If you think a homebrew tool has affected your PlayStation, stop using it, secure your email and PlayStation accounts, and check for unfamiliar account or payment activity. Troubleshoot the console with PlayStation’s official instructions before considering a reset. A factory reset or system-software reinstall can erase your data, and Sony’s instructions describe recovery steps—not a way to prove or remove malware from a particular tool.
Start with the risk you can verify
A console problem and an account compromise are different incidents. A PlayStation that freezes, fails to start, or behaves unexpectedly may need software or hardware troubleshooting; unfamiliar sign-in details, account changes, or purchases point to an account-security issue. One does not prove the other. PlayStation’s official guidance covers account recovery and console troubleshooting, but does not establish that a particular homebrew tool is malicious or provide a universal malware-removal procedure.
Try to separate what you observed from what you suspect. For example, a console symptom after using a tool is worth troubleshooting, but by itself it does not establish that the tool caused the problem. Likewise, an unfamiliar purchase or a changed sign-in detail is an account warning that should be handled through PlayStation’s account-security process, whether or not the console is also having trouble. Keeping those two tracks separate helps you choose the right next step instead of reaching for a destructive reset to solve an account issue.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Stop using the tool
Close it and do not run it again while you assess the problem. Avoid entering your PlayStation or email credentials into the tool, unofficial pages, or links it provides. This is a cautious response to uncertainty, not evidence that every homebrew tool is malware. Do not download an alleged cleaner or recovery utility simply because it promises to undo the problem; the official sources reviewed here do not support a universal third-party cleanup tool.

Identify what happened
- Possible account incident: you see a sign-in alert, changed sign-in information, a payment you do not recognize, or activity you did not initiate.
- Possible console incident: the system crashes, will not start normally, or has another persistent technical problem.
- Both, or unclear: protect the account first, then use official console troubleshooting. Keep notes on the symptoms and any account notifications so you can explain the issue to support.
As you make that assessment, note which console you use (PS4 or PS5), what stopped working, when you first noticed it, and whether you received an account or payment notification. Save relevant messages or transaction details for reference. This does not diagnose the cause, but it can make it easier to describe the problem accurately if you contact PlayStation Support or Repairs.
Secure your email and PlayStation account
If you see account changes you did not make, secure the email account linked to PlayStation before recovering the PlayStation account. PlayStation advises changing the email-account password first. If you cannot secure that mailbox, contact its provider. Then follow PlayStation’s account recovery process.
This order matters because the linked email account may be part of the route used to manage or recover your PlayStation account. If you cannot sign in to that mailbox, do not assume a PlayStation password change alone resolves the problem; contact the email provider about the mailbox and use PlayStation’s official recovery route for the console account. Avoid submitting credentials through links supplied by the suspicious tool or an unfamiliar page. PlayStation’s own recovery instructions are the appropriate place to start.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf someone changed your sign-in ID, online ID, or password without permission—or you cannot access the email address or verification method needed for recovery—contact PlayStation Support or the Online Assistant. The available steps may depend on your account and region. Do not keep guessing at recovery options through unofficial services; escalate through the official support route when the normal process is not available to you.
After access is restored
- Set a strong, unique password. Use a password that is not reused for your email account or other services. Reusing one password means one exposed credential may affect more than one account.
- Review security settings and sign-in methods. Check them using PlayStation’s security settings guidance. The available settings and labels may vary by region or change, so follow the current page for your account.
- Enable an additional sign-in check. Enable 2-Step Verification or use a passkey where available. PlayStation’s 2-step verification adds a sign-in check using a code received by SMS or an authenticator app. This is an account-protection measure, not a way to repair console software.
- Use distinct passwords going forward. PlayStation recommends different passwords and keeping a password manager. A password manager can help you maintain unique passwords, but it does not recover an account or replace PlayStation’s account-recovery process. See its security best practices.
If another device may still be signed in, use Account Management to sign out of all devices. The available sign-in and sign-out instructions are on PlayStation’s sign-in and sign-out page. This is relevant when you have regained account access but are concerned that an unfamiliar session may remain active. Use the official page rather than assuming that changing a console setting signs out every device.

Check purchases and payment activity
Review your PlayStation Store transaction history and subscriptions for charges or purchases you do not recognize. Look at both the purchase record and active subscriptions before concluding that a charge is unauthorized. If a charge remains unexplained, follow PlayStation’s official refund and compromised-account guidance. If you cannot access the account, contact PlayStation Support rather than trying to resolve the charge through the suspicious tool.
Keep the account question and the console question distinct: an unknown payment should be handled through the transaction, refund, and compromised-account guidance, while a console that will not start should be troubleshot through the console support instructions. A reset is not the first response to an unknown purchase, and a successful console reinstall does not settle a billing dispute.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →PlayStation’s compromised-account guidance mentions removing payment methods in the stolen-console scenario. That is not a universal requirement for every suspected homebrew-tool incident; use the account-specific steps that fit what happened. If you are unsure whether the stolen-console instructions apply, ask PlayStation Support rather than treating payment-method removal as a blanket rule for all suspected incidents.
Choose console troubleshooting by its data impact
Do not jump straight to a factory reset. Safe Mode includes distinct actions, and a settings reset or database rebuild is not the same as a full reset or system-software reinstall. Check PlayStation’s Safe Mode instructions for your console and select an option that matches the symptom. The names and available choices differ by console and the relevant support page, so read the current description on your PS4 or PS5 instructions before selecting an option.
| Action | Purpose | Data impact |
|---|---|---|
| Restore default settings | Restores settings; it is not the same operation as a full console reset. | Distinct from the full reset/reinstall options. Check the console-specific Safe Mode guidance before selecting it. |
| Rebuild database | A separate Safe Mode troubleshooting action. | Not the same as a full reset or system-software reinstall. Follow the official instructions for your console. |
| Reset or initialize the console | Returns the console to a reset state. | Removes user data. |
| Reinstall system software | Reinstalls the console’s system software using an official installation file. | Deletes all console data as part of the process. |
These options are not interchangeable. Consider the purpose of the action, the data it may affect, whether it requires an official software file, and whether the problem calls for account support or hardware repair instead. A settings or database option is a different kind of troubleshooting from resetting the console. An ordinary update and a full reinstallation also have different purposes; do not select a reinstall just because you have heard it described as a stronger update.

Before choosing a destructive option, back up anything you can still access. Sony’s reinstall guidance states: “Reinstalling your console’s system software deletes all data on your console. This process is often referred to as a ‘factory’ reset, or ‘hard’ reset.” Treat this warning literally: a full reset or system-software reinstall removes user data, so pause and consider what you need to preserve before proceeding. A reinstall is a troubleshooting and recovery option; completing it does not establish that a homebrew tool was malware or prove that malware has been removed.
Reinstall only with PlayStation’s official instructions
If ordinary troubleshooting does not resolve the problem and you decide a full reinstall is appropriate, use PlayStation’s instructions for the exact console model. The cited procedure requires a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT and the console-specific system-software file. A USB flash drive in this procedure is simply a way to carry the official installation file; it is not a malware scanner or treatment. The Australia-localized PS5 and PS4 Safe Mode reinstall guide names these paths and files:
- PS5:
PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP - PS4:
PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP
The folder names and file names are part of the official procedure. Follow the guide for your specific console rather than mixing PS4 and PS5 instructions or assuming an update file is the same as the reinstall file. Use the current file and steps shown on the applicable PlayStation support page; do not substitute update files from other sources or follow an unofficial installation method. Check the support page immediately before using it because instructions, files, and menu wording can change.
Sony warns that altered consoles may not operate properly or accept official update data. Its system-software update guidance also warns that unauthorized update sources or methods may affect warranty and repair-service eligibility. Warranty outcomes depend on the circumstances and region; this warning is not a guarantee of a particular outcome. If you are unsure whether a step is appropriate, do not experiment with unofficial firmware. Use the official instructions or ask PlayStation Support.
Know when to contact support or request repair
- Account access, changed sign-in details, or suspicious activity: use PlayStation’s account recovery route or contact PlayStation Support/Online Assistant.
- Unrecognized charges: check transaction history and subscriptions, then follow the official refund and compromised-account guidance.
- Console remains unusable after official troubleshooting: if an official reinstall fails or the console still does not work, PlayStation directs users to contact support to arrange repair through PlayStation Repairs guidance.
Escalate to account support when the issue is access, changed sign-in information, or account activity. Escalate to the repair route when the console remains unusable after official troubleshooting or an official reinstall fails. If you have both kinds of problem, you may need to address both; repairing console software does not restore an account, and recovering an account does not fix a console fault.

Avoid experimenting with unofficial firmware, purported console “cleaners,” or recovery downloads from unknown sources. Official instructions can help address software problems, but they do not diagnose whether a particular homebrew tool compromised the console. No relevant published statistic or success rate was identified in the official support material reviewed here, so there is no sound basis for promising that a particular step will work in every case.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do first if I think a homebrew tool compromised my PlayStation?
Stop using the tool and do not enter PlayStation or email credentials into it or into links it provides. Check whether you have account warnings, changed sign-in details, unfamiliar purchases, or a persistent console problem. Treat account concerns through PlayStation’s official recovery route and console symptoms through official troubleshooting; one does not prove the other.
How do I recover my PlayStation account if someone changed its sign-in information?
Secure the linked email account first by changing its password; if you cannot secure that mailbox, contact its provider. Then use PlayStation’s account recovery process. If your sign-in ID, online ID, or password was changed without permission, or you cannot access the required email or verification method, contact PlayStation Support or the Online Assistant.
Should I factory reset or reinstall the console software?
Not as a first step. Safe Mode has distinct options, including settings restoration and database rebuilding, while a reset or system-software reinstall is destructive. Use the official instructions for your PS4 or PS5 and choose based on the symptoms. A reinstall is a troubleshooting option, not proof of malware or a universal malware-removal procedure.

Will a Safe Mode reinstall delete my games and saves?
Sony warns that reinstalling system software deletes all data on the console. A full reset or initialization also removes user data. Back up anything you can still access before choosing a destructive option, and check the console-specific official instructions for the data impact of each Safe Mode action.
What should I do about a purchase or payment I do not recognize?
Review PlayStation Store transaction history and subscriptions. If the charge remains unexplained, use PlayStation’s official refund and compromised-account guidance. If you cannot access the account, contact PlayStation Support. Removing payment methods is mentioned for the stolen-console scenario and is not a universal requirement for every suspected homebrew incident.
When should I contact PlayStation Support or Repairs?
