Before you discard the box, verify the laptop’s exact model and configuration, inspect it for shipping damage, confirm the charger and included items, complete the operating system’s first-run setup, install updates offered for that device, and test the functions you will actually use. Then run the manufacturer’s built-in diagnostics when your model supports them.
This process catches many obvious problems, but it is not a certification that the laptop is defect-free. A short inspection cannot rule out every intermittent or latent fault, and diagnostic coverage differs by operating system, model, processor generation, country, and software version.
1. Check the shipment before turning the laptop on
Do the receiving inspection while the package is still easy to return or exchange. Keep the shipping carton, inner packaging, charger box, manuals, and any included accessories until the initial checks are complete. Packaging is useful evidence if the device arrived damaged, and an accessory that appears missing may be tucked into a separate compartment.

Verify the order against the device
- Compare the model name, processor, memory, storage capacity, display size or resolution, keyboard layout, and operating-system edition with the order confirmation.
- Check the serial number or service tag on the chassis or packaging against the purchase record where applicable.
- Look for mismatched configuration details, such as less memory or storage than ordered, a different display panel, or a regional keyboard layout you did not select.
Inspect for visible damage
Under good light, examine the lid, corners, hinges, palm rest, underside, screen bezel, ports, and charger cable. Look for cracks, dents, deep scratches, bent connectors, loose panels, or a hinge that binds or moves unevenly. Do not force a port or hinge to determine whether it works. Photograph any damage, including the shipping carton, before powering on.

Confirm the included items
Identify the laptop, the correct AC adapter and power cable, detachable plugs or regional adapters, and any items promised in the listing. Some models ship with a compact adapter or a USB-C charger rather than a conventional barrel connector. Use the documentation for the exact model to determine what should be present; there is no universal accessory bundle.
2. Connect power and perform the first startup
First-start and charging instructions are model-specific. Follow the laptop’s manual rather than applying a rule from another brand. ASUS, for example, recommends connecting the included AC adapter before the first startup and notes that battery-storage protection can affect the first start. Its charging intervals and reset sequence are ASUS guidance, not a universal requirement for every laptop.
- Place the laptop on a stable, dry surface with its vents unobstructed.
- Connect the supplied adapter to the laptop and a suitable outlet, following the model manual.
- Press the power button once and wait through the initial firmware and operating-system screens. A first boot can take longer than later boots.
- If nothing appears, check the outlet, adapter connections, charging indicator, and the model’s documented power-reset procedure. Do not repeatedly hold the power button unless the manual instructs you to do so.
If the machine starts only when connected to power, shows an unusual charging message, or shuts down immediately, record exactly what happens. A battery-storage mode, an uncharged battery, a connection problem, or a hardware fault can look similar during the first minutes.

3. Complete the operating system’s first-run setup
The out-of-box assistant establishes the account, network, accessibility, privacy, and security choices that shape later use. Screen labels and requirements vary by operating-system release, region, and device.

Windows notebooks
Windows notebooks use the Windows out-of-box experience (OOBE). MSI’s published Windows OOBE guide is a vendor-specific reference, while the exact prompts depend on the installed Windows release and configuration.
- Select the country or region and keyboard layout, adding a second layout only if you need it.
- Connect to Wi-Fi or wired networking when prompted. Confirm that the network name is yours before entering credentials.
- Sign in with or create the account you intend to use. Review whether the setup offers device backup, synchronization, advertising personalization, location, diagnostic-data, or voice-assistant settings.
- Choose accessibility options deliberately. You can change them later, but enabling a feature accidentally can make the first desktop confusing.
- Create a strong sign-in method and save recovery information in a secure place. If the setup offers a device-encryption or recovery-key step, follow the on-screen instructions and retain the key.
Mac notebooks
Apple’s Setup Assistant guides owners through starting a new MacBook. It asks for region, keyboard, network, account, privacy, and migration choices. You can migrate from another Mac or backup when appropriate, but a clean start is simpler if you are checking a new machine for faults.
- Choose language, region, and keyboard settings.
- Connect to a trusted network and sign in with the Apple Account you plan to use.
- Review location, analytics, Siri, privacy, and screen-time choices instead of accepting every option without reading it.
- Decide whether to transfer data now. If you do, allow the transfer to finish before judging performance; indexing and updates can make a freshly migrated Mac feel busy.
Do not confuse an account or setup prompt with a hardware failure. If the display, keyboard, or trackpad works in the setup assistant but fails later, note the exact application and conditions.

4. Install operating-system updates, then check again
Updates can deliver security fixes, device drivers, firmware components, and compatibility corrections. Install the updates offered for your specific device before drawing conclusions from a first-day test.

Windows 11 update procedure
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, then install the applicable updates offered for the laptop.
- Restart whenever Windows requests it. Some updates do not finish until after a restart.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and check again. A second pass can reveal updates that become available only after an earlier package or driver is installed.
Microsoft explains that Windows 11 availability can be staged and depends on compatibility. A device may therefore receive an update later than another apparently similar laptop. Microsoft also warns that a clean installation from installation media removes files and applications. A clean install is not a routine first-day step when the machine already has a working factory installation; use it only for a deliberate recovery or reinstallation plan with backups.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. If a new purchase is supplied with Windows 10, confirm the seller’s stated upgrade path and the hardware’s Windows 11 compatibility rather than assuming that support continues indefinitely.
macOS update procedure
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Allow the Mac to check for updates compatible with that model.
- Install the offered update and connect power if the installer requests it.
- Restart when prompted, then open Software Update again to see whether another compatible update remains.
Apple states that Software Update offers software compatible with the Mac model. The absence of an offered release does not mean every Mac receives every macOS version; hardware support and rollout timing determine what appears.

Use ordinary tasks to check the parts you can see and touch. These are functional checks, not calibrated benchmarks. Test against simple conditions and record what you observe rather than relying on a vague impression that something feels wrong.

Test after updates have completed, because a driver installation can change behavior. If a function fails, try one known-good accessory or cable when available, then document the result. Do not label a port defective solely because one unverified cable does not work.
6. Use the laptop maker’s diagnostics when available
Built-in diagnostics run checks that a manual inspection cannot. They can identify a potential fault or return a useful code, but they do not all test the same components and are not interchangeable across brands or models.

Running a pre-boot diagnostic
- Save open work and disconnect nonessential peripherals.
- Read the support page for the exact model to find the documented key combination or startup route. Do not assume an ASUS, HP, and Apple procedure is the same.
- Run the relevant component tests, allowing each one to finish without interrupting power.
- Save the pass/fail result, reference number, or on-screen wording. Photograph the screen if the result cannot be exported.
- Restart normally and compare the diagnostic result with the manual symptom.
A passing diagnostic does not prove that an intermittent fault is absent, while a failed test is strong evidence that you should seek model-specific support. Record which test failed, not merely that “diagnostics failed.”
7. What to do when a check fails
Separate setup problems from reproducible hardware symptoms before contacting support. A missing permission, muted output, wrong keyboard layout, or uninstalled driver can mimic a defect.

Make a concise evidence record
- Write the model, serial number or service tag, operating-system version, and date.
- Describe the exact action that causes the problem and whether it happens every time.
- Note whether the laptop is on battery or AC power, connected to a peripheral, or running after an update.
- Photograph visible damage and screen artifacts. Capture a short video for intermittent clicks, flicker, or charging behavior when safe to do so.
- Save the diagnostic report, failure ID, or reference code. Apple specifically advises retaining its diagnostic reference code when seeking service.
Choose the appropriate help route
- For a missing item, shipping damage, wrong configuration, or an early reproducible fault, contact the seller promptly and ask which exchange or return process applies.
- For a diagnostic failure or a problem that persists after the basic checks, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service channel with the evidence and code.
- Follow the instructions you receive for data backup, shipping, inspection, or repair. Do not open the chassis or replace parts while an exchange or warranty decision is pending unless the support provider directs you to do so.
There is no universal return deadline or warranty period. Terms vary by seller, country, product category, and purchase channel, so rely on the order terms and the support provider’s written instructions rather than a generic number found elsewhere.
8. Common mistakes that make first-day checks less useful
- Discarding the packaging immediately: Keep it until the inspection and any early support conversation are complete.
- Using another model’s charging advice: First-start behavior, storage protection, reset sequences, and charging recommendations are manufacturer-specific.
- Performing a clean Windows installation as “maintenance”: Microsoft warns that installation media can remove files and apps. Update the factory installation first unless you have a deliberate, backed-up reinstallation plan.
- Testing only the desktop: Check the display, keyboard, touchpad, camera, microphone, audio, network, charging, and the ports you depend on.
- Treating a benchmark or short session as a diagnosis: This checklist is designed to find obvious functional problems, not to certify performance or rule out latent defects.
- Reporting only “it is broken”: A symptom, reproduction step, photograph, and diagnostic code let support distinguish configuration issues from hardware failures.
- Assuming every diagnostic menu exists: ASUS, HP, and Apple tools differ, and availability can depend on model, processor generation, country, and OS release.
9. Completion checklist
Mark the process complete only after the following items are documented:
- Model and configuration match the order.
- No unexplained shipping or chassis damage is visible, and photographs exist for any concern.
- The expected charger and included items are present.
- The laptop starts using the model’s documented procedure.
- Windows OOBE or macOS Setup Assistant is complete with intentional account, network, accessibility, and privacy choices.
- All applicable operating-system updates have been installed, the laptop has restarted as required, and the update screen has been checked again.
- The display, keyboard, touchpad, speakers, microphone, camera, Wi-Fi, charging, and required ports have been tested.
- The available manufacturer diagnostic has been run, or its absence for the exact model has been confirmed.
- Any failure has a written symptom, supporting photograph or video where useful, and a saved diagnostic result or code.
- The seller or manufacturer has been contacted when a problem remains, using the applicable exchange, return, warranty, or service instructions.
When the first-day check is complete
A new laptop is ready for normal use when its identity and accessories match the order, setup and updates finish normally, everyday functions work as expected, and any available diagnostics produce no relevant failure. Keep your evidence until you are satisfied that the machine is stable. If a symptom returns, the notes and reference code will make the next support conversation faster and more precise.
