If a crypto exchange and a price tracker show different prices, neither number is automatically wrong. The tracker may show a volume-weighted average across many markets, while the exchange shows one trading pair at one venue. The exchange screen may also show a last trade, bid, ask, midpoint or estimated order price—and those figures are not interchangeable.
Before buying or selling, verify the asset, trading pair, quote currency, timestamp, price definition and order-book liquidity. Then use the exchange’s current quote or order preview for the exact venue and order size you intend to trade. A tracker is useful for market context; the venue-specific preview is the relevant indication of what your order may receive.
Why the numbers differ
A tracker may calculate a global average
CoinGecko Support says its headline price is a volume-weighted average built from major exchanges and trading pairs worldwide. A global calculation can differ from any single venue because markets may have regional premiums, different liquidity and different activity levels. Decentralized-exchange prices can also diverge from centralized-exchange prices.
That aggregate answers, “What is a broad market reference value?” It does not answer, “At what price can I fill my order on this particular exchange right now?”

The exchange is showing one market
An exchange quote belongs to a specific market, such as an asset against a national currency, a stablecoin or another cryptocurrency. Even when two screens display the same token symbol, they may be referencing different quote currencies or different venues. A tracker’s converted display can also use a different reference currency from the pair you opened on the exchange.
The displayed price may be a different price type
Common labels describe different observations:

Robinhood Support describes its detail-page display as the midpoint of bid and ask prices and separately explains that an estimated bid or ask can differ from the execution price when the market moves. Its wording is: “The price shown on the crypto’s detail page within the app and web classic is the mid price, which is the midpoint of the bid and ask prices.”
Data can have different timestamps
A tracker and an exchange may collect or refresh observations on different schedules. CoinGecko’s aggregation methodology describes exchange snapshots every minute. Its timestamp guidance distinguishes when data was fetched from when a pair last traded. A tracker can therefore show a recently fetched value based on a trade that occurred earlier, while the exchange is displaying a newer quote—or the reverse.

Liquidity changes how useful a price is for your order
A quoted price is more representative when there is sufficient order-book depth near it. CoinGecko’s Trust Score methodology evaluates factors including spread, depth, volume and trading activity, while warning that reported volume can be artificially inflated. A thin market can display an attractive number for a small amount but move substantially when a larger order consumes several order-book levels.
Check the six things that must match
- Asset identity: Open the full asset name, contract information where provided and the exchange’s market page. Do not rely on a ticker symbol alone; duplicate symbols exist. CoinGecko says its operations team maps tickers to coins and checks for duplicates.
- Trading pair: Confirm the exact pair on both screens. An asset quoted against USD, a stablecoin or another cryptocurrency is not automatically the same market as a tracker’s converted global figure.
- Quote currency: Check whether the exchange uses USD, EUR, a stablecoin or another crypto asset. If the quote asset itself is moving, the displayed conversion can change even when the underlying token’s relative price is steady.
- Price definition: Identify whether each number is an aggregate, last trade, midpoint, bid, ask or order estimate. Look for labels, tooltips and the order ticket rather than assuming every large number is “the price.”
- Timestamp and freshness: Record the displayed update time. Where available, distinguish the last-trade time from the data-fetch time. A one-minute aggregation interval is a methodology detail, not a promise that every screen updates simultaneously.
- Liquidity: Open the order book for the same pair. Check the spread and the quantity available at each nearby level before judging whether the displayed number is tradable for your order size.
Use this procedure before placing an order
- Start with the exchange market page. Select the exact asset and pair you intend to trade, not a similarly named market from search results or a favorites list.
- Reconfirm the asset. Compare the full name and, where relevant, the network or contract details shown by the tracker and exchange. A matching ticker is not sufficient proof of identity.
- Write down both quote currencies. If one screen is in a fiat currency and the other is in a stablecoin or crypto asset, convert only after confirming what each number measures.
- Read the labels. Note whether the tracker uses an aggregate and whether the exchange screen uses last trade, midpoint, bid, ask or an estimate.
- Check freshness. Compare update times and inspect whether the tracker reports a last-traded timestamp, fetch timestamp or both. Refreshing a page does not necessarily create a new market trade.
- Inspect the order book. Look at the best bid, best ask, the gap between them and the quantities available near those levels. Depth matters more than a headline number when your order is sizable relative to displayed liquidity.
- Enter the intended amount without submitting. Let the exchange calculate the estimated proceeds, average price or other order details for that size. This reveals whether the quote changes as your order becomes larger.
- Review the final order preview. Confirm side, pair, amount and estimated price immediately before submission. Prices can move between display and execution, so a tracker value cannot guarantee a fill.
How bid, ask, midpoint and spread fit together
Suppose an order book shows a bid of 99 and an ask of 101 in the pair’s quote currency. The midpoint is 100, calculated as (99 + 101) ÷ 2. It is a useful reference between the two sides, but it is not simultaneously available to a buyer or seller. A buyer normally reaches the ask side, while a seller normally reaches the bid side.
The difference between ask and bid is the spread. A wide spread means the two sides are farther apart and that a screen’s midpoint can be a poor proxy for an immediate trade. A narrow spread does not eliminate execution risk: the displayed quantities may be small, and later order-book levels can have different prices.

For a larger order, inspect the estimated average price rather than multiplying the headline price by the amount. If the order consumes several levels, the resulting executions can span a range. Robinhood Support summarizes the final distinction this way: “Any price difference you may see between the estimated ask or bid price and the execution price is due to market movement.”

A worked example (illustrative numbers)
Imagine a tracker displays 2,000 units of a quote currency for an asset. The exchange’s pair page shows a last trade of 1,990, a bid of 1,980 and an ask of 2,020. The midpoint is 2,000, so the tracker and midpoint happen to match even though neither side of the book offers an immediate trade at 2,000.
Now imagine the exchange’s best ask moves to 2,080 while the tracker remains at 2,000. Several explanations remain possible: the tracker’s latest observation is older, the exchange pair is thin, the exchange uses a different quote currency, or the two screens refer to different assets. The correct response is not to assume an error; verify identity, pair, timestamps and depth, then read the order preview for the amount you would actually buy.

What an unusually large gap can indicate

Without the asset, pair, venue, trade size and timestamps, no outside observer can identify the precise cause of a particular mismatch. Treat a very large or persistent gap as a reason to pause rather than as proof of an arbitrage opportunity.

For checking the broad market
Use the tracker’s aggregate as a reference for comparing the asset across markets or watching a general trend. Remember that its volume weighting and worldwide market set can smooth differences that exist on an individual venue.
For deciding whether an order is affordable
Use the exchange’s current bid and ask, order book and order ticket for the exact pair. These are the figures tied to the venue where you would trade. The relevant side depends on direction: a buy interacts with available asks, and a sell interacts with available bids.

For the final decision to submit
Use the exchange’s order preview, including the amount, estimated price and any displayed execution conditions. Recheck it immediately before submitting because market movement can change the result after you first opened the page.
How major trackers describe their methods
CoinGecko’s published methodology says it aggregates spot-exchange tickers across pairs and takes exchange snapshots every minute. CoinGecko Support also identifies regional premiums and decentralized-exchange prices as reasons its aggregate can differ from a particular exchange. Its Trust Score methodology considers spread, order-book depth, volume and trading activity, but notes that reported volume may be artificially inflated.
CoinMarketCap Support says its market-pair price process uses an algorithm that considers confidence in the distribution of exchange-reported prices. That kind of confidence assessment is another reason a tracker’s number should be treated as a calculated reference rather than a guaranteed quote from your chosen venue.

When to stop and investigate
- The asset name, network or contract information is not clearly the same on both services.
- The exchange pair is inactive, has a very wide spread or has little depth near the displayed price.
- The tracker and exchange show materially different timestamps or one appears stale.
- The exchange has posted a notice about trading, deposits or withdrawals for the asset.
- The order preview changes sharply when you enter the amount you actually intend to trade.
If any of these conditions applies, do not place the order solely because the tracker appears cheaper or more expensive. Reconfirm the pair and market status, reduce uncertainty about the quote and use the venue’s own preview as the final checkpoint.
