Before updating your Samsung Galaxy phone, back up important data, check the update details for your exact model, and choose a time when you can be without the phone. During installation, you cannot use the device or access its files, and you cannot make calls—including emergency calls. Then use the update option shown in Settings, or consider Smart Switch on a computer if Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance points you there.
Before you start: a preparation checklist
- Make a current backup. Samsung supports backups through a Samsung account, a Google account, or Smart Switch. Choose the route you can complete and verify before starting the update.
- Identify your software and update details. On many Galaxy phones, open Settings > About phone > Software information to see current software information. Update menus and labels can differ by device and carrier.
- Read the update information for your model. Check the phone’s software-update screen and, for a carrier-associated phone, the carrier’s support information. Changes and release timing can vary by model, country, and service provider.
- Plan for the interruption. Start only when you can be without the phone for the installation. Do not begin when you may need to place a call, including an emergency call.
- Meet the connection requirements shown on your phone. Some carriers may require Wi-Fi. If you plan to use Smart Switch, have access to a computer, the application, and a suitable data-capable USB connection.
These are preparation steps, not a guarantee that an update is available for every Galaxy model. Samsung’s U.S. update guide and failure troubleshooting guidance both caution that instructions and availability depend on device, region, and service provider.
Back up your data before installing
An update is not a substitute for a backup. Samsung’s UK backup guide describes Samsung-account and Google-account backups as well as Smart Switch backup to a computer. The best option depends on what you need to preserve and which account or equipment you can access.
Choose a backup route
- Samsung account: Use the backup options available on your phone for your Samsung account. The content categories and menu wording shown can depend on the device and operating system.
- Google account: Use the Google backup controls available on the phone for the Google account associated with it. Confirm that the backup has completed rather than assuming that enabling a setting means the latest backup is finished.
- Smart Switch on a computer: Samsung documents using Smart Switch to back up a phone to a computer. Install the application, connect the phone, and follow its on-screen instructions.
Do not treat a single menu path as universal. Samsung’s UK instructions include steps for Android 12 and note that older Android versions have different menus; screens and options can also vary on newer devices. Follow the instructions displayed on your own phone and in the applicable Samsung support guidance. If you use an account-based backup, make sure you can access that account when you need to restore data.

Check the backup before moving on
Before you install, check that the chosen backup route completed and that you know which account or computer contains the backup. If you have important files that are not covered by the backup options you selected, preserve them separately before proceeding. This is especially important if you later need to use a factory reset as recovery: Samsung warns that a reset can cause data loss and advises backing up important data first.
Check whether an update is right for your device
Galaxy updates are not one identical package released to every phone at once. Samsung says update details can differ by model, country, and service provider. A feature or change mentioned for another Galaxy phone may not apply to yours, and a release date reported for another market or carrier does not establish when your phone will receive it.
Open the software-update area in Settings and review any information shown with the offered update. For a phone tied to a carrier, check that carrier’s support site for release information for your specific model. Samsung notes that carriers develop and release updates, so the carrier’s information can help explain a delay or clarify which release is intended for the device.

Know what is installed and what is being offered
Samsung’s U.S. guide directs users to Settings and identifies the update area as either Software update or System updates, depending on the phone or carrier. It also points to Settings > About phone > Software information for current software details. Your phone may use slightly different wording or place the available check/download control differently; follow what appears on its screen rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same labels.
Use the information on the device to distinguish current software from an available update. If you are checking a carrier release page, match the phone model carefully. The fact that another model has received a release—or that a general announcement exists—does not prove the update is ready for your phone.
Choose an update route
For most owners, the phone’s built-in Settings option is the straightforward route when it offers an update. Smart Switch on a computer is an alternative Samsung documents for some situations; it is not a promise that every update missing from Settings will be available on a computer.

If you use the phone’s Settings menu
With the backup complete and time set aside, open Settings and select Software update or System updates, as shown on your phone. Choose the available check or download option and follow the prompts. Wording such as the download and installation controls can differ by carrier or device. If the phone says Wi-Fi is required, connect to Wi-Fi before continuing.

If you use Smart Switch on a computer
Samsung’s computer-update guidance describes installing Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac, connecting the phone with a USB cable, and following the application’s prompts if an update is available. Keep the phone connected and do not use it until installation finishes. The Gulf-region Smart Switch guidance, last updated September 22, 2026, also advises having adequate computer storage and maintaining a stable USB connection; local instructions and device requirements may differ.
Start with the USB cable included with the phone, as Samsung’s U.S. instructions specify. Some computers may need an adapter. If the included cable is missing or unsuitable, a replacement must support data transfer and fit the phone and computer ports; a charging-only cable will not provide the required data connection. Check connector compatibility before buying anything—an extra cable is not automatically required.

Pick a safe time and let installation finish
Do not start an update just before leaving home, joining an important call, or entering a situation where you may need immediate phone access. Samsung explicitly warns that the phone cannot be used and its files are inaccessible during an update. Calls cannot be made during installation, including emergency calls. The practical requirement is not simply to have spare time: choose a period when losing both the phone and its contents temporarily will not put you at risk or disrupt something important.
Once installation begins, follow the phone’s or Smart Switch’s prompts and leave the device alone until the process completes. If you are using a computer, keep the USB connection in place and do not use the phone during installation. Avoid interrupting the process because you are eager to regain access; wait for the device to indicate it has finished.

A missing update does not by itself mean the phone is broken. Samsung says releases may be distributed in waves, so eligible devices can receive an update at different times. Availability may also depend on the original carrier, the SIM, and connection requirements.

- Check the device’s update menu again later. A release distributed in waves may not appear for every phone at once.
- Connect to Wi-Fi if required. Samsung says some carriers require Wi-Fi for checking or downloading an update.
- Check with the original carrier. This is particularly relevant for a carrier-associated phone because carriers develop and release updates, and their support pages may publish model-specific release information.
- If the phone is SIM-unlocked, consider the original-carrier SIM requirement. Samsung notes that some SIM-unlocked phones may need a SIM from the original carrier to receive an update.
- Check Smart Switch if appropriate. Samsung suggests trying Smart Switch on a PC in some update troubleshooting situations. It is an alternative to check, not a guarantee that the update is offered there.
When contacting a carrier or Samsung support, have the exact model and the software information shown in Settings > About phone > Software information available. That helps keep the question specific to the phone rather than relying on a release schedule for a different model or region.
If downloading or installing fails
“Insufficient storage” appears
Free the amount of storage indicated by the phone’s message, then retry. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance specifically advises freeing the space requested. Do not assume that deleting a particular fixed amount will solve every storage warning; use the amount shown on your device.
The download was interrupted
If the download stops before completion, check the notification for an option to resume it. Samsung says an incomplete download may be resumed from its notification. If that option is not shown, return to the update screen and follow the available prompts.
The download keeps failing
For persistent download problems, Samsung identifies Smart Switch as an alternative to try when available. Use the computer method described above, keeping the device connected and unused through installation. If the computer does not recognize the phone, Samsung’s Smart Switch troubleshooting guidance covers connection problems; verify the cable and connection are stable before concluding that the update itself is the cause.
The phone will not boot normally after a failed update
Samsung says service may be required to reflash a device that no longer boots normally after a failed update. This is different from a routine download interruption, so do not keep repeating steps that assume the phone can start normally. Before using a factory reset as an emergency recovery measure, back up important data if possible: a reset can erase data, and Samsung explicitly cautions that it is not responsible for data loss.
Samsung support guidance and regional differences
Samsung’s U.S. guide, “How to update your Galaxy phone or tablet,” describes update menus, Smart Switch on Windows or Mac, interrupted updates, and backup before a factory reset. Samsung’s U.S. article “Software update failed on Samsung device” discusses carrier release information, Wi-Fi, staged availability, storage warnings, and Smart Switch troubleshooting. For backup choices, Samsung UK’s “How to back up Samsung phone data,” updated October 6, 2026, covers Samsung-account, Google-account, Smart Switch, and remote backup options. The Smart Switch computer instructions cited here are from Samsung Gulf guidance last updated September 22, 2026. These pages are regional support documents, not a guarantee that every label or procedure applies identically in every country; the phone’s own prompts and local carrier instructions take precedence.
