If a new Steam RPG will not open, closes immediately, or crashes after loading, start with a computer and Steam restart. Then check that the game supports your operating system and that your computer meets its requirements; install available operating-system and graphics-driver updates; verify the game’s files in Steam; and temporarily close non-essential software. These are general checks, not a diagnosis: the right fix depends on the specific game, error, and computer.
Use the steps below in order, noting what changes after each one. If the problem continues, follow the game developer’s current support guidance rather than trying risky generic fixes.
What to check when a new Steam RPG won’t launch or crashes
“New” can mean newly released, newly installed, or simply new to your library. The same initial checks apply, but a just-released game may have title-specific requirements or support notes that matter. Steam cautions that launch failures can be difficult to diagnose because users have many different hardware and software configurations. No single symptom identifies a universal cause.
First identify the failure stage: does Steam stay at “Preparing to Launch,” does the game window appear and close, does it reach a menu before crashing, or does it fail during play? Also note whether the issue affects only this RPG or several games. Those details help you choose what to check and report; they are clues, not proof of a particular cause. Steam’s general guidance covers games that do not launch and related launch problems.

Keep a short troubleshooting log. Write down the time of each attempt, the exact wording of any message, and whether the result changed after a restart, update, file check, or software shutdown. That prevents repeated steps and gives a developer a reproducible sequence.
1. Restart the computer and Steam
Save any open work, restart the computer, then open Steam and try the game again. A fresh restart is the starting point in Steam’s general troubleshooting guidance. It is a reversible first check, not evidence that a particular underlying problem has been fixed.
If Steam itself appears stuck, fully exit and reopen it before launching the RPG. If the same failure returns, move on rather than repeating restarts without recording whether anything changed. Make sure Steam has finished any visible download, update, or installation task before you test again.

2. Confirm the game supports your operating system and hardware
Open the RPG’s Steam store page and check its listed operating-system support and system requirements. Compare the requirements with the computer you are using, including the relevant processor, memory, graphics hardware, and operating-system details shown for that game. Do not assume that a title supports Windows, Linux, and macOS equally simply because Steam runs on your computer.
Steam warns that a computer at or just below a game’s requirements may have launch or performance trouble. Requirements are specific to the title, so a general Steam troubleshooting page cannot establish whether a particular RPG will run on your setup. If your system does not meet the listed requirements or the game does not list your operating system as supported, file repair or driver updates do not change that compatibility information.
Check the store page for both minimum and recommended specifications, where both are provided, and compare the operating-system version as well as hardware. A game that starts below recommended specifications may still have poor performance, while a system below minimum specifications may not launch reliably. Treat those labels as the game publisher’s requirements, not as a guarantee that every configuration will behave identically.

3. Install operating-system and graphics-driver updates
Check for applicable updates for your operating system and graphics driver. Steam’s general advice is to update Windows and drivers on Windows, Linux and graphics drivers on Linux, and macOS on Mac. The exact supported operating-system version and driver depend on both the computer’s hardware and the RPG.

These are platform-specific routes, not a recommendation to install an arbitrary package from an unverified site.
Use the update process appropriate to your operating system and graphics hardware; Steam’s general page does not prescribe a single driver or version for every computer. After installing updates, restart if prompted, then try the game once more. If you cannot tell which graphics hardware or driver applies, record the computer’s model and operating-system details for the game’s support team instead of installing a driver based on a guess.
4. Verify the game’s files in Steam
Steam’s built-in file check compares the installed game files and can help identify files that need attention. The menu path is:
- Open Library in Steam.
- Right-click the RPG, or open its gear/menu control, and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and let the check finish.
Steam says verification can take several minutes. Avoid running it while other system-intensive work is underway, and do not start verification for multiple games at once. If Steam finds files that need replacing, allow its process to complete before launching the game again. Wait for Steam to report completion rather than interrupting the check partway through.
A message that one or more files failed to verify does not automatically mean the installation is broken. Steam explains that this can be normal because some local configuration files should not be replaced. Read the result in that context rather than treating every failed-file message as proof that the check failed. Verification is a file comparison and repair step; it does not confirm that your operating system, hardware, or a third-party program is compatible. 5. Temporarily close non-essential software
Software running alongside a game can sometimes interfere with launch. As a diagnostic check, save your work and temporarily close non-essential applications, then try the RPG again. Change one thing at a time where practical; if the game launches, you will have a more useful clue about what to investigate. Include background tools that are not needed for the test, but keep the change limited and reversible.
This is not a reason to disable security protections or assume that an overlay, antivirus product, or other application is responsible. Steam lists antivirus interference as one possible explanation for a missing executable, alongside corrupted files or a failed download, but the symptom alone does not identify which applies. If a security tool flags a specific file, preserve protection and follow that vendor’s instructions before deciding whether the file is safe. Steam’s guidance on missing game executables describes these as possible causes, not a universal diagnosis.
If closing one application changes the result, note the application name and restore normal settings before seeking guidance from the game or security vendor. Do not remove folders or permanently whitelist files solely because a launch attempt failed.

6. Use the failure stage and error message to choose the next step
If you see an error, record its complete wording or code before closing it. If there is no message, write down the last visible stage: for example, whether Steam remains at “Preparing to Launch,” whether a game window briefly appears, or whether the crash occurs after a menu or during play. The distinction helps support staff understand what failed without turning a symptom into an unsupported diagnosis.
Steam reports that a third-party game is unavailable
For a third-party game reported as unavailable, Steam suggests trying the game’s executable or launcher from its installation folder to see whether it displays a more specific error. This is a way to gather information, not a general instruction to alter or delete installation files. If you are unsure which file is the correct launcher, consult the game’s own support directions. Steam’s unavailable-game guidance addresses this case.
Steam reports a missing executable
Do not download a replacement executable or DLL from an unrelated site. Steam’s missing-executable guidance identifies several possible explanations, including software interference, corrupted files, or a failed download, without establishing which one caused an individual failure. Verify the files using the steps above, note any security alert, and use the game developer’s instructions if the error remains.

The game crashes only after it has opened
Record when it crashes: before the title screen, after loading a save, or during play. Then make sure you have checked the game’s listed requirements and applicable operating-system and graphics-driver updates. Steam’s broad launch guidance does not establish a fix for a crash tied to a particular scene, save, or in-game action; that pattern is useful information for the developer. Mention whether the crash is repeatable at the same point and whether a new launch behaves differently.

If more than one game has the same problem, include that pattern in your notes because it distinguishes a broader launch issue from one limited to this title. If only the RPG fails, its store-page requirements and developer support are particularly relevant. Neither pattern proves a cause, so continue with the reversible checks and report what you observed.
7. Gather useful details before contacting the developer
If the general checks do not resolve the problem, contact the game’s developer or publisher through its current support channel. Steam directs users to the developer for in-depth help with persistent game-specific launch issues. A concise report with reproducible details is more useful than saying only that the game crashes.
- The exact game title and version, if available.
- Your operating system and relevant computer hardware.
- The full error text or code, or a description of the last visible launch stage.
- When the crash occurs and whether the game has ever launched successfully.
- Whether other games are affected and which checks you have already tried.
Include the Steam installation location or launcher wording only if the developer asks for it, and follow its instructions for privacy-sensitive logs. Follow the developer’s directions for diagnostic files; do not assume every RPG uses the same reporting process. For example, Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting article describes saving DxDiag.txt with the DirectX Diagnostic Tool and notes that a CrashReport folder may be created after a crash for its game. Those are Capcom-specific directions, not universal requirements for Steam RPGs.
What not to do without game-specific guidance
A launch failure by itself is not a sound reason to delete game folders, change BIOS settings, or download DLL files. Those actions can introduce new problems and are not part of Steam’s general first-line advice. Keep to reversible checks, preserve error messages, and use the developer’s instructions for steps that depend on the particular game or hardware.

What does “one or more files failed to verify” mean?
Steam says this message can be normal because local configuration files may not be replaced. It is not automatic proof that the installation is broken. Let verification finish, then test the game and follow the developer’s guidance if the failure continues.
Should I disable my antivirus or download a missing DLL?
No. Steam lists security-software interference as one possible cause of a missing executable, but it does not identify the cause in an individual case. Keep security protection enabled, follow the security vendor’s instructions for a flagged file, and never download replacement DLLs from unrelated sites.
What information should I send game support?
Provide the exact title and version, operating system, relevant hardware, complete error text or code, failure stage, whether the game ever launched, whether other games are affected, and the checks you already tried. Send diagnostic files only in the format the developer requests.
