If a bison charges in Yellowstone, leave immediately by walking or running away; do not stand your ground. If it follows, use bear spray while retreating and get behind a tree or vehicle. If you are knocked down, the official guidance does not specify a bison-specific body position or first-aid routine: get out of the animal’s reach as soon as it is safe, find cover, and obtain emergency help.

Why the safest response starts before a charge

Yellowstone National Park’s visitor guidance sets a minimum distance of 25 yards (23 meters) from bison. That is a Yellowstone rule, not a universal standard for every place where bison live, so check the land manager’s instructions for other parks, preserves, ranches, or public lands.

Do not approach a bison for a photograph. If an animal moves inside that distance, back away or turn around and leave the area. This is not a situation in which a closer look is worth testing the animal’s tolerance. Yellowstone says bison can run three times faster than humans and have injured more people in the park than any other animal.

What the distance rule means in practice

  • Start moving away while the bison is still calm; do not wait for it to face you.
  • Keep increasing the separation if the animal continues toward you.
  • Do not close the gap because the animal appears quiet, is lying down, or is beside a road.
  • Never treat a photograph, selfie, or attempt to pass as a reason to approach.

Recognize warning behavior and leave

Yellowstone identifies several behaviors that can signal a bison is responding aggressively or warning you away. Seeing one of these signs is a cue to create distance immediately, not to remain for observation.

Warning signs listed by Yellowstone

  • Bluff charging
  • Head bobbing while staring
  • Pawing the ground
  • Bellowing
  • Raising the tail

Yellowstone Senior Bison Biologist Chris Geremia summarized the response this way: “To be safe around bison, stay at least 25 yards away, move away if they approach, and run away or find cover if they charge.” He also described pawing, snorting, head-bobbing, bellowing, and tail-raising as aggressive displays. The practical decision is simple: once the animal approaches or displays these behaviors, stop trying to continue along your original route and retreat.

If a bison charges

Leave immediately; do not stand your ground

Yellowstone’s bison instruction differs from advice commonly given for some other wildlife. If a bison charges, walk or run away immediately. Do not stand your ground to see whether the animal will stop, and do not assume that remaining still is the correct response for this species.

Choose the safest retreat that increases distance. Keep moving away from the animal rather than toward it, and use available terrain or objects that put something solid between you and the bison. The goal is to get out of the animal’s path and reach cover, not to win a contest of speed.

If the bison follows

Yellowstone says to use bear spray while moving away if the bison follows, then seek cover behind a nearby tree or car. Bear spray is part of the retreat-and-cover instruction; it is not a reason to approach, confront, or wait close to a bison. The guidance does not promise that spray will stop an animal, so continue moving toward cover rather than treating it as a guaranteed solution.

Once behind cover, stay there until the animal has moved away. Do not come back out to film the encounter or retrieve an item while the bison remains nearby. When the immediate danger has passed, notify park staff or emergency services if anyone may be injured.

Do not substitute bear-encounter advice

Instructions for a charging bear are not interchangeable with Yellowstone’s bison guidance. For this specific animal, the park tells visitors to walk or run away and not stand their ground. Applying a different species’ response can delay the retreat that Yellowstone recommends.

If the bison knocks you down

The official Yellowstone material used for this guidance does not provide a bison-specific first-aid procedure or a prescribed body position for a person who has been knocked down. Do not rely on an invented maneuver presented as park policy.

Prioritize separation from the animal

If the bison is still close, your first priority is to get out of its reach when there is a safe opportunity. Follow the same overall direction as a charge response: increase distance, move toward solid cover, and do not remain near the animal to assess yourself. A tree, vehicle, or other substantial object can provide the cover Yellowstone names for a pursued visitor.

If you cannot move immediately, avoid taking an action that brings you closer to the bison. The correct next movement depends on where the animal is and whether a clear route to cover exists; Yellowstone’s published guidance does not establish a universal downed-person technique. As soon as the animal has moved away and you can do so safely, get behind cover and call for appropriate emergency assistance.

Get medical help after the danger passes

A fall, goring, trampling, or impact can cause serious injury even when the skin wound looks small. Once you are clear, contact park emergency services or the local emergency number and follow the dispatcher’s instructions. If another person is with you, have them make the call while you remain in a protected location.

Tell responders where you are, that a bison was involved, whether the animal is still nearby, and what happened in order: charge, knockdown, goring, or other contact. Report any loss of consciousness, difficulty breathing, severe pain, heavy bleeding, or inability to move as clearly as you can. Do not return toward the animal to recover a phone, pack, or camera.

When bison are on or beside a road

For a driving encounter, Yellowstone advises staying in the vehicle, driving slowly, and waiting for the bison to move along. Do not honk at it or drive aggressively toward it. A vehicle gives you separation that a person standing outside does not have, so getting out for a closer view creates an unnecessary exposure.

A safe driving sequence

  1. Remain inside the vehicle.
  2. Slow down and stop if necessary while keeping a safe position.
  3. Wait for the bison to clear the roadway.
  4. Proceed slowly only after the animal has moved on and the route is clear.
  5. Do not use the horn or attempt to force the animal to move.

These directions apply to an animal encountered from a vehicle. If you have already exited and a bison approaches, treat it as a pedestrian encounter: increase distance and leave rather than trying to reach the vehicle by passing close to the animal.

Prepare before entering bison habitat

Preparation is mainly about preventing a close encounter and being able to retreat without hesitation.

  • Learn the applicable land manager’s minimum-distance rule before you start. Yellowstone’s stated minimum is 25 yards (23 meters).
  • Plan viewing stops where you can turn around without walking toward an animal.
  • Keep a clear route to a tree, vehicle, or other cover in mind.
  • Carry bear spray only as a defensive preparation consistent with Yellowstone’s instruction to use it if a bison follows; it is not a wildlife-viewing accessory or a substitute for distance.
  • Keep children and companions from drifting toward an animal while attention is on photography.
  • Know how to contact park staff or emergency services in the area you are visiting.

These steps do not make a close approach safe. They reduce the chance that a surprise approach leaves you with no retreat route.

Yellowstone’s rule is location-specific

The 25-yard distance, the warning signs, the instruction to run or walk away, the bear-spray direction, and the recommendation to use trees or cars for cover come from Yellowstone National Park guidance. Bison also occur outside Yellowstone, and the material available here does not establish that every land manager uses identical wording or distances. Before a trip elsewhere, read that location’s current wildlife-safety rules and obey posted instructions.

What recent Yellowstone incidents show

National Park Service releases illustrate why the distance rule matters, but the reports below are incident counts, not a population-wide risk rate.

Date or period What the National Park Service reported How to interpret it
May 4, 2025 incident; release May 7, 2025 A man was gored after approaching a bison too closely at Lake Village. The release said he sustained minor injuries and received emergency medical treatment. The release called this the first reported bison injury of 2025 as of publication. It also reported two incidents in 2024 and one in 2023.
June 26, 2026 A 12-year-old visitor was injured by a bison near Mud Volcano. The matter was under investigation in the release issued that day. This is a dated example of an injury, not evidence of a trend or a calculated rate.

The consistent lesson in those releases is behavioral: approaching a wild bison removes the buffer that the park tells visitors to maintain.

Common mistakes and the safer alternative

“It looks calm, so I can get closer.”

Calm appearance is not permission to approach. Keep at least 25 yards away in Yellowstone and turn around if the animal comes closer.

“I should stand still and make it stop.”

That is not Yellowstone’s bison instruction. The park says to walk or run away immediately when a bison charges.

“I can outrun it to get a better view.”

Yellowstone says bison can run three times faster than humans. Use your speed to create distance and reach cover, not to remain in the encounter.

“The road is safer because I am close to a vehicle.”

It is safer to remain inside the vehicle, drive slowly, and wait. Getting out, honking, or driving aggressively toward the animal increases the conflict.

“Bear spray means I can hold my position.”

Yellowstone’s instruction is to use bear spray while moving away if the bison follows, then seek cover. Spray does not change the need to retreat.

A compact decision checklist

  1. More than 25 yards away in Yellowstone: stay where you are or increase the distance; never approach for a photo.
  2. The bison approaches: back away or turn around and leave.
  3. Warning behavior appears: treat it as a signal to move away immediately.
  4. The bison charges: walk or run away; do not stand your ground.
  5. The bison follows: use bear spray while retreating and get behind a tree or car.
  6. You are knocked down: once a safe route exists, get out of reach and behind cover; then obtain emergency assistance.
  7. You are driving: stay in the vehicle, slow down, wait, and never honk or drive aggressively at the animal.
