments can add more base-fee charges because the wallet divides the payment over multiple routes. Splitting a payment may improve the chance of finding enough liquidity, but it can cost more than a single route with one set of forwarding fees.
The useful calculation is:
routing cost = total amount sent − amount delivered to the destination
Core Lightning exposes this distinction with amount_msat, the amount the recipient receives, and amount_sent_msat, the total sent including fees. Other wallets may use different labels, so inspect the payment details rather than assuming the invoice amount equals the debit from your balance.

Compare these values in the completed payment record. A larger debit is not automatically an error if the difference matches the route fees you accepted, but an unexplained discrepancy is a reason to contact the wallet provider with the payment identifier.
Set a fee limit before making another attempt
A fee limit tells the sender how much routing cost it may accept for a new payment. The exact control and unit differ among wallets. Use the wallet’s current fee preview and choose the maximum amount you are genuinely willing to pay; there is no evidence-based universal cap that suits every payment size, destination or network condition.
- Do not set the limit to zero unless you intentionally require a zero-fee route. LND’s API guidance notes that zero means only zero-fee routes will be considered and often results in no route being found.
- Do not assume a very low cap is safer. Core Lightning can report “route too expensive” when a route’s fee or total lock time exceeds configured limits. A cap below the available routes trades cost protection for a higher chance of failure.
- Check whether the limit applies per part or to the whole payment. Multi-part payments may have several base fees, and wallets present this setting differently.
- Review the delay constraint as well as the fee. Some implementations reject a route when its total lock time exceeds the configured maximum, even if the fee is acceptable.
After changing a limit, create a new attempt only when the previous attempt has a final failed state. Keep the original payment record so you can distinguish the two attempts.

- Wait for the original record to show failed, not merely delayed or pending.
- Confirm the invoice has not expired and that the recipient still wants payment. If in doubt, request a new invoice.
- Match the destination and amount to the recipient’s request. Do not edit an invoice’s encoded data.
- Review the wallet’s fee estimate, maximum fee and any maximum delay setting.
- Send once and watch the new payment’s status. Keep its identifier separate from the first attempt.
- If it fails again, read the specific error before changing settings repeatedly. Repeated retries can waste fees or indicate a liquidity problem that settings alone cannot solve.
Why force-closing a channel is not a payment fix
A channel force close is a unilateral channel operation, not a button for cancelling an individual payment. It changes the channel’s on-chain state and can affect every commitment associated with that channel. Lightning Labs explains that funds belonging to the party initiating a force close may be locked for a period before they can be redeemed.

Force closure is therefore not the standard response to an ordinary pending payment. It can introduce on-chain fees, waiting periods and additional recovery work while leaving the original payment question unresolved. Use the wallet or node provider’s documented channel-recovery procedure only when there is a separate, persistent channel problem and you understand the consequences.
When to contact support and what to provide
Contact support when a payment stays in flight beyond the period your wallet normally displays, when the completed amount does not match the payment details, or when the wallet repeatedly reports route or state errors. Provide the wallet name and version, operating system if relevant, payment identifier or hash, invoice expiration, amount, timestamp, displayed state, exact error and whether the recipient received anything.
Do not send a seed phrase, private key, wallet backup, authentication code or unrestricted node credentials. A legitimate support process should be able to investigate a payment using its identifier and logs with sensitive secrets redacted.

A practical decision checklist
- Pending or in flight: stop, do not duplicate the invoice, track the status and ask the provider about safe recovery.
- Failed before an HTLC was locked: verify the invoice, review the fee limit and retry once.
- Completed with a higher debit: compare amount received with total sent; the difference is the routing cost.
- Route too expensive: decide the maximum acceptable fee and delay, then retry only after a terminal failure.
- No route: check connectivity, liquidity and limits; a different route or later attempt may be required.
- Considering force close: stop and treat channel recovery as a separate technical operation with possible fund-locking delays.
What you should expect from a well-designed wallet
A wallet cannot guarantee that every route will be available, but its payment record should make the important distinctions visible. Look for a clear terminal state, a payment identifier, the amount received, the total sent, the routing fee and any route or failure reason. For advanced users, documented status APIs such as LND’s TrackPaymentV2 and Core Lightning’s lightning-paystatus make it possible to monitor an attempt rather than guessing from a spinner.
If your wallet hides whether an attempt is still in flight, does not show the total debit or gives no way to export a payment identifier, ask its support team how it prevents duplicate payments and how it handles unresolved HTLCs. Those answers matter more than a generic promise of “fast” payments when something goes wrong.
