If a crypto exchange restricts your account for a compliance review, verify the notice inside the official app or website, identify exactly which functions are blocked, answer the stated questions with accurate documents, and keep a dated case file. Ask support for the restriction’s scope, any permitted withdrawal route, the response deadline, and the escalation process. A compliance review is not automatically a finding of wrongdoing, but a court, law-enforcement, or sanctions order can limit what the exchange may release or explain. Never give anyone your password, two-factor code, recovery phrase, remote access, or cryptocurrency to “unlock” funds.
What a frozen crypto account can mean
“Frozen” is an everyday description, not a single technical status. An exchange may pause one activity while leaving another available, place a security hold on the account, close the account while allowing a controlled withdrawal, or obey an external legal order. Your first task is to determine which state applies.

Do not infer the status from a generic email alone. The exchange’s authenticated notice and a written support response are more useful than a third party’s interpretation.

Why an exchange may request information
Exchanges perform identity and transaction reviews as part of their compliance and security programs. Kraken says it may ask for information during a routine review, after a change in account use, after a transaction changes in size or type, or when it needs clarification about material already supplied. A request does not by itself prove misconduct. Kraken Support states: "Receiving a request does not mean you have done anything wrong."

Kraken’s listed examples of restriction triggers include inaccurate identity details, a payment reversal, a withdrawal destination associated with prohibited or scam-related activity, suspected malicious activity, and failure to respond to an information request. These are examples from that exchange’s policy, not a complete industry-wide list.
What to do in the first hour
- Verify the notice independently. Type the exchange’s known official address into your browser or open the official app yourself. Do not use a link in an unexpected message. Sign in and look for the account notice, case number, or information-request screen. Kraken says, "A genuine request will always be visible on your account after you log in."
- Record the current state. Note whether you can sign in, trade, deposit fiat, withdraw fiat, deposit crypto, withdraw crypto, or use only selected services. Capture the displayed wording, date, time zone, case reference, and any deadline. Save screenshots or PDF copies where permitted.
- Ask four precise questions through the authenticated support route. Request confirmation of which functions are disabled; whether a withdrawal is permitted; what information remains outstanding; and the response deadline and escalation route. Ask whether the restriction is an information review, security hold, payment-reversal issue, account closure, or an authority-directed freeze to the extent the exchange can disclose that.
- Secure the account if anything looks unfamiliar. If you see an unknown device, login, API key, or transaction, change the exchange password through the official site, secure the associated email account, review active sessions and devices, and enable or verify two-factor authentication. Do not make changes through a support link supplied in an unsolicited message.
- Open a case file. Keep the notice, every request, uploaded files, upload confirmations, transaction IDs, and dated support replies in one location. A clear chronology makes it easier to show that you met a deadline or identify the one item still missing.
How to answer a compliance request
Answer the questions that were actually asked. Exchanges may seek identity, address, banking, source-of-funds, source-of-wealth, transaction, or wallet-control information, but there is no universal checklist. Sending a large unrelated bundle of sensitive records can create privacy and security risks and may not resolve the review.

Check every file before submitting it. Names, dates, amounts, and explanations should agree across documents. If a record is unavailable, say why and ask what substitute evidence is acceptable. Kraken’s request workflow lets customers review item status, submit items separately, and replace an item marked as needing an update. Use that status information rather than repeatedly uploading the same file.

Can you withdraw while the account is under review?
There is no universal answer. Withdrawal rights depend on the restriction, the exchange entity, the asset and destination, and any legal order.
- A limited information review may leave withdrawals available. Kraken’s information-request page says withdrawals are not affected in the specific unanswered-request scenario it describes, while trading or deposits may be paused.
- A funding suspension can block withdrawals as well as deposits. Kraken describes that broader possibility for temporary funding suspensions.
- A closure may still provide a controlled withdrawal route. Kraken says remaining balances may be sent to a previously linked bank account in the customer’s name unless additional verification or legal or compliance restrictions apply; manual review can delay the transfer.
- A court, law-enforcement, or sanctions freeze may prevent release altogether, and the exchange may be legally limited in what it can tell you. Coinbase describes such exceptional freezes and says it contacts affected customers where legally permitted.
Ask support to state in writing whether your specific restriction permits a fiat cash-out, a crypto transfer, or neither. Do not attempt to route funds through another person’s account or use a second account to bypass the restriction; that can create additional security, policy, or legal problems.
How long can a compliance review take?
The reviewed exchange materials do not establish a shared service-level deadline. Binance says an account may remain locked during a request-for-information process until sufficient information is provided. Kraken says outcomes and restrictions depend on the case. Follow the due date displayed in your account and request a status update through the same authenticated case if no date is shown.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s November 2022 complaint bulletin describes some consumers reporting verification-related freezes lasting weeks or months. Those complaints show the kind of harm people report; they are not a representative frequency study or a guaranteed timeline. Do not rely on an online promise that a review normally ends in a particular number of days.

When following up, state the case number, the date you submitted each requested item, the item-status result, and the practical impact of the restriction. Ask whether anything is incomplete and when the next update is expected. Keep each reply with its date.
How to escalate when support does not resolve it
Use the exchange’s formal complaint channel
If ordinary support stops responding or repeats a generic answer, use the exchange’s published complaint or review process. Request a written case reference and identify the decision you want reviewed: a missing-document determination, a security hold, a closure, or an unexplained withdrawal block. Keep your message factual and attach the chronology rather than sending multiple contradictory explanations.

Distinguish an internal decision from a legal freeze
Ask whether the restriction is imposed by the exchange or required by an authority, to the extent the exchange can disclose that. If a court or sanctions order controls the funds, customer support may have no power to lift it. An internal second review can correct an error; it cannot override an external order.
Choose outside help based on location and entity
The proper regulator, ombudsman, court, filing deadline, and appeal rights depend on your country or state and the legal entity named in the exchange’s terms. If the balance is substantial, the delay is causing serious harm, an authority is mentioned, or the exchange has closed the account, consult a lawyer licensed where the relevant entity operates or where you live. A lawyer can identify the applicable process; paying an unlicensed “recovery” service does not compel an exchange to release funds.

Account restrictions create an ideal pretext for impersonators. Treat an unsolicited call, direct message, or email offering a paid shortcut as suspicious, even if it knows your case number.

- Do not provide your password, two-factor code, recovery phrase, private key, or backup codes.
- Do not install remote-control software or allow anyone to operate your computer or phone.
- Do not send cryptocurrency to an address claimed to unlock or verify your account.
- Do not pay a supposed employee, “recovery agent,” or investigator through a personal wallet or bank account.
- End the conversation and start a new session through the exchange’s official app or typed web address.
Kraken’s guidance specifically says it will not ask for a password, two-factor code, recovery phrase, remote access, or for you to move funds to another address as part of its information request.
If the exchange closes your account
Closure and a temporary review are different decisions. Read the closure notice for the stated balance-withdrawal method and any verification condition. Kraken says customers may generally withdraw remaining balances to a previously linked bank account in their own name, but further verification, legal restrictions, or manual review can prevent immediate transfer. Kraken also says a customer who believes a closure was mistaken can ask support to escalate for a second review, although closure decisions are generally final.
Do not interpret “closed” as proof that funds are lost, and do not assume it guarantees instant access. Ask what destination is allowed, which identity checks remain, and whether the balance is subject to a hold separate from the closure.
Questions to keep in your case file
- What exact activities are restricted right now?
- Which document or answer is still outstanding?
- What deadline applies, including the time zone?
- Is any withdrawal route available, and what destination rules apply?
- Is this an exchange review, a security hold, a payment reversal, an account closure, or an authority-directed freeze?
- What is the formal complaint or second-review process?
- What case number and next-update date should I quote?
Bottom line
Verify the restriction inside the official account, document the exact scope, submit only accurate and relevant evidence, and preserve proof of every step. Withdrawal access varies by restriction; no common review deadline is established. Escalate through the exchange first, then obtain jurisdiction-specific legal help when the amount or circumstances justify it. A legitimate exchange will not require your credentials, recovery phrase, remote access, or a payment to release funds.
