Turn the computer off immediately. Switch off the power supply, unplug the mains cable, and let the system cool before touching the GPU power connector. A connector that is unusually hot, smells burnt, is discolored, deformed, or has melted plastic is not safe to keep using. Do not repeatedly power the PC on, reseat the plug while energized, or continue gaming to “see if it gets worse.”

Once power is disconnected, inspect the entire cable, every adapter joint, the power-supply socket, and the graphics-card socket. Replace only a damaged cable with one supplied with or explicitly approved for the exact PSU model. A damaged GPU socket, recurring heat, or any warning that returns requires manufacturer service rather than a home repair.

What to do first when the connector is hot

  1. Shut down the operating system normally if it is responsive. If the computer is unstable, hold its power button only long enough to turn it off.
  2. Turn the PSU switch to off. This removes power from the system’s internal rails.
  3. Unplug the mains power cable from the wall or surge protector. ASUS’s troubleshooting instruction dated June 4, 2025, begins with powering off and unplugging for safety; the ASUS ROG guidance edited August 3, 2026, gives the same basic direction.
  4. Wait for the connector and surrounding plastic to cool. Do not pull on a hot plug or use tools to pry it out.
  5. Do not reuse anything that is visibly damaged or smells unusual. The current ASUS ROG guidance specifically says not to continue using a cable or adapter with visible damage or an unusual smell.

If there is smoke, an active burning smell, or signs that the PSU itself is overheating, disconnect power if you can do so safely and leave the system unplugged. Do not open the PSU enclosure; capacitors inside can retain hazardous voltage.

Why a GPU connector can overheat

A high-current connector becomes hot when electrical resistance at the contact point rises. Inadequate contact between a plug terminal and the GPU socket can concentrate heat in a small area. Seasonic’s cable guidance identifies inadequate contact between a 12VHPWR plug and the graphics-card socket as a mechanism that increases resistance and heat.

In its RTX 4090 connector update dated November 18, 2022, NVIDIA said its findings suggested that “a common issue is that connectors are not fully plugged into the graphics card.” That was a finding from the cases known at that time, not proof that every failure is caused by user installation. A connector can heat for more than one reason, including a damaged terminal, a deformed housing, an adapter problem, cable strain, or a fault in the GPU or power supply.

Heat by itself is not a precise temperature measurement. A plug may feel warm during heavy load, but a sharp temperature increase, discoloration, softened plastic, odor, or repeated warnings is abnormal. Treat those signs as a stop-use condition rather than trying to establish a safe temperature by touch.

How to inspect the cable and GPU safely

Perform this inspection only after the PC is shut down, the PSU switch is off, and the mains cable is unplugged. Use a bright light. Do not scrape terminals, bend pins back, or insert a probe into the connector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect the connector and adapter

  • Look for brown, black, gray, or whitish discoloration on the plug housing and the GPU socket.
  • Check for softened, bubbled, cracked, melted, or misshapen plastic.
  • Examine every metal terminal you can see for scorching, pitting, pushed-back contacts, or uneven height.
  • Inspect the cable insulation for cuts, glossy heat damage, flattening, or a section that has become unusually stiff.
  • Check every adapter junction. A multi-plug adapter must have all of its required inputs fully connected; a partly inserted input can create a high-resistance contact.
  • Smell the connector and cable from a short distance. A persistent burnt or acrid odor is a reason to stop, even if the plastic looks normal.

Inspect both equipment ends

Follow the cable back to the PSU. Check the PSU-side modular plug, the socket around it, and the cable’s entire route. Modular connectors that look similar are not automatically wired the same way. A cable from another PSU, even from the same manufacturer, can damage hardware if its pinout is different.

At the graphics card, inspect the socket itself. Damaged, broken, bent, discolored, or melted pins are not a cable-only problem. Do not attempt to straighten contacts or rebuild the socket based on this procedure. Photograph the condition for the card maker’s support team and keep the card unplugged.

If nothing looks damaged: reseat only under the manufacturer’s instructions

A clean visual inspection does not prove that the connector is safe. Proceed only if the GPU and PSU manufacturers’ current instructions allow a reconnection check and there is no odor, deformation, discoloration, or heat damage.

  1. Verify that the cable is the one supplied with the PSU or explicitly approved for that exact PSU model. Confirm the model number, not merely the brand or connector shape.
  2. Verify the GPU-side plug and every adapter input. Each required terminal must be inserted fully.
  3. Push the GPU plug straight into the socket until it is completely seated and flush. There should be no visible gap between the connector housing and the socket.
  4. Do not rely only on hearing a latch click. The ASUS ROG guidance edited August 3, 2026, warns that an audible click alone is not sufficient confirmation.
  5. Check the PSU-side plug is fully inserted as well. A loose modular connection can produce the same resistance and heat problem.
  6. Route the cable without sideways pull. Leave enough clearance that the case side panel does not press on the plug, and avoid a sharp fold immediately next to the connector.
  7. Only after all checks are complete should you close the case and perform a controlled power-up. Stop immediately if the smell, warning, unusual heat, or visible deformation returns.

Do not perform repeated load tests to prove that a questionable connector is acceptable. A connector can deteriorate under current before damage is obvious, and each additional test can worsen a marginal contact.

Choosing a replacement cable or adapter

A replacement is appropriate only when the cable or adapter is damaged and the GPU socket and PSU socket are undamaged. It is not a remedy for a melted graphics-card socket. Confirm compatibility with the exact PSU model before installation.

Option When it may be appropriate Checks required Important limitation
Original adapter supplied with the GPU The adapter is undamaged and the GPU maker’s instructions permit its use. Every adapter input connected; GPU plug fully seated; no gap or cable strain. An adapter with heat damage, odor, or deformation must not be reused.
Native high-current cable supplied with the PSU The cable is explicitly supplied for the installed PSU model and the GPU connection is supported. Exact PSU model and pinout confirmed; PSU-side and GPU-side plugs fully inserted. A cable that fits physically can still be electrically incompatible.
Third-party replacement Only when the PSU maker explicitly approves it for the exact PSU model. Written model-specific compatibility, correct connector type, and undamaged parts. “Universal” or same-brand claims are not enough without exact-model approval.

GIGABYTE’s 2022 FAQ advised using the adapter included with the graphics card and said aftermarket designs had not been officially tested by NVIDIA or GIGABYTE at that time. ASUS’s later guidance permits native cables supplied with, or explicitly approved for, the exact PSU model. These statements are model- and date-specific; neither is blanket approval for every GPU, PSU, or aftermarket cable.

When the GPU socket or cable is damaged

Stop using the computer if you find any melted plastic, exposed conductor, scorched terminal, deformed connector, or damaged GPU socket. Bag the cable and adapter without plugging them into another system. Keep the graphics card, PSU, purchase information, and photographs available for support.

Contact the correct manufacturer

  • GPU maker: Contact the card manufacturer when the graphics-card socket or its pins are damaged, or when the card continues to warn after an approved cable check.
  • PSU maker: Contact the PSU manufacturer when the modular socket, PSU-side plug, or supplied cable shows heat damage.
  • System builder: If the PC is prebuilt and still covered by its service agreement, use the builder’s support channel rather than mixing replacement parts yourself.

Describe exactly what happened: the connector location, whether the system was under load, any smell or discoloration, the PSU and GPU model numbers, and whether an adapter was used. Do not promise yourself that a warranty will cover the event. Coverage varies by model, region, date, and the maker’s inspection.

Historical RTX 4090 support statement

NVIDIA reported about 50 RTX 4090 connector cases globally in its November 18, 2022 update. In that dated statement, NVIDIA said it and its partners were committed to an expedited RMA process “regardless of the cable or card used.” That was a model-specific response at that time, not a current failure-rate estimate or a universal warranty promise. Ask the relevant manufacturer what policy applies to your exact product today.

Preventing a recurrence after service or replacement

  • Use only the cable supplied with the PSU or one the PSU maker explicitly approves for that model.
  • Seat the connector flush and inspect for a gap; do not treat the latch sound as the only test.
  • Keep the first section of cable straight enough that the plug is not pulled sideways.
  • Leave clearance for the case panel. If the panel touches or bows the cable, reroute it before powering on.
  • Avoid sharp bends or force close to the connector. Seasonic’s product-specific cable guidance calls for natural clearance and warns against bending or applying force near the plug.
  • During the first few sessions after a replacement, shut down and inspect if you notice odor, visible discoloration, a warning, or an abnormal change in connector temperature.

Good routing reduces mechanical stress, but it cannot compensate for a damaged terminal, an incorrect modular cable, or a damaged socket. Prevention starts with compatible parts and complete seating.

What not to do

  • Do not keep using a connector that is melted, deformed, discolored, or producing an unusual smell.
  • Do not power the PC while holding the plug, pressing the case panel against it, or repeatedly moving it to find a position that works.
  • Do not swap in a cable from another modular PSU because the connector appears identical.
  • Do not cut, splice, solder, or reshape a high-current GPU cable as a home repair.
  • Do not assume a new cable fixes a burned GPU socket.
  • Do not treat a historical manufacturer statement as proof of present-day warranty coverage.

Decision checklist

Finding after unplugging power Next action
Melted plastic, scorch marks, exposed conductor, or burnt odor Do not reuse the cable or adapter. Contact the GPU or PSU maker as appropriate.
GPU socket pins or housing damaged Leave the card unplugged and request manufacturer service.
No visible damage, but the plug was not fully seated or the cable was strained Reconnect only if the makers’ instructions permit it, using an exact-compatible cable and careful routing.
Warning or abnormal heat returns after an approved check Power down and escalate to manufacturer support; do not continue testing.
No damage and no recurrence Keep the cable fully seated, strain-free, and periodically inspect it after heavy-use sessions.
