A phone that becomes warm and temporarily slow during gaming, camera recording, navigation, charging, setup, downloads, or updates may be protecting itself from excess heat. Stop the demanding task, move the phone out of sun or another hot place, unplug it if charging is adding heat, and let it cool. If it remains excessively hot, repeatedly overheats during ordinary use, or shows a temperature warning, stop using it and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.

Use the checks below to separate a short-lived workload issue from a charging, environmental, software, or hardware problem.

Why a hot phone can become slow

Modern phones generate heat when their processor, graphics hardware, modem, camera, display, or battery is working hard. Gaming, high-quality video streaming, camera recording, GPS navigation, hotspot use, video calls, multitasking, large downloads, setup, data transfer, backup restoration, and operating-system or app updates can all increase workload. High screen brightness and a weak mobile signal can add to power use as well.

Warmth during one of these activities does not by itself prove a fault. The important distinction is whether the phone cools when the activity ends and whether it is merely warm or excessively hot. Apple and Samsung both describe built-in thermal protections that can reduce performance until the device cools.

What was happening Why heat may rise What you should observe
Gaming, high-quality streaming, camera recording or video calls Processor, graphics, camera and display work continuously Performance may reduce during the task and recover after cooling
GPS navigation, hotspot/tethering or weak mobile signal The radio works harder and may stay active for long periods Heat can increase even when the screen is not doing intensive graphics work
Charging, especially wireless charging Power is entering the battery while the phone may also be in use The phone should cool after charging stops; abnormal heat while idle needs attention
Setup, restore, backup, downloads or software updates Background indexing, transfers and installation create sustained activity Temporary warmth is possible while the work completes

When internal temperature rises beyond its normal range, safeguards can dim the display, lower frame rates, increase processing times, pause or stop charging, close apps, reduce performance, or shut the phone down. Normal speed should return after the device cools; a slowdown that persists during light use deserves further investigation.

Run this 60-second safety check first

  1. Stop the intensive task. Exit a game, camera recording, navigation session, hotspot, video call, download, restore, or update if it is safe to do so.
  2. Check whether the phone is charging. Disconnect the cable or remove it from the wireless charger if the device is hot.
  3. Move it to a cooler, shaded, ventilated place. Take it out of direct sunlight, a parked car, a bed or other surface that traps heat, and away from heaters.
  4. Leave it alone until it cools. Do not resume demanding work immediately just because the screen responds again.
  5. Look for a warning. Follow any on-screen temperature instruction rather than overriding it.

If the phone becomes comfortable to hold and works normally afterward, the event was likely related to workload or environment. That does not make repeated overheating during ordinary use normal.

Check the heat around the phone

Ambient temperature matters. Apple specifies an operating range of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) for iPhone and iPad. Samsung’s US support guidance states 32°F to 95°F for Galaxy devices. These are ambient-use ranges, not universal internal battery or component cutoff temperatures; model-specific instructions and warnings take priority.

Environment Check Action
Direct sunlight Is the screen or back of the phone exposed to sun? Move it into shade and stop intensive use.
Parked car or other hot enclosure Could surrounding air be hotter than the phone’s operating range? Remove the phone and let it cool in a normal indoor environment.
Bedding, clothing or a tightly enclosed space Can air circulate around the phone? Place it on a hard, open surface while it cools.
Normal room conditions Does it still overheat during light use? Continue with charging, app and support checks; recurring heat is not explained by a hot environment.

Apple warns that a parked car can exceed its storage range and that using an iPhone or iPad in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life. See Apple’s temperature guidance and Samsung’s normal-operating-temperature guidance for device-specific cautions.

Check charging, the cable and the case

Heat that appears mainly while charging calls for a different check than slowdown that occurs only during gaming. Stop charging until the phone is cool, then inspect the accessory and connection.

  • Look for a frayed, bent or otherwise damaged cable, a damaged charging port, or a loose connection.
  • Use a charger and cable verified for your exact phone model and charging standard. Samsung recommends an approved charger and cable for Galaxy devices; compatibility differs by model, so a replacement is not a general cure for performance slowdown.
  • For wireless charging, remove metal objects, magnets and cards from between the phone and the charging surface, as Samsung advises.
  • If an iPhone becomes hot on a wireless charger, remove the case temporarily. Apple notes that some cases can create excess heat during charging.
  • Do not continue charging through an accessory that becomes unusually hot, smells damaged, or repeatedly interrupts charging.

Apple’s battery guidance covers heat from wireless charging and cases at Batteries: Maximising Performance. A different charger is relevant when charging itself is contributing to heat or an accessory is damaged or incompatible; it will not fix every slowdown under load.

  1. Review battery or device-care usage. Open your phone’s battery-usage or device-care screen and look for an app with high foreground or background activity. Menu names differ by manufacturer and software version.
  2. Check background causes. Apple’s Battery Usage screen can identify background activity, location use, and “No Mobile Coverage and Low Signal.” Samsung likewise lists background activity and weak signal among conditions associated with increased power use and heat.
  3. Install available updates. Update the operating system and apps after the phone is cool and connected to a reliable power source if needed. An update can also explain temporary heat while it is being installed or indexing files.
  4. Reduce unnecessary load. Lower screen brightness and temporarily disable unused location, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or hotspot functions when they are not needed. Re-enable them when the relevant service is required.
  5. Repeat the same task once. If one app reliably causes heat while other demanding tasks do not, check that app’s updates and settings or contact its developer. If every app causes heat during light use, escalate sooner.

Do not assume an Android menu path shown for one brand applies to every Android phone. Use the labels on your model, and consult its manufacturer support documentation if a setting is not present.

Recognize thermal warnings and automatic safeguards

A slowdown can be the phone protecting its battery and components rather than a permanent loss of performance. Apple documents reduced frame rates and longer processing times when an iPhone or iPad is too warm. Samsung says a Galaxy device may dim the display, slow down, pause charging, close apps, or power off to cool.

Apple’s warning may read “Temperature: iPhone needs to cool down” (Apple Support, page published May 19, 2026). Apple’s instruction is to turn the device off, move it to a cooler place away from direct sunlight, and let it cool before using it again. Follow equivalent instructions for another model instead of repeatedly dismissing the warning.

A warning, emergency shutdown, or charging pause is a stop signal. Do not keep gaming, recording or navigating while the phone is telling you it is too hot.

Use the pattern to decide what to do next

Pattern Most useful interpretation Next step
Heat only during a demanding task; normal afterward Workload-related warmth is plausible Shorten sessions, lower brightness or graphics load, and improve ventilation.
Heat while charging, especially wirelessly Charging setup, case or accessory may be contributing Stop charging, inspect the cable and port, test without the case, and verify compatibility.
Heat in sun, a car or a hot room Ambient temperature is adding to internal heat Move the phone to shade and a normal indoor environment; do not use it in the hot enclosure.
Heat with navigation, hotspot or weak signal Radio workload may be sustained End the connection when possible, improve signal conditions, or use a lower-load alternative.
Heat during light use or while idle Background activity, charging hardware or a fault is more concerning Restart, inspect battery usage and accessories, install updates, then contact support if it recurs.
Repeated warning, shutdown or phone too hot to touch Automatic protection is not resolving the cause Stop using it and arrange manufacturer or authorized service support.

When persistent heat needs service

Contact the manufacturer or an authorized repair provider when severe heat continues after the phone has cooled, the device repeatedly shuts down, charging remains abnormal, or heat occurs during ordinary light use. Samsung specifically advises contacting support if a Galaxy device remains too warm to touch; its troubleshooting guidance is available at How to prevent overheating when using your Samsung Galaxy device. Apple provides further help through its temperature-support page.

Before contacting support, record what the phone was doing, whether it was charging, the surrounding conditions, any warning text, the accessories connected, and whether a restart changed the behavior. This information helps support distinguish a workload event from a charging or hardware problem.

Warmth alone does not diagnose battery failure. The stronger evidence is recurrence during light use, persistent excessive temperature, abnormal charging, repeated protective shutdowns, or a device that remains too hot to touch after the workload and environment have been removed.
