If a game you bought does not match the reviews that influenced you, act quickly: document the specific mismatch, check the refund rules for the store that actually charged you, and submit an honest refund request while you may still qualify. A review is not a guarantee of a particular experience, so describe what was promised, what you received, and whether the problem is a missing feature, a technical failure, or a subjective disappointment.
Refund approval is never automatic. Store policy, purchase timing, download or play activity, your country, and the seller named on your receipt all matter. Local consumer law may provide rights beyond a platform’s voluntary policy, particularly when digital content is faulty or materially different from its description.
First, identify who sold the game
Start with the receipt, not the review site. The company that processed the transaction normally controls the first refund decision. A key purchased from a third-party retailer is generally handled by that retailer, not by Steam, PlayStation Store, or Microsoft. Likewise, a console purchase made through a console store follows that store’s regional terms, even if the game is also available elsewhere.

- Record the seller or storefront name shown on your receipt.
- Save the order number, purchase date, amount, currency, and account used.
- Note your country or store region; the same platform can publish different terms for different regions.
- Do not assume that installing, streaming, or launching the game has no effect on eligibility.
Preserve evidence before you request anything
Make a short evidence file while the details are fresh. Keep the receipt, the store listing or product description, the review or reviews that shaped your purchase, screenshots or recordings of the problem, and the game’s version number. If an update changed the experience, record the update date and version rather than describing the game only by its launch reputation.

Describe the mismatch precisely
Replace statements such as “the game is bad” with a verifiable description:
- An advertised mode, feature, language, accessibility option, or content type is absent.
- The game will not start, crashes, or performs so poorly on your supported system that it cannot be used as represented.
- The store description says one thing, but the currently installed version does another.
- A review discussed a feature or performance level that is not present in your version, platform, or region.
Include what you expected, the exact evidence for that expectation, what happened instead, and how many times you reproduced it. Do not claim that every difference between a reviewer’s experience and yours is a defect; the comparison is useful because it gives the seller concrete facts to assess.
Check the applicable refund policy
These are the commonly stated conditions in the platform policies cited below. They are policy rules, not promises of approval, and they can change. Open the current policy for your store region before submitting a request.

Platform-specific request steps
Steam
- Open Steam Support and sign in to the account that made the purchase.
- Select the game from your purchase history.
- Choose the refund option and provide the requested reason.
- Explain the concrete mismatch and attach or reference your saved evidence where the form permits it.
- Submit promptly. Steam’s general rule is 14 days and under two hours of play, but Valve states that you may still ask outside those rules and it will review the request.
Valve’s policy expresses that discretion directly: “There are more details below, but even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can ask for a refund anyway and we’ll take a look.” Treat that as an invitation to request review, not as an entitlement.

PlayStation Store
For a US account, open Transaction History, choose the eligible purchase, select Request Refund, and complete the prompts. The standard digital-content checklist is a request within 14 days and no download or stream having started, unless the content is faulty. For a UK account, read the UK cancellation terms separately: starting a download or stream normally ends the cancellation option unless the content is faulty. The store region attached to your account determines which instructions and conditions apply.
PlayStation’s US support wording states: “In addition to the below, you may have additional rights under applicable local law, such as if your content is faulty.” If the game is defective or materially differs from its description, state those facts and consult the consumer rules that apply where you bought it.
Xbox or Microsoft Store
- Open your Xbox order history while signed in to the purchasing account.
- Select the game or app.
- Choose Request a refund.
- Provide a factual reason, including the feature, description, or technical problem at issue.
- Submit the request and retain the confirmation.
Microsoft says digital goods are generally not returnable unless the offer or applicable law provides eligibility. Therefore, filing the form is a request for a decision, not evidence that the refund has been granted.
Investigate why the review and your copy differ
A careful comparison makes your request clearer and can reveal a fix that is faster than a refund. It also prevents you from relying on an outdated or mismatched review.

Compare dates and versions
Write down the review’s publication date, the game’s version tested by the reviewer if stated, and the version installed on your system. Patches can add, remove, rebalance, or disable features. A launch review may not describe a later build, while a current review may reflect fixes unavailable when you purchased.
Match platform and hardware
Check whether the review covered PC, a particular console generation, or a different operating-system build. On PC, compare the reviewer’s graphics settings and hardware with yours when those details are available. A performance result on one configuration is not a guarantee for another. On a console, check whether the review used a different generation, performance mode, or display setting.
Separate content expectations from technical faults
Identify the single issue that matters most. Is a promised mode missing, or do you simply dislike how it plays? Does the game fail to launch, or does it run at a lower frame rate than a reviewer achieved? Does the listing describe online functionality that is unavailable in your region? These distinctions help the seller decide whether the issue is a policy-eligible fault, a description problem, or a normal difference in taste.

Read the game’s in-product update notes and the seller’s status information. A temporary server outage, an update that is still installing, or a compatibility patch may explain the discrepancy. Save the relevant notice and date. Do not delay a time-limited refund request indefinitely while waiting for a possible fix; you can report the problem and request a decision at the same time.

What to write in the request
Keep the explanation short enough for a support form but specific enough to verify. This structure works:
- Transaction: give the purchase date, order number, store region, and platform.
- Expectation: quote or accurately paraphrase the store description or identify the review claim that influenced you.
- Observed result: state the version, hardware or console, steps that produced the problem, and the outcome.
- Impact: explain whether the game is unusable, a material feature is absent, or the experience is materially different from the description.
- Request: ask for a refund under the seller’s policy and note any relevant fault or local-law concern without asserting a legal conclusion you cannot establish.
Use neutral language. Do not exaggerate playtime, hide a download, or claim that a reviewer promised a result. Inaccurate details can undermine an otherwise legitimate request.

Stronger factual basis
- The game cannot run on the supported platform or repeatedly crashes before usable play.
- A clearly advertised feature or content type is missing from the purchased edition.
- The product description is materially inconsistent with the delivered content.
- The platform’s stated timing and download or play conditions are satisfied.
Weaker factual basis
- You dislike the genre, pacing, difficulty, art direction, or story after trying it.
- A reviewer’s preferences or hardware produced a different subjective experience.
- You bought from a third party but submitted the request to the platform that hosts the game.
- You waited beyond the stated window and cannot identify a fault or description problem.
A weaker basis does not prevent you from asking, particularly where a platform says it will consider out-of-policy requests, but it does mean approval is less predictable.

Read the reason before appealing. If the decision appears to rely on a wrong purchase date, account, region, playtime, or download status, reply with the relevant receipt and account details. If the seller points to a third-party transaction, contact the merchant named on your receipt instead.

For a suspected defect or misleading description, ask the seller which fault-reporting or statutory process applies in your region. Keep support case numbers and responses. A platform’s voluntary refund policy is not necessarily the full extent of consumer protection, but the outcome depends on your location, the contract, the condition of the content, and the facts of the transaction. A local consumer authority or qualified adviser can explain the route available to you; do not assume that another country’s 14-day rule applies to your purchase.
After approval or while waiting
Follow the seller’s instructions about uninstalling, license removal, or payment reversal. Do not continue accumulating playtime while a request is pending if the platform’s policy measures usage. Keep the game version and evidence unchanged until support has enough information, but install a required correction if support specifically asks you to test one. If the refund is approved, check the original payment method and the expected processing period shown by the seller rather than assuming the money appears instantly.
The practical goal is a fair, documented decision: identify the seller, preserve the transaction and product evidence, explain the mismatch in terms that can be checked, and use the policy and legal process for your own store region. That approach gives a legitimate refund request its best chance without treating a review as a warranty.
