Stop forcing the module. A replacement that will not slide into the controller’s grooves, or one that fits but produces drift, may be incorrectly oriented, poorly seated, defective, or involved in a controller fault. Neither symptom proves that the part is counterfeit. Sony’s published instructions explain correct installation and general troubleshooting, but they do not provide a packaging, markings, appearance, or seller test that authenticates a third-party module.
Turn off the DualSense Edge, disconnect USB, remove and reinstall the module using the grooves and release lever, then reset the controller and update the PS5 and controller software if drift remains. If the module still will not fit, or drift continues after those checks, stop using force and pursue the seller’s return or exchange process or PlayStation Repairs.
A bad fit or drift does not establish that the module is fake
The title describes a common suspicion, but the available Sony guidance supports a narrower conclusion: fit trouble and stick drift are symptoms, not counterfeit proof. An incorrectly aligned genuine module can resist installation, and a replacement that is not seated correctly can behave abnormally. A faulty module or a problem elsewhere in the controller can produce the same result.

Do not treat a tight fit, a loose fit, drift, or a marketplace listing alone as a determination that an item is counterfeit.

Handle the module as a hardware problem first. Document the listing, seller, packaging, and symptoms while you still have them, but do not modify the part in an attempt to make it fit.
Confirm that the replacement is the right type
The official replacement is sold as the “Stick Module for DualSense Edge Wireless Controller.” The US product page says it is for the DualSense Edge only; the UK product page identifies the module as model CFI-ZSM1. Regional product descriptions can differ, so use the page for your market when checking the product identity.

The exact search wording supported by Sony’s product listing is Sony DualSense Edge stick module replacement. A search result is not proof that a particular listing is genuine or compatible. Check the seller, return window, product condition, and explicit DualSense Edge compatibility before buying.

Install the module without damaging the controller
Use this sequence whenever a module is new, has been removed, or seems to sit incorrectly. Sony’s replacement instructions are the controlling reference for the latch, lever, grooves, and cover.
- Power the controller off. If the player indicator is lit, hold the PS button until it turns off. Disconnect the USB cable from the controller.
- Discharge static before handling. Touch a nearby grounded metal object. Avoid touching the electrical connectors on the module or inside the controller. Sony’s instruction manual specifically cautions against contact with those connectors; the precaution reduces the chance of static damage.
- Release the front cover. Slide the rear RELEASE latch and remove the front cover. Set it aside where its raised alignment parts will not be damaged.
- Open the module lock. Raise the module’s release lever. Do not try to pull the module out while the lever is locked.
- Align and slide the replacement. Check the module’s orientation, place it against the controller’s grooves, and slide it along those grooves until it clicks. Sony’s instruction reads: “Make sure that the stick module is positioned correctly, and then slide the module along the grooves of the controller until you hear a click.”
- Lock the module and replace the cover. Lower the release lever. Align the cover’s raised parts with the notches on the controller, then press carefully until the cover clicks into place.
The click is the completion signal for both the module and the cover. If the part does not align with the grooves, stop and remove it rather than increasing pressure. A module that requires force is not installed correctly, regardless of whether the part is genuine.
If the module will not fit
Recheck orientation and the release lever
Remove the module and look at how its guide surfaces meet the controller grooves. Reopen the release lever, align the module squarely, and start the slide again. Do not angle the module into the opening or press down on one side while pushing the other. The official procedure is a straight slide along the grooves, followed by a click.

Separate module resistance from cover resistance
Test the module before replacing the front cover. If the module slides and clicks but the cover does not, the issue is the cover’s raised parts and the controller’s notches, not the module seating step. Remove the cover, realign those parts, and press gently. A cover that will not align should also not be forced.

Stop when the shape does not match
If the guide surfaces, connector area, or outer shape do not correspond to the controller opening, stop the installation. Do not file, sand, bend, lubricate, or otherwise modify the module or controller. Modification can destroy evidence needed for a return and can create a genuine hardware fault that support cannot diagnose.
Preserve evidence and use the return route
Keep the box, inserts, labels, receipts, order number, and seller messages. Photograph the part as received and the point where alignment fails. Ask the seller for an exchange or refund under its stated terms. Describe the symptom precisely—“will not slide along the controller grooves” is more useful than simply calling it fake. If the seller cannot resolve a persistent fit problem, contact PlayStation Support and provide the controller model, purchase details, and the steps you followed.
If the module fits but the stick drifts
Drift means the on-screen character or camera moves when you are not intentionally moving the stick. A newly installed module can expose a seating problem, a defective module, or a broader controller issue. The symptom alone cannot identify which one applies to your unit.
1. Verify seating before software troubleshooting
Turn the controller off and disconnect USB again. Remove the cover, raise the release lever, and reseat the module along the grooves until it clicks. Lower the lever and refit the cover against its notches. Do not repeatedly operate the stick while the module is partly engaged, and do not touch the connectors.

2. Reset the controller
Sony lists a controller reset as an initial troubleshooting step. Follow the reset procedure in PlayStation’s Controllers Support guidance for the DualSense Edge. A reset is a diagnostic step; it does not authenticate the module or prove that a mechanical fault has been repaired.
3. Update both sides of the connection
Make sure the PS5 system software and the DualSense Edge controller software are up to date. Use the update instructions in PlayStation’s support materials rather than relying on an unverified third-party utility. Test the controller again only after the update has completed and the controller has reconnected normally.
4. Escalate continuing drift
If the stick still moves by itself after correct seating, a reset, and current software, select the controller or stick-module problem in PlayStation Support and Repairs. Tell support whether drift occurs immediately at the home screen or only in a particular game, whether it affects one stick or both, and whether it began only after the replacement was installed. Those details help distinguish a controller-level symptom from a game setting.
Do not open the module, spray cleaner into the controller, or attempt an electrical repair while a return or warranty claim is possible. Such actions can create additional damage and complicate service eligibility.

Use the symptom to choose the next action

What is—and is not—established about authenticity
Sony’s documentation establishes the official installation method, DualSense Edge compatibility, interchangeability of official left and right modules, and the recommended reset, update, and repair path. It does not establish a visual counterfeit test for third-party modules. There is no published failure percentage or counterfeit rate in the cited support material, so a seller’s claim about rarity or a supposed “known drift percentage” should not be presented as a Sony statistic.
Authenticity and compatibility are separate questions. A genuine module can be sold by an unauthorized seller, while a third-party module can be honestly described as third-party without being counterfeit. Ask the seller which of those claims it is making, and keep the wording of the listing if you need to dispute the transaction.
When to return, replace, or repair
Return or exchange the module
Use this route when the part never aligns, arrives damaged, is materially different from the listing, or produces persistent drift immediately after correct installation and basic troubleshooting. Keep the controller unmodified and include the packaging and order documentation.

Use Sony’s support path when the module and cover fit correctly but the controller continues to malfunction after reset and software updates, or when you cannot determine whether the fault is in the module or the controller. Start at Controllers Support.
Use a repair service
If PlayStation directs you to repair, follow its instructions for the region where the controller was purchased. Sony also describes repair options for devices with physical or cosmetic damage at Sony’s repair-options page. Service eligibility, charges, and shipping rules depend on the device, country, and damage condition; confirm those terms before sending hardware.
Practical checklist before you close the case
- The controller was switched off and USB was disconnected before handling.
- You discharged static and avoided the module and controller connectors.
- The release lever was raised for removal and installation, then lowered after the click.
- The module was aligned with the grooves and never forced.
- The front cover’s raised parts matched the controller notches.
- You recorded whether the problem was fit, cover alignment, drift, or more than one symptom.
- You retained packaging, order details, photos, and seller correspondence.
- You reset the controller and updated PS5 and Edge software before requesting repair for continuing drift.
Following those checks gives you a safe installation result and a clear record for a return or support claim, without making an unsupported judgment that the module is counterfeit.
