Assume the position is real until your account proves otherwise. First check your current Futures position and open orders, then reconcile the order ID and filled quantity with Kraken’s order-status and fills records. Do not submit a replacement order while the cancellation and execution state is unclear.
Kraken documents one specific explanation: on markets using Maker Protection, a held aggressive order can still be released and trade after you cancel it. This does not mean every apparently late fill is normal; verify whether Maker Protection covered that contract and preserve the event records if the account does not reconcile.
Immediate steps before you do anything else
- Check exposure. In the Kraken Futures interface, inspect the current Positions area for the contract, side, size and entry price, and inspect Open Orders for anything still working. If a position exists, treat it as live risk until you deliberately reduce or hedge it.
- Record the order identifier. Save the exchange order ID and, if you supplied one, the client order ID. Also note the contract symbol, buy or sell side, requested size and any amount already shown as executed.
- Reconcile execution records. Compare the order’s status and filled quantity with individual fills. A fill record should identify the order ID, fill ID, symbol, side, size, price and fill time.
- Do not retry the placement. Kraken’s Maker Protection guidance says, “Do not retry the placement after a successful cancel.” Sending a new order before the first one is reconciled can create a second, unintended position.
- Preserve evidence. Keep UTC timestamps, cancel requests and acknowledgments, fill IDs, prices, screenshots and relevant API or WebSocket messages before logs rotate.
If the position, order status and fills disagree, stop changing the position merely to make the screens look consistent. Contact Kraken through the currently authenticated support route and provide the records needed to reconstruct the sequence.
Why a cancellation can be followed by a fill
A cancel request and an execution are separate events. A cancel acknowledgment means Kraken processed the cancellation request for the order state it could act on; it is not a universal promise that no matching or release event can occur afterward.

The documented case involves Maker Protection, which Kraken applies only to selected derivatives markets. The feature holds certain aggressive orders briefly rather than immediately releasing them to the order book. Kraken does not expose a separate public-API “held” status, so an order can look like an ordinary working order while this internal hold is in effect.
The hold is intended to protect maker treatment when an order would otherwise cross the spread. Kraken says aggressive orders can experience additional latency and that the configured duration can change. Use the market’s makerProtectionMillis setting rather than assuming a permanent delay. Kraken’s current documentation describes a window of no more than 100 milliseconds for the scenario it covers; confirm the live market setting before relying on that number.
The release sequence
When a held limit order is canceled, Kraken says the cancel and the order’s own response are separate. The held order can be released as immediate-or-cancel (IOC), consume available liquidity, and discard any remainder. The order response may arrive about one protection window later than the cancel response. Consequently, a successful cancel message and a subsequent fill are not necessarily contradictory messages.

Confirm whether Maker Protection applies to your contract
Do not use Maker Protection as a blanket explanation for every late-looking Futures fill. Check the specific market’s current documentation or settings. Kraken identifies selected derivatives markets, and says every perpetual listed after September 24, 2026 has Maker Protection from launch. New additions are announced ahead of maintenance windows.
The date and coverage are operational details, not a guarantee about an individual order. A contract may be outside the covered set, the setting may have changed, or your order may have been accepted after the hold had already ended. Record the market and the applicable setting when you investigate.
How to reconcile the order in Kraken’s records
Using the web interface
An API key is not required to perform the basic investigation in Kraken’s web interface. Open the Futures trading account, review Positions and Open Orders, then open the order or trade history views available for the contract. Capture the order ID, status, requested amount, executed amount, average or individual execution prices and timestamps. The exact layout can change, so rely on the values attached to the order rather than a color or notification alone.

Using Futures REST order status
Programmatic traders can use Kraken’s Get Specific Orders’ Status Futures endpoint for a very recent order. Kraken states that it returns specified orders that are open or were filled or canceled within the previous five seconds. It is therefore useful immediately after a disputed cancel, but it is not a long-term history view. Query the order ID and save the complete response, including status and executed quantity.

Using the Futures fills endpoint
Use Kraken’s Get your fills endpoint to verify execution-level facts across Futures contracts. Each fill includes the order ID, fill ID, symbol, side, size, price and fill time. Without a lastFillTime argument, Kraken returns the latest 100 fills; use the documented time or pagination options when the execution is older or your account has more than 100 recent fills. Match fills by order ID, not only by symbol or side.
Choosing the right verification method

Kraken REST API calls are rate limited. Query only what you need, respect the documented limits and preserve the first responses instead of repeatedly polling until records disappear.
What WebSocket and FIX users should look for
WebSocket order events
Kraken’s verbose Futures WebSocket order feed identifies reasons including partial_fill, full_fill and cancelled_by_user. Save the order snapshot and every delta surrounding the cancel. Compare event order and timestamps, then total the quantities across partial fills. A final “order removed” event is not enough to classify the outcome if the preceding fills were not retained.
FIX execution reports
FIX users should preserve execution reports and compare the order ID, execution ID, cumulative quantity, last quantity, status and UTC transaction time. Kraken warns that a late-reported trade may produce a restated execution report. Do not treat the first report as immutable when a later report changes the cumulative execution.

Cancel acknowledgments
Evaluate a cancel acknowledgment alongside order status and fills. Kraken’s WebSocket Cancel Order documentation describes per-order status messages; if fewer updates arrive than requested and an error is returned, an order may not have been canceled. Record which order each acknowledgment refers to, especially when canceling multiple IDs in one request.
Maker Protection timing: what to do while the order is held
If you have confirmed that the market uses Maker Protection and the order was submitted only moments ago, avoid repeatedly canceling and replacing it. Kraken’s article says that if nothing should remain resting and nothing new should trade, wait out the protection window—its current description says at most 100 milliseconds—and then cancel. Treat that as guidance for the documented Maker Protection scenario, not as a universal timing rule for all Kraken Futures orders.
Because the configured value can change, use makerProtectionMillis for the current market where available. A network delay, client clock difference or delayed event delivery can make a response appear later than the exchange-side action. Use Kraken’s UTC transaction or fill times when reconstructing the sequence.

If only part of the order filled
Sum the individual fill sizes and compare that total with the position size and the order’s executed quantity. A canceled remainder should not be assumed to have traded. If the position is larger than the fills you can currently see, obtain the remaining records using the fills endpoint’s documented time or pagination parameters and check for a delayed report.

If the order appears canceled but a position exists
Do not open an offsetting “cleanup” trade automatically. First identify whether the position came from the disputed order, another order on the same contract, funding or a manual action. Match order IDs and fill IDs, then decide whether to reduce the verified exposure according to your risk plan. The cancellation display may describe the resting remainder while the position reflects an earlier or released execution.
If no position is visible but a fill is reported
Check whether the fill was later offset, whether the interface is displaying a different subaccount or contract, and whether the position view is delayed. The fill record, rather than a transient notification, is the evidence of an execution; preserve both while support investigates any mismatch.
When and how to contact Kraken
Escalate when the authenticated account records cannot be reconciled, when a fill has an unknown order ID, when quantities do not add up, or when the cancel acknowledgment conflicts with execution reports after the relevant reporting window.
Provide a concise timeline containing:
- Order ID and client order ID, if used
- Contract symbol and buy or sell side
- Requested size and each executed size
- Cancel request time and acknowledgment time, in UTC
- Fill IDs, prices and fill times
- REST responses, WebSocket snapshots and deltas, or FIX reports
- Screenshots showing the position and order state
- The market’s Maker Protection status or
makerProtectionMillisvalue, if available
Do not send API secrets, authentication headers or private keys in a support ticket. Kraken’s documented event fields are sufficient for an initial review. Verify the current support route from your logged-in account because response times and remedies are not established here.
Common mistakes that make the incident worse
- Submitting a duplicate order: this can create a second position while the first order is still being released or reported.
- Assuming “canceled” means “never executed”: Maker Protection specifically allows a canceled held order to fill.
- Treating
ORDER_NOT_FOUNDas proof of no trade: Kraken documents that a held IOC, FOK or market order can return that error and still arrive at release. - Relying on one screen: order status, fills and positions answer different questions and must be compared.
- Discarding event logs: WebSocket and FIX sequences may contain the explanation that a final interface view omits.
- Using a regional rule as a universal rule: the Payward MENA Market Rulebook’s 2022 statement that cancellation requests may not be processed immediately is regional and dated; it should not be presented as a current rule for all Kraken Futures users.
- Using a dead man’s switch to reverse the trade: Kraken’s Futures dead-man’s-switch feature is a prospective network-failure safeguard, not a way to undo an execution that already occurred.
What is—and is not—known about frequency
Kraken has not published a material statistic showing how often Futures orders fill after a cancel, so no reliable percentage should be attached to the problem. The documented 100-millisecond ceiling and the launch coverage for perpetuals listed after September 24, 2026 describe operating behavior for Maker Protection, not the prevalence of late fills.
