Leave the stream immediately, do not save or share what you saw, and use the platform’s reporting tool. If anyone appears to face an immediate threat, contact local emergency services or law enforcement instead of waiting for moderation. Then step away from the screen and get support if the exposure has upset you or a young person.
What to do in the first few minutes
1. Stop watching
Close the stream, scroll past it, or leave the app. You do not need to keep watching to understand an event or remain informed. Netsafe puts this plainly: “You do not need to watch graphic footage to understand or remain informed about an event.” Replaying the stream to check details increases your exposure without helping the person shown or improving a report.
2. Do not record, download, or forward it
Do not screenshot, screen-record, download, repost, quote-post, or send the footage in a private message. Sharing a link, recording, or screenshot can expose people who did not choose to see it, often without warning. It can also spread material involving a victim or an active emergency beyond the original audience.

If you plan to report the stream, note the platform, the account or username, the URL if it is visible, and a short factual description such as “live video appears to show serious violence.” Do not preserve the footage itself as evidence unless a law-enforcement professional specifically instructs you to do so. If copying a URL would require reopening the stream, report from the page you already have open or leave it entirely.

4. Report it through the service’s own control
Use the report menu attached to the live stream or post and choose the closest available reason. Include enough non-graphic detail for moderators to locate the material. Reporting is a request for review, not a promise of instant removal. X explicitly says that flagged content is reviewed and will not automatically receive a warning or be removed.
5. Treat an apparent immediate threat as an emergency
If someone appears to be in imminent danger, contact the emergency service or law-enforcement agency for your location immediately. YouTube’s help guidance says not to wait when you believe anyone is in imminent danger. The correct emergency number depends on your country or territory; there is no single number supported for every reader. Do not circulate the stream as a substitute for calling. Tell responders what you know without sending graphic material unless they request it.
6. Give yourself a deliberate break
After reporting, stop browsing for a while, move to another room, drink water, and talk with someone you trust. A short, intentional break is useful whether the exposure lasted seconds or several minutes. If a young person saw the stream, stay with them and follow the child-focused guidance below rather than asking them to describe every image.

How to report on major platforms
The names and locations of buttons change as services update their apps. Look for the report option on the live video, post, account, or three-dot menu. These platform-specific policies explain what each service says it will consider; they do not guarantee a particular outcome for an individual report.

YouTube
YouTube’s violent or graphic-content rules cover livestreams as well as videos, descriptions, thumbnails, comments, and other features. The service says violent or gory material intended to shock or disgust, and content encouraging violence, is not allowed. It may consider educational, documentary, scientific, or artistic context, so not every disturbing stream automatically violates the rules.
Use YouTube’s report flow and identify the livestream or associated account. If you believe anyone is in imminent danger, contact your local law-enforcement agency immediately, as YouTube’s help guidance instructs. Moderation and emergency response are separate: a platform report does not replace a call for urgent help.
Meta services
Meta says it removes particularly violent or graphic content under its policies. Some graphic or violent imagery may instead appear behind a warning label, and access is restricted for users under 18. Use the reporting guidance in the relevant Meta service’s safety or help area, because the route differs between services and app versions.
A warning label is not the same as removal, and a report is not a guarantee about how quickly a specific stream will be reviewed. Leave the content first; do not open it repeatedly to determine whether a warning has appeared.

X’s violent-content policy includes live video among highly visible areas where violent speech or media is restricted. Its sensitive-media help describes a route for reporting a post as sensitive media. You can also block or unfollow an account after leaving the post.
Reporting flags material for review. It does not automatically add a warning or remove the post, so avoid telling others that a report guarantees a takedown. If the same account repeatedly exposes you to harmful material, blocking and unfollowing can reduce future appearances while the report is being considered.
Twitch
Twitch documents a way to report the live stream itself. It also provides viewer controls for filtering some content-classification labels. Some labels are filtered by default for users under 18, while options differ for logged-out viewers and by location.

These filters apply to labeled content and are not a complete shield against unexpected exposure. Use the report-live-stream route when the broadcast itself is the problem, then adjust available content preferences after you have left it.

If a child or teenager saw the stream
Start with safety, not an interrogation
Move the young person away from the screen and calmly say that they did the right thing by telling you. Avoid asking them to replay, search for, or prove what they saw. You can ask only what is needed to decide whether someone may be in immediate danger and whether the material needs reporting.
Use simple, honest language
Say that a live video showed something unsafe or upsetting and that adults are taking steps to stop it spreading. Do not add graphic details, speculate about the people involved, or promise that the platform will remove it immediately. Children may need reassurance that seeing a disturbing image is not their fault.
Watch for continuing distress
Stay available and let the young person choose whether to talk, draw, sit quietly, or do a normal activity. If distress continues or interferes with sleep, school, eating, or daily routines, contact an appropriate local health, child-safety, or emotional-support service. The right service depends on where you live; Netsafe’s support route is specifically for people in New Zealand and should not be presented as a worldwide hotline.
How to reduce the chance of seeing it again
- Use the service’s content-preference or sensitive-media controls where available.
- Block or unfollow the account that posted or rebroadcast the material.
- Report repeat violations instead of opening each new post to inspect it.
- For a child’s account, review age-based defaults and supervision settings together, explaining that filters can reduce exposure but cannot prevent every unexpected image.
- Log out or take a temporary break if the feed keeps surfacing related posts.
Controls vary by service, account status, age, location, and app version. Twitch, for example, distinguishes between logged-out viewers and other users, and under-18 defaults do not block every form of disturbing content. Treat settings as risk reduction, not a guarantee.

What platforms can and cannot promise

UK government guidance for platform operators recommends making reporting available at relevant points during broadcasts and providing access to support resources. That is guidance for services, not evidence that every platform will respond at the same speed or in the same way.
When you need help after exposure
Feeling shaken, distracted, angry, numb, or unable to stop thinking about what appeared in the feed can happen after a brief exposure. Stop searching for related coverage, mute keywords or accounts where possible, and tell a trusted person what happened without sending the footage.
Seek local professional support if your reaction persists, worsens, or makes ordinary activities difficult.
