Stop using the injectable tanning product and do not take another dose. Contact a clinician or your local poison-information service promptly, even if you currently feel well. Products sold as melanotan or “tan jabs” may be unauthorized, contaminated, inaccurately labeled, or mixed at an unknown strength, so individualized advice matters. Call your local emergency number or go to an emergency department immediately for severe breathing trouble, a seizure, collapse, loss of consciousness, or signs of a severe allergic reaction.
What should I do after a tanning injection?
Use this sequence after an injectable tanning peptide, including a product sold as Melanotan II:
- Stop the product now. Do not inject another dose or use a nasal version while deciding what to do. Scottish NHS guidance says people using Melanotan II or other nasal or injection tanning products should stop immediately.
- Get case-specific advice. Contact a doctor, urgent-care service, or your local poison-information centre. Tell the service that you injected an unapproved or possibly unapproved tanning peptide and ask what assessment is needed.
- Prepare the exposure details. Write down the product name, how much you used if known, when you used it, where and how it was injected, your symptoms, and any medicines, recreational drugs, alcohol, or other substances taken around the same time.
- Preserve the evidence safely. Keep the vial, box, label, preparation instructions, and a photograph of the product for the care team. Do not handle a leaking, broken, or contaminated container unnecessarily.
- Escalate immediately for danger signs. Use emergency services rather than waiting for a routine appointment if any severe symptoms described below are present.
Do not try to identify the peptide, calculate a “safe” corrective dose, or treat a suspected poisoning at home. The contents and concentration may not match the label, and a person cannot reliably rule out a serious reaction by looking at the injection site or by waiting for a tan to develop.

When should I go to the emergency department?
Call the emergency number where you are or go to emergency care for any of these symptoms:

- A seizure.
- Collapse, loss of consciousness, or inability to stay awake.
- Sudden severe dizziness or confusion, especially if it is progressing or accompanied by breathing problems.
These signs can represent a life-threatening emergency, including anaphylaxis, but they do not establish the exact cause. Do not wait for a rash, a fever, or another symptom to appear before seeking emergency help. If you are with someone who has collapsed or cannot breathe normally, call emergency services and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.
Which symptoms need urgent medical advice?
Contact a clinician or poison-information service promptly for side effects, even when they initially seem mild. Scottish NHS guidance lists nausea, drowsiness, vomiting, and loss of appetite as possible effects and warns that more severe reactions can occur. NSW Health advises urgent attention for concerning symptoms after unapproved peptide use, including the following:

This list is for escalation, not self-diagnosis. A person without these symptoms is not automatically safe: poisoning symptoms can begin hours or days after exposure. NHS poisoning guidance recommends prompt medical advice whenever poisoning is possible.

What if I feel fine after the injection?
Feeling normal immediately after an injection does not prove that the product was harmless. Delayed symptoms are possible, and an unapproved vial may contain a different substance, concentration, or contaminant from what the label suggests. Contact a clinician or poison service while you are well enough to provide accurate details, and explain that you currently have no symptoms. Follow the monitoring and follow-up plan they give you rather than deciding on your own that no assessment is needed.
Keep a written record of the injection time and any later changes in breathing, alertness, skin color, urine color, temperature, abdominal symptoms, or the injection site. If a new severe symptom appears, use emergency services immediately; do not wait for a scheduled callback.
What information should I give the clinician or poison centre?
Clear exposure information helps the service judge urgency and arrange the right tests or observation. Have these details ready:

- The exact name printed on the vial, website, or packaging, including “Melanotan,” “Melanotan II,” or another peptide name.
- The amount injected, the volume prepared, and the time of injection. If you do not know a figure, say that rather than estimating.
- The route and site of injection and whether the solution was reconstituted, diluted, or mixed with anything.
- Every symptom, when it began, and whether it is improving, stable, or worsening.
- Prescription medicines, over-the-counter products, supplements, alcohol, or recreational drugs used recently.
- Whether anyone else used the same vial, syringe, needle, or other injection equipment.
- Your country or region and a way for the service to contact you if follow-up is required.
Take the container and packaging to a clinic if doing so is safe. A photograph of the label can still help when the vial cannot be transported. Do not delay emergency treatment while searching for paperwork.

Tell the clinician or poison-information service promptly if a needle, syringe, preparation container, or other injection equipment was shared. Cancer Research UK advises speaking with a GP after sharing needles. Scottish NHS guidance identifies injection-related risks that include hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, nerve damage, and blood infection.
Do not try to choose your own testing schedule or preventive medicines. A clinician will decide which assessments and prevention steps are appropriate based on the equipment used, the timing, and the people involved. Give an honest account even if the sharing was brief or the needle looked clean; visual inspection cannot establish that equipment was safe.

Should I use sunlight or a sunbed after a tanning peptide?
No. Do not take another tanning injection and do not treat the resulting color as protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Scottish NHS information says Melanotan II may produce tanning when skin is exposed to UV from sunlight or sunbeds, but a tan is not a safety barrier. FDA guidance states that there is no safe tan and that tanning increases skin-cancer risk.
Stay out of sunbeds and avoid deliberate tanning while you arrange medical advice. Use ordinary sun-protection measures recommended for your location, such as clothing, shade, and sunscreen, without assuming they eliminate risk. If you also have a severe sunburn, FDA guidance says it should be treated as a medical emergency and examined by a doctor right away.

Authorization depends on the country and the specific product. Scottish NHS describes Melanotan II tanning sprays and injections in the UK as unauthorized, not tested, and of unknown contents. Cancer Research UK says melanotan products have not been tested for safety, quality, or effectiveness and could contain harmful chemicals that are not listed on the label. Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) also warns of serious health risks from melanotan-containing tanning products.

Those statements do not establish the status of every vial in every country, nor do they diagnose what happened to one person. They explain why a clinician needs the actual packaging and exposure history instead of relying on a product advertisement or an assumed dose. Do not share leftover product with anyone else, and do not use a different brand or route as a substitute.
Who do I call about a peptide injection?
Use the medical system where you are physically located:
- United Kingdom: Scottish NHS advice applies to UK readers. Contact a doctor or the appropriate urgent medical service; use emergency services for life-threatening symptoms.
- New South Wales, Australia: NSW Health lists the NSW Poisons Information Centre at 13 11 26, available 24 hours.
- Elsewhere: Use your country’s poison centre, urgent medical service, or emergency number. Poison-centre numbers and referral pathways are not universal, so do not assume a number from another country will work.
If you cannot reach a poison service quickly and symptoms are worsening, contact emergency services or attend an emergency department. When calling, say that the exposure involved an injectable tanning peptide and give the time, amount if known, symptoms, and product information.
