Stay inside, shut the door, and move people and pets away from it. Do not open the door to approach, photograph at close range, feed, or scare the animal. Contact your local wildlife authority to report the sighting; call your local emergency number if someone is in immediate danger.

The guidance available for this situation is strongest for mountain lions—also called cougars or pumas—and is not a universal protocol for every large cat or location. The advice to remain indoors applies official guidance not to approach mountain lions to the specific situation of an animal at a door; the sources do not set out a separate door-specific procedure. Keep that distinction in mind: the steps for a person already outside are not a reason to leave the house or confront the animal.

What to do while the animal is at the door

  1. Keep the door closed and stay indoors. Move everyone away from the entrance and keep children close. Do not step outside to get a better look or try to make the animal leave. The safest door-specific application of official no-approach guidance is to stay behind the closed door and keep your distance.
  2. Bring household pets inside and keep them away from the entrance. If a pet is already outside, do not put yourself at risk by going out to retrieve it while the animal is present. Wildlife guidance advises keeping pets secure; keeping household pets indoors while a wild cat is at the door is a cautious application of that advice.
  3. Give the animal space and an unobstructed way to leave. Do not corner it, chase it, or block its route if it moves away from the door. Do not try to make it leave by going outside, shouting at close range, feeding it, or using a product. The goal is not to interact with the animal; it is to avoid contact and let it move away.
  4. Report the sighting to the local wildlife authority. If a person faces immediate danger, call the emergency number for your location. Contact details and reporting procedures differ by jurisdiction; do not assume a number used in one state or country applies elsewhere.

For mountain lions, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) says, “Never approach a mountain lion,” and the National Park Service (NPS) advises, “Do not run or turn your back on a lion.” Those are encounter precautions—not instructions to open the door or confront an animal from outside.

What not to do

Do not open the door to take a close-up photograph, get a clearer look, offer food, or frighten the animal into moving. CDFW’s instruction is not to approach; NPS advises giving a lion space and a way to get away. A close encounter can put you nearer to the animal and may interfere with its ability to leave. A sighting can be reported without going outside to document it.

Do not treat a consumer product as a substitute for distance or local help. Outdoor lights and covered shelters can be part of future prevention, but a light, fence, kennel, spray, or alarm is not a reason to approach or try to deter an animal that is currently at the door. No particular product is identified as an appropriate immediate deterrent.

If someone is already outside

If a person is outside near a mountain lion, they should not run, turn away, or crouch. Face the animal, stand upright, make themselves look larger, and make noise. If it moves closer, back away slowly while continuing to face it, and leave it an escape route. If attacked, fight back.

This guidance is for someone already outside. It is not a reason for anyone indoors to leave the house, open a door, or approach the animal. In particular, the advice to appear larger or make noise should not be turned into a plan to go outside and scare a cat away from the entrance. If you are indoors, stay there and keep others away from the door.

The NPS wording, “Do not run or turn your back on a lion,” and CDFW’s no-approach advice both concern an encounter with a mountain lion. They do not establish a universal response for every species of large cat. If the animal is not a mountain lion, or you are unsure what it is, avoid contact and follow the local wildlife authority’s direction.

When and whom to call

For a sighting or continuing concern, contact the wildlife agency responsible for the area. Use local emergency services if someone is in immediate danger. The correct reporting contact depends on where you live, so use the agency and emergency number applicable to your location rather than a number copied from a different jurisdiction.

For example, New Mexico’s Department of Game and Fish directs residents to contact its area offices or statewide number about residential cougar sightings, and to call 911 in an emergency. That is New Mexico-specific guidance, not a general number for other places. The practical distinction is straightforward: a wildlife authority is the relevant contact for a sighting or ongoing concern; emergency services are for a person in immediate danger.

If the animal leaves before you reach the agency, you can still report the sighting or ask for local advice, especially if the concern is recurring. Do not follow the animal to establish where it went. Agencies and reporting routes differ, and no single response time or contact applies everywhere.

Why the advice is cautious, not panicked

Mountain lions generally avoid people, but a sighting still warrants distance and calm precautions. CDFW says mountain lions typically pose little threat to humans and generally avoid human interaction; it also says few sightings result in an animal being identified as an imminent threat to public safety. Those statements provide context, not a reason to approach or ignore a sighting.

CDFW reports fewer than 50 verified mountain lion attacks on humans in California since 1890, including six fatal incidents. The page does not state a year for that figure. It is a California historical count—not a risk estimate for another region, another species, or the individual animal at your door. It should not be read as a prediction that a particular encounter is safe, nor generalized to leopards, jaguars, tigers, or wild cats outside California.

The sensible response is neither panic nor attempted confrontation: keep the door shut, move people and pets away, give the animal room to leave, and contact the appropriate local authority. The low level of risk described by CDFW is compatible with taking those simple precautions.

After the animal leaves

Once it has moved away, avoid following it. If the sighting raises an ongoing concern, contact the relevant wildlife authority for local advice. Do not assume that the animal has left the broader area just because it is no longer at the door, and do not go outside to search for it. No universal waiting period or all-clear procedure is specified.

For mountain-lion prevention, CDFW recommends steps that reduce opportunities for an animal to approach unseen or find shelter or prey close to the home:

  • Use outdoor lighting. CDFW recommends outdoor lighting to make it more difficult for mountain lions to approach unseen. This is a future prevention measure, not an immediate response while an animal is at the door.
  • Remove dense vegetation that could provide hiding places. This is a property-maintenance step for reducing cover, not a reason to inspect or clear vegetation while the animal is present.
  • Deer-proof the property. CDFW includes deer-proofing among its prevention recommendations. No particular method or product is specified.
  • Keep outdoor large pets in sturdy, covered shelters at night. CDFW recommends these shelters for outdoor large pets and livestock. Household pets should be kept inside and away from the entrance during an active sighting.
  • Consider wildlife-exclusion fencing where appropriate to address recurring property conflicts. CDFW lists fencing among prevention recommendations, but no provider, product, or affiliate service was verified.

These measures are for reducing future risks. They are not guarantees that a wild cat will never visit, and none changes the immediate advice to stay indoors and avoid contact if one appears. No specific light, fence, shelter, spray, or alarm model has been evaluated.

Do not assume every large cat follows the same guidance

The title describes a situation, not a species or location. The cited official advice is primarily about mountain lions in the United States. It should not be presented as a universal response for leopards, jaguars, tigers, or other large cats. Their circumstances and local rules may differ; no species-specific encounter procedures are provided for them.

For an unidentified animal, keep people and pets inside, avoid contact, and seek direction from local wildlife authorities or emergency services as circumstances require. Reporting routes and wildlife rules vary by jurisdiction. If someone is in immediate danger, contact the local emergency number; otherwise, contact the wildlife authority responsible for the area.

Does mountain-lion advice apply to every large wild cat?

No. The cited official guidance is primarily about mountain lions in the United States. For an unidentified animal or another species, avoid contact and seek direction from the local wildlife authority; use emergency services if someone is in immediate danger.

What should I do after the animal leaves?

Do not follow or search for it. Contact the local wildlife authority if you have an ongoing concern. For future mountain-lion prevention, CDFW recommends outdoor lighting, removing dense vegetation, deer-proofing property, sturdy covered nighttime shelters for outdoor large pets, and wildlife-exclusion fencing where appropriate.

The Bottom Line

Keep the door shut, stay inside, and move people and pets away. Do not approach or try to scare the animal. Report the sighting to your local wildlife authority, and call the local emergency number if someone is in immediate danger. Mountain-lion encounter advice is not a universal protocol for every large cat.
