Before you finish An Unheard Farewell in Valor Mortis, stop at the elevator and investigate the hidden ledge beneath it. Destroy the two glowing Nephtoglobin growths, call the lift, jump off halfway onto the opposite ledge, burn through the web-like barrier with fire transmutation, defeat the elite soldier, and take the scouts’ letter. Only then return to the Adjutant Sous-Officier near the Demolished Path lantern and complete the dialogue.
That detour determines which follow-up you see after resting. Truth and lying both award the Sleight of Hand Amber, but truth leads to extra catalysts while lying causes the Adjutant’s corpse to appear in the scouts’ cave and provides a Remnant’s Return.
Why you should delay the final conversation
The obvious route through the level takes you upward through the elevator area, but the missing scouts are not found on that main path. Their objective is hidden beneath the elevator route, on a ledge that is easy to pass if you simply ride the lift to the top. Completing the conversation with the Adjutant before searching there can make the quest feel unfinished because the important notes and branch-specific follow-up are tied to this secret area.
The detour is available during the same level section. You need the pistol, access to the upper elevator route, the ability to use fire transmutation, and enough combat readiness for a tough soldier or elite miniboss. Enemy labels differ between guides, but the encounter is the same required fight.

Start the quest correctly
An Unheard Farewell begins in the Valley of Ashes. Speak with the Adjutant Sous-Officier after the first Grenadier and agree to help. This establishes the quest before you advance through the level.
- Find the Adjutant Sous-Officier in the Valley of Ashes.
- Speak to him after the first Grenadier encounter.
- Accept the request rather than leaving the conversation unresolved.
- Continue through the level until you obtain the pistol and reach the upper part of the elevator route.
If you have already moved beyond this opening, the quest is not missable. The relevant areas can be revisited, so you can return to the Valley of Ashes and continue the investigation later.

How to find the hidden scouts’ cave
1. Reach the upper elevator area
Follow the normal level route after accepting the quest. Obtain the pistol as you progress and continue until you reach the upper elevator section. The hidden objective is not beside the first obvious path upward, so do not assume that reaching the top automatically completes the search.
2. Destroy the two Nephtoglobin growths
At the upper elevator area, look for two glowing Nephtoglobin growths. Shoot both of them. They are the trigger that makes the elevator usable for the route to the scouts’ ledge; destroying only one does not open the necessary opportunity.

3. Pull the lever and call the lift
After the two growths are destroyed, use the lever to call the elevator. Position yourself so you can watch the opposite side of the shaft while the platform moves. The ledge you need is not the destination at the top.
4. Jump off halfway
Ride the elevator and leave it approximately halfway up. Jump onto the ledge opposite the route you used on the initial ascent. If you stay aboard until the normal endpoint, you pass the hidden entrance and will need to call the lift again.
Look for a wall or opening covered by a web-like, gold-vine growth. This is the visual clue that you are on the correct ledge. The scouts’ area is effectively a mid-elevator secret rather than a room along the obvious upward route.
5. Burn the barrier with fire transmutation
Use fire transmutation on the web-like or gold-vine barrier. The barrier does not open through ordinary attacks; fire transmutation is the required interaction. Once it burns away, proceed into the concealed area.
6. Defeat the elite soldier and collect the letter
An unusually tough soldier, also described as an elite soldier or miniboss, guards the objective. Defeat the enemy, then search the area for the scouts’ notes. PowerPyx gives the item’s in-game title as “Letter to all Commanding Officers of the Line Infranty.” Keep that spelling when looking for it in your inventory or objective list.

Collecting the notes is the step that resolves the missing-scouts portion of the quest. If the letter is not present, check that you burned the correct barrier and defeated the guard inside rather than merely passing the elevator ledge.

Return to the Adjutant and finish the quest
Continue through the level until you can return to the Adjutant Sous-Officier near the Demolished Path lantern. Speak with him after collecting the letter. The conversation presents a choice: tell him the truth or lie about what happened to the scouts.
Both choices award the same immediate item, so you do not lose the Sleight of Hand Amber by selecting one branch. The difference appears after you rest and then follow up with the Adjutant or inspect the scouts’ cave.

What happens if you tell the truth?
The truth branch gives the Sleight of Hand Amber during the conversation. Rest, then speak to the Adjutant again to receive additional catalysts. Choose this route if the extra catalysts are more useful to your current build than a recovery item.
What happens if you lie?
The lie branch also gives the Sleight of Hand Amber immediately. After you rest, the Adjutant’s corpse appears in the scouts’ cave. Loot it to obtain a Remnant’s Return.

Remnant’s Return is a one-use item that lets you reclaim catalysts dropped on death. It is therefore a practical recovery option for a run in which retrieving lost catalysts matters more than receiving the truth branch’s additional catalysts.
Which choice is better?
There is no difference in the Amber reward. Decide according to the second reward and the story consequence: truth favors additional catalysts, while lying grants Remnant’s Return after the rest and changes the Adjutant’s immediate fate. The choice is not a way to obtain a different Amber; both branches provide the same Sleight of Hand Amber.
Rewards and completion tracking
PowerPyx lists Sleight of Hand as the quest reward. The quest also contributes to the Aggressive Reconnaissance bronze trophy, so completing the conversation after collecting the letter matters for trophy progress.
The branch-specific follow-up requires resting. If you choose truth, rest and speak to the Adjutant again for the catalysts. If you choose lie, rest before returning to the scouts’ cave to look for the Remnant’s Return and the corpse event. Checking immediately without resting can make it appear that the branch did not trigger.
Common mistakes and fixes
You rode the elevator all the way up
The hidden ledge is reached by jumping off about halfway, not by exiting at the normal top destination. Call the lift again after destroying the growths and repeat the ride, watching the opposite side for the ledge.

The elevator will not reach the correct route
Return to the upper elevator area and confirm that both glowing Nephtoglobin growths were shot. The lever and the required lift position depend on destroying both growths.
You cannot open the vine-covered wall
Use fire transmutation on the web-like or gold-vine barrier. Ordinary attacks are not the intended solution. If the ability does not connect, move close enough to target the growth covering the passage rather than the surrounding rock.
You found the cave but no letter
Defeat the tough soldier inside and search the area afterward. The notes are collected as the letter titled “Letter to all Commanding Officers of the Line Infranty.” Leaving before the guard is defeated does not complete the objective.

The follow-up reward is missing
Rest after choosing truth or lie, then perform the branch’s follow-up action. Truth requires another conversation with the Adjutant; lying requires checking the scouts’ cave for the corpse and item.
You already advanced past the area
Return to the earlier locations. The side quest is not missable according to the available walkthrough guidance, because the areas can be revisited. Re-run the elevator sequence and collect the letter before resolving the final dialogue.
