When an AI server overheats or slows down, first identify which component is hot, then capture temperature, clock, power and utilization data during the affected workload. A lower GPU clock does not prove thermal throttling: the driver may be enforcing a power limit. After correlating the telemetry, inspect the complete chassis airflow path, verify that the GPU model and count are supported, review management logs and firmware status, and escalate any continuing temperature rise or hardware fault through the server or GPU manufacturer’s service process.

Do not apply a generic temperature cutoff. Maximum operating temperature, throttle behavior and shutdown limits vary by exact GPU model and server design.

What GPU throttling means

Throttling is a protective control, not automatically a failed GPU. When a GPU reaches a defined thermal limit, its driver can reduce clocks and performance to hold the temperature down. If the temperature keeps rising despite that reduction, the system may shut down to prevent permanent damage. NVIDIA Support states: “If the GPU temperature continues to increase despite the performance throttling, the GPU will shutdown the system to prevent damage to the graphics card.” That statement is a safety behavior, not a universal temperature specification.

There is no single safe or unsafe number for every AI server. The limit depends on the exact GPU, its cooling design, the server chassis and the manufacturer’s operating guidance. NVIDIA TensorRT performance-measurement guidance describes thermal throttling at a predefined threshold “around 85 degrees Celsius for most GPUs,” but that figure is context-specific and should not be treated as an alarm, shutdown or warranty limit. Use the installed model’s current specification and the server manufacturer’s limits.

Also identify whether the warning concerns a GPU, CPU, memory module, voltage regulator, network adapter or chassis inlet. Each sensor has different limits, and a high inlet or power-component temperature can exist even while GPU temperature looks normal.

Thermal throttling versus power throttling

Reduced inference throughput or a falling clock can result from a power limit rather than excess heat. NVIDIA describes power throttling as the driver lowering clocks when average GPU power reaches the configured power limit. Thermal throttling is separate: temperature reaches a predefined threshold and clocks are reduced to control it.

Observation What it may indicate What to verify
Clock drops while temperature is rising toward the model’s limit Likely thermal control Temperature trend, thermal throttle status and airflow
Clock drops while power is at or near the GPU power limit Power-limit control, possibly by design Power limit, board power and reported throttle reason
Performance falls but temperature, power and utilization are unchanged Another bottleneck or workload change CPU, memory, storage, network and application logs
Temperature continues climbing after clocks fall Cooling failure or inadequate heat removal Fans, airflow path, installation and emergency alerts

Do not label an event “overheating” from a lower clock alone. Correlate the clock change with temperature and power measurements collected at the same time.

Step-by-step diagnostic sequence

1. Identify the hot component and exact hardware

Record the server model, GPU model and count, slot or riser location, operating system, driver version and the sensor that generated the alert. In a dense system, one GPU can be hot because of its position while another remains cool. Note whether the cards are passively cooled data-center models or actively cooled models with onboard fans; passive cards depend on the chassis to provide sufficient pressure and airflow through their heatsinks.

Match the sensor to the component manufacturer’s documentation before choosing a threshold. A chassis-inlet reading, a GPU-core reading and a memory-junction reading are not interchangeable.

2. Capture telemetry during the failing workload

For NVIDIA discrete-GPU systems, obtain a detailed state snapshot with:

nvidia-smi -q

During the affected inference or training run, NVIDIA’s TensorRT guidance uses this monitoring example:

nvidia-smi dmon -s pcu -f <FILE> -c <COUNT>

The dmon command logs power, clocks, temperature and utilization. Replace <FILE> with a writable log path and <COUNT> with enough samples to cover the event. The command and fields apply to systems supported by NVIDIA’s dGPU tooling; confirm availability on your platform.

Keep timestamps and preserve the logs. Repeat the same workload after each change so you can tell whether a fan-profile, airflow or configuration adjustment actually improved the condition.

3. Determine the throttle reason

Compare the temperature curve with clock, power and utilization samples. A clock reduction that coincides with the configured power cap is power throttling, even if the GPU is warm. A reduction that occurs as temperature reaches the model-specific thermal limit supports a thermal diagnosis. If the tool reports a throttle reason, record it rather than inferring one from throughput.

Check whether the workload itself changed. A smaller batch, lower utilization or an input pipeline stall can reduce clocks without any thermal event. Conversely, a sustained high-utilization workload can expose an airflow problem that remains hidden at idle.

4. Inspect the physical airflow path

Power off the system according to the server manufacturer’s service procedure before opening it. Check all of the following:

  • Front intakes and rear exhausts are unobstructed and the server is installed with the required clearance.
  • Every required fan spins, reports a normal status and is free of dust, cabling or debris.
  • Baffles, dividers, ducts and blanking panels are present and installed in the correct positions.
  • Air is directed through the GPU heatsink fins rather than around the cards.
  • GPU spacing, slot placement and risers match the supported configuration.
  • Adjacent cards, storage devices or cables are not blocking the intended inlet or exhaust path.

Inadequate layouts let air take an easier route around passive GPU heatsinks. NVIDIA’s certified-system material emphasizes that cooling depends on fan capacity and the physical placement of GPUs, baffles, dividers and risers. Generic fan curves may not account for the additional heat from an installed GPU set.

5. Verify server and GPU compatibility

Confirm that the exact server model supports the installed GPU model, quantity, risers, power cabling and thermal design. A chassis that supports one card may not support four; a firmware-supported card may still require a particular baffle or high-performance fan kit. Check the manufacturer’s compatibility matrix and service manual rather than relying on physical fit alone.

Do not casually change facility or chassis fan controls on a production system. Use supported settings and understand their effect on noise, power draw and other components. Adding a random fan to a passive GPU does not guarantee the pressure or flow needed through its heatsink.

6. Review logs, firmware and diagnostics

Inspect the server management controller and operating-system event logs for fan failures, temperature excursions, power events, corrected or uncorrected hardware errors and unexpected resets. On supported systems this may include the management interface, such as Dell iDRAC, plus the host logs.

Verify BIOS, management-controller and GPU firmware recommendations for the precise server and GPU combination. Use vendor-supported diagnostics; NVIDIA’s Data Center GPU Manager (DCGM) and nvidia-smi are examples of tools that can expose health and telemetry. Apply an update only when the server manufacturer documents it for your model and configuration; a blanket firmware update is not a substitute for diagnosis.

How to interpret temperatures and limits

Use this decision order when reading a temperature alert:

  1. Identify the sensor and component.
  2. Find the exact model’s maximum operating and emergency limits in current vendor documentation.
  3. Determine whether the value is a brief peak or a sustained trend under the affected workload.
  4. Correlate the value with clock changes, power-limit status and utilization.
  5. Compare readings across GPUs and across repeated runs of the same workload.

The approximately 85 °C figure sometimes quoted in TensorRT material is guidance for most GPUs in a performance-measurement context, not a universal alarm threshold. A model can throttle below or above that value, and a server manufacturer can impose additional limits based on chassis design. Record the model, measurement source and workload whenever you report a temperature.

Choose the remedy by diagnosed cause

Diagnosed cause Appropriate next action What not to do
Blocked intake, failed fan or missing airflow guide Restore the supported fan, duct, baffle, divider or blanking panel; clean and retest under the same workload Install an unverified consumer fan or leave the chassis open as a permanent solution
Unsupported GPU count, slot or riser Move to a documented configuration or involve the server manufacturer Assume that a card is safe because it fits mechanically
Power-limit throttling with normal temperature Check the configured power limit, power supplies, cabling and workload requirements Increase power limits without confirming platform and facility capacity
Firmware, sensor or management fault Follow the exact model’s firmware and diagnostic procedure Apply unrelated firmware packages or disable monitoring
Fan failure, damaged heatsink or repeated critical alert Stop stressing the system and open a vendor service case Continue production runs while temperature is rising

A compatible fan or airflow duct is useful only when the diagnosed problem is airflow and the accessory matches the chassis and GPU arrangement. It cannot correct an unsupported layout, failed hardware, a power cap or inadequate room cooling.

Common symptom branches

It overheats only under sustained training or inference

Capture a complete run rather than an idle snapshot. Compare the first minutes with the point at which clocks fall. If temperature rises steadily and airflow checks fail, correct the chassis path. If power reaches the configured limit while temperature remains within specification, investigate power and workload configuration instead.

One GPU is much hotter than the others

Check slot position, neighboring obstructions, riser orientation and whether air reaches that card’s heatsink. Swap positions only when the manufacturer’s procedure permits it; a repeatable hot slot points to chassis airflow, while a hot card that follows the card points toward the GPU or heatsink.

All GPUs report high temperature after maintenance

Look for a displaced baffle, missing blanking panel, reversed fan module, blocked filter or cable bundle covering the intake. Confirm that every fan is recognized by the management controller and that the service procedure restored the original airflow guides.

Temperature is normal but throughput is low

Inspect power-limit status first, then CPU, memory, storage and network utilization. A power cap can intentionally reduce GPU clocks without an overheating condition. Preserve telemetry before changing limits so the resulting behavior can be evaluated.

The system shuts down during a thermal event

Treat an unexpected shutdown after rising temperature as a protective action. Do not immediately restart a heavily loaded job. Check logs for the final sensor and fan state, inspect for physical damage and follow the vendor’s recovery and service instructions.

When to stop troubleshooting and escalate

Escalate through the server or GPU manufacturer when temperature continues to rise after throttling, critical thermal alerts recur, a fan fails, the system shuts down unexpectedly, or you find damaged components. Also escalate when the supported GPU count, baffle arrangement or firmware status is unclear. Provide the service team with the server and GPU identifiers, configuration, timestamps, nvidia-smi -q output, dmon logs, management-controller events and a description of any airflow changes.

Preventing repeat events

  • Keep a documented inventory of GPU models, slot positions, risers, power supplies, firmware and supported counts.
  • Monitor temperature, clocks, power, utilization and throttle reasons together, not as isolated alerts.
  • Set alerts on sustained trends and fan failures, using model-specific limits.
  • Include baffles, ducts, dividers and blanking panels in maintenance checklists.
  • Test representative production workloads after hardware, firmware, fan-profile or rack changes.
  • Record facility conditions and inlet temperature when comparing incidents.

This process separates expected protective throttling from a cooling, configuration, power or component fault while preserving the evidence needed for a safe fix.
