If a learning platform suggests a lesson, quiz, or resource that does not fit your knowledge or goal, do not assume you are the problem—or that the algorithm is automatically broken. First document the mismatch, then check the learner information and activity the system may have used, look for repeated or unequal effects, review privacy and security, and ask an educator or administrator to assess the recommendation with you. The exact correction, explanation, or appeal process depends on the platform and institution.
Why a learning platform can recommend the wrong thing
An AI recommendation is the result of a chain: information about a learner is collected, a model or rule interprets that information, and the platform turns the result into a suggested next step. A poor recommendation can originate at any point in that chain.
- Input data may be incomplete or stale. A platform may not reflect a recently changed goal, a transfer from another course, an assessment completed outside the system, or a change in learning circumstances.
- The information may be misleading. A skipped activity can mean “already knows this,” “the activity was inaccessible,” “the learner was interrupted,” or simply “the learner did not click the right button.” Those meanings are not interchangeable.
- The model or rules may be poorly suited to the task. A system optimized for completion or test performance may suggest material that does not match a learner’s actual objective, such as preparing for a particular project or filling a specific knowledge gap.
- Bias can enter through data and design. UNESCO’s AI and education: Guidance for policy-makers reproduces the Beijing Consensus warning: “Be cognizant that AI applications can impose different kinds of bias that are inherent in the data the technology is trained on and uses as input, as well as in the way that the processes and algorithms are constructed and used.”
- Human use can magnify a weak suggestion. If a teacher, tutor, or learner treats an automated suggestion as a decision rather than an input, an explainable mismatch can become a harmful placement or missed opportunity.
One surprising suggestion does not, by itself, prove discrimination, a defective model, or a legal violation. It is evidence that deserves a context-aware review.

- Save the recommendation. Record the title or identifier of the lesson, practice activity, video, reading, or next step. If the platform shows a reason, score, or confidence statement, save that too.
- State the learner’s goal. Write what the learner was trying to accomplish at that moment: for example, review fractions before a test, begin an advanced programming project, or obtain an accessible alternative to a visual activity.
- Explain the mismatch in observable terms. Note whether the material was far below or above the learner’s level, unrelated to the course, inaccessible, in the wrong language, or inconsistent with an accommodation or stated objective.
- Add context without oversharing. Include the course, task, and date. Do not put sensitive educational or health information into a public forum or an unapproved report. Use the institution’s approved channel.
This description separates the learner’s experience from an assumption about the algorithm’s internal reasoning. You can ask for that reasoning later; you do not need to invent it now.
Check the information the system may have used
Ask an educator or platform administrator what categories of information feed recommendations. The platform may not reveal model details, but it should be possible to discuss whether the relevant learner record is accurate and current.
Look for stale or missing learning evidence
- Recent assessment results, completed work, or teacher feedback may not have synchronized.
- Work completed outside the platform may be invisible to the recommendation system.
- A course enrollment, learning objective, language preference, accessibility need, or support plan may be missing or attached to the wrong class.
- A single unusual event—such as abandoning a difficult quiz—may be treated as a stable signal.
Separate activity from ability
Clicking, time-on-task, retries, and completion status are behavioral signals, not direct measurements of understanding. A learner can finish quickly because the material is easy, because they guessed, or because they skipped the explanation. Conversely, a long time on a page can indicate interest, confusion, an access barrier, or a technical problem. Ask which interpretation the platform is making and whether an educator can correct the underlying record.
Recommended Free Tools
Ask whether the objective is represented
Recommendations are only as relevant as the goal they are trying to serve. “Next activity for this course” is different from “prepare for tomorrow’s exam,” “build a missing prerequisite,” or “offer an accessible alternative.” Ask the educator or administrator which objective the recommendation is meant to support and whether the learner can state a different objective.

The U.S. Department of Education’s 2023 report, Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Teaching and Learning: Insights and Recommendations, identifies poor or inappropriate data and algorithmic bias as risks. That makes data review a first diagnostic step, not an optional technical exercise.
Look for a pattern, not just one bad suggestion
A single mismatch warrants review, but a pattern provides stronger evidence about what needs fixing. Keep a dated log of comparable examples: the recommendation, the learner’s goal, the relevant evidence, and the outcome after a human corrected or followed the suggestion.
Compare like with like
Compare recommendations made for learners with similar course goals and demonstrated knowledge. If the same type of learner repeatedly receives irrelevant or lower-level material, ask an administrator to examine the configuration, data pipeline, and evaluation process. Avoid inferring a cause from a small anecdote; the point of the log is to make a fair assessment possible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck for unequal effects
Ask whether mismatches cluster around a group, course, language, disability accommodation, device type, or other relevant circumstance. The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights resource Avoiding the Discriminatory Use of Artificial Intelligence, indexed in November 2024 for K–12 and higher-education communities, treats systems that make predictions, recommendations, or decisions as AI uses that require nondiscriminatory attention.

Do not label an outcome unlawful from an anecdote. A qualified institutional reviewer must consider the facts, comparison group, applicable rules, and whether the system or its use caused the effect.
Ask how the recommendation is supposed to help
Request a plain-language explanation from the person responsible for the course or platform. Useful questions include:
- What learning objective is this recommendation intended to support?
- Which learner information or activity was considered?
- Is the recommendation generated by a model, a fixed rule, or a combination?
- Can an educator correct inaccurate information, mark the suggestion as unsuitable, or override it?
- How will the correction affect future recommendations?
Responsible-use guidance does not guarantee that every product offers a detailed explanation or an edit button. If the platform cannot expose its rationale, a human can still compare the suggestion with the learner’s work and goal and decide whether to use it.
Review privacy and security alongside quality
A recommendation can be educationally useful and still rely on excessive or poorly protected data. Ask the institution or vendor:

- What learner information is collected for recommendations?
- Is information about assessments, behavior, accommodations, language, or other sensitive circumstances included?

UNESCO’s 2019 policy guidance and its Guidance for generative AI in education and research (published 7 September 2023; page last updated 16 January 2026) emphasize privacy, security, responsible governance, and a human-centred approach. The generative-AI guidance should be applied cautiously to recommendation systems, but its questions about data protection and institutional validation are directly relevant.
Privacy duties vary by location, institution, age, and the type of information involved. The available evidence does not establish a universal legal remedy or a single retention period. Ask your institution which rules and policies apply before sending detailed records.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a human decision, not an automated verdict
A teacher, tutor, learning-support professional, or administrator can inspect the learner’s work, stated goal, and circumstances together. Treat the AI output as one input to that judgment. A human should be able to choose a different activity, explain why, and document the reason when the recommendation conflicts with the learning objective.

Choose the response based on the evidence
| What you find | Most useful next action | Who should be involved |
|---|---|---|
| One isolated mismatch and accurate learner data | Ask the educator to select an appropriate alternative and record the context. | Learner and educator |
| Stale, missing, or incorrect learner information | Request correction through the institution’s approved process, then ask whether recommendations can be regenerated. | Learner, educator, platform administrator |
| Repeated mismatches across a course or group | Provide dated examples and request a review of configuration, data flow, and evaluation. | Educator, administrator, and vendor support if needed |
| Unequal effects on learners or groups | Escalate for a nondiscrimination and accessibility review; do not make a legal conclusion from the examples alone. | Institutional leadership, civil-rights or accessibility staff where available |
| Unclear collection, access, or retention of learner data | Ask for the privacy notice, data-use explanation, retention details, and security contact. | Institutional privacy or data-protection officer |
| No effective human review or correction route | Request an approved escalation path and document the lack of response. | Platform administrator and institutional leadership |
These choices are not competing products or universal settings. They are decision paths based on whether the issue is isolated, data-related, systemic, unequal, privacy-related, or missing human oversight.
Escalate with a concise, privacy-aware report
If the mismatch persists, send a focused report through the approved support channel. Include enough evidence to reproduce the issue without exposing unnecessary personal information.
Date and course:
Recommendation shown:
Learner’s stated goal:
Why the recommendation appears unsuitable:
Relevant, non-sensitive evidence (assessment, completed work, or context):
Is this a repeated pattern? If yes, list dates or comparable cases:
What correction or human review is requested:
Ask specifically whether the record can be corrected, whether the recommendation can be overridden, what information was used, and when you should expect a response. Do not assume that contacting a general help desk automatically triggers a privacy, accessibility, or civil-rights review; use the institution’s named process when one exists.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Deleting activity at random. Removing history can destroy useful evidence and may make future recommendations less accurate.
- Trying to “train” the system through misleading clicks. Artificial activity can compound the original problem.
- Posting identifiable learner details publicly. Share only the minimum information through an approved channel.
- Assuming confidence means correctness. A score or fluent explanation is not proof that the recommendation fits the learner.
- Calling one mismatch discrimination. Document the pattern and ask a qualified reviewer to assess unequal effects.
- Expecting a universal menu path. Controls differ by platform, edition, institution, and role. Product-specific steps must come from the platform’s current documentation or administrator.
What a good resolution looks like
The immediate resolution may simply be a different activity chosen by an educator. A durable resolution goes further: the learner record is corrected when necessary, the reason for the mismatch is understood, privacy questions are answered, and a human can override the system when context matters. If several learners are affected, the institution should examine the pattern rather than treating each report as an isolated user error.
UNESCO’s policy work, the U.S. Department of Education’s 2023 teaching-and-learning report, the Office for Civil Rights’ November 2024 resource, and the Department’s 2025 stakeholder-focused announcement point to the same practical standard: educational AI should support learning goals under accountable human oversight, with attention to bias, privacy, security, and affected communities. They identify risk areas and responsible-use principles; they do not establish the root cause of any particular recommendation.
