Give the robot space and do not touch, move, or try to operate it. If it blocks your way, ask a store employee to help you pass or find another route. If anyone is hurt or property is damaged, tell store staff promptly.
If a robot blocks your route
- Pause and give it room. Do not squeeze past if doing so would bring you close to the robot, and do not push a cart into it or try to move it. Some robots are designed to stop when a person or object enters a monitored protective field. The Mobile Robot Company describes that behavior for its J1600, but it should not be assumed to work identically on every store robot. The J1600 guidance is specific to that model.
- Look for a clear alternative. If another aisle or route is plainly accessible, use it rather than trying to get the robot moving. Do not step over, reach around, or crowd the machine.
- Ask an employee for help. Tell a store employee that the robot is blocking your route and ask them to assist or direct you around it. Store procedures vary; the available sources do not establish one universal response process for shoppers.
- Wait at a comfortable distance if needed. If you cannot find staff immediately or there is no safe alternate route, wait where you are not blocking other shoppers and signal an employee when one is available.
If the robot startles you
Step back if you need space, then pause long enough to see where the robot is moving. Avoid sudden attempts to stop it, grab it, or dart around it. Public-facing robots are designed for environments where people are nearby, but that does not mean every movement will feel predictable to every shopper.
UL Solutions said Simbe’s Tally received UL 3300 certification after an evaluation that included safe autonomous mobility. Sherry He, UL Solutions’ vice president and general manager of Consumer, Medical and Information Technologies, said: “Robots that move around and work in places full of people, like grocery stores or shopping aisles, need to meet a very different level of safety.” UL Solutions’ announcement concerns that robot and certification; it is not a guarantee that every robot behaves the same way or that every encounter will feel comfortable.
If you feel unsettled, move to a place with more room and ask an employee for assistance. You do not need to identify the robot’s model or understand its controls to ask for help.

What not to do
- Do not touch or push the robot. Its sensors, safety systems, and operating instructions can differ by model.
- Do not press buttons or attempt a reset. A manufacturer’s instructions for restarting a specific machine are for its operators, not shoppers. For example, the J1600 documentation describes clearing a safety field and pressing its LED start/resume button. That is not an instruction for customers to approach or restart it.
- Do not look for or press an emergency stop. OSHA’s robotics guidance addresses workplace systems and trained work contexts; it is not a shopper procedure for retail robots. OSHA’s robotics guidance should not be read as advice for customers to operate a store machine.
- Do not assume a stop means the robot is powered down. Keep a little distance and let store staff determine what is happening.
If someone is hurt or something is damaged
Notify store staff promptly and describe what happened, including where it occurred. If a person is injured, tell staff that someone needs assistance. If an item, display, or other property is damaged, point it out rather than trying to repair or move the robot yourself. The sources available do not establish a shopper-specific medical or legal protocol, so this is not a substitute for urgent help when someone needs it.
If you can do so comfortably and safely, note the aisle and approximate time and explain what you saw. Keep clear of the robot while staff respond. Do not put yourself back into a crowded or uncomfortable situation simply to gather details.

Why a robot may stop—and why the response is model-specific
A robot can stop when it detects an obstacle or when a safety field is interrupted. The Mobile Robot Company explains that its J1600 uses safety LiDAR scanners and an independent safety controller to monitor a protective field. Its operator guidance says to clear that field and use the LED start/resume button to continue the task. Those details apply to the J1600; they do not establish the design, controls, or recovery procedure for other grocery-store robots.

That distinction matters for shoppers: what looks like a simple pause may be part of a system intended to keep the machine from moving while something is in its path. A customer cannot reliably tell from appearance alone whether a robot is paused, waiting, or in need of staff attention. Leave decisions about its controls and recovery to store personnel.

What safety certifications and standards do—and do not—tell shoppers
Certification can describe an evaluation of a particular product against a standard; it is not a promise that every encounter will be trouble-free. UL Solutions reported that Simbe’s Tally received UL 3300 certification after evaluation that included safe autonomous mobility. That announcement is about Tally and its certification, not every robot found in grocery stores.
ISO lists ISO/DIS 25688, “Safety guidelines for unmanned stores,” as a draft under development. Its scope includes hazard identification, risk assessment, risk reduction, and safety measures for unmanned stores. Because it is a draft, it is not a finalized, shopper-facing procedure for what to do when an aisle robot blocks the way. ISO’s standard page gives the document’s status and scope.

- The robot is nearby but not in your way: give it room and continue without touching it.
- It blocks your route: choose a clear alternate route or ask an employee to help; do not attempt to move or restart it.
- It startles you: step back, take a moment to observe its movement, and ask staff for assistance if you need it.
- Someone is hurt or property is damaged: notify store staff promptly and keep clear while they respond.
