First, find the transaction ID (txid) in the wallet that sent the bitcoin. Look it up in a reputable block explorer or the recipient’s verified system, then check whether it has zero confirmations (unconfirmed) or is included in a block. A pending transaction, a confirmed payment sent to the wrong address, and a merchant that has not credited a confirmed deposit require different actions.
Do not send more bitcoin, attempt a “recovery” service, or disclose a seed phrase or private key until you have verified the destination, amount, txid, and confirmation state.
Start with the transaction ID and confirmation state
The txid is the transaction’s identifier, usually a long string of letters and numbers shown in the sending wallet’s activity or transaction-details screen. Record it exactly. Also record the destination address, amount, fee, date and time, and any invoice, order, or deposit reference.

- Check the txid independently. Use a well-known block explorer that you reached by typing its address yourself, or use the recipient service’s official deposit-status page.
- Check confirmations. Zero confirmations means the transaction is still unconfirmed in the network’s view. One or more confirmations means it has been included in a block; the recipient may still require additional confirmations before crediting it.
- Compare the details. Verify every destination address, each output amount, and the fee. An app’s “pending” label can reflect its own wallet or mempool policy and is not, by itself, proof of the network-wide state.
Never paste a seed phrase, private key, or complete wallet backup into a support form, chat, website, or “recovery” tool. A legitimate support agent can investigate a txid without taking control of your wallet.

If the payment is pending or the fee is too low
Why a low-fee transaction can wait
Miners select transactions for blocks, and a lower fee rate can make a transaction less competitive when the mempool is busy. New Bitcoin blocks arrive about every ten minutes on average, but that is a probability, not a deadline. Several blocks can arrive quickly, or the next confirmation can take much longer. No wallet can promise an exact confirmation time.
Option 1: wait when the transaction is otherwise correct
If the destination and amount are correct, waiting may be the safest choice. Keep the txid and monitor it through the same trusted source. Do not create a second payment merely because the first one is pending; you could pay twice if both eventually confirm. Ask the recipient whether it accepts zero-confirmation payments, but treat that as the recipient’s risk decision, not a guarantee that the transaction will confirm.
Option 2: use a wallet-supported fee bump or replacement
Some wallets support Replace-by-Fee (RBF), which creates a replacement transaction with a higher fee. Availability depends on the original transaction, the wallet, and relay rules. Bitcoin Core’s documented bumpfee command replaces an unconfirmed transaction that is in that wallet and opted in to RBF; the replacement pays an additional fee under the applicable rules. The command is not a universal cancellation control, and a replacement is not guaranteed to be accepted or confirmed before the original.
Read the wallet’s current, official help before approving a replacement. Check whether the replacement changes the destination, the change output, or only the fee, and confirm that the wallet still controls the inputs needed to create it. Never install a random “RBF accelerator” or give a third party remote access to your wallet.

Wallet-specific speed-up and cancel screens
Some products expose their own buttons. For example, Bitcoin.com Wallet describes eligible outgoing transactions with choices to speed up, cancel to an address controlled by the user, or wait. Those choices apply to transactions initiated in that product and are an example of an app’s implementation, not a Bitcoin-wide promise. The wallet’s eligibility rules and interface can change.
Can you cancel a Bitcoin transaction?
There is no general-purpose cancel button after a transaction has been broadcast. A wallet may be able to replace an eligible, unconfirmed transaction, but that is a conditional network operation. Once a transaction is confirmed in a block, ordinary wallet software cannot undo it. If you are considering a replacement, inspect the exact outputs before signing so you know where the replacement will send funds.
If bitcoin was sent to the wrong address
When the transaction is still unconfirmed
Immediately check whether the sending wallet offers an RBF or replacement flow. If it does, read the proposed replacement carefully: identify the new destination, amount, fee, and change address before approving it. A replacement can fail relay or confirmation, and the original may still confirm, so it is not a guaranteed undo button. Do not attempt multiple conflicting replacements without understanding which inputs and outputs each one uses.

When the transaction is confirmed
A confirmed Bitcoin payment has no central reversal route. Bitcoin.org’s user guidance states: “A Bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed, it can only be refunded by the person receiving the funds.” Contact the person, business, exchange, or payment service that controls the destination and ask whether it can return the funds. Whether it can help depends on its custody arrangement, technical setup, identity checks, and policy.

If the address is valid but controlled by nobody, the coins may be permanently inaccessible. There is no registry that identifies the owner of every address, and a block explorer cannot recover funds. Be wary of anyone who claims to “unlock” or “reverse” a confirmed payment in exchange for a fee or your wallet secrets.
If the destination was an exchange or payment service
Reach the service through an official support page or app that you locate independently, not through a message or advertisement sent to you. Provide the txid, amount, date, destination address, and the relevant deposit or order reference. Ask whether the service can identify the deposit and what recovery process, if any, it offers. Do not assume that support can recover it or that recovery will be free or automatic.
If a Bitcoin invoice was underpaid or not credited
Reconcile the payment before sending anything else
Open the invoice or order record and compare four items:

- the amount requested and the invoice’s currency or exchange-rate terms;
- the actual amounts in the transaction’s outputs;
- the exact destination address or addresses;
- the transaction’s confirmation count and status.
Make sure an apparent shortfall is not a display or conversion issue. A wallet may show the network fee separately, while an invoice may require a precise amount at a stated rate. Check whether the transaction paid the invoice address at all, rather than assuming that a similar-looking address is the same one.

Contact the merchant with useful evidence
Use the merchant’s independently verified support channel and include the txid, invoice or order number, amount sent, amount requested, date, and any payment-request reference. Ask which of these outcomes its policy permits: crediting the partial payment, accepting a second payment for the outstanding balance, or issuing a refund. Confirm the outstanding amount and destination before sending another transaction.
BIP 70 describes a Bitcoin payment-request protocol, including payment matching and acknowledgments. It does not impose a universal underpayment remedy, and the existence of an invoice does not prove that a merchant implements BIP 70. The merchant’s own matching, confirmation, expiration, and refund rules control the result.
Confirmed does not always mean credited
A transaction can be confirmed on the blockchain while an exchange or merchant account remains uncredited. The service may wait for a particular number of confirmations, require an exact amount, match a destination tag or memo, or process deposits in batches. Give support the txid and ask which requirement is outstanding. Do not send a duplicate payment simply because the account balance has not updated.
How many confirmations are enough?
Confirmation requirements belong to the recipient. Bitcoin.org’s guidance table describes the following reliability levels, not binding rules:

These are Bitcoin.org’s educational recommendations, not a universal merchant standard. Ask the recipient what threshold it uses before paying a time-sensitive invoice.
Protect yourself from address and support scams
Verify the complete address
Before signing a payment, compare the entire destination address with the trusted invoice or recipient source. Do not rely only on the first and last few characters. Bitcoin.org’s scam guidance describes address poisoning: an attacker creates look-alike addresses and places them in transaction history so a user copies the wrong one later. Use the wallet’s address-book verification, QR scanning, or a trusted payment request when available, and recheck the screen after scanning.
Use a small test for high-value transfers
For a large first-time payment, send a small test amount if the recipient can confirm receipt and the extra transaction cost is acceptable. Treat a test as an address check, not as insurance: it does not make a later payment reversible.

Anyone asking for your seed phrase, private key, wallet file, or remote-control access is asking for the ability to take your funds. Legitimate wallet and merchant support can inspect a txid and transaction details without those secrets. Stop communicating, secure the wallet from a trusted device, and report the impersonation through the real provider’s official channel.
