If Phone Hub is missing, your Chromebook cannot find your Android phone, or one connected-phone feature has stopped syncing, check the setup in this order: confirm Android, the same Google Account, Bluetooth, software updates, and management restrictions; then open Settings → Connected devices, select the phone, and enable Phone Hub and the specific feature. If the devices were paired before, remove the old Bluetooth pairing on both, toggle Bluetooth on the phone, restart the Chromebook, and pair again.
A phone that appears as connected does not automatically have every Phone Hub capability available. Notifications, photos, app streaming, Smart Lock, and phone hotspots have separate switches, permissions, device requirements, or network conditions.
What Phone Hub does—and why one feature can disappear
Phone Hub is ChromeOS’s set of connections to an Android phone. Depending on the phone, Chromebook, account, and administrator policy, it can expose phone notifications, recent photos, app-related controls, Smart Lock, and the phone’s network connection. Google says most connected-phone features are enabled by default, but each capability can be turned off independently.

That means a successful pairing proves only that the basic relationship exists. It does not prove that notification access, photo access, app streaming, Smart Lock, or hotspot discovery is allowed. Treat a missing capability as a feature-specific problem unless the phone itself is absent from Connected devices.

Check the requirements for your connection path
Google publishes two requirement sets in its help material. The Phone Hub feature page describes ChromeOS M89 or later with Android 5.1 or later. The broader Android-to-Chromebook connection instructions describe ChromeOS 71 or later with Android 6 or later. Use the first set when you are troubleshooting the Phone Hub feature page and the second when following the general phone-connection workflow; ChromeOS and Android updates can also change the supported feature list.

Match the symptom to the first check

Use this troubleshooting sequence

Confirm the basic setup
Make sure the phone is an Android device and that the Chromebook and phone are signed in to the same Google Account. Turn on Bluetooth on both devices and keep them close while testing. If the phone cannot be found or connected, install available Android operating-system and Google Play Services updates before trying to pair again.

Check whether an administrator is blocking it
If the Chromebook belongs to a school, employer, or other organization, the administrator may have disabled connected-phone features. Ask the administrator whether Phone Hub, notifications, app streaming, Smart Lock, or hotspot access is permitted. Local settings cannot override a management policy.

Inspect Phone Hub and the individual controls
On the Chromebook, open Settings → Connected devices, choose the listed phone, and verify that Phone Hub is on. Open the same page’s individual controls and enable the missing capability, such as notifications or photos. You can also open the Phone Hub panel and use its settings shortcut. Menu wording can vary by ChromeOS version, so look for the phone name and connected-device settings if labels differ.

Clear an old Bluetooth relationship
If these devices were paired in the past, remove the saved Bluetooth pairing from both the Chromebook and phone. On the phone, switch Bluetooth off, wait briefly, and switch it on again. Restart the Chromebook, then return to Settings → Connected devices and pair the phone as a new device. A stale pairing can leave the phone visible but prevent the feature handshake from completing.

Pair a different or replacement phone correctly
Disconnect the currently connected phone before adding another one. On the new Android phone, enable Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, then start the Chromebook’s connected-device setup. Trying to add the new phone while the old one remains active can make the wrong device appear in Phone Hub.

Test the exact feature instead of the connection badge
After pairing, trigger the missing function: send a test notification, take a new photo, open the app-streaming control, attempt Smart Lock, or open the Chromebook Wi-Fi menu. This separates a general connection failure from a permission or feature-specific failure.

When app streaming is the missing capability
App streaming has stricter requirements than ordinary Phone Hub controls. Google’s listed compatible phones include Pixel 4A or later running Android 13 or later, Nothing Phone (1) and (2), and selected Xiaomi models. The exact Xiaomi coverage is maintained in Google’s supported-phone list and can change, so an unlisted model should be treated as unsupported rather than repaired through a hidden setting.
Verify the streaming conditions
- Put the Chromebook and phone on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Keep the devices close together during setup and use.
- Allow the phone permissions requested for notifications, photos and media, and apps.
- Confirm that the phone model and Android release meet Google’s current list.
- Try a different network if the current public, guest, or private network isolates devices. Google notes that some networks do not support app streaming.
Instant Tethering may help create a local connection where it is available, but it does not remove the phone-model, Android-version, proximity, or permission requirements. A connected phone can still provide ordinary Phone Hub features while app streaming remains unavailable.

When notifications or photos are not syncing
First verify the relevant Phone Hub switch under Settings → Connected devices → your phone. Then review the phone’s requested notification and media permissions. If notifications are absent but photos work, or photos are absent while notifications work, leave the working feature alone and correct only the disabled permission or toggle.
Do not infer that a temporary lack of internet means every Phone Hub function must stop. Google states that the Phone Hub features described on its support page can still be used when the Chromebook is offline. App streaming is a separate case and requires the same Wi-Fi network, so it should be tested under its own network conditions.
Troubleshoot Smart Lock separately
Smart Lock is not simply an extension of Bluetooth pairing. Check all of its conditions before changing the general Phone Hub setup:

- The phone is currently unlocked.
- Bluetooth is enabled and the phone is near the Chromebook.
- A screen lock is configured on the phone.
- Both devices use the same Google Account.
- Both devices have internet access.
- Smart Lock verification has completed.
If Smart Lock shows Pending, select Verify to send another verification request. If the Chromebook still will not unlock after verification, restart both devices and test again. A successful Phone Hub connection does not guarantee that Smart Lock’s verification state is valid.
When the phone hotspot is missing
Turn on Bluetooth and keep the phone nearby. On the Chromebook, open the Wi-Fi menu and look under device hotspots for the phone. If it does not appear, reconnect the phone through Connected devices and repeat the hotspot check.
Hotspot use can drain the phone faster than normal Phone Hub activity and may count against the carrier’s mobile-data allowance. If the hotspot appears but browsing fails, check the phone’s mobile-data service and carrier restrictions separately; do not assume that a Phone Hub pairing problem is responsible.
What to do if the official steps do not work
Recheck the sequence after every major change: account, Bluetooth, updates, policy, toggles, pairing, and feature-specific conditions. Record the ChromeOS version, Android version, phone model, missing feature, and whether the phone appears under Connected devices. That information lets an administrator, Chromebook manufacturer, or Google support channel distinguish an unsupported combination from a local pairing fault.
A replacement Chromebook, replacement phone, Bluetooth adapter, or undocumented Chrome flag is not a justified first response to a missing Phone Hub feature. The supported recovery path is configuration, updates, removing a stale pairing, restarting, and administrator or manufacturer support when policy or compatibility is the cause.
