If a GPU water block is leaking, shut the computer down, disconnect PSU power, and do not turn it back on to test the card. Keep every PC component unpowered while you locate the leak, drain the loop, repair or replace the failed part, dry the hardware, and run a pump-only leak test. If the block is running hot without a visible leak, stop extended workloads and verify compatibility, port direction, coolant level, pump operation, trapped air, flow restriction, and GPU-to-block contact in that order.

There is no single safe temperature threshold for every graphics card. Compare your readings with the exact GPU specification and record the core, hotspot, or memory sensor being reported, along with coolant temperature, ambient temperature, workload, and pump status.

What to do immediately when coolant is leaking

A leak is an electrical and corrosion hazard, not a software troubleshooting problem. Do not keep the computer running while you watch the leak, and do not power the GPU, motherboard, drives, or other components to see whether they still work.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Shut down normally only if the system is responding safely. Otherwise use the case power button, then switch off the PSU.
  2. Disconnect AC power. Unplug the PSU from the wall and, where it is safe to do so, disconnect the PSU from the PC components before working on the loop.
  3. Locate the wet area without energizing the hardware. Place dry paper towels around fittings, plugs, tubing ends, and block ports. Keep paper, tools, and hands away from anything that could still be electrically energized.
  4. Drain enough coolant to work safely. Use the loop’s drain point or another controlled method; do not tilt a wet graphics card over the motherboard.
  5. Inspect the actual failure point. Look for a loose fitting, damaged O-ring, split tubing end, loose plug, block seam, or visible crack. Replace damaged parts rather than trying to compensate with excessive tightening.
  6. Dry every affected component completely. The graphics card, motherboard, power connectors, backplate, cables, and case surfaces all need inspection and drying. If the card is being sent for service, follow its maker’s instructions for removing liquid first; ASUS gives that instruction for selected factory water-cooled RTX cards.

After repair, refill the loop and perform a pump-only leak test with the computer’s components still unpowered. Restore normal PC power only after the loop remains sealed and all affected hardware is dry.

How to find and repair the leak

Check fittings, plugs, tubing, and seals

Clean and dry the suspected joint, then inspect it again while the pump-only test is running. A fitting that weeps at the threads, an O-ring that is pinched or missing, and tubing that is not fully seated produce different fixes. Replace a damaged seal, fitting, plug, or tube. Do not overtighten in an attempt to stop a leak: it can distort an O-ring, damage threads, or crack an acrylic terminal.

Corsair’s XG3 instructions specifically say to tighten its fittings by hand and not with pliers. That instruction applies to the XG3; use the torque and fitting guidance for your own block and loop.

Do not open a sealed block casually

A leak at a block seam or inside a sealed assembly may require manufacturer service or replacement. Watercool states that opening its block is at the user’s risk and that it does not warrant leak tightness after the block has been opened. Corsair also discourages disassembling Hydro X components. Check the exact warranty terms before removing a cover or cold plate.

Run a proper pump-only leak test

A leak test is separate from normal computer operation. The pump may run, but the motherboard, graphics card, storage, and other PC components must remain unpowered.

  1. Disconnect the 24-pin ATX connector and other PC power connections as directed by the PSU, pump, and reservoir manuals.
  2. Use a compatible 24-pin PSU jumper, or the jumper supplied with the pump or reservoir, only as described by those manuals.
  3. Fill the reservoir enough to keep its inlet covered while the pump is running. Never allow the reservoir to run dry; insufficient coolant can introduce air, reduce pump performance, or damage the pump.
  4. Start the pump and watch every fitting, plug, tube end, and block port. Stop the pump if the reservoir level falls toward the inlet or if a leak appears.
  5. Top up coolant as trapped air leaves the loop. Keep observing for dampness rather than assuming a joint is safe because it did not leak immediately.

Corsair’s XG3 GPU water-block guide recommends at least 24 hours of leak testing. Its XD7 pump/reservoir instructions describe about 24 hours of pump operation to clear trapped air and check for leaks. These are product-specific instructions, not a universal requirement for every loop. Follow the duration and coolant guidance for your exact hardware.

If the GPU water block runs hot

If the GPU temperature rises abnormally immediately after installation, stop the workload and investigate before extended gaming, rendering, or benchmarking. Work through the checks below in order; a wrong block or wrong port routing can make every later adjustment ineffective.

1. Confirm the exact block and PCB compatibility

Match the block’s current compatibility list to the complete graphics-card model and PCB, not merely the GPU chipset name. Board layouts, power stages, memory locations, screw positions, and component heights can differ between cards using the same chipset. Confirm the revision or manufacturer-specific PCB listed by the block maker before remounting anything.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the installed hardware against the assembly instructions. A block that physically fits the GPU core can still miss memory or voltage-regulator components, leave a pad misaligned, or prevent the cold plate from sitting flat.

2. Verify inlet and outlet direction

Follow the port diagram for the exact block. Ports are not automatically interchangeable. Corsair documents that using one XG5 port as both inlet and outlet lets coolant bypass the water block, so the coolant does not pass through the intended microchannels. Watercool’s HEATKILLER IV VGA RX Vega 56 and 64 manual identifies a specific inlet port for that model.

Do not generalize either instruction to every GPU block. Trace the tubing from the pump or radiator to the designated inlet, then from the outlet to the next loop component. Correct a crossed or bypassed route before changing fan curves or software settings.

3. Confirm coolant level and pump operation

Check that the reservoir remains filled while priming, the pump is receiving power, and its impeller is turning. Listen for a pump that is silent, intermittently stopping, or running with a grinding or rattling sound. Verify the pump’s power and control connection against its manual rather than assuming a motherboard header is configured correctly.

Persistent bubbles, a vortex that exposes the pump inlet, or visibly weak flow can indicate low coolant, trapped air, a closed valve, a blocked filter, a kinked tube, or an incorrectly routed loop. NVIDIA’s GeForce liquid-cooling guide emphasizes that adding the correct amount of water is critical. Never operate a pump dry while trying to purge air.

4. Remove trapped air and check for restrictions

With PC components still safe to power only as permitted by your filling procedure, run the pump in short intervals and gently reposition the case if the component manuals allow it. Watch the reservoir level and refill it before air reaches the pump. Check tubing for sharp bends and confirm that valves and quick-disconnects are open.

If flow remains weak after the loop is full and air has been cleared, inspect for a crushed tube, clogged filter, blocked radiator, or foreign material in the loop. Do not open a sealed block to inspect its internals unless the manufacturer explicitly authorizes that service.

5. Check GPU-to-block contact and thermal interface

Heat that appeared directly after installation often points to mounting or contact. Power down, drain the loop as necessary, and compare the assembly with the block manual.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Confirm the correct screws, springs, washers, and standoffs are in the specified positions.
  • Verify that thermal pads have the specified thickness and cover the memory and power components without lifting the cold plate away from the GPU die.
  • Check that the protective film was removed from the cold plate.
  • Inspect the thermal paste spread and make sure the GPU die is centered on the cold plate.
  • Look for a bent board, an incorrectly seated backplate, or a surrounding component that prevents flat contact.

Do not keep tightening screws beyond the manual’s sequence and limit. Uneven pressure can worsen contact or damage the PCB.

6. Check temperature as soon as the system starts

Watercool’s HEATKILLER IV manual says to check the GPU temperature immediately after startup once the cooler has been inspected. Apply the same cautious principle to any newly installed block: watch the reading at idle, then stop if it rises rapidly or abnormally before starting a sustained load.

Record whether the software reports GPU core, hotspot, or memory temperature. Those sensors measure different locations and cannot be compared as if they were the same value.

Separate a hot GPU from a hot loop

If the loop has a coolant-temperature probe, compare coolant and GPU readings under a repeatable workload. A GPU that is hot while coolant remains relatively cool points toward contact, mounting, paste, pads, compatibility, or sensor interpretation. A GPU and coolant temperature that rise together points toward loop heat-transfer capacity, radiator airflow, pump flow, ambient temperature, or workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This comparison is diagnostic, not a universal pass/fail test. Sensor placement, calibration, flow rate, radiator size, fan control, and the exact workload all affect the result. Keep a short log containing ambient temperature, coolant temperature, GPU core/hotspot/memory readings, pump speed or status, and workload so that a remount or routing change can be evaluated against the same conditions.

Which action should you take?

Observed condition First action When replacement or service is more appropriate
Moist fitting, plug, tube end, or O-ring Power off, drain, replace or reseat the damaged seal or component, then repeat a pump-only leak test. The thread, fitting body, tubing, or seal is cracked, stripped, or still wet after correct installation.
Leak at a block seam or cracked terminal Keep the PC unpowered and contact the block maker or service provider. Opening the block would void or limit warranty coverage, or the acrylic/metal body is damaged.
High temperature immediately after a remount Verify PCB compatibility, pad thickness, screw sequence, and cold-plate contact. The board is bent, a component is damaged, or correct mounting cannot be achieved.
High temperature with low coolant and weak flow Restore coolant level, protect the pump from running dry, clear air, and inspect for kinks or closed valves. The pump cannot maintain flow or a restriction remains after the loop is correctly filled.
High temperature with correct flow and relatively cool coolant Recheck inlet/outlet routing and GPU-to-block contact. The block is incompatible, internally damaged, or cannot make proper contact without risky disassembly.

Warranty and service considerations

Aftermarket GPU-cooler installation can affect the graphics-card warranty. Corsair warns that installing an aftermarket GPU cooler may affect the card’s warranty and discourages disassembling Hydro X components. Watercool places responsibility for opening its block on the user and does not warrant leak tightness afterward. Before removing a factory cooler, opening a terminal, or shipping a wet card, read the exact GPU and block manufacturer’s service instructions.

Prevent a repeat failure

  • Use the block maker’s compatibility list for the exact card and PCB revision.
  • Mark or photograph the intended inlet and outlet before routing tubing.
  • Inspect every O-ring, fitting, plug, and tube end during assembly.
  • Fill the reservoir before starting the pump and never let the pump run dry.
  • Perform the manufacturer’s pump-only leak-test duration with all PC components unpowered.
  • Check GPU temperature immediately after the first startup and stop on an abnormal rise.
  • Keep records of temperatures, coolant level, pump status, and ambient conditions after maintenance.

Bottom line

A leaking GPU block requires immediate shutdown, isolation from PSU power, complete drying, and a separate pump-only leak test before the computer is used again. A hot block requires model-specific checks: exact PCB compatibility, designated inlet and outlet, coolant and pump operation, trapped air or restrictions, and flat GPU-to-cold-plate contact. Because no universal temperature limit applies to every graphics card, use the specification for your exact GPU and investigate any rapid or abnormal increase rather than relying on a generic number.
