If a foldable iPhone’s inside screen stops accepting touch, stop pressing and folding it repeatedly. Remove anything covering the panel, check for moisture or debris, and perform Apple’s force-restart sequence: press and quickly release volume up, press and quickly release volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. Apple notes that the side-button hold can take longer than 10 seconds.
Apple’s published support instructions are for iPhone generally, not for a confirmed retail foldable-iPhone model. Verify the exact device before using model-specific repair instructions. If the inner display remains dead after a force restart, treat the problem as a possible display, touch-layer, hinge-flex, connector, or logic-board fault and arrange a qualified diagnosis rather than continuing home tests.
First verify what device you have
There is an important qualification before any troubleshooting: Apple’s cited support material does not describe a foldable-iPhone inner display, and it does not confirm a retail foldable iPhone model. The steps below are therefore a safe response to the scenario, not a foldable-specific Apple procedure. Find the exact model in Settings > General > About if the phone can still be navigated, or record the model information from the purchase documentation, packaging, or service records.
Do not assume that instructions for a conventional iPhone, another manufacturer’s foldable phone, or a different generation apply to the device in your hand. Display construction, hinge routing, opening angles, water resistance, and available repair manuals can differ substantially. Give the exact model and symptoms to any technician.

Make the phone safe before testing it
Before attempting a restart, remove variables that can block touch input or cause further damage.
- Take off the case, especially one that presses against the hinge or inner bezel.
- Remove a screen film or protector from the inner panel if it is lifting, cracked, bubbling, or trapping debris. Do not pry at a bonded display.
- Disconnect chargers, USB accessories, docks, and other attached hardware.
- With the phone unfolded and powered off if possible, gently remove visible dust or liquid from the screen and hinge area using a clean, dry, non-abrasive cloth.
- Do not press hard on the panel, scrape it, apply heat, or repeatedly fold and unfold the phone to see whether touch returns.
Stop using the device immediately if it is hot, swollen, wet, cracked in a way that exposes internal parts, or making unusual sounds. Those signs can indicate a battery or internal hardware hazard; continued testing can worsen damage. Keep it away from charging sources and seek service.
Try Apple’s force restart once
A force restart is the first software test when the phone appears powered on but the inner touch surface does nothing. It does not erase personal data. Perform the sequence exactly and in quick succession:

- Press and quickly release the volume-up button.
- Press and quickly release the volume-down button.
- Press and hold the side button. Keep holding it until the Apple logo appears; Apple says this can take longer than 10 seconds.
Release the side button when the logo appears and wait for the operating system to finish starting. Do not repeatedly interrupt the sequence or keep folding the phone during startup. If the inner display is the only nonresponsive part, note whether the outer display, physical buttons, sounds, vibration, and charging behavior continue to work. Those observations help a technician distinguish a complete power failure from an inner-screen fault.

If touch returns after the restart
Use the phone gently and make a backup before doing anything else. A temporary software or connection problem can recur, and a later repair may require erasing the device.
Install any available iOS update
Apple says an iOS update may fix an issue. On a usable phone, open Settings > General > Software Update and install an offered update while connected to reliable power and Wi-Fi. Keep the device flat or in the position recommended for the exact model during the update; do not manipulate the hinge until the installation is complete.
Back up before the problem returns
Back up to iCloud or to a computer as soon as the phone can be controlled. Allow iCloud syncing to finish where possible. A computer backup can be useful when cloud storage is unavailable or the device contains data that has not synchronized recently. Confirm that the backup has completed rather than assuming that starting the process was enough.

Record what happened
Write down when the inner display failed, whether the phone was opened or closed, whether it had been dropped or exposed to liquid, and whether a case or film was installed. Note whether a force restart restored touch and whether the fault affects the whole inner panel or only an area. These details can shorten diagnosis and help establish whether the failure is intermittent.

If the inner display stays unresponsive
When a force restart does not restore touch, stop treating the symptom as a normal frozen app. A technician must diagnose the hardware. Plausible fault categories include:
- The display panel itself has failed or has sustained impact, pressure, or flex damage.
- The touch-sensitive layer, sometimes called the digitizer, is no longer reporting input.
- A flexible cable routed through or near the hinge is damaged, pinched, or disconnected.
- An internal connector has shifted or been contaminated by liquid or debris.
- A logic-board or power-management fault is preventing the inner display assembly from operating.
These are possibilities, not a remote diagnosis. A working outer screen does not prove that the inner panel is repairable with a software setting, and a black inner screen does not prove that the panel alone needs replacement. Avoid pressing the center of the display, forcing the hinge through resistance, or repeating the restart dozens of times.
Protect your data before handing over the phone
Apple’s service-preparation guidance warns that a device might be erased during service. Make an iCloud or computer backup first whenever the phone is usable. If the inner display prevents normal navigation, use any still-working interface only for the minimum needed to complete a backup; do not delay service indefinitely while trying to recover touch.
Before delivery, let pending iCloud synchronization finish if the connection is reliable. Check that important photos, contacts, messages, authenticator records, and files are present in the backup or have another recovery path. Remove payment cards or other sensitive items only if the exact service instructions require it, and follow Apple’s current preparation checklist for the confirmed model.

Never give an unknown person your Apple Account password or device passcode. A reputable provider should explain what access is required, how data will be protected, and whether you can enter credentials yourself at the service counter. Ask for a written intake record that describes the condition of both displays and the hinge.
Choose a repair route deliberately
The best route depends on model availability, warranty status, location, urgency, and the shop’s experience with flexible inner displays. Prices, turnaround times, warranty eligibility, and part compatibility must be quoted for the exact device; no general foldable-screen price applies to every model.

For a suspected inner-display hardware failure, Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider service is the best-supported option when available. Apple states that Apple-certified repairs use genuine parts. Non-authorized repair can be appropriate where authorized service is unavailable, but obtain the shop’s terms in writing and understand the possible effect on Apple coverage.

Use the following checklist before approving work:
- Can you service this exact model and its inner display, not just standard rigid iPhones?
- Will the diagnosis separate a panel failure from a hinge-flex, connector, or logic-board fault?
- Are the replacement parts genuine Apple parts, compatible parts, refurbished assemblies, or an unspecified source?
- What is the total quoted cost, including diagnosis, labor, taxes, seals, and any required calibration?
- What written warranty covers the replacement and how long does it last?
- Could the phone be erased, and how will my data and passcode be handled?
- Will the repair preserve any remaining Apple Limited Warranty or AppleCare eligibility?
- What tests will be performed after repair on both displays, touch input, the hinge, cameras, speakers, charging, and biometric functions?
Do not approve an expensive display replacement based only on a visual inspection. Request the fault explanation and the proposed remedy in writing. If the estimate changes after opening the device, require approval before additional work.

When self-repair is appropriate—and when it is not
Apple’s iPhone repair manuals include display and Multi-Touch troubleshooting and self-service diagnostics for supported models. Apple published an iPhone 17 Repair Manual on October 2, 2025. Those resources do not establish that a foldable iPhone is covered. Use a manual only after confirming that its model identifier matches your device and that the instructions describe the same display and hinge construction.
Do not open the phone merely because the inner screen is blank. Foldable assemblies contain fragile layers and tightly routed flex cables; an attempt to separate them without the correct tools can turn a repairable connector problem into a destroyed display. Self-repair also introduces battery, adhesive, sealing, and calibration risks. If you lack the exact manual and suitable experience, professional service is safer.
Common mistakes that make the failure worse
- Applying firm pressure to “wake” a dead touch layer.
- Folding and unfolding the device repeatedly to reproduce an intermittent fault.
- Charging a phone that is wet, swollen, unusually hot, or making sounds.
- Using a cleaning liquid, metal tool, hair dryer, or suction device on the inner panel or hinge.
- Restoring or resetting the phone before creating a backup.
- Assuming a compatible-looking replacement part has the same calibration or sealing requirements as an original assembly.
- Giving a service provider your Apple Account password instead of entering credentials yourself when required.
A practical decision path
- Verify the model. Record the exact identifier and check whether the available Apple documentation actually covers it.
- Check for immediate hazards. If the phone is hot, swollen, wet, cracked open, or making unusual sounds, stop and arrange service.
- Remove external causes. Take off the case and film, disconnect accessories, and clear moisture or debris without pressing the panel.
- Force-restart once. Use volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears, even if that takes more than 10 seconds.
- Back up promptly if touch returns. Let iCloud finish syncing or complete a computer backup.
- Escalate persistent failure. Obtain a diagnosis from Apple or a qualified provider experienced with the exact foldable display.
- Approve work only after written terms. Confirm parts, cost, warranty, data handling, coverage impact, and post-repair tests.
The key dividing line is simple: a force restart can rule out a transient software freeze, but it cannot repair a failed flexible display assembly or hinge connection. Persistent nonresponse warrants diagnosis, not more pressure, folding, or improvised repair.
