Do not buy the movie again yet. First identify which storefront processed the payment, sign in to the exact account used for that transaction, and open that service’s purchase library rather than its subscription catalog. Then check hidden or family-shared purchases, country or billing changes, and supported devices. If the transaction is confirmed but the title still cannot be played or downloaded, contact the original storefront with your receipt and account details.
Start by proving where the purchase happened
A movie can appear in several apps without being owned by the account currently open. A title shown in a subscription catalog or channel is not necessarily a purchase. Apple specifically says subscription and channel content does not appear in its purchase list.
- Find the payment record. Search the purchase-confirmation email, receipt, bank or card statement descriptor, and each likely storefront’s order history. The company that processed the payment is the service that must restore access.
- Record the transaction details. Note the movie title, purchase date, order number, currency, country or marketplace, and the email address or account identifier shown on the receipt.
- Check the account currently active in the app. Verify the email or Apple Account before signing out. Google says purchased content follows the account used for the purchase; Apple notes that a missing item may have been bought with another Apple Account.
- Use the ownership section, not a general search result. Open the provider’s Library, Purchased, or Purchases & Rentals area. A search result can show a title that is available to rent, buy, or stream without proving that your account owns it.
Keep the receipt open while checking. Matching the order number to the account is more reliable than recognizing a poster image or remembering which app you used.

If the purchase was made through Apple
Check purchase history, hidden items, and family access
Open the Apple TV app and look in Library, then Movies. If the title is absent, review Apple purchase history. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance identifies three common explanations: a different Apple Account was used, the item is hidden, or a family member bought it through Family Sharing. Select the relevant family member when reviewing shared purchases.

A title that appears in purchase history but cannot be redownloaded is different from a title that was never recorded. Apple directs customers to report a problem when purchase history confirms the transaction but redownloading still fails. Include the order information from the receipt when you submit the report.
When the page says “Buy” even though you paid
For an iPhone or iPad running iOS or iPadOS 18.0, or an Apple Vision Pro running visionOS 2.0, Apple documents a specific workaround for a purchased movie that appears to require another purchase:
- Open the Apple TV app and select Library.
- Open the movie’s detail page.
- Select More.
- Select Play, rather than selecting the Buy button.
Apple published this guidance on March 25, 2025. The versions and device types matter; menus can differ on older systems or other hardware.

Understand streaming versus downloading
Apple’s redownload instructions vary by device. iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Windows PC support download flows for eligible purchases. Apple TV 4K, Apple TV HD, smart televisions, and other streaming devices in the cited guide stream purchased content but do not download it locally. A missing download on a television therefore does not by itself show that the purchase disappeared; check Library and start playback on that device.
If the purchase was made through Prime Video
Open Purchases & Rentals
Amazon states that movies bought or rented through Prime Video are available on PrimeVideo.com and in the Prime Video app under Purchases & Rentals. Use that section rather than the Prime subscription catalog. If the title is listed there, open its detail page and try playback from the same account that placed the order.
Investigate a country or billing change
Prime Video access can change when the account’s home billing country or Prime subscription country changes. Amazon says previous purchases and rentals may become inaccessible in some cases after such a change. This can happen after moving, changing the account’s residence, or subscribing through a different country marketplace.

Amazon distinguishes that situation from ordinary international travel. If your residence and subscription country stayed the same and you are only traveling, the country-change guidance does not automatically apply. If you moved and lost access, contact Prime Video customer service for the marketplace connected to the account. Tell support the former and current country, order date, and order number; marketplace instructions can vary by country.

Use the same Google account everywhere
Google’s instruction is straightforward: on each platform, sign in to the same account used for the purchase. A second Google account on a television, phone, or browser can make a legitimate purchase look absent.
Check the platform-specific library
- Google TV mobile app on Android: open Library.
- YouTube: open the Movies & TV or Purchased area.
- Google TV device: open Library.
- Android TV: where available, open Shop, then Your Library.
- Compatible smart-TV YouTube app: open the YouTube library and the purchased-movie section.
Google lists Google TV mobile, YouTube, Google TV devices, Android TV, and compatible smart-TV YouTube access, but the exact labels and navigation can vary by device and region. Try a second supported surface if one app does not show the title. For example, check the Google TV mobile Library and YouTube Purchased before concluding that the account has lost the transaction.

Do not rely on the old Google Play tab
Google’s help page says the legacy Google Play Movies and TV tab is US-only. Google continues movie buying and renting through Google TV and YouTube, so an absent legacy tab is not evidence that the purchase was deleted. Use the current Library or Purchased locations instead.

Movies Anywhere is a conditional option, not a universal recovery system. In the United States, eligible movies can appear in Movies Anywhere after you connect the relevant digital retailer account. Google’s guidance limits this route to eligible titles and connected accounts.

- Connect that retailer account to Movies Anywhere using the account that owns the transaction.
- Open My Movies and look for the title.
Do not assume that every movie will synchronize. Eligibility can depend on the title, retailer, and country. The Movies Anywhere help center has a specific topic for a movie missing from a collection and guidance for connecting or disconnecting a retailer; use that support route when an eligible title does not appear. Detailed refresh or reset behavior should not be assumed without checking the current help instructions.

What to do when the title is still missing
Separate an account problem from a service problem
Use the purchase record as the dividing line. If no storefront’s order history contains the transaction, recheck the receipt and the account identifier; the payment may have gone to a different retailer or account. If the order is visible but the library is empty, the issue is with account access, library display, device support, regional eligibility, or the provider’s content record.
Try one clean, supported check
- Update the relevant app or use the provider’s current website.
- Verify the account email, Apple Account, or Google account shown in the profile menu.
- Open the purchase library directly and search by the exact movie title.
- Test playback on another supported device or web surface.
- Capture the message shown when the title is missing or when the page offers Buy again.
Signing out and back in can refresh an account session, but do it only after recording which account was active. Otherwise, it is easy to lose track of the account that actually owns the movie.
Escalate to the storefront that charged you
Contact the original storefront, not a different service where you hoped to watch the movie. Provide:

- Movie title and edition, if the receipt identifies one
- Transaction date, amount, currency, and order number
- Email address or account identifier used for the purchase
- Country or marketplace associated with the transaction
- Device model, operating-system version, and app version
- A screenshot of the empty library, purchase-history entry, or Buy screen
These details let support match the payment to the correct account and investigate entitlement or regional restrictions. Apple explicitly directs customers to report a problem when purchase history confirms a title but redownloading fails. Prime Video customers who changed residence or subscription country should use the customer-service path for the affected marketplace.
Before you pay for the movie a second time
Pause the repurchase until the original account and order history are verified. Buying again can create a second transaction without fixing the first account’s access, and it can make refunds or ownership records harder to explain. The safest sequence is: identify the charged storefront, verify the exact account, check its purchase library and history, test another supported surface, then escalate with the receipt.
Digital-library access is also subject to service rules, device support, title eligibility, and country settings. A movie that is available in one app, country, or device is not automatically guaranteed to remain playable in every app or country. Treat the storefront’s purchase record as the authoritative starting point for recovery.
