After a suspected ransomware attack, do not start by wiping computers or negotiating with the attacker. Activate your approved incident-response plan, isolate affected systems without destroying volatile evidence, bring in qualified responders and required reporting contacts, and recover only from trusted backups on a clean network. The order matters: hurried shutdowns or an uncoordinated recovery can erase evidence, spread the intrusion, or reinfect restored systems.

The first hour: activate the plan and control communications

Treat a ransomware note, mass file encryption, disabled security tools, or a sudden loss of access as a potential security incident until responders establish otherwise. Use the organization’s approved incident-response and communications plans rather than improvising from a single administrator account.

Assign an incident lead

Notify the internal security or IT response lead and the stakeholders named in the plan. Depending on your environment, that group can include executive leadership, legal and privacy advisers, an incident-response or digital-forensics provider, a managed security provider, and a cyber-insurance contact. The response lead should maintain a timeline, decision log, system list, and contact record.

Use out-of-band communications whenever practical: phone calls, an unaffected messaging system, or another channel that is not dependent on the organization’s potentially compromised identity and email infrastructure. Attackers may monitor internal activity. Do not announce containment plans in a channel that could be under their control.

Set immediate priorities

  • Protect people and safety-critical operations first.
  • Stop unauthorized access and lateral movement.
  • Preserve evidence needed to determine what happened and what data may have been accessed.
  • Keep a reliable record of actions, times, affected assets, and decisions.

The CISA-led #StopRansomware Guide response checklist, developed with the FBI, NSA, and MS-ISAC and revised October 19, 2023, states: “Determine which systems were impacted, and immediately isolate them.”

Identify affected assets before isolation becomes harder

Build a working list of suspected systems from the ransom note, encryption extensions, endpoint alerts, authentication anomalies, unusual administrative activity, and reports from users. Mark each item as confirmed, suspected, or not yet assessed. Include servers, workstations, virtual machines, storage, network appliances, cloud workloads, identity systems, backup infrastructure, and third-party connections.

Choose host or network-level isolation

Situation Preferred containment approach Why
A small number of clearly identified devices are affected Disconnect Ethernet or remove the devices from Wi-Fi; use endpoint isolation controls if responders trust them. It limits disruption while leaving unaffected systems available for business and investigation.
Several devices, servers, or subnets show signs of compromise Consider switch-level or segment-level network isolation, coordinated by the network team. Endpoint-by-endpoint disconnection can miss systems and allow lateral movement.
Cloud resources are involved Restrict network paths and identity access according to the cloud incident plan; take volume snapshots for point-in-time forensic review. A snapshot preserves a state for analysis while access and credentials are controlled.

Before making a broad change, identify dependencies such as domain services, clinical or industrial controls, emergency communications, and backup links. Containment should stop attacker movement without creating an avoidable safety incident. If multiple network segments appear compromised, taking the network offline at the switch level may be necessary. If that is not immediately feasible, disconnect affected devices from Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

Coordinate every isolation action

Record the device name, owner, location, connection, time, person who performed the action, and observed symptoms. Tell the incident lead before disabling shared services, firewall rules, identity providers, or remote-access gateways. Keep a small, deliberately separated management path for responders only if it can be secured; do not leave ordinary user access operating merely for convenience.

Should you turn off a computer infected with ransomware?

Usually, no. CISA warns that powering down can destroy infection artifacts and evidence held in volatile memory. Disconnect the host from the network or temporarily take the relevant network offline first. Power down only when network disconnection or a temporary network shutdown is not possible, or when a qualified responder directs it for safety or containment.

Action Evidence impact Use when
Disconnect network cable or Wi-Fi Often preserves live memory and running-process information while blocking communication. The host can be isolated quickly and safely.
Temporarily disable a switch port or network segment Preserves powered-on state for multiple systems, but may disrupt dependent services. Several systems or subnets may be affected.
Power off Can remove memory-resident malware, encryption keys, running processes, and other volatile artifacts. Disconnection is impossible or a responder determines that shutdown is necessary.

Do not reboot “to see whether it fixes the problem,” run cleanup utilities, delete ransom notes, or begin reimaging before evidence decisions are made. Those actions can overwrite timestamps, destroy memory-resident clues, and make the attack timeline harder to reconstruct.

Preserve volatile evidence before making destructive changes

Evidence disappears at different rates. CISA’s checklist says: “Preserve evidence that is highly volatile in nature—or limited in retention—to prevent loss or tampering (e.g., system memory, Windows Security logs, data in firewall log buffers).” Preserve what is likely to roll over or vanish first, and coordinate collection with qualified incident responders whenever available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

High-priority evidence

  • System memory: A memory capture can contain running processes, injected code, network connections, credentials, encryption keys, and command history that will be lost at shutdown.
  • Security and authentication logs: Export Windows Security logs and equivalent identity-provider, Linux, database, and application logs before short retention periods overwrite them.
  • Firewall and network-device buffers: Save connection records, blocked traffic, VPN activity, DNS data, and configuration state from devices with limited local storage.
  • System images: Acquire forensic images or snapshots of a representative sample of affected devices, preserving the original media and recording hashes where your response team supports that process.
  • Malware and indicators: Preserve precursor malware samples, ransom notes, suspicious executables, command-and-control addresses, domains, hashes, registry entries, scheduled tasks, and unusual accounts.
  • Cloud snapshots: For affected cloud volumes, take point-in-time snapshots before remediation changes alter the state.

Collect without contaminating the scene

Use trusted, responder-approved tools from clean media. Do not copy suspicious files to an ordinary employee laptop, open encrypted archives, or upload samples to an unapproved public service. Keep original evidence read-only where possible, store working copies separately, and record who collected each item, when, from which asset, and how it was transferred.

If your organization lacks forensic capability, preserve the powered-on state and network isolation while contacting a qualified incident-response provider. Do not delay urgent containment while waiting for a perfect collection plan; stopping spread and preserving the most volatile evidence are concurrent objectives.

Report the incident and manage notification duties

Follow the communications plan for internal escalation and external reporting. The CISA checklist identifies CISA, a local FBI field office, FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), and a local U.S. Secret Service field office as reporting or assistance options. Reporting can help investigators connect related attacks and may provide technical assistance, but it does not replace your own containment and recovery work.

Coordinate legal and privacy review

Ransomware can involve data theft as well as encryption. Determine whether personal, health, financial, confidential business, or regulated data may have been accessed or exfiltrated. Involve the organization’s legal and privacy advisers, insurance contact, and relevant contractual teams. Notification deadlines and recipients vary by jurisdiction, sector, data type, and contract; there is no single universal ransomware deadline. Base notices on verified facts and the requirements that apply to your organization.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep messages factual and controlled

  • State what is confirmed, what is suspected, and what remains unknown.
  • Use a single incident lead or communications owner for updates.
  • Do not publish technical details that could help the attacker while systems remain exposed.
  • Preserve ransom notes, wallet addresses, chat records, and payment demands as evidence, even if the organization does not intend to pay.

Recover only on a clean network

Recovery is not simply restoring files. It is rebuilding trustworthy services without reconnecting an attacker’s persistence. CISA recommends restoring from offline, encrypted backups according to critical-service priorities and ensuring that only clean systems connect to the recovery environment.

Validate backups before using them

  • Confirm the backup was created before the attacker’s activity and was not altered or encrypted.
  • Check that offline or otherwise isolated copies remain inaccessible to compromised credentials.
  • Scan and inspect restoration sources using the response team’s approved process.
  • Test restoration of representative systems and data before committing to a broad rebuild.

Build a clean recovery network

Use a recovery VLAN or separate network with controlled routing, fresh administrative credentials, hardened management systems, and monitored access. CISA specifically warns that systems added to a recovery VLAN should be clean. Do not connect a restored server to the production network merely to test it. Establish the required identity, DNS, time, logging, endpoint protection, and backup services in the clean environment first.

Restore by critical-service dependency

Recovery decision Questions to answer
Service priority Which functions are safety-critical, legally required, revenue-critical, or needed to restore other systems?
Dependency order Do identity, DNS, networking, databases, storage, or applications need to be restored first?
Trust decision Can the system be validated as clean, or must it be rebuilt from known-good media?
Validation gate Have credentials been rotated, persistence checked, logs enabled, and security monitoring confirmed before production connection?

Rebuild systems that cannot be trusted rather than restoring an image with unknown persistence. Reset privileged credentials, revoke stolen tokens and sessions, remove unauthorized accounts and scheduled tasks, patch exploited software, and verify that remote-access paths are controlled. Connect each restored system only after the incident lead approves its checks.

Balance the four decisions that cause most mistakes

Host isolation versus network isolation

Host-level disconnection is practical when only a few systems are affected and the list is reliable. Switch-level isolation is safer when several systems or subnets may be compromised, because it reduces the chance of missing a hidden or dormant host. The trade-off is service disruption, so map critical dependencies before cutting a segment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Live evidence versus stopping spread

A powered-on, disconnected host generally preserves more volatile evidence than a powered-off host. However, preserving one machine is not worth allowing active encryption or lateral movement across the organization. Isolate first, then collect memory and logs with responder guidance; power down only when disconnection is not possible or safety requires it.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Containment versus investigation readiness

Containment and forensics must be coordinated, not sequenced as competing projects. A responder may ask you to leave a particular host powered on while the network team blocks its routes. Conversely, a rapidly spreading incident may require immediate segment shutdown before a full image can be acquired. Record the reason for each compromise between speed and evidence.

Recovery speed versus reinfection risk

Restoring the most visible service first can recreate the attacker’s foothold. Prioritize critical services, but restore them in a clean environment, from trusted backups, with fresh credentials and monitoring. A slower validated rebuild is preferable to repeatedly restoring compromised systems.

After services return: verify, document, and improve

Monitor restored systems for renewed encryption, suspicious authentication, unexpected outbound connections, disabled security controls, and changes to privileged groups. Keep enhanced logging and alerting in place while the incident remains open. Preserve the incident timeline, evidence inventory, restoration decisions, and communications.

When operations stabilize, conduct a documented lessons-learned review. Identify the initial access path, control failures, detection gaps, backup weaknesses, and decisions that delayed containment. Update the incident-response and communications plans, recovery priorities, contact lists, network diagrams, backup protections, and exercises. NIST’s SP 800-61 Rev. 3, Incident Response Recommendations and Considerations for Cybersecurity Risk Management: A CSF 2.0 Community Profile was finalized April 3, 2025; NIST’s IR 8374 Rev. 1, Ransomware Risk Management: A Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 Community Profile was finalized June 11, 2026. NIST’s SP 1800-26, Data Integrity: Detecting and Responding to Ransomware and Other Destructive Events (2020) describes enterprise approaches for detection, mitigation, containment, and response.

A concise action checklist

  1. Activate the approved incident-response and communications plans.
  2. Move coordination to trusted out-of-band channels.
  3. Identify suspected systems, accounts, segments, cloud resources, and backups.
  4. Isolate affected hosts or segments immediately; use switch-level isolation when spread is broad.
  5. Do not power down unless disconnection or temporary network shutdown is impossible or responders direct it.
  6. Capture volatile memory and export short-retention security, authentication, firewall, and network logs.
  7. Preserve images, snapshots, malware samples, ransom notes, and indicators with chain-of-custody records.
  8. Contact qualified responders, CISA, the FBI, IC3, or the local U.S. Secret Service field office as appropriate.
  9. Ask legal and privacy advisers to assess data exposure and jurisdiction-specific notifications.
  10. Restore critical services only on a clean, controlled network from offline, encrypted, validated backups.
  11. Rotate credentials, remove persistence, monitor restored systems, and document lessons learned.
