If a Bitcoin drop triggers a margin call, open the exchange’s authenticated risk panel immediately. Confirm the maintenance-margin requirement, margin ratio, liquidation price, eligible collateral and cure deadline. Cancel orders that would increase exposure. If the platform allows it, the documented cures are to add eligible collateral or reduce/close part of the position—only after checking what each choice can cost. An uncured call can place the account in reduce-only mode and lead to automatic liquidation.
Do not rely on a generic “Bitcoin liquidation percentage.” Thresholds, mark prices, grace periods and even the meaning of a margin ratio differ by exchange, contract and cross-versus-isolated settings.
Take these steps in the first 10 minutes
- Verify the alert inside the signed-in exchange account. Do not use an email button or text-message link as your only source. Open the venue’s risk, margin or derivatives panel and note the product: spot margin, perpetual, futures or options.
- Record the account state. Write down collateral, borrowed amount, account equity, maintenance requirement, current margin ratio, liquidation price, mark price and any displayed deadline. Save a screenshot with the time and your account’s time zone.
- Freeze additional exposure. Cancel unfilled orders that would enlarge the position. Avoid transferring in a different asset until the venue confirms that asset is eligible collateral and explains its valuation haircut.
- Identify the available remedy. The panel or contract should say whether depositing collateral, reducing the position, or both will cure the call. Check the minimum amount needed and whether fees, funding or interest will consume part of the deposit.
- Check the clock. A grace period is not universal. Some products can become reduce-only or liquidate as soon as a threshold is crossed; others provide a stated remediation window.
- If liquidation has begun, stop opening trades. Preserve order history, fills, fees, funding charges and account statements. Use the exchange’s official support channel for a balance or execution dispute.
A margin call is a risk threshold breach, not a signal that Bitcoin is about to rebound. The engine acts on its contract rules and price feed, not on your forecast.

What a margin call actually means
In leveraged trading, your equity is the collateral remaining after unrealized profit and loss, borrowing, interest, funding and other applicable charges. The exchange compares that equity with a maintenance-margin requirement—the minimum margin needed to keep the position open. Coinbase Global Exchange defines a margin call as occurring when “account equity falls below the maintenance margin requirement for a portfolio.”

Initial, maintenance and close-out margin
- Initial margin is the amount required to open a position of a given size.
- Maintenance margin is the minimum required to keep the existing position open as its value changes.
- Close-out margin is an emergency level at which the venue can intervene to close risk.
These labels are not interchangeable. A position can remain open above maintenance margin while still being far below the collateral level you originally posted. Coinbase’s liquidation process can put an account below initial margin into reduce-only mode and partially liquidate when current margin falls below maintenance. Negative equity can accelerate liquidation in its margin-call process.
Why the displayed liquidation price moves
The liquidation price is an estimate based on position size, leverage, collateral, maintenance tiers, fees, funding or interest, and the venue’s mark-price methodology. It is not necessarily the last traded price. Adding collateral can move the estimate farther away; reducing the position can change the maintenance tier and reduce the amount at risk. Withdrawals, adverse funding, a fee charge or a change in tier can move it closer again.
How much collateral is needed?
Use the number shown in the authenticated risk panel as the starting point. Conceptually, the immediate deficit is the maintenance-margin requirement minus current equity, but the exchange’s calculation may include tiered requirements, haircuts, accrued charges and a minimum safety buffer. A deposit that merely brings the ratio to the call threshold can leave you vulnerable to the next small Bitcoin move.

Check collateral eligibility before transferring
- Confirm the exact asset and wallet type accepted for that product.
- Check whether the asset is valued at a discount, and whether that discount changes during volatility.
- Allow for transfer confirmation time and for the venue to credit the funds before a deadline.
- Verify whether a deposit first repays borrowing, interest or fees rather than increasing usable margin.
Only add money you can afford to lose. A deposit lowers the immediate ratio but increases the capital exposed if Bitcoin continues falling. Treat the displayed cure amount as a risk calculation, not as a recommendation to keep the trade open.
Deposit collateral or reduce the position?

Compare the two outcomes in account currency, including trading fees, funding or interest, slippage and taxes where relevant. A smaller position with a realized loss can leave you solvent; a fully funded but oversized position can still be liquidated. Neither action guarantees that the remaining trade will be profitable.
Exchange rules are materially different
Percentages from one venue cannot be transplanted to another. The following published figures illustrate the differences; they apply only to the named service and product documentation.

Other rules that change the result
Before interpreting any ratio, check the contract for its maintenance-margin formula, risk tiers, mark-price source, collateral list, liquidation fees, insurance-fund or deficit treatment, and whether a negative balance can remain after liquidation. Cross margin generally shares collateral across positions, so one losing position can consume funds supporting others. Isolated margin assigns a defined collateral amount to a position, but that amount can still be fully lost. The exact behavior is venue-specific.

Reduce-only mode allows orders that decrease exposure but blocks orders that would increase it. It is a warning that the account has little room for error, not proof that liquidation has already occurred. Canceling an order that increases size may be necessary even if the interface still appears to allow it.
Liquidation is the venue’s risk engine closing some or all positions when the account no longer satisfies its rules. Partial liquidation can reduce size first; a full liquidation can follow if the account remains below the required level. The execution price can differ from the displayed liquidation estimate because markets move, mark prices update and fees are charged. Insurance funds or other deficit procedures may apply, but the contract determines whether a shortfall can become a balance you still owe.

What to do when the market is moving fast
Use the mark price, not a social-media chart
Many derivatives venues trigger risk actions from a mark price designed to reduce manipulation, while the chart you are watching may show last trade or index price. Read the product specification for the mark-price formula and index components. A brief wick on a public chart does not prove that the exchange’s trigger was wrong, and a calm last-trade chart does not guarantee that your mark price has not crossed a threshold.
Choose execution deliberately
- A market order prioritizes speed but can incur slippage in a thin or rapidly falling book.
- A limit order controls price but may not fill before the cure deadline.
- Reducing several positions can produce a different maintenance requirement than closing only the largest one.
- Check whether the venue’s liquidation engine has priority over your order and whether cancel requests can be delayed.
Do not chase a rebound by adding leverage while a call is open. If the account enters reduce-only mode, regard that restriction as a risk-control state rather than a trading challenge.
If you believe the call or liquidation was wrong
- Keep the original alert, risk-panel screenshot and time stamps.
- Export fills, order IDs, mark-price information, fees, funding or interest entries, transfers and statements.
- Compare the event with the contract version in force at that time, including maintenance tiers and collateral haircuts.
- Submit one chronological case through the venue’s authenticated support channel. Do not share seed phrases, passwords or one-time codes.
Support can investigate an execution or accounting discrepancy, but a later price recovery does not by itself establish that the liquidation violated the rules.

After the position is closed: prevent another call
Set a liquidation-distance alert
Use a personal threshold well before the exchange’s call level. Alerts should account for the mark price and the distance to liquidation, not just a percentage move in the spot market.
Define maximum loss and leverage in advance
Write down the largest acceptable loss, the maximum position size and the collateral reserve before opening a trade. Keep the reserve separate from funds you need for living expenses or near-term obligations.
Review the product, not just the price
- Confirm whether the account is cross or isolated margin.
- Read the maintenance tiers for the size you actually trade.
- Understand funding, interest, liquidation fees and transfer delays.
- Check how the venue handles residual negative equity and insurance-fund shortfalls.
Leverage magnifies a move in both directions, but the liquidation engine can close the position before a forecast rebound arrives.

A 2021 arXiv study, “Liquidation, Leverage and Optimal Margin in Bitcoin Futures Markets,” reported forced-liquidation incidence of 3.51% per day for long positions and 1.89% per day for short positions in its BitMEX perpetual-futures sample. Those are scoped historical results from that study’s market, period and methodology—not a current universal Bitcoin statistic. No single present-day margin-call frequency applies across spot margin, futures, perpetuals and options.
Final decision rule
Use the venue’s current risk panel and contract as the authority. If you cannot verify the maintenance requirement, eligible collateral, mark-price rule and deadline, do not add funds merely because the price might recover. A sustainable buffer or a smaller position is safer than relying on a precise-looking liquidation percentage copied from another exchange.
