A used Magico A3 can be an excellent high-end purchase, but the model’s price and reputation do not remove the need for a careful inspection. Before paying, verify that the pair is really the original A3, examine every driver and the aluminum cabinet, obtain purchase and service records, confirm any remaining warranty with an authorized Magico channel, make sure your amplifier is comfortable with a 4-ohm load, and plan how two 110-pound speakers will reach their final position.
The A3 is a large, three-way floorstander. Condition, provenance, missing hardware and delivery risk can matter more than a seller’s description or a familiar model name. Use the checklist below to evaluate the specific pair rather than assuming that every used A3 has the same history.
Confirm exactly what the seller is offering
Start by establishing the model and the completeness of the pair before discussing price. Magico’s original A3 uses a three-way, four-driver layout: a 1.1-inch beryllium dome tweeter, one 6-inch midrange and two 7-inch bass drivers in each cabinet. The manufacturer describes a machined, anodized aluminum enclosure with internal bracing and a four-point spiked outrigger base. Those details give you a practical identification checklist, but they do not authenticate a serial number or prove that a cabinet is internally original.
Request a complete photo set
Ask for recent, well-lit photographs of both speakers, not just a stock image or one front view. Request:

- Close-ups of the beryllium tweeters, midranges and both bass drivers.
- Every cabinet edge, corner and side panel.
- The rear connection panel and any labels or serial information.
- The base, all four outriggers and every spike or foot.
- Any grilles, jumpers, accessories, original cartons and packing materials.
Compare the layout and external form with Magico’s official A3 product description. If the seller cannot provide serial information or the history is unclear, ask Magico or an authorized dealer whether they can help establish provenance. The available product documents do not describe a public serial-number authentication procedure, so do not treat a photograph alone as proof of authenticity.
Check that it is a matched pair
Confirm that both cabinets belong together and have compatible finishes and hardware. Ask whether either speaker has ever been replaced, refinished or supplied from a different production batch. Differences in finish, serial sequence or hardware do not automatically mean a problem, but they deserve an explanation and documentation before you value the pair as a matched set.
Inspect the physical condition before money changes hands
Whenever possible, inspect the speakers in person with enough time to examine them without the seller rushing you. The official construction makes certain areas especially important: aluminum panels can show impact damage, the exposed drivers are expensive components, and the outrigger system affects both stability and setup.
Cabinet and finish
- Look for dents, creases, deep scratches, chipped anodizing or uneven refinishing on every panel.
- Examine corners and the area around the base for impact marks that could indicate a drop.
- Check that panels and fasteners sit evenly, with no obvious gaps, rattles or loose hardware.
- Ask whether the cabinet has been opened, drilled, repainted or modified for another mounting system.
A cosmetic mark should be priced according to its visibility and the cost of an acceptable repair. A bent panel, damaged thread or sign of structural impact is a more serious concern because it may affect alignment, stability or future service.
Drivers and grilles
Use a bright light and inspect each driver at a shallow angle. The beryllium tweeter dome should not be pushed, dented or punctured. Check the midrange and bass cones for tears, creases, rubbing, detached surrounds or evidence of liquid exposure. Do not touch the tweeter dome or cone surfaces. Ask directly whether any driver has been replaced and request an invoice or service report if the answer is yes.

Operate any grille fittings gently and verify that every grille supplied with the pair is present and undamaged. Missing grilles may not affect sound, but they affect protection, appearance and replacement cost. Do not assume that a generic grille or hardware kit is an approved substitute.
Base, outriggers and spikes
Confirm that the four-point outrigger base is attached correctly and that all outriggers, spikes, adjustment hardware and locking pieces are included. Inspect threads for cross-threading and look for bent metal or cracked feet. Missing spikes can make leveling impossible and may require sourcing model-specific parts. Ask the seller to demonstrate that each adjustment works without forcing it.
Connections and internal work
Inspect the binding posts or other rear connections for stripped threads, bent parts, corrosion or heat discoloration. Ask whether the crossover, wiring, terminals or cabinet has ever been repaired or modified. The published construction description does not provide a complete used-unit diagnostic protocol, so a clean exterior cannot establish that every internal component is fault-free.
Listen to both speakers, but treat the audition as one piece of evidence
If an audition is possible, bring familiar recordings with vocals, acoustic instruments and bass, and listen to each channel separately before evaluating the stereo pair. Start at ordinary listening levels, then raise the level only as far as the room and seller permit.
What to check
- Both speakers should produce a stable, centered image when positioned symmetrically.
- Vocals and instruments should not change character dramatically when you switch left and right channels.
- Listen for buzzes, rattles, scraping, intermittent output or a driver that remains silent.
- Pay attention to cabinet noises during bass-heavy passages and at moderate volume.
- Try several familiar tracks rather than relying on one recording or a short demonstration.
A listening check is general buyer practice, not a Magico-published acceptance test. It cannot reveal every crossover, motor, seal or intermittent fault, and a seller’s room or electronics may mask a problem. If the pair cannot be auditioned, put more weight on documentation, return terms and a professional inspection contingency.

Handle the frequency-response discrepancy honestly
Magico’s official materials do not agree on the lower-frequency figure. The product page states 26 Hz–50 kHz, while the launch announcement and owner’s guide state 22 Hz–50 kHz. The documents do not explain whether this reflects a measurement convention, a revision or another condition. Do not silently merge the figures or use one number to make a used listing appear more attractive. Ask the seller for the documentation supplied with that pair and retain the source and date when recording the specification.
Match the speakers to an appropriate amplifier
The A3 is specified at 4 ohms and 88 dB sensitivity. Magico’s launch material and product information give a minimum recommended amplifier power of 50 watts RMS and a maximum recommended power of 300 watts RMS. These numbers are starting points, not a substitute for checking the amplifier’s own load rating.
Questions for the amplifier manufacturer
- Is continuous operation into a 4-ohm load explicitly supported?
- Does the amplifier remain stable when both channels drive demanding program material?
- Are there restrictions on speaker impedance, wiring or ventilation?
- Does the manufacturer specify output at 4 ohms, rather than only at 8 ohms?
Do not select an amplifier solely by its wattage label. A design that is nominally powerful but not stable into the speaker’s load can be a poor match, while a lower-rated design may be suitable if its manufacturer approves the load and your listening levels are reasonable. The published A3 figures do not establish loudness, distortion or bass performance in your room.
Use safe connection practices
Turn the amplifier off before connecting or moving cables, observe polarity, and prevent bare conductors from touching adjacent terminals. If the seller demonstrates the pair, ask what amplifier was used and whether any protection circuit, clipping event or driver failure has occurred. A successful demonstration with one amplifier does not transfer its suitability to yours.

Verify purchase history, service and warranty eligibility
Documentation can materially change the risk of a used purchase. Request the original invoice or receipt, purchase date, dealer name, serial information, service records and paperwork for every replacement or repair.
How the published warranty language affects a used pair
The A3 owner’s guide describes a five-year limited warranty that generally applies to the original owner. It also describes a remaining-term exception for used or trade-in units bought through an authorized Magico dealer or distributor. That exception is not the same as a blanket transferable warranty for every private-party sale.
- Ask the seller for the original purchase date and receipt.
- Determine whether the seller is the original owner or whether the pair was traded in through an authorized channel.
- Contact Magico or the relevant authorized dealer or distributor with the specific serial information and documents.
- Ask what, if anything, remains of the five-year term and whether the proposed sale qualifies.
- Get the answer in writing before assigning monetary value to possible coverage.
Warranty outcomes can depend on the original transaction, documentation, date and jurisdiction. Do not rely on a seller’s statement that “the warranty transfers” without confirmation from the authorized channel.
Why service records matter even after coverage expires
Invoices can reveal a replaced tweeter, repaired crossover, cabinet impact or recurring fault that an audition may not expose. Ask whether work was performed by Magico, an authorized service provider or another technician, and retain the paperwork with your ownership records. A documented repair is not automatically negative; unexplained work is the greater risk.

At approximately 44 inches tall and 110 pounds per speaker, an A3 pair is a handling project, not a casual parcel. Measure the route from collection point to listening room before committing.

Access checklist
- Measure exterior doors, interior doors, stair widths, landings and tight turns.
- Check elevator dimensions and weight limits if applicable.
- Identify thresholds, steps and floor surfaces that could make a loaded cabinet unstable.
- Decide how two people will lift, carry and set each speaker down without touching the drivers.
- Confirm whether original cartons, molded protection and covers are included.
Ask the seller or carrier exactly how the speakers will be packed, loaded, insured and delivered. Confirm who is responsible for damage claims and when you must inspect the shipment. No current freight quote is established here, so obtain a written estimate that includes stairs, accessorial charges and insurance rather than assuming a standard delivery price.
Allow for setup space
The published width and depth do not include the room space needed to install outriggers, adjust spikes, route speaker cables and move the cabinets into position. Mark the footprint with tape before delivery. Avoid placing a cabinet where a door, radiator or furniture can strike the drivers or where the spikes could damage an unprotected floor.
Compare two used A3 listings on the same axes
There is no reliable current used-market price established here, and the historical US suggested retail price was $9,800 per pair at the 2018 launch. That launch figure is not a present-day valuation. Compare listings using evidence rather than anchoring on the original price.

Red flags that should change the deal
- The seller refuses close-up photos or will not identify the serial information.
- A tweeter, midrange or bass driver is dented, silent, intermittent or described as “cosmetic only” without service evidence.
- One cabinet has a different finish, hardware set or unexplained replacement history.
- Outriggers, spikes or base parts are missing and the seller cannot identify replacements.
- The seller promises transferable warranty coverage but will not let you confirm it with Magico or an authorized channel.
- The pair has been stored in damp conditions, exposed to smoke or transported without proper protection.
- There is no safe plan for moving 110-pound cabinets through the available access route.
- The price is justified by the 2018 launch MSRP rather than the pair’s documented current condition and local alternatives.
Any single cosmetic mark may be negotiable. A combination of missing hardware, uncertain provenance, damaged drivers and no return or inspection option is a reason to pause or walk away.
A practical purchase sequence
- Collect evidence. Obtain model, serial, driver, cabinet, base and accessory photographs plus the seller’s written description.
- Check the specification fit. Confirm the driver layout, 4-ohm load, 88 dB sensitivity and your amplifier’s approved operating range.
- Review records. Request the receipt, purchase date, dealer, service invoices and warranty information.
- Inspect or arrange an inspection. Examine both cabinets and all drivers in person, or use a qualified local inspection with clear return conditions.
- Audition both channels. Use familiar material and check for equal output, noise, rattles and intermittent behavior.
- Confirm completeness. Count outriggers, spikes, grilles, jumpers and packing pieces before final payment.
- Confirm warranty separately. Ask Magico or an authorized dealer or distributor to verify any remaining eligibility for the specific transaction.
- Write the delivery plan. Record packing, insurance, route, access charges, inspection timing and responsibility for damage.
- Set a condition-based price. Compare documented condition and total delivered cost with current local listings, not only the historical MSRP.
- Document the transaction. Keep photographs, serial information, invoices, correspondence and a signed bill of sale.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Magico’s official product page, launch announcement and owner’s guide establish the A3’s construction, published specifications, dimensions, weight and warranty framework. They do not establish the condition of a particular used pair, a current market price, a current freight cost, or a complete measurement-based inspection procedure. Treat those as questions for the seller, an inspector, the carrier and the authorized Magico service channel.
The manufacturer’s launch announcement calls the A3 “the impossible made possible.” That is promotional language, not an independent test result. Judge a used pair by verifiable condition, documentation, system compatibility and the practical cost of getting it safely into your room.
