Choose the switch and network adapter as one workload-matched fabric, not as separate line items. Start by separating distributed-training traffic from storage, user, and management traffic; select an RDMA transport that every endpoint and software layer supports; size ports, uplinks, oversubscription, and failure domains; then validate optics, firmware, congestion controls, and operations. A 400Gb/s port or a nominally nonblocking switch does not, by itself, guarantee application performance.

Start with the traffic your AI cluster must carry

AI infrastructure normally has several traffic roles, and they should not be sized as though they were one network. Distributed training creates east-west traffic among GPU servers, often in synchronized collectives where many hosts send at once. Storage reads and writes, user access, inference requests, and data ingestion are north-south flows. Out-of-band (OOB) management carries provisioning, monitoring, and recovery traffic. NVIDIA’s HGX terminology calls these compute (east-west) and customer/storage (north-south) networks; a Cisco cluster reference separately identifies backend, frontend/storage, and OOB management roles.

Those roles can be separate physical fabrics or logically isolated networks, depending on security, performance, and failure-domain requirements. Document the intended arrangement before choosing hardware:

  • List server models, accelerator count per server, available PCIe slots, and the host-bus generation.
  • Describe whether the dominant workload is multi-node training, distributed inference, parameter serving, or mixed jobs.
  • Record the number of simultaneous jobs and whether they share a fabric.
  • Map storage paths, front-end or tenant traffic, and OOB management requirements.
  • Define the failure you must survive: a link, adapter, leaf switch, spine switch, power domain, or an entire rack.

This inventory determines whether you need rail-optimized paths, multiple network planes, strict isolation, or simply a high-bandwidth fabric with adequate redundancy.

Choose InfiniBand or Ethernet with RoCEv2 from the whole-stack view

InfiniBand and Ethernet with RoCEv2 can both provide RDMA for accelerator communication. The correct choice depends on supported hardware, software, and operational capability rather than a universal claim that one transport is faster. Verify the exact adapter model, switch family, server validation, operating system, kernel and driver versions, RDMA framework, and collective-communications software together.

Check adapter-family support instead of generalizing by brand

NVIDIA’s current Network Operator platform-support table lists different capabilities by model. ConnectX-6 is listed to 200 Gb/s, ConnectX-7 to 400 Gb/s, and ConnectX-8 and ConnectX-9 to 800 Gb/s. The table identifies Ethernet, InfiniBand, IB RDMA, and RoCE support for the relevant families, but support is model-specific; one SKU’s capability must not be applied to every adapter in the family. BlueField-3 DPU entries are listed at 200 Gb/s, while BlueField-3 SuperNIC entries are listed at 400 Gb/s, with RoCE and NIC-mode details specified separately.

Other vendors show the same pattern: Intel’s RDMA documentation varies by adapter model. Treat a product-family name as a starting point and obtain the exact part-number support matrix for the server and operating system you will deploy.

Validate the accelerator and software path

Hardware capability is not proof of a supported configuration. Confirm that the accelerator platform, server OEM, adapter firmware, switch firmware, OS and kernel, and RDMA drivers are validated together. Also check your framework’s collective-communications requirements and any container integration. NVIDIA’s Kubernetes support documentation, for example, identifies a specific GPU Operator prerequisite for GPUDirect RDMA use cases. That kind of prerequisite can determine whether direct GPU-to-network transfers work as intended.

For InfiniBand, verify the required fabric-management components and host drivers. For RoCEv2, verify that endpoint settings, VLAN or priority markings, and switch QoS policy are consistent. Keep a versioned compatibility record so that a firmware upgrade does not silently remove support for a previously validated combination.

Size ports, uplinks, and topology for the traffic pattern

Advertised line rate is only one sizing input. Calculate host and accelerator port count, aggregate traffic, bisection capacity, oversubscription, path diversity, and growth headroom. Then choose leaf and spine port counts that meet those declared assumptions.

Answer “How many 400GbE ports per GPU?” with a design calculation

There is no universal port-per-GPU rule. The answer changes with accelerator generation, collective pattern, number of nodes per job, rail design, and whether storage or tenant traffic shares the fabric. A vendor reference for an HGX B300 system describes eight Blackwell GPUs with eight ConnectX-8 SuperNICs, providing 800 Gb/s per GPU as two 400 Gb/s Ethernet paths. The same reference describes a single-plane 400 Gb/s alternative that lowers bandwidth and infrastructure cost in that specific design.

For that B300 multi-node guidance, NVIDIA lists minimum total compute-network bandwidth of 400 GB/s, implemented as eight 400 Gb/s Ethernet NICs, and recommended bandwidth of 800 GB/s, implemented as sixteen 400 Gb/s Ethernet NICs using breakout. These are architecture recommendations for that platform, not a universal requirement for every GPU cluster. Note the units: eight 400 Gb/s links equal 3,200 Gb/s, or 400 GB/s before protocol overhead.

Declare oversubscription and failure assumptions

A nonblocking port count does not eliminate congestion. Synchronized collectives can create incast, where many senders target one receiver or queue at the same time. Cisco’s AI-cluster guidance therefore combines a nonblocking design with explicit congestion management. State whether your target is 1:1 (nonblocking), a defined oversubscription ratio, or a cost-optimized ratio that accepts lower worst-case throughput. Also document how many independent paths remain after a link or switch failure.

Use reference architectures as examples, not guarantees

HGX B300 minimum compute bandwidth 400 GB/s using eight 400 Gb/s Ethernet NICs Architecture guidance for the stated multi-node deployment, not a general per-GPU rule.
HGX B300 recommended compute bandwidth 800 GB/s using sixteen 400 Gb/s Ethernet NICs with breakout Higher-bandwidth option in the same reference design; verify port, breakout, and optics support.

Engineer RoCE congestion control end to end

RoCEv2 uses Ethernet, but an ordinary Ethernet configuration is not automatically ready for loss-sensitive RDMA traffic. Validate every hop from the adapter to the receiving adapter.

Confirm marking, queues, and pause behavior

Cisco’s QoS guidance describes traffic marking and classification, queueing, Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN), Priority Flow Control (PFC), and prioritization of congestion-notification traffic. PFC is a per-priority link-layer pause mechanism; enabling it without a coherent policy can spread congestion or create head-of-line blocking. Confirm that endpoint priorities, VLAN or DSCP markings, switch classifiers, queue mappings, ECN behavior, and PFC settings agree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure the behavior that affects jobs

Check queue occupancy, ECN marks, PFC events, retransmissions, drops, link utilization, and tail latency during workload-representative collectives. Validate path symmetry or the behavior of adaptive routing, and ensure telemetry reaches the operators who will troubleshoot it. Thresholds and command syntax are platform- and software-version-specific, so use the switch and adapter documentation for the exact release instead of copying values from another platform.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Run tests with the same message sizes, job placement, concurrency, and storage overlap expected in production. A fabric that looks healthy under a bandwidth test can still show pause storms or long tails when all GPUs synchronize.

Make the physical layer part of compatibility

Every adapter port must match the switch port, cage, transceiver or cable, lane configuration, reach, and breakout mode. Verify switch-side and adapter-side connector formats, supported optical modules, fiber type, copper or active-cable reach, lane count, and whether a 400 Gb/s port is being split into 2 × 200, 4 × 100, or another supported arrangement. Confirm firmware support for the selected optics and keep spare parts that are approved for the exact platform.

NVIDIA’s connector overview distinguishes switch-side and adapter-side formats and notes generation-specific behavior. An interconnect guide surfaced for older products is explicitly deprecated, so use current interconnect specifications and compatibility lists when creating a bill of materials. Do not assume that two connectors with the same nominal speed or shape are interchangeable.

Compare candidate designs on effective service, not headline speed

Decision axis Questions to answer before purchase
Transport and interoperability Are InfiniBand or RoCEv2 supported by the exact NIC, switches, drivers, OS, and collective software?
Effective bandwidth What bisection bandwidth reaches each accelerator after protocol overhead, oversubscription, and failed-path conditions?
Latency and tail behavior How does synchronized collective traffic behave, not just an isolated point-to-point test?
Congestion control Are marking, ECN, PFC, queueing, load balancing, and congestion-notification priorities configured and observable?
Resilience What happens when a link, adapter, leaf, spine, or power domain fails, and how many paths remain?
Physical fit Do host slots, cages, transceivers, cables, breakout modes, reach, and firmware all match?
Operations Can the team monitor queues and RDMA counters, replace optics, maintain firmware, and diagnose faults?
Expansion and cost How do port density, optics, cabling, power, cooling, rack space, and future nodes change the total design?
Isolation and security Should compute, storage/customer, and OOB management traffic be separate physically or logically?

Vendor reference configurations from NVIDIA and Cisco illustrate rail-optimized fabrics, leaf-spine arrangements, and separate management or storage roles, but they are starting points for supported systems rather than cross-vendor performance comparisons.

Use a repeatable selection and validation process

  1. Write the traffic model. Record accelerator count, node count, collective patterns, simultaneous jobs, storage flows, front-end demand, and management traffic.
  2. Set performance and resilience targets. Choose an oversubscription ratio, minimum bisection capacity, acceptable tail behavior, number of independent planes, and failure scenarios.
  3. Shortlist supported adapters and switches. Use current vendor matrices and the server OEM compatibility list; record exact part numbers rather than family names.
  4. Confirm host integration. Check PCIe lanes, slot placement, NUMA locality, firmware, kernel and driver versions, RDMA framework, and accelerator software prerequisites.
  5. Build the physical bill of materials. Match every port to its cage, optic or cable, lane mode, reach, breakout, and approved firmware.
  6. Design QoS and telemetry. For RoCE, specify markings, queues, ECN, PFC, congestion-notification handling, adaptive routing behavior, and the counters operators will monitor.
  7. Test under production-like load. Exercise synchronized collectives, concurrent jobs, storage overlap, link failures, and switch failures; capture throughput, tail latency, drops, ECN marks, and PFC events.
  8. Freeze a support baseline. Keep validated firmware, drivers, optics, and configuration versions, with a rollback plan for upgrades.

Common selection mistakes and recovery actions

  • Buying by line rate alone: Recalculate bisection bandwidth and oversubscription, then test collective traffic and incast.
  • Assuming all adapters in a family support the same protocols: Check the exact model matrix and server validation record.
  • Mixing unvalidated optics or breakout cables: Replace them with parts listed for the precise switch, adapter, reach, and lane mode.
  • Enabling PFC without an end-to-end policy: Align endpoint priorities, switch queues, ECN, and pause behavior; inspect PFC counters for storms.
  • Ignoring software prerequisites: Verify GPU Operator or equivalent integration, RDMA drivers, kernel versions, and collective-library support before deployment.
  • Combining management and training traffic indiscriminately: Separate or logically isolate roles according to security and failure-domain requirements.
  • Treating a vendor topology as a benchmark: Label published specifications and reference designs as design guidance, not measured workload performance.

Cisco summarizes the infrastructure rationale in a statement from Ram Ramkumar, Director, Technical Systems Engineering, Cisco IT NEO – Data Center Network Services: “AI workloads, including model training and retraining, require extensive data processing, making the network a vital part of AI infrastructure.” That is a Cisco employee’s statement in a Cisco product paper, not an independent benchmark.

What the evidence can and cannot tell you

The published speeds and topology counts above are vendor specifications or reference-design details. No independent, cross-vendor benchmark establishes that one switch or adapter choice is best for an unspecified AI workload. Prices, power draw, latency, retail availability, and return on investment depend on the exact configuration and are not established here.

Before ordering, give the server OEM and network vendor the complete workload, node, accelerator, geography, budget, and failure requirements. Obtain a current compatibility confirmation for the exact adapter and switch SKUs, optics, firmware, and software stack, then validate the design with production-like collective traffic.
