Unexpected cryptocurrency mining on a backup server should be handled as a potential security incident. Activate your incident-response plan, coordinate isolation, preserve volatile evidence when it is safe to do so, investigate how the miner arrived and what it could reach, and protect clean recovery sources before rebuilding. Do not assume the miner is the whole compromise, but do not assume it proves lateral movement or data theft either.
1. Declare the incident and put one person in charge
A backup server is a high-value system. It may hold copies of critical data, service-account credentials, backup catalogs, hypervisor access, or connections to other production systems. An unexpected miner therefore deserves the same disciplined opening response as any other suspected compromise.
Activate the approved response plan
- Notify the incident lead, security operations contact, backup owner, and the system owner.
- Open an incident record and write down the first observation, discovery time, host name, IP addresses, suspected process or alert, and the person who made the discovery.
- Record every action and its exact time. Include commands, isolation changes, account disables, reboots, and people consulted.
- Move sensitive coordination to trusted, out-of-band communications if compromise of organizational messaging is possible.
The CISA, MS-ISAC, NSA, FBI and Joint Ransomware Task Force #StopRansomware Guide recommends coordinated isolation because an intruder may monitor normal communications or react to uncoordinated actions. That guide is ransomware-focused; here, its coordination advice is being applied as a general containment safeguard, not as a claim that a miner is ransomware.

For the first response window, the objective is to stop unauthorized activity and protect other systems without destroying information needed to understand the intrusion. Assign one incident lead to approve disruptive actions. Administrators can then work from a shared plan instead of independently rebooting, deleting files, or changing accounts.

2. Isolate the host without reflexively powering it off
Contain the suspected server and protect adjacent critical systems. Network isolation is usually preferable to an immediate power-off when responders can perform it safely, because volatile memory and live connections may contain evidence.
Coordinate network isolation
- Ask the incident lead and network team to place the host in a controlled quarantine segment or apply an approved block at the relevant switch, firewall, or virtual network layer.
- Block unnecessary inbound and outbound communication while preserving the management path that responders need for evidence collection, if the response design permits it.
- Identify backup proxies, storage targets, domain services, virtualization management, and other systems that communicate with the host. Protect those systems before broad changes are made.
- Keep the server isolated. Do not reconnect it merely to test whether the miner has stopped.
CISA’s response checklist says to determine impacted systems and isolate them immediately. If many systems or subnets appear involved, the incident lead may need to consider a wider network shutdown. That decision should be based on observed scope and operational risk, not on the presence of a miner alone.
When a shutdown may be necessary
If safe network isolation is unavailable, discuss a controlled shutdown with the incident lead. CISA notes that powering down can limit continued spread but can also destroy volatile memory artifacts. Its guidance recommends using a power-down only when temporary network shutdown or disconnection is not possible. Capture memory and other live evidence first when qualified responders and the situation allow it.

3. Preserve evidence and establish scope
Do not treat removal of the mining process as the investigation. Preserve relevant evidence, then determine whether the server was merely abused for computing resources or was also used as a foothold into other systems.

Collect host and network evidence
- Preserve operating-system, authentication, administrative, backup-application, firewall, proxy, endpoint-security, and virtualization logs for the relevant time window.
- Where your capability supports it, capture volatile memory and create a forensic image before remediation. CISA’s crypto-miner advisory specifically recommends collecting and reviewing logs, data, and artifacts and taking memory and forensic-image captures.
- Export copies to protected storage so the investigation does not depend on the suspected host remaining available.
- Document time zones, clock differences, retention gaps, and any logs that were rotated or unavailable.
Review detection systems and centralized telemetry for earlier activity and other affected assets. A miner may be the first visible alert even when the initial access occurred earlier.
Build a scope matrix
Create a list of every system, account, network segment, storage target, and management interface examined. For each item, record the evidence reviewed, the time range, the result, and who approved the conclusion. This prevents responders from assuming that an unalerted system was clean.
Investigate access, privilege and persistence
Look for the initial access vector, privilege changes, newly created or abused accounts, scheduled or service-based persistence, remote-management activity, and connections from the server to other hosts. Review both successful and failed authentication events. Protect credentials associated with backup administration through the approved response process; do not reset them in an uncoordinated way that destroys useful evidence or interrupts containment.

A CISA and FBI advisory describes one federal intrusion in which actors exploited an unpatched VMware Horizon server, installed the XMRig miner, moved laterally to a domain controller, compromised credentials, and installed Ngrok reverse proxies. The advisory is a historical, case-specific account. It demonstrates why investigation must go beyond the mining process; it does not establish that every crypto-miner incident includes lateral movement, credential theft, a domain-controller compromise, or reverse proxies.

Use that example to shape questions: Was an internet-facing or unpatched service involved? Did the suspected host authenticate to high-value systems? Are there unexplained remote sessions, privilege changes, proxy tools, or new persistence mechanisms? Confirm each answer with evidence rather than copying indicators from the federal case into your environment.
5. Protect backup data and recovery sources
The compromised server may be able to delete, alter, encrypt, or reinfect backups. Treat the backup estate as a separate protection problem while the host investigation continues.
Identify what the server could reach
- List backup repositories, object-storage buckets, tape or removable-media workflows, replication targets, hypervisor interfaces, directory services, and monitoring systems reachable from the host.
- Determine which credentials, API keys, certificates, and service accounts were stored on or used by the server.
- Check whether backup jobs, retention settings, catalogs, or restore points changed unexpectedly.
- Place potentially affected recovery sources under controlled access until their integrity is established.
Prefer clean, offline recovery options
CISA recommends offline, encrypted backups, regular integrity and availability testing through disaster-recovery exercises, and golden images for critical systems. Before restoration, select recovery sources that responders have judged suitable and keep the restored environment isolated long enough to check for reinfection. Restore according to critical-service priorities rather than bringing every system online at once.
NIST states in SP 1339, OT Backup Quick Start Guide, published in June 2026: “OT backups are vital for recovery from reliability or cyber incidents.” The guide addresses operational technology backup management, not a universal procedure for every IT backup server. Its emphasis on integrating backups with change management, creating them regularly, testing them, and reviewing them during recovery exercises is nevertheless useful when you design or improve a backup program.

The NIST NCCoE guide, Protecting Data from Ransomware and Other Data Loss Events, is written for managed service providers. Its backup testing and maintenance practices can inform recovery planning, but apply them according to your architecture, contracts, and responsibilities.
6. Choose actions by phase and evidence risk
The following comparison helps the incident lead decide what to do next. The phases are sequential in purpose but may overlap operationally.
| Phase | Primary objective | Main trade-off | Decision owner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Containment | Stop unauthorized activity and limit access to neighboring systems. | Fast isolation reduces exposure but can interrupt backup and production operations. | Incident lead with network and system owners. |
| Evidence and scope | Preserve logs, memory, images, identities, access paths, and affected-asset findings. | Collection takes time while the host remains a risk; destructive cleanup can erase evidence. | Qualified responders under the incident lead. |
| Eradication | Remove persistence and address the entry point across the confirmed scope. | Cleaning a host may leave hidden changes; rebuilding may require more downtime but gives a clearer trust boundary. | Incident lead and technical owners, using scope findings. |
| Recovery | Restore trusted services and clean backup capability without reinfection. | Rapid restoration improves availability; premature reconnection can reintroduce the attacker. | Incident lead with backup, security, and service owners. |
7. Eradicate and recover through a trusted process
Base remediation on confirmed scope
Do not decide between cleaning, rebuilding, and restoring solely because a miner file was deleted. The incident lead and qualified responders should use the evidence to determine whether the operating system, credentials, management plane, or connected systems can still be trusted. Address vulnerable software, exposed services, stolen credentials, persistence, and unauthorized remote access identified during the investigation.
Restore in controlled stages
- Prepare a trusted rebuild, golden image, or recovery procedure that includes current security fixes and required controls.
- Validate the selected backup or image independently of the compromised host.
- Restore the minimum critical service set first, keeping restored systems segmented from unreviewed assets.
- Monitor authentication, administrative actions, network connections, backup jobs, and resource use for recurrence.
- Reconnect normal operations only after the incident lead approves the result.
If the backup-management plane itself may be compromised, recover it as part of the incident rather than using it unquestioned to restore everything else.

8. Know when to bring in outside responders
Escalate to qualified incident-response or digital-forensics support when your team cannot safely capture volatile evidence, determine scope, interpret logs, preserve chain of custody, or operate the environment during containment. CISA’s crypto-miner advisory says organizations may consider third-party incident-response support. Bring specialists in early enough to preserve evidence; waiting until after wholesale cleanup can limit what they can establish.
Follow your organization’s legal, contractual, sector, and jurisdictional reporting procedures. Reporting channels and notification duties depend on current agency guidance and the facts of the incident. Neither a miner process nor the CISA case creates a universal reporting deadline.
9. Close the incident and improve readiness
- Write a final timeline covering discovery, isolation, evidence collection, scope decisions, remediation, restoration, and monitoring.
- Record which systems and accounts were examined and why they were considered recovered or still at risk.
- Document lessons learned and update incident-response, backup, identity, patching, network-segmentation, and recovery procedures.
- Run a restore exercise using offline encrypted backups and verify that the team can recover without reconnecting contaminated systems.
- Confirm that backup credentials, management interfaces, and logging remain protected after normal operations resume.
Use the completed record to close gaps rather than treating the disappearance of mining activity as proof that the incident is over.
