If your phone feels excessively hot while charging, unplug it, stop using it, and let it cool in a cooler, ventilated place. Don’t keep charging a phone that is too hot to touch. Once it has cooled, check the charger and cable, charging setup, active apps, port warnings, and battery settings. If the heat or slow charging persists, or you see damage, contact the phone maker or an authorized repair provider.
Why is my phone charging slowly and getting hot?
A phone can become warm during fast charging or while running demanding tasks. Excessive heat is different: a phone may reduce charging speed or pause charging temporarily to protect itself. Samsung Support states: “If the device temperature becomes too high, charging may stop temporarily or charging speed may decrease.” A temporary slowdown can therefore be a response to heat, not proof that the battery has failed.
Charging speed depends on more than battery size. The phone’s supported charging standard, adapter, cable, port, charging settings, temperature, and activity all matter. A large battery does not by itself indicate a defect or tell you which charger wattage is compatible. A higher-wattage adapter will not necessarily make every phone charge faster.
Heat can come from gaming, video recording, streaming, navigation, setup or backup restoration, downloads, direct sunlight, or charging in a poorly ventilated place. Several factors can overlap: a demanding app can warm the phone while a weak or shared power source delivers less power than the phone can use. Look at the whole setup rather than assuming that battery capacity alone explains the symptom.

Is it normal for a phone to get warm while charging?
Some warmth can be normal, especially during fast charging or heavy use. It is more concerning when the phone becomes excessively hot, shows repeated temperature alerts, pauses charging repeatedly, or remains slow to charge after it cools and you check the setup. A phone that is simply warm is not the same as one that is too hot to touch or displaying recurring warnings.
Temperature guidance is model-specific. Apple says to avoid using or charging an iPhone in ambient temperatures above 35°C (95°F), because doing so can permanently reduce battery lifespan. That is Apple’s guidance for iPhone use, not a universal temperature threshold for all phones. Do not use that figure as a general pass/fail test for another model.
What should I do if my phone overheats while charging?
- Disconnect power. If the phone is excessively hot, unplug it. Do not continue charging a device that is too hot to touch.
- Move it to a safer place. Keep it away from direct sun, hot vehicles, bedding, and enclosed or poorly ventilated areas. Place it somewhere cooler with airflow.
- Stop demanding tasks. Pause gaming, video recording, navigation, streaming, downloads, or other heavy activity and wait for the phone to cool. Google and Samsung both advise disconnecting power and allowing an overheated device to cool before charging again.
- Resume only after it has cooled. Then check the accessories, port, warnings, and settings below before trying again.
If the phone is too hot to touch, or its charging port looks burned, melted, or corroded, stop using the charging setup and seek support rather than testing it with another cable. Do not try to force charging to resume while a temperature warning is active. Cooling and checking the setup are sensible first steps, but recurring heat or alerts need attention from the manufacturer or authorized service.

Yes. A damaged, loose, incompatible, or low-output adapter or cable can contribute to slow charging. A computer or car port, hub, or multiport adapter may supply less power than a dedicated charger. Check the adapter and cable for visible damage, confirm both ends are firmly connected, and try a known-good combination that is compatible with your exact phone. If a cable or connector is hot, damaged, burned, or corroded, stop using it.
Compare chargers by compatibility with the phone’s charging standard, supported output and connector, cable compatibility and condition, and whether the power source is dedicated or shared. Buy a replacement only after checking the phone maker’s specifications; a new charger will not resolve thermal throttling or a hardware fault. Check the current adapter, cable, and power source first so you do not replace an accessory that was not the problem.
For supported iPhone models, Apple identifies USB-C Power Delivery with a suitable cable as a faster wired charging option. Galaxy charging capabilities and settings vary by model, and Samsung recommends accessories designed for the device. Do not assume the highest-wattage adapter is the best fit. The phone model matters, and this article cannot identify a universal wattage or promise a particular charging time.

If you do shop for a replacement, look for a charger that explicitly supports the exact phone’s charging standard and the right connector, then pair it with a compatible, undamaged cable. A reputable manufacturer or authorized seller is preferable. The same checks apply when comparing cable options: connector fit and compatibility matter, not just appearance. If a compatible known-good charger still leads to overheating or abnormally slow charging, stop treating the charger as the only likely cause and consider service.

Reduce heat and power demand while charging
- Pause games, camera recording, high-quality video streaming, and prolonged navigation.
- If the phone is setting up, restoring a backup, or downloading large files, let that work finish or pause it if practical.
- Lower screen brightness and avoid direct sunlight.
- Charge in an open, ventilated place rather than on bedding or in an enclosed space.
These actions address two sources of the problem: the phone doing demanding work while it charges and the surrounding environment trapping heat. They can reduce simultaneous workload and heat, but are not a substitute for service if slow charging or overheating continues. If the phone cools and charges normally once heavy activity stops, that observation is useful; it still does not guarantee that no other issue exists.
Inspect the port and charging warnings safely
With the phone off, visually check the charging port for debris, moisture warnings, or obvious damage. Do not insert objects into a USB-C port, scrape it, or use a cable or connector that is hot, damaged, burned, or corroded. A visible problem is a reason to stop and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, not to probe inside the port.
If a Pixel port appears to contain debris, Google’s instructions say to face the port downward and gently tap the phone against a hand; do not put anything into the port. Samsung says charging may stop when moisture is detected, and the port must be dry even on a water-resistant device. Follow the instructions for your particular phone rather than improvising a cleaning method. A moisture alert should not be dismissed simply because the phone is described as water-resistant.
Pay attention to what the phone reports. A moisture, debris, temperature, or unplug warning can explain why charging is interrupted or should not continue. If the same warning returns after you follow the maker’s guidance, get support rather than repeatedly reconnecting the cable. Google advises support for recurring unplug warnings and an authorized repair route for a visibly damaged port.
Check charging settings and on-screen messages
Look for slow-charger, incompatible-charger, temperature, moisture, or debris alerts. These messages can help identify a charging condition, but do not by themselves prove that the battery or phone has failed. Note which warning appears and whether it returns after the device cools and you have checked the cable and power source.

Check the phone’s battery or charging settings for fast charging and charge protection. On some Galaxy devices, battery protection limits the maximum charge level; the setting name and menu location vary by model and software. A limit on the maximum level may be an intentional protection setting, not a sign that the phone cannot charge correctly. Review the setting for your model before changing it.
Apple documents a Slow Charger message on supported iOS versions and a charge-time estimate in iOS 26. Menu labels and available indicators can change with the phone and software version. Treat these as diagnostic clues: check what the device says, then compare it with the charger, cable, temperature, and activity rather than assuming a single message identifies a failed component.
How to compare charger or repair options
For a charger, compare compatibility with the exact phone and its charging standard, supported output and connector, cable fit and condition, and whether power comes from a dedicated source or a shared hub or multiport adapter. Do not rank chargers by wattage alone. The phone maker’s specifications are the relevant reference because charging capability varies by model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor service, compare whether the provider is manufacturer-authorized, what diagnostics are included, possible warranty implications, location, and the repair estimate. No local prices or warranty coverage are established here, so confirm both directly with the provider. A repair referral should not be treated as a guaranteed price or an endorsement of a particular service without checking its terms.

Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider if the port appears burned, melted, or corroded; a cable is damaged; the phone is too hot to touch; alerts recur; or slow charging continues after the phone cools and you complete basic checks. Samsung advises service inspection for persistent charging issues, and Google directs users to support for recurring unplug warnings or an authorized repair route for a visibly damaged port.
Do not keep swapping chargers when there is visible port damage, a damaged accessory, or repeated overheating. Likewise, do not conclude that a battery needs replacement just because charging is slow: temperature, device workload, charging settings, connection, and accessory compatibility can all affect speed. If basic checks do not resolve the symptom, let the phone maker or authorized provider assess it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my phone charging slowly and getting hot?
Possible causes include fast charging or demanding activity that warms the phone, a low-output or incompatible adapter or cable, a shared power source, port debris or moisture, and charging settings. Heat can also make the phone reduce charging speed or temporarily pause charging. Check the full setup after the phone cools; battery size alone does not identify the cause.
Can I use a higher-wattage charger to make my phone charge faster?
Not necessarily. Charging speed depends on the exact phone’s supported charging standard, the adapter and cable, the power source, settings, temperature, and device activity. Check the phone maker’s specifications and choose a compatible charger rather than comparing wattage alone.
What should I do if my phone is too hot to touch while charging?
Unplug it, stop using it, and move it to a cooler, ventilated place away from direct sun, hot vehicles, bedding, or enclosed spaces. Do not resume charging until it has cooled. If it remains abnormally hot, alerts recur, or you see port damage, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
Can I clean debris from a USB-C charging port with a small object?
No. Do not insert objects into or scrape a USB-C port. For a Pixel port that appears to contain debris, Google’s instructions say to face it downward and gently tap the phone against a hand. Follow the specific phone maker’s guidance, and seek support for visible damage or recurring warnings.
Does a moisture warning mean I can keep charging if my phone is water-resistant?
No. Samsung says charging may stop when moisture is detected and the port must be dry, even on water-resistant models. Follow the instructions for your exact phone and do not bypass the warning or keep reconnecting a cable if the alert recurs.

Seek manufacturer or authorized service if the phone is too hot to touch, the port is burned, melted, or corroded, a cable is damaged, warnings recur, or slow charging persists after cooling and basic checks. Ask about diagnostic scope, authorization, warranty implications, location, and the estimate.
The Bottom Line
Unplug an excessively hot phone and let it cool before troubleshooting. Then check compatible, undamaged charging accessories, workload, ventilation, port warnings, and charging settings. Do not guess at wattage or probe a USB-C port. If the phone remains too hot, slow to charge, repeatedly warns, or shows damage, contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider.
