The best photocatalyst is not the one with the largest hydrogen number in a paper. It is the material that matches your intended reaction, illumination, reactor, measurement method and durability target. Start by defining whether you are screening a single half-reaction, demonstrating overall water splitting, or building a two-photocatalyst Z-scheme. Then compare light absorption, redox energetics, charge separation, selectivity, complete-system efficiency, stability and scale-up practicality under the same test conditions.
Define the reaction and reactor before comparing materials
A photocatalyst that evolves hydrogen with a sacrificial donor answers a different question from a system that splits water into hydrogen and oxygen. Treating those results as interchangeable is the most common selection error.
Half-reaction screening
In a hydrogen-evolution screen, a donor consumes photogenerated holes so that electrons can reduce protons. This configuration is useful for studying absorption, charge transfer, cocatalysts and degradation, but it does not establish that the material can oxidize water. Record the donor identity and concentration, electrolyte, pH, catalyst loading, reactor volume and gas-analysis method. A high rate in a donor-containing slurry should be labeled as a half-reaction result.

An overall-splitting system must supply both reduction and oxidation chemistry, produce hydrogen and oxygen in the expected stoichiometric relationship, and suppress side reactions. Its band energetics, surface kinetics and selectivity requirements are therefore stricter than those of a sacrificial-donor test. Confirm both gases independently rather than inferring oxygen from the hydrogen signal.

Particle slurries, photoelectrodes and Z-schemes
The U.S. Department of Energy treats particle-slurry and photoelectrode approaches as distinct system configurations. A slurry is dominated by particle surfaces, suspension mixing, light scattering, gas separation and catalyst recovery. A photoelectrode adds substrate conductivity, film thickness, contact resistance, bias and counter-electrode effects.
A Z-scheme couples two photocatalysts so that one handles the oxidation half-reaction and the other handles hydrogen evolution. Selection must cover both materials and the coupling architecture: redox mediator, selective coatings, transport and mixing, back-reaction suppression and gas management. A component that looks excellent alone can fail when the mediator absorbs light, shuttles charges in the wrong direction or promotes recombination.
| Configuration | Evidence it can support | Additional checks before claiming solar hydrogen |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrogen half-reaction with sacrificial donor | Hydrogen-evolution activity under specified donor conditions | Water-oxidation capability, donor-free operation and oxygen production remain unproven |
| Overall water splitting | Integrated H2 and O2 production | Gas stoichiometry, selectivity, light-to-hydrogen efficiency and long-duration stability |
| Particle Z-scheme | Coupled reduction and oxidation using two photocatalysts | Mediator transport, reverse reactions, selective coatings, mixing and gas separation |
| Photoelectrode system | Light-driven electrochemical production at defined electrodes | Bias, substrate, electrolyte, counter-electrode and standardized STH measurement |
Match light absorption to the actual light source
Compare the absorption edge and useful wavelength range with the lamp or solar simulator you will use. A material that absorbs strongly at one narrow wavelength may deliver a poor solar result if most of the source spectrum lies outside that band. Report the spectrum, irradiance, optical path, catalyst concentration or film loading and whether the test used a filter.
Use TiO2 as a controlled benchmark, not as a universal winner
TiO2 is widely used as an inorganic reference because of its stability and relatively favorable cost profile. Unmodified TiO2 generally requires ultraviolet irradiation, so its intrinsic solar-spectrum utilization is limited. It is valuable for controls when you document the actual crystalline phase, purity, particle size, surface area and any surface treatment. A generic commercial specification is not a substitute for characterizing the powder used in your reactor.

Interpret visible-light modifications cautiously
Doping, sensitization and heterostructure formation can extend absorption into the visible range. They can also introduce trap states, increase recombination, reduce stability, complicate synthesis or add an absorber that does not contribute useful charge to the reaction. Require a controlled comparison with the unmodified host under identical photon flux and reactor conditions. Stronger visible absorption alone is not evidence of higher solar-to-hydrogen performance.
Check energetics, charge separation and surface chemistry together
The candidate must have enough driving force for the intended reduction and oxidation reactions after accounting for pH, interfacial potentials and kinetic overpotentials. A nominal band diagram is only a starting point; surface states, defects, adsorbates and cocatalysts can shift the usable chemistry.
Questions to ask for each candidate
- Do the conduction- and valence-band positions provide the required reduction and oxidation potentials in the stated electrolyte?
- How long do photocarriers survive compared with the time needed for surface reactions?
- Does a cocatalyst accelerate proton reduction or water oxidation, and does its loading block light or create recombination sites?
- Are defects and surface states productive reaction sites, or do they mainly trap carriers?
- In a heterojunction or Z-scheme, is the proposed charge-transfer path demonstrated rather than inferred from a schematic?
For a Z-scheme, preserve the high-energy electrons needed for hydrogen evolution and the strong holes needed for oxygen evolution. Evaluate the mediator’s redox potential, optical absorption, chemical stability and tendency to trigger back-reactions. The two photocatalysts, mediator and coatings should be tested as a coupled system, not judged only from separate half-reactions.
Evaluate selectivity as a first-class performance metric
Hydrogen evolution is not sufficient evidence of useful overall splitting. Measure oxygen, check the H2:O2 ratio, and identify products from possible sacrificial reagents or photocorrosion. In particle Z-schemes, the redox shuttle can consume products or drive unwanted reverse reactions. DOE HydroGEN work identifies selective operation and low-cost redox-shuttle mixing as major challenges; its project materials note that few composite particles had demonstrated selective H2 and O2 evolution without unwanted shuttle reactions.

Coatings can protect a photocatalyst or make an electrode selective, but they may add resistance, block active sites or change gas transport. Report coating composition, thickness, deposition method and whether performance was measured before and after coating. A project presentation associated with DOE HydroGEN lists at least 95% selectivity for H2 and O2 over Fe(III) or iodate shuttle reactions as an expected advance for coated planar electrodes. That figure is a project goal, not a general specification for photocatalysts.
Compare activity with complete measurement context
Use different metrics for different questions. Wavelength-specific apparent quantum yield (AQY) is useful for comparing how efficiently incident photons at a selected wavelength produce a measured product. Internal quantum yield can be more informative when absorbed-photon data are reliable. Hydrogen-production rate shows throughput under a stated setup. Solar-to-hydrogen (STH) efficiency is intended for a complete solar-driven system and should not be substituted with a single-wavelength AQY.
Minimum reporting checklist
- Illumination spectrum, calibrated intensity, illuminated area and optical filters
- Reactor geometry, path length, volume, temperature, stirring or flow and gas headspace
- Catalyst phase, purity, particle size or film thickness, loading and exposed area
- Electrolyte, pH, sacrificial-agent identity and concentration, and dissolved-gas preparation
- Cocatalyst identity, loading and deposition procedure
- Hydrogen and oxygen quantification method, calibration, sampling interval and detection limit
- Whether rates are normalized by catalyst mass, area, reactor volume or incident power
- Replicate measurements, error bars and dark or blank controls
DOE defines STH as the lower-heating-value energy in net hydrogen divided by the full-spectrum solar energy supplied. For hybrid systems, count additional non-solar energy inputs; otherwise the reported value can overstate solar performance. NREL reported in 2022 that PEC STH results were difficult to compare because laboratories used different conditions and described round-robin work aimed at improving consistency. Its guidance emphasizes directly measuring produced hydrogen.
| Metric | Best use | What it cannot establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| AQY at a stated wavelength | Photon-use comparison at that wavelength | Full-spectrum solar performance or donor-free overall splitting |
| Hydrogen rate | Throughput under a defined reactor and chemistry | Fair ranking when light, loading, donor or gas analysis differs |
| STH efficiency | Complete solar-driven system performance | Intrinsic material quality independent of reactor design |
| H2:O2 selectivity | Verification of product stoichiometry and side-reaction control | Long-term durability or economic scalability |
Design stability tests that match the intended use
Monitor activity and composition over time in the intended electrolyte and illumination, not only in a benign screening medium. Track photocorrosion, dissolution or leaching, phase and surface changes, cocatalyst loss, particle aggregation and protective-coating damage. Analyze the solid and liquid after testing so that a falling rate can be linked to a mechanism.

An eight-hour or one-day run is useful for screening but is not a service-life prediction. A DOE target framework defines projected particle replacement lifetime by the time until process energy efficiency falls to 80% of its original value under cyclic illumination. Its table includes a five-year ultimate target for a specified dual-bed system; that number is a program target tied to its assumptions, not a guarantee for every material or reactor. A DOE HydroGEN presentation separately lists more than 90% stability for one day as an expected advance for a long-wavelength hydrogen-evolution target and reports more than 90% stability over eight hours for a project experiment. Keep those project-specific targets separate from general durability claims.
Include cost, synthesis and life-cycle practicality
Selection for a research program should account for more than initial AQY. Compare precursor availability and price, hazardous or scarce elements, synthesis yield, batch-to-batch reproducibility, thermal and atmosphere requirements, coating or cocatalyst steps, reactor compatibility, recovery and replacement. A material that requires a difficult multi-step synthesis may be unsuitable for scale-up even if its laboratory activity is impressive.
For larger-scale concepts, also examine life-cycle burdens: mining and refining of elements, solvent and energy use during synthesis, waste treatment, catalyst replacement and end-of-life handling. A 2026 review identifies stability, precursor cost and availability, synthesis scalability and life-cycle sustainability as relevant metrics alongside photocatalytic activity. Treat supplier or vendor specifications as starting information only; characterize the phase, purity, size distribution and surface treatment of the actual batch.

| Decision axis | Record | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Reaction and reactor | Half-reaction, overall splitting, slurry, photoelectrode or Z-scheme | Overall-splitting language based only on a sacrificial donor |
| Light use | Absorption range, source spectrum and AQY wavelength | Visible absorption claimed without controlled photon accounting |
| Energetics and charge use | Band positions, carrier lifetime, kinetics and cocatalyst role | Band diagram presented without surface or kinetic evidence |
| Selectivity | H2 and O2 amounts, side products, mediator behavior | Hydrogen measured while oxygen is assumed |
| System output | Rate, normalization, STH and external energy inputs | Mass-normalized rate compared across different reactors |
| Durability | Duration, cycling, efficiency-retention criterion and degradation analysis | Short test described as lifetime |
| Practicality | Precursors, reproducibility, scale, cost and life-cycle burden | Rare or complex material judged only by peak activity |
Score candidates only after normalizing what can legitimately be normalized. Do not rank a donor-assisted hydrogen rate against a donor-free STH result, or a narrow-band AQY against a full-spectrum efficiency, without labeling the comparison as non-equivalent.
Candidate examples and how to frame them
TiO2
Use TiO2 as a stability and process-control benchmark. Report its phase and surface treatment, and make its ultraviolet dependence explicit when discussing solar utilization.
Ir-doped SrTiO3
A DOE project presentation identifies Ir-doped SrTiO3 as a stable state-of-the-art particle for visible-light hydrogen evolution in that project context. Do not generalize that observation to every synthesis, reactor or overall-splitting configuration; reproduce the stated illumination, electrolyte, loading and gas-analysis conditions before making a comparison.

Z-scheme assemblies
Choose a Z-scheme when separate materials can provide the required reduction and oxidation potentials more effectively than one absorber. Budget experimental effort for mediator chemistry, selective interfaces, transport, reverse reactions and gas separation. The assembly—not either powder in isolation—is the object that must meet the solar-hydrogen claim.
Quick Recap
A practical workflow for a new photocatalyst study
- Write the claim first. Specify half-reaction or overall splitting, reactor type, light source, gases to be measured and whether a donor or external bias is allowed.
- Screen energetics and absorption. Eliminate candidates that cannot drive the required chemistry or that absorb little of the intended spectrum.
- Characterize the actual material. Verify phase, composition, purity, particle or film dimensions, surface area and cocatalyst distribution.
- Run matched controls. Include a benchmark such as documented TiO2, dark and no-catalyst controls, and the unmodified host for any doped or heterostructured candidate.
- Measure products directly. Calibrate gas analysis, quantify H2 and O2 separately where relevant, and report AQY or rate with all conditions.
- Test durability and mechanism. Repeat under operating conditions, inspect the catalyst afterward and identify leaching, phase change, photocorrosion or cocatalyst loss.
- Assess scale-up constraints. Record precursor supply, synthesis yield, reproducibility, coating steps, recovery, replacement interval and life-cycle concerns.
- Compare only compatible evidence. Keep half-reaction, overall-splitting, AQY, rate and STH results in their proper categories.
