Do not click the link or interact with its page. Do not connect a wallet, sign a transaction or message, download a file, run pasted code, scan an unfamiliar QR code, or enter a password, Discord token, private key, or recovery phrase. Report the message in Discord, alert the server moderators, and then follow the response for the specific action you took.
First, stop interacting with the post
A suspicious crypto post is not proof that the entire server or every account in it has been compromised. Merely seeing or receiving a link does not establish that your device or wallet is infected. The immediate risk comes from what you do next: opening a page, entering a secret, approving a wallet request, installing software, or following instructions supplied by the page.
- Do not test the URL in a browser or paste it into a wallet.
- Do not trust a shortened or familiar-looking URL as proof that the destination is safe; shortened links can conceal the real destination. See Discord’s guidance on suspicious links and downloads at Protecting Against Scams on Discord.
- Do not download a “security” tool, run terminal or console commands, or paste code that the page provides.
- Do not scan an unfamiliar QR code or contact a support account promoted by the post.
Keep the live link out of other channels while you report it. Reposting it can give someone else an easy way to click it.

If you have not clicked
Report the message in Discord
Use the message’s report control rather than investigating the URL yourself. On desktop, open the message menu; on mobile, press and hold the message. Choose Report Message and select the most relevant policy category. Discord documents the in-app flow, moderator contact options, and message-link copying in its Safety Library.

Give moderators enough information to act
Copy the message link if you need to help a moderator locate the post, or provide the channel, sender, and approximate time. Moderators can remove the post and check whether the account or bot is one they recognize. Do not forward the active URL to another channel just to warn people.
Check claims of official support independently
If the post says it is from Discord, a wallet provider, or another service, open that service’s known app or type its known address yourself. Do not use the link in the message. Discord says official messages display an OFFICIAL badge and in-app indicators, and states: “Discord will never ask you for your password or account token.” See Discord Official Messages.
If you clicked but did not enter information
Close the page and stop following its instructions. A click by itself does not establish that an account or wallet was compromised. Do not continue to a wallet prompt, sign a message, install a file, run a command, or enter a password because a page claims that one of those steps is required to “verify” or “secure” you.

If anything did download, or if you later entered credentials, connected a wallet, signed, or supplied a secret, use the corresponding higher-risk section below. The correct response depends on that specific action, not simply on the fact that a page opened.
If you entered a Discord password or account details
- Open Discord through its official app or by entering the known address yourself. Do not use a link in a follow-up message.
- Change your Discord password and enable two-factor authentication in the account’s official security settings. Discord recommends 2FA and says it will not ask for your password or account token; its guidance is at Protecting Against Scams on Discord.
- If you reused that password on another service, change it there through that service’s official site. Treat each reused account as potentially exposed.
- Review account activity and connected applications using the official security controls. Ignore unsolicited direct messages promising to recover or protect your account.
- Report the original message and the account or bot. Discord directs users to report suspicious links and scam or phishing bots through its safety process; the reporting instructions are in the Safety Library.
If you connected a wallet
A connection is not automatically a spending approval
MetaMask explains that connecting a wallet lets a decentralized application see your public address and public blockchain information. It does not, by itself, give the site permission to move tokens. Moving assets generally requires a separate approval or transaction. Its explanation is available at Why am I being asked to connect my wallet to a dapp?.
Disconnect through the wallet’s official interface
Do not sign anything else. Open the wallet’s genuine app or extension, review connected sites, and disconnect the suspicious site. Use the wallet’s own documentation for the exact menu because labels differ between wallets and networks.

Check approvals separately
Disconnecting a site does not revoke token approvals. MetaMask distinguishes the connection from an approval that permits a dapp to move a specified token. Review approvals in the wallet’s official approval-management tools and revoke any permission you determine is malicious. See What is a token approval? and How to disconnect a wallet from a dapp.

If you signed a transaction, inspect the wallet’s official history or a reputable block explorer reached independently, not through the suspicious page. Record the transaction identifier, destination address, network, and time. If funds moved, contact the wallet provider or exchange through its official support route and report the loss to the appropriate authority. MetaMask states that it cannot reverse transactions or restore missing funds; its compromised-account guidance is at I’ve been hacked or scammed.
If you gave away a recovery phrase or private key
Assume the wallet and every account derived from that phrase or key are compromised. Never share the secret again, even with someone claiming to be wallet support. Anyone who has it can recreate the wallet and sign transactions without your permission.

- Create a new wallet in a separate browser profile or on another device, following the official documentation for the wallet you actually use.
- If it is safe to do so, move remaining assets to the new wallet. Prioritize the network and assets at risk, and do not use the exposed account for new deposits.
- Stop using accounts derived from the exposed phrase. Do not “test” them by sending more funds.
- Preserve transaction identifiers, wallet addresses, screenshots, and the Discord message link for reports. Never include the phrase, private key, password, or authentication code in evidence.
Wallet interfaces and recovery procedures vary. MetaMask’s guidance notes the continuing risk to a compromised wallet and that it cannot recover missing funds. Do not pay a stranger or a supposed recovery company promising guaranteed recovery; no universal legitimate recovery service is established for this situation.

Start with Discord
Submit the in-app message report and notify a server moderator. Include the message link or identifying details, but do not repost the live link. Save screenshots before the post disappears if they can be obtained without opening it.
Report cryptocurrency fraud
In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission accepts reports about cryptocurrency fraud and suspicious activity at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you are elsewhere, use the relevant national consumer-protection or law-enforcement channel. A wallet provider, exchange, or payment service should be contacted through its official support route as well.

Preserve useful evidence safely
- Discord message and channel links, sender IDs, timestamps, and screenshots.
- Wallet addresses, network names, transaction IDs, and approval details.
- Emails or notifications from the account or wallet provider.
Do not publish recovery phrases, private keys, passwords, one-time codes, or Discord authentication tokens while asking for help. The Federal Trade Commission’s phishing guidance also recommends avoiding links in suspicious messages and using a known official route instead.
Why a convincing crypto post can still be unsafe
Crypto scams often imitate airdrops, urgent security notices, giveaways, account warnings, or support conversations. A polished design, a familiar name, a shortened URL, or a message posted in a server you trust does not verify the destination. Accounts and bots can be compromised, impersonated, or newly created. The safe test is not whether the offer looks plausible; it is whether you can verify it independently in the service’s official app or help center without using the post’s link.
Discord’s Deceptive Practices Policy Explainer, identified as version August 29, 2025, describes financial scams and phishing as prohibited deceptive practices. Discord’s policy wording and reporting controls can change, so use the live in-app controls when labels differ from the examples above.
