If you suspect a Cisco Nexus switch has been tampered with, treat it as a security incident first and a configuration problem second. Record the switch identity, NX-OS release, symptoms and timeline; preserve logs and runtime evidence; check Cisco’s advisories for the exact platform and release; then contain access with your incident lead and network team. Do not reboot, erase or broadly reconfigure the switch until you have decided what evidence must be retained and how essential services will be protected.
There is no universal diagnostic command sequence. The right response depends on the Nexus model, NX-OS version and mode, topology, symptoms, business impact and whether an attacker is still active. The sequence below is a safe triage framework, not a substitute for Cisco’s current platform-specific forensic procedure.
1. Start an incident record and define the scope
Open or update the organization’s incident ticket before making changes. Assign an incident lead who can coordinate security, network operations, system owners and, if necessary, Cisco. Keep a contemporaneous record of every observation, command, configuration change and decision, including the person and time.
Capture the switch identity
- Record the exact Nexus model, serial number, hostname, asset identifier and physical or cloud location.
- Record the NX-OS software version, image name and operating mode. Include the output as collected rather than relying on a remembered version string.
- List management addresses, management protocols, authentication sources and any out-of-band console path.
Write a precise symptom and timeline
Note what triggered the suspicion: unexpected administrator accounts, changed configuration, unexplained reboots, altered routing or VLAN behavior, unusual process activity, failed integrity checks, suspicious connections, performance changes or unexplained service outages. Record the first and last known times, the last known-good state, and the time zone used. Add recent administrative, automation, image, certificate, credential and topology changes. Identify affected links, devices, applications and subnets, and distinguish confirmed impact from a report that has not yet been verified.

Preserve the chain of custody
Store collected files in a controlled location with access logging and an integrity process approved by your incident team. Do not edit command output or overwrite the original export. If a third party may investigate, document who collected each item, from which device, by what method and when.
2. Preserve evidence before cleanup or reset
Evidence can disappear when a switch reboots, rotates logs, reloads an image or receives broad configuration changes. Cisco’s Nexus OS security guidance strongly recommends saving logs remotely because they are critical evidence for detecting and investigating incidents. Export what is available before attempting remediation, while avoiding actions that unnecessarily change state.
Secure centralized and local logs
- Protect copies of remote syslog, authentication, AAA, TACACS or RADIUS, network-management, automation and orchestration logs for the relevant time window.
- Preserve local Nexus logs and note their retention limits. A local log is useful, but an attacker with device access may be able to alter or delete local settings and records.
- Record the clock source, time zone and any observed time drift so events can be correlated accurately.
Capture configuration and runtime state
Use Cisco’s current Nexus first-responder forensic guide for the applicable platform and release to collect configuration, runtime state and other specified outputs. Capture both the active configuration and the information needed to understand what is actually running. Follow the guide’s collection and handling instructions rather than inventing a command list from a different Nexus generation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPreserve software and process evidence
The Cisco guide is described as covering software integrity and digital-signing characteristics, critical-process core files and non-volatile artifacts. It also addresses NX-OS virtual technologies, including Guest Shell, Docker settings and deployed containers. Those areas matter when suspicious activity is not visible in the conventional network configuration. Do not delete a core file, container or persistent artifact merely because it appears unfamiliar; document it and obtain expert direction.

Do not reboot just to see whether the symptom returns
A reload may clear volatile state, terminate a process, rotate logs or destroy a useful snapshot of an active intrusion. If service continuity requires a reload, have the incident lead approve it, preserve the available evidence first and record the exact reason, expected effect and rollback plan.
3. Check whether a Cisco advisory matches
Use Cisco Security Advisories with the exact Nexus platform, NX-OS release and deployment details you recorded. Search by product and version, then read the affected-product, fixed-release, workaround and configuration requirements in the advisory itself. A broadly similar symptom is not proof that the advisory applies.
When an advisory matches
Follow the advisory’s mitigation and fixed-release instructions, including prerequisites, exposure conditions and recommended release information. Coordinate maintenance, backup, validation and change approval with the network team. Preserve evidence before applying a mitigation that changes the device.

Do not assume that an unknown compromise is a vulnerability exploit, and do not assume that the absence of a matching advisory proves the switch is clean. Continue forensic triage, review authentication and management telemetry, and escalate when the cause is unclear. Cisco’s escalation guidance specifically recommends collecting pertinent device outputs and opening a TAC request in that situation.

4. Contain the threat without causing avoidable outages
Containment is a risk decision, not a canned Nexus command. Work through the incident lead and network operators to decide how to limit an attacker’s access or lateral movement while retaining essential management and service where possible.
Assess the blast radius first
- Identify whether the suspected access is confined to the switch management plane or involves connected hosts, virtual systems, routing adjacencies, storage, or multiple subnets.
- Check redundancy, alternate paths, maintenance windows, out-of-band access and dependencies before disabling interfaces, changing VLANs, altering routing or restricting management protocols.
- Determine whether the suspicious activity is active, whether damage is ongoing and whether volatile evidence can be captured before isolation.
Use isolation proportionate to the impact
CISA’s general incident-response guidance says switch-level network isolation may be appropriate when several systems or subnets appear impacted. That is a general principle, not a Nexus-specific command prescription. Isolation can sever production, storage or management paths and can lock responders out. If you isolate, document exactly what was changed, preserve a management path where safe, and verify the effect from an approved monitoring point.
Prefer narrow controls when they are sufficient
If evidence points to a particular management source, account, protocol or connected segment, a narrowly scoped control may reduce risk while preserving service. Have the network team validate that the control cannot be bypassed through another path. Broad credential, routing or VLAN changes can destroy evidence and create a second incident if made without dependency analysis.

5. Choose the right Cisco escalation path
Escalate with the evidence package, not just a statement that the switch looks unusual. Include model and serial, NX-OS release and mode, timeline, symptoms, affected services, recent changes, relevant logs, preserved outputs, containment actions and the business impact.

| Situation | Primary path | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| The cause is unclear or you need platform-specific technical help | Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) | Review the device outputs, troubleshoot the platform and guide recovery or mitigation. |
| An active cyber incident requires response expertise | Cisco Talos Incident Response | Support incident investigation and response during an ongoing compromise. |
| You believe the event relates to a known Cisco security advisory | Cisco PSIRT | Handle vulnerability-related reporting and coordination. |
| You suspect a new, previously undisclosed vulnerability | Cisco PSIRT, with TAC as needed for operations | Report the suspected zero-day while maintaining technical incident support. |
These paths are distinct. TAC is the normal technical-support route for an unexplained device problem; Talos is an incident-response service for an active security event; PSIRT is the vulnerability-reporting route. Cisco’s incident escalation guidance also points responders to its forensic guides and asks them to gather relevant device outputs before opening a request.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Use the Nexus forensic guide for detailed collection
Cisco identifies its forensic guides as first-responder triage resources. The Cisco-authored description of the Nexus guide includes configuration and runtime state, software-signature and integrity assessment, process core files, persistent artifacts, Guest Shell configuration, Docker settings and deployed containers. The summary is not a replacement for the full current procedure.
Match the procedure to the exact device
Confirm that the guide applies to the model, NX-OS release and operating mode. Collection details can differ between Nexus families and releases. If the device is in a virtualized or container-enabled configuration, include those components in scope rather than treating them as unrelated software.

Collect first, interpret second
Label raw outputs and preserve them unchanged. Interpretation should account for expected platform processes, automated configuration systems, scheduled jobs and approved administrative activity. An unfamiliar process or file is a lead for investigation, not proof of malware.

7. Plan recovery before taking destructive action
Recovery should begin only after the evidence plan, containment decision and rebuild prerequisites are agreed. Prepare a known-good NX-OS image appropriate for the exact model, validated configuration, credential and access recovery, licensing or feature requirements, console or out-of-band access and a test plan. Decide how you will verify software integrity, management access, routing, VLANs, links and dependent services after recovery.
Understand Secure Erase
Cisco’s Nexus 9000 documentation describes Secure Erase as a factory-reset option for recovery when stored key material or credentials are compromised. The cited guide says the feature was introduced beginning with NX-OS 10.2(2)F. Confirm applicability for the exact Nexus 9000 model, release and mode before relying on it.
Secure Erase clears configuration, logs and storage information, so it can destroy evidence needed for investigation. It does not erase external storage. Treat it as a destructive recovery action, not as a diagnostic test. Preserve logs and device artifacts, obtain incident-lead approval, and confirm the rebuild and validation plan before using it.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Quick Recap
Rebuild and validate methodically
- Preserve the final evidence set and record the decision to rebuild.
- Secure the approved image, configuration baseline and credential plan through trusted channels.
- Use console or another verified management path and follow the model-specific recovery procedure.
- Reapply only reviewed configuration, credentials, keys and management access.
- Validate image integrity, administrative accounts, logging, time synchronization, routing, VLANs, interfaces, redundancy and connected-service health.
- Continue heightened monitoring and compare behavior with the recorded known-good baseline.
8. Decisions that commonly go wrong
- Rebooting before collection: this can remove volatile evidence and change the symptom.
- Erasing immediately: a factory reset may restore service but destroy logs, configuration and storage evidence.
- Applying a similar advisory: an advisory must match the exact product and release; otherwise use triage and expert support.
- Changing many controls at once: broad routing, VLAN, credential and management changes make cause-and-effect difficult to establish and can create outages.
- Relying only on local logs: Cisco recommends remote centralized logging because local records and settings may be modified or deleted.
- Assuming an odd process is malicious: compare it with the platform’s expected processes and the forensic guide before drawing a conclusion.
- Using a generic switch-isolation command: CISA’s guidance is topology-independent; the correct Nexus action depends on redundancy, dependencies and business impact.
9. A concise responder checklist
- Open an incident record and appoint an incident lead.
- Record model, serial or asset identity, NX-OS version and mode, symptoms, timeline, recent changes and affected services.
- Protect remote and local logs; synchronize the event timeline and preserve raw outputs.
- Use Cisco’s applicable first-responder forensic guide to collect configuration, runtime, integrity, core-file, persistent-artifact and virtual-technology evidence.
- Search Cisco Security Advisories using the exact platform and release.
- Decide on containment with security and network operations, balancing evidence, availability and lateral-movement risk.
- Escalate to TAC, Talos Incident Response or PSIRT according to the situation.
- Only after evidence and a recovery plan are ready, rebuild or use the model-appropriate Secure Erase procedure.
- Validate the recovered switch and continue monitoring for recurrence.
