Do not resign first and build a care plan later. Start by measuring the parent’s actual needs, your household’s cash flow, insurance, retirement benefits and legal responsibilities, then compare early retirement with reduced work, shared care and leave. The right choice depends on how intensive and long-lasting the care may be, what help is available, and whether your finances can absorb an earlier end to paychecks.

Start with the care problem, not the retirement date

A parent who needs occasional transportation is a different planning problem from one who needs help bathing, toileting, meals, medication routines or supervision throughout the day. Ask the parent’s clinician or care team for a current assessment and write down the tasks, frequency and likely progression. Do not rely on a general label such as “needs help” when deciding whether to give up employment.

Build a weekly care inventory

  • List every task, including personal care, meals, transportation, appointments, medication support, household work and monitoring.
  • Estimate the time for each task and identify when it occurs. A two-hour task at a fixed time may be easier to share than unpredictable overnight supervision.
  • Mark which tasks require you personally, which another family member could do, and which could be paid or community-supported.
  • Record risks: falls, wandering, missed medication, unsafe driving, inability to use the bathroom, or emergencies that require an immediate response.

Use the list to create a realistic weekly schedule. If the schedule already exceeds what one person can safely provide, early retirement is not a substitute for a broader care plan.

Ask how the need could change

Plan at least two versions: the parent’s current needs and a more intensive scenario. A plan that works only while the parent remains stable is fragile. Include the possibility that care could last longer than expected, require nights or weekends, or eventually need professional or residential services. The parent’s diagnosis, prognosis and preferences should be discussed with the care team and family rather than assumed.

Compare three paths before you resign

Evaluate at least these alternatives using the same assumptions. Put take-home income, care spending, insurance, retirement contributions, benefit accrual and your own wellbeing on one page so the trade-offs are visible.

Path When it can fit What to test Main exposure
Keep working with a changed schedule or shared care Needs are predictable and other relatives, paid workers or community services can cover gaps Reduced hours, remote or shifted hours, backup coverage and the cost of paid help Work disruption and caregiver fatigue if coverage fails
Use job-protected leave or employer benefits A serious health condition creates a temporary period of intensive care or treatment Eligibility, duration, whether leave is paid, health-benefit premiums and what happens when leave ends Leave may run out before the care need does
Retire early Assets and reliable income can cover household and care costs without employment Withdrawal rate, insurance before Medicare eligibility, lost contributions, taxes and a return-to-work contingency A permanent reduction in earnings and benefits for a need that may be temporary

Run each path for a short-term, medium-term and extended-care case. Include the parent’s resources and any contributions other relatives can actually sustain; do not count informal promises as cash flow until they are agreed in writing.

Calculate the financial runway

Retirement is affordable only if the household can fund ordinary living costs and care costs after the paycheck stops. Make a month-by-month budget for at least the first year and an annual projection beyond it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include every income change

  • Employment wages, bonuses and employer contributions that disappear or fall when you reduce hours or leave.
  • Social Security timing and estimated benefit based on your own record. A claiming decision is separate from the decision to stop working.
  • Pension or other guaranteed income, if applicable, and the date each payment begins.
  • Withdrawals from retirement and taxable accounts, including the tax effect of each withdrawal.
  • Any payment the parent can lawfully contribute toward care without jeopardizing the parent’s own needs or eligibility for assistance.

Price the costs people overlook

  • Health insurance premiums and out-of-pocket costs after employment ends, especially if you are not yet eligible for Medicare.
  • Travel, home modifications, adult day services, respite, paid in-home help, transportation and emergency coverage.
  • Higher utilities, meals, supplies and technology used to monitor or coordinate care.
  • Taxes, professional advice and administrative costs related to paying a caregiver or managing the parent’s finances.
  • Lost retirement contributions, employer matching and future wage growth caused by leaving work earlier.

Use conservative assumptions for inflation, investment returns and the duration of care. Stress-test the plan if care lasts several years, paid help costs more than expected, or you need to replace a vehicle or make an urgent home repair. A fee-only financial planner, tax professional or benefits counselor can review the projections; the decision still requires your own records and assumptions.

Check leave and work benefits before giving up a job

Federal Family and Medical Leave Act

The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may provide an eligible employee up to 12 workweeks of unpaid, job-protected leave in a 12-month period to care for a parent with a serious health condition. Group health benefits continue under the same conditions as if you had continued working.

Federal eligibility generally requires all of the following:

  • At least 12 months of employment with the employer (the months need not be consecutive in every circumstance).
  • At least 1,250 hours worked during the preceding 12 months.
  • A worksite where the employer has at least 50 employees within 75 miles.

Confirm coverage and your exact eligibility with human resources or the U.S. Department of Labor. FMLA leave can be unpaid, and it does not guarantee that 12 weeks will match the parent’s care timeline. State paid-leave laws, paid sick time, disability programs and employer policies are separate questions; ask for the written policy, required notices, certification process and rules for intermittent or reduced-schedule leave.

Test a smaller change first

If possible, use vacation, intermittent leave, a temporary schedule reduction or a trial period of shared care before making retirement irreversible. Track the actual hours, missed work, out-of-pocket spending and your stress during the trial. The record is more useful than an optimistic estimate.

Understand what Medicare and Medicaid will—and will not—pay

Medicare does not pay for long-term care. Medicare.gov describes long-term care as medical and nonmedical services for chronic illness or disability, including help with bathing, dressing, toileting, meals, adult day health care and transportation. A short, Medicare-covered skilled-nursing benefit is not the same as ongoing custodial assistance with daily activities.

Medicaid may cover some long-term care when the parent meets the applicable state financial and medical eligibility rules. Those rules vary by state and can involve income, assets, level of need, services and timing. Private long-term-care insurance may also contribute, subject to the policy’s triggers, waiting period, benefit limits and exclusions. Obtain the parent’s policy documents and ask the state Medicaid agency or a qualified benefits counselor for current rules before counting on coverage.

For your own planning, identify how you will maintain health coverage after leaving work and before Medicare eligibility, what premiums and deductibles would be, and whether the coverage permits the doctors and services your household uses. Do not treat an unverified insurance quote as a fixed retirement expense.

Account for Social Security and retirement timing

Stopping work, claiming Social Security and reaching full retirement age are separate decisions. Review your earnings record and personalized estimate before selecting a claiming date. Your benefit can differ substantially from another person’s even at the same age.

The Social Security Administration’s 2026 Cost-of-Living Adjustment Fact Sheet reports a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment for 2026. It also states that the annual earnings limit for beneficiaries younger than full retirement age is $24,480 in 2026, with one dollar in benefits withheld for every $2 of earnings above that limit. These are year-specific figures; confirm the current limit and how the earnings test applies to your situation with the SSA when you claim or return to work. The withholding is not the same as a permanent loss of every benefit, and the precise adjustment depends on SSA rules and your circumstances.

Project how leaving work changes your future contributions, employer match, pension calculation and taxable income. Keep a cash reserve for the period before benefits begin rather than assuming an early claim will solve a care budget.

Handle taxes and family payments correctly

Claiming a parent as a dependent

The IRS caregiver FAQ asks whether a person caring for an aging parent may claim the parent as a dependent. The answer is not automatic. The parent must meet the applicable relationship, support, residency and gross-income tests, among other requirements. The FAQ states a $5,200 gross-income threshold for its 2025 tax-year example; thresholds and other rules are year-specific, so check the IRS guidance for the tax year you file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Medical expenses you pay for a parent may be deductible only when the dependency and other tax tests are met, the expenses qualify and you itemize where required. Keep receipts, insurance statements and records showing who paid each expense. Ask a tax professional to apply the rules to your household rather than assuming that living together or sharing bills is enough.

Paying a family caregiver

If the parent or another family member pays you or someone else for in-home care, tax responsibilities depend on the actual arrangement. The worker may be a household employee or may provide services as a business. The IRS identifies circumstances in which a caregiver is a household employee and points to household-employer tax rules. Family status alone does not determine classification.

Before money changes hands, write down who is the employer, what services are provided, the rate, schedule, reimbursement rules and record-keeping method. Confirm current withholding, reporting and payroll requirements with the IRS or a tax professional. An informal payment can create tax problems for both the payer and the caregiver.

Put legal and decision-making authority in place

Care often requires access to medical information, bills, insurance claims and government forms. Ask the parent, while the parent has decision-making capacity, which authorizations and powers of attorney are appropriate under your state’s law. An elder-law attorney can explain the documents, witnessing or notarization rules, conflicts among family members and limits on an agent’s authority.

Store copies of identity documents, insurance cards, medication lists, clinicians’ contact information, account instructions and the parent’s stated preferences securely. A legal document does not by itself create access to every online account or guarantee that a bank or insurer will accept an outdated form, so verify procedures with each institution.

Use a decision process you can revisit

  1. Document needs. Obtain a current clinical assessment and complete the weekly task and time inventory.
  2. Map available help. List family availability, community programs, paid services, insurance and the parent’s own resources. Confirm schedules and eligibility rather than estimating.
  3. Ask your employer. Get written information on FMLA coverage, state leave, flexible scheduling, paid time, health benefits and the consequences of reducing hours.
  4. Build three budgets. Model continued work, leave or reduced work, and early retirement using the same care assumptions.
  5. Stress-test duration and intensity. Recalculate if care lasts longer, becomes overnight, or requires paid professional help.
  6. Review benefits and taxes. Check your Social Security record, retirement-account projections, health coverage and the current IRS rules before signing an agreement or filing a claim.
  7. Set a review date. Reassess after a defined period or when the parent’s diagnosis, function, coverage or family availability changes.

Warning signs that resignation is premature

  • Your budget works only if the parent’s condition improves or a relative provides unpaid help indefinitely.
  • You have not priced health coverage before Medicare eligibility or cannot explain how premiums would be paid.
  • You are counting Medicare on the assumption that it will pay for daily custodial help.
  • You have no reserve for your own emergencies, a longer care period or a return-to-work transition.
  • The parent’s wishes, financial resources and legal authorizations are unknown or disputed.
  • You have not asked whether leave, a reduced schedule or paid support could cover the immediate crisis.

Retiring early can be a sound choice when the care need is clear, alternatives are inadequate and the household can fund the plan under conservative assumptions. It is risky when it is the only response to an urgent but potentially temporary problem. Make the decision from a documented care schedule and a tested financial runway, not from exhaustion or pressure.
