Start with measured workload demands and recovery objectives, then compare arrays configured to meet them. A headline IOPS figure or advertised data-reduction ratio cannot show whether a system will suit your applications. Ask shortlisted vendors to test a representative workload and provide a written configuration, support commitment, and lifecycle cost model.

1. Define the workload before comparing arrays

Build a profile from the applications the array will serve, using measurements from representative busy periods as well as normal operation. Record:

  • Current data volume, expected growth, and the period over which you expect the system to serve it.
  • Read/write mix, block sizes, concurrency, throughput, and latency targets. Specify latency percentiles that matter to the application rather than relying on an average.
  • Peak periods, application criticality, and the consequences of degraded performance or an outage.
  • Whether you need block, file, or mixed access, and which host protocols your environment can support.

Databases, virtualization, analytics, and AI are common vendor-described use cases, not substitutes for measurements of your own applications. The Lenovo, Dell, and NetApp product materials describe broad enterprise workloads, but they do not establish how a particular array will perform on your workload.

2. Establish the capacity you actually need

Require vendors to distinguish capacity at each stage of the calculation. Raw physical capacity is not the same as usable capacity after system and data-protection overhead; allocated capacity is not the same as physically consumed capacity; and effective capacity after data reduction depends on the data and assumptions used.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make sure the sizing includes snapshot retention, replication, expected growth, and free-space headroom. Ask vendors to state any assumed compression or deduplication ratio and explain its basis. Lenovo DM, HPE Nimble, and CDW materials discuss data reduction, but a vendor figure is not a promise of the result for your data.

3. Compare performance on equal terms

IOPS alone can obscure both latency and the conditions under which a result was achieved. Have each vendor test the same workload profile and report latency distributions alongside IOPS and throughput. Keep the comparison consistent for read/write mix, block size, concurrency, data set, protocol, and protection features.

Ask how results change at realistic system utilization and during snapshots, replication, rebuilds, failover, and maintenance. For every published maximum or comparative claim, request the configuration and test method before treating it as evidence for your purchase. Lenovo DE, Dell, and HPE publish performance-related claims, but their product figures are not normalized across vendors or configurations.

NVMe media does not by itself make a deployment end-to-end NVMe. Lenovo describes NVMe over Fibre Channel and NVMe over TCP options for ThinkSystem DM; verify which path the proposed configuration supports and whether the hosts and fabric support it. NetApp describes multiple block and file protocols across its AFF family; confirm support for your specific model and software version.

5. Design for recovery, not just availability

Set recovery point objectives (RPOs) and recovery time objectives (RTOs) for the applications the array will protect. Then assess the architecture and operating procedures needed to meet them, including:

7. Compare candidate product families without mistaking claims for a ranking

These examples illustrate different vendor-described families; they are not endorsements or a performance ranking. Capabilities and limits need confirmation for the exact model, software release, and configuration in a proposal.

Family What vendor material describes What to verify
Lenovo ThinkSystem DM Series Unified data management, compression and deduplication, encryption, cloud integration, and NVMe over Fibre Channel or TCP. Supported protocols and software features for the proposed model, plus performance on your workload.
Lenovo ThinkSystem DE Series NVMe and SCSI options, snapshots and replication, and product-specific system limits. Its datasheet was updated February 25, 2026. Exact system limits and configuration; treat the datasheet’s performance and availability figures as Lenovo claims.
Dell PowerStore End-to-end NVMe design, active/active controllers, snapshots, replication, encryption, and threat-detection features. Configuration and methodology behind comparative performance or efficiency claims, and whether proposed features meet your requirements.
HPE Nimble Storage All Flash Arrays Scale-up and scale-out options, data reduction, snapshots and replication, encryption, and redundant hot-swap components. How the proposed scale path, data reduction, availability terms, and support commitments apply to your system.
NetApp AFF A family covering performance- and capacity-oriented use cases, with multiple block and file protocols and ONTAP-related data-protection features. Model- and software-version support for each required protocol and protection capability.

Vendor claims are not independent, directly comparable results. For example, Lenovo’s DM materials updated in 2025 state a latency-reduction claim for end-to-end NVMe over Fibre Channel, and its 2026 DE datasheet makes a performance comparison with SAS-based all-flash arrays. Such claims do not establish the expected result for another configuration or buyer workload.

  1. Agree on the test workload, data set, protocol, array configuration, software version, workload generator, measurement window, and any excluded conditions.
  2. Record latency percentiles, throughput, IOPS, resource utilization, and capacity consumed, including the assumptions used to calculate effective capacity.
  3. Exercise protection and failure behavior: test snapshots and restore, replication recovery, host and controller failover, and a maintenance or upgrade path where feasible.
  4. Require each vendor to map its quote to raw and usable capacity, protection overhead, assumed data reduction, expansion, software, support, power, and term.
  5. Put recovery objectives, support response, upgrade rights, and any availability commitment in the commercial documents.

9. Use a weighted scorecard to make the decision

Set weights according to your own requirements, then score each proposal on the same basis. Useful dimensions include workload latency and throughput; usable capacity and growth; reduction on representative data; host and fabric compatibility; resilience and recovery; application and backup integration; nondisruptive scaling and upgrades; management and automation; support; rack, power, and cooling; and multi-year total cost.

Normalize every proposal to the same workload, capacity basis, protection policy, protocol, support duration, and evaluation period. The right choice depends on those buyer-specific requirements; the available product descriptions do not support a universal best array.
