First, identify what kind of hold you are seeing; a frozen Bitcoin withdrawal is not always an outage or a confiscation. It may be a fixed security cooldown, a payment settlement hold, an open-order or margin condition, a compliance review, a court or sanctions restriction, a technical incident, or a liquidity problem.
Save the exact error and withdrawal details, check the exchange’s official status information, and contact support only through the authenticated website or app. Never share a seed phrase, one-time code, or remote access with anyone who promises to unlock the funds.
Classify the freeze before trying to fix it
The status message, recent account changes, and balance activity usually indicate which path applies. Classification matters because some holds expire automatically, while others require documents, a balance correction, or a formal legal process.

| Possible hold | What can trigger it | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Security cooldown | A password, email, phone, or two-factor authentication change | Secure the account, confirm the change was authorized, and wait for the published cooldown to expire. |
| Funding or settlement hold | A recent bank transfer, ACH or Plaid payment, or some card-funded purchase | Check the payment’s settlement status and the exchange’s hold terms before retrying. |
| Trading or balance condition | Pending deposits, open orders, open margin positions, negative balances, or an asset mismatch | Complete or cancel the relevant transaction, close or settle positions, and bring the account balance into compliance. |
| Compliance or risk review | Identity, source-of-funds, transaction-purpose, or destination-wallet questions | Submit accurate documents through the official portal and request the review status and next update in writing. |
| Legal or sanctions restriction | A court order, government request, or sanctions obligation | Ask what information can legally be disclosed and follow the exchange’s formal notice or review process. |
| Technical or liquidity event | A wallet outage, protocol maintenance, market stress, or a shortage of available coins | Check incident notices, preserve evidence, and escalate if the freeze remains opaque or support is unreachable. |
Do not assume that a pending label means the Bitcoin transaction has been broadcast. If the exchange has not provided a transaction ID, the coins may still be held in its internal system rather than on the Bitcoin network.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Your first-hour checklist
- Capture the evidence. Take screenshots of the exact error, withdrawal ID, amount, destination address, selected network, timestamp, account notices, and support-ticket number. Save the original email or in-app notification as well.
- Check official incident information. Visit the exchange’s status page and help center from a bookmarked or manually typed address. Look for a Bitcoin-wallet outage, maintenance notice, deposit or withdrawal suspension, or a published settlement hold.
- Review recent security changes. Check whether the password, email address, phone number, or 2FA method changed recently. BitMEX documents a 24-hour cooldown after a password reset and a 72-hour cooldown after an email change. Bitvavo documents a 24-hour block after an email, password, 2FA, or phone change. Those are examples of automatic controls; they are not universal deadlines for every exchange.
- Inspect account activity. Look for pending deposits, open or partially filled orders, open margin positions, negative balances, or a mismatch between the asset you selected and the wallet or network you chose. Kraken lists each of these as a reason a withdrawal can be blocked and says support cannot bypass time-based holds.
- Secure the account. If a change was not yours, change the password from the official app or site, revoke unfamiliar sessions or API keys, and contact the exchange’s security team through its logged-in channel. Do not repeatedly enter credentials into links sent by an alleged support agent.
- Open one authenticated ticket. Use the exchange’s support form or in-app chat while logged in. Include the withdrawal ID and evidence, but never include a seed phrase, private key, full one-time code, or remote-desktop access.
How each type of hold is handled
Security cooldowns after account changes
Exchanges use cooling-off periods to stop an attacker who has just taken over an account from changing credentials and immediately withdrawing. A fixed timer normally cannot be shortened by a front-line agent. Verify that your email, phone, password, and 2FA are under your control, remove unauthorized sessions, and wait for the documented period. Avoid making additional security changes during the timer unless the exchange’s instructions require them, because another change may start a new cooldown.
When contacting support, ask for the exact event that started the timer, the time at which it will expire, and whether any other hold is active. Record the answer in the existing ticket rather than opening several new conversations.
Payment and settlement holds
A balance can appear in your account and remain tradable while withdrawals are disabled because the underlying payment has not settled or could still be reversed. Kraken describes examples involving ACH or Plaid transfers and some card-funded purchases. The hold period depends on the payment method, region, and exchange rules. Confirm which deposit created the restriction, when it is scheduled to settle, and whether withdrawing an unrelated balance is permitted under the terms.
Do not send a second payment merely to force the first one through. That can create another pending deposit and make reconciliation harder. Keep bank or card confirmations with your exchange records.

Open orders, margin, negative balances, and asset mismatches
An exchange may reserve funds for an open order or margin position, or require you to cover a negative balance before releasing anything. Cancel orders that you no longer need, close or settle leveraged positions according to the platform’s instructions, and wait for the account ledger to update. If the withdrawal form offers several assets or networks, confirm that the asset in your balance matches the asset supported by the destination. A Bitcoin address cannot safely receive an unrelated token, and choosing a different network can make funds inaccessible.
Take a fresh screenshot after the balance changes. If the withdrawal remains blocked, tell support which order, position, or balance entry you resolved and ask them to identify the remaining condition.
Compliance and risk reviews
A review may ask for identity documents, proof of source of funds, the purpose of a transaction, or information about the destination wallet. Submit truthful, complete documents only through the exchange’s authenticated portal. Ask for four specific items: the category of review, the documents still needed, the date of the next status update, and a complaint or case reference number.
Do not alter documents, guess at transaction details, or move funds through another account to avoid questions. A review can involve legal obligations that limit what an employee is allowed to disclose. If the exchange gives no meaningful update for a prolonged period, keep the ticket open and use the formal complaint route described below.

Court orders and sanctions restrictions
Coinbase says it may freeze funds when compelled by a court or another authority, or when required to comply with sanctions programs, and that it contacts customers where the law permits. The practical remedy depends on the authority, the exchange’s legal entity, and your jurisdiction. Ask whether the restriction is a legal hold, what notice you are entitled to receive, and how to submit a challenge or provide requested information. Do not assume that a technical support agent can release it.
Technical incidents and liquidity concerns
A wallet service can be offline because of maintenance, a software problem, a blockchain upgrade, or an incident affecting transaction processing. A different risk is a liquidity shortage: the exchange may not have enough readily available Bitcoin to honor withdrawals even while account balances are displayed. A Michigan consumer alert recommends checking whether the firm discloses reserves, has reachable customer service, and has a history of interruptions when withdrawals are suspended.
One short outage does not prove insolvency. A freeze becomes more concerning when it is prolonged, opaque, accompanied by contradictory messages, or paired with disappearing support and no credible incident updates. Preserve every notice, ledger screenshot, and ticket response before escalating.

There is no single worldwide maximum. A published security timer may be predictable: the BitMEX examples are 24 hours after a password reset and 72 hours after an email change, while Bitvavo’s documented block after several account-security changes is 24 hours. Payment holds, compliance reviews, legal restrictions, and incidents follow different rules and may not have a guaranteed completion time.

Ask support for a concrete review date or the event that ends the hold. If the answer is only “wait” without a category, reference number, or next update, request those details in the same authenticated ticket. Keep a calendar of promised dates and follow up after each one rather than sending multiple duplicate tickets.
What to ask support
A precise request is easier to route than a general demand to unlock the account. Include:
- The withdrawal ID, amount, Bitcoin address, network, and time in UTC or the exchange’s displayed time zone.
- The exact status text and whether a Bitcoin transaction ID has been issued.
- The category of hold: security, settlement, balance, compliance, legal, technical, or liquidity.
- The specific action or document required from you.
- The date and time of the next review or automatic release.
- A complaint reference number and the legal entity handling your account.
Reply in the original authenticated conversation. Do not post account numbers, identity documents, addresses, or screenshots containing personal data on public forums.

- Use the formal complaint process. Find the exchange’s complaint or appeal procedure in its help center or terms. Submit a chronological summary with the ticket number and attachments, and save the confirmation.
- Contact the appropriate authority. The regulator or consumer-protection body depends on the exchange’s legal entity and your residence. A complaint cannot guarantee release of the coins, but it creates an official record and may identify the correct dispute channel.
- Get legal advice if the stakes are high. If you suspect insolvency, theft, a court action, or a large unreleased balance, consult a qualified lawyer promptly. Bring the account agreement, deposit and withdrawal history, notices, and all support correspondence.
- Protect your privacy. Avoid public posts that reveal your identity, account balance, wallet addresses, or travel details. Public pressure does not replace the authenticated complaint process.
The UK Financial Conduct Authority’s GC26/2 guidance says firms should offer timely and effective support across all channels, especially during incidents such as wallet freezes, staking failures, or protocol upgrades. It also describes an opaque, extended withdrawal hold during market stress without updates or escalation routes as poor practice. Those principles support documenting the delay and seeking a formal escalation, but they do not create a universal release deadline in every country.

How to avoid recovery scams
People with frozen withdrawals are targeted by impersonators because the problem is urgent and financially sensitive. Treat an unsolicited call, direct message, or email promising an unlock as suspicious. Common warning signs include an urgent fee, a demand for secrecy, a request to install remote-access software, or a request for a seed phrase or one-time authentication code.
The CFTC advises: “End the call or online conversation, then independently contact your bank, brokerage firm, government agency, or company using a verified telephone number or official website.” Apply that rule to crypto support. Type the exchange address yourself or use the official app, and verify that a ticket appears inside your account. Bitcoin transfers are generally irreversible once sent, so a payment to a supposed recovery agent can create a second loss.
Moving Bitcoin to a wallet you control after the hold ends
Once the exchange confirms that withdrawals are enabled, reduce the chance of a second mistake with a controlled test:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Prepare the destination wallet. Use a wallet whose private keys or recovery material are under your control. For long-term holdings, a Bitcoin hardware wallet is one self-custody category to consider; evaluate how you will protect its recovery information before transferring funds.
- Copy and verify the address. Paste the Bitcoin address into the exchange form, then compare it character by character with the address shown on the wallet device or application. Malware can replace a copied address, so do not rely only on the clipboard.
- Select Bitcoin’s network. Confirm that the withdrawal is for native Bitcoin on the network your wallet supports, not a similarly named asset or incompatible network. Read the exchange’s network warning before approving.
- Send a small test amount. Use an amount you can afford to have temporarily unavailable. Keep the withdrawal ID and, once broadcast, the Bitcoin transaction ID.
- Verify receipt. Confirm that the test appears in the wallet and has the expected network status before sending the remaining balance. Retain the exchange receipt and wallet record.
A test withdrawal does not eliminate network fees, confirmation delays, or address risk, but it limits the damage from a wrong address or network selection. For future deposits, keep a current copy of the exchange’s withdrawal rules and your own transaction records.
Preventing another freeze
- Make security changes when you do not urgently need to withdraw, and note the exchange’s cooldown rules.
- Keep identity and source-of-funds records organized so a legitimate review can be answered accurately.
- Leave enough settled balance to cover fees and avoid withdrawing funds reserved for open orders or margin.
- Use a unique password, strong 2FA, and account alerts; review sessions and API permissions regularly.
- Maintain a self-custody plan for long-term holdings instead of treating an exchange account as a permanent wallet.
- Test a small withdrawal whenever you first use a destination wallet or after a major account change.
The immediate goal is not to force a blocked button. It is to identify the hold, preserve evidence, complete the legitimate requirement, and escalate through accountable channels if the exchange will not explain the delay. Once access is restored, a verified small withdrawal and a wallet you control reduce dependence on a single exchange for future access to your Bitcoin.
