A 2.5GbE port that shows a 1Gbps link is not automatically defective. First read the negotiated link rate in the operating system, then verify that the switch or router port, cable path, and other endpoint can actually run 2.5GbE. Test a known-good cable and another port with both sides set to Auto Negotiation. Only after the symptom follows the mini PC across known-good links should you move on to its model-specific LAN driver, BIOS, or possible hardware fault.
What a 1Gbps result actually tells you
Ethernet establishes a link with the device at the other end. The link settles on a mode that both endpoints and every relevant physical segment can support. Therefore, a mini PC with a 2.5GbE-capable network controller can legitimately establish a 1Gbps link when it is connected to a 1Gbps switch port, a limited router port, or a path that cannot complete 2.5GbE negotiation. Intel’s NUC guidance treats checking the far-end device and comparing other devices as an early diagnostic step, rather than assuming the mini PC is faulty (Intel’s NUC LAN troubleshooting article, reviewed October 22, 2025).
That negotiated link rate is different from an internet speed-test result. A speed test measures throughput to a remote service and can be lower because of the internet connection, server, congestion, protocol overhead, or other traffic. Use the operating system’s Ethernet link-rate field to determine what the local cable connection negotiated.

1. Read the negotiated rate in the operating system
On the Windows 10 NUC scenario documented by Intel, open Network and Internet Settings, select the Ethernet connection, open Network Properties, and read Link speed (Receive/Transmit). The exact labels and location can vary by Windows release, Linux distribution, or another operating system, but the diagnostic target is the adapter’s negotiated link rate, not a browser speed-test number. Record the result before changing anything.

If the field already says 2.5Gbps, the Ethernet link has negotiated correctly and a slower internet test points to a different bottleneck. If it says 1Gbps, continue with the physical and configuration checks below.
2. Confirm the capability of both endpoints
Inspect the exact port to which the mini PC is connected. A router or switch may contain a mixture of 1GbE and 2.5GbE sockets, and a port’s label or product specification is more reliable than the chassis model name. Check the mini PC’s exact model specification as well: some systems in the same product family have different network controllers or port options.
Include every intermediate segment in the check. A wall jack, patch panel, dock, or second switch can become the limiting link even when the mini PC and the main switch both advertise 2.5GbE. For a clean test, connect the mini PC directly to a confirmed 2.5GbE port on a known-capable peer or switch. Intel’s general speed guidance also recommends checking the device on the other side and comparing behavior with other systems (Intel’s I219-V performance article, reviewed July 13, 2022).
3. Substitute a known-working cable
Replace the current patch lead with one that is already known to achieve 2.5GbE on another device. Intel’s I225-V troubleshooting procedure recommends a known-working cable, preferably Cat5e or higher, and testing another router port (Intel’s I225-V cable-detection article, reviewed August 8, 2022). That recommendation is a test method, not a promise that a cable’s printed category alone guarantees 2.5GbE. Cable condition, termination quality, installed distance, and the far-end port still matter.

Move only one variable at a time: keep the mini PC and switch port unchanged while swapping the cable, then check the negotiated rate again. A change from 1Gbps to 2.5Gbps implicates the original cable or its terminations.
4. Try a different switch or router port
Use a port that is explicitly confirmed as 2.5GbE. If the equipment has several multi-gigabit ports, test at least one other. A port can be administratively limited, damaged, or connected internally through a different chipset even when another socket on the same box works at 2.5GbE.
When possible, connect another 2.5GbE device to the suspect cable and port. If that device also negotiates at 1Gbps, the mini PC is unlikely to be the cause. If another device reaches 2.5Gbps but the mini PC does not, retain the same cable and port for the next software checks.
5. Leave Speed & Duplex on Auto Negotiation
Open the mini PC’s Ethernet adapter properties and find the setting commonly labeled Speed & Duplex. Set it to Auto Negotiation on the mini PC and, where the switch or router exposes a similar control, use automatic negotiation there too. Intel’s I225-V support resolution states: “Recommended setting is Auto Negotiation. Forcing link can result in a speed-duplex mismatch.”

Forcing 2.5Gbps on one side while the link partner remains on auto-negotiation can prevent a proper match or produce an unexpected mode. Return both sides to automatic operation before judging the cable, port, or adapter.
6. Power-cycle the link after physical changes
After changing a cable, moving ports, or restoring auto-negotiation, shut down or restart the mini PC and power-cycle the network equipment according to its normal procedure. This clears a stale link state and ensures that both interfaces renegotiate from the new conditions. Treat the restart as a way to validate a change, not as evidence that the original component was defective.
7. Run a controlled A/B test
Use the following matrix and change one item at a time. Record the negotiated rate after each connection.
| Test | What stays fixed | What changes | How to interpret the result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini PC, alternate cable | Mini PC and confirmed 2.5GbE port | Known-good cable | Only the original cable or its termination is implicated if the rate rises to 2.5Gbps. |
| Another device on the suspect path | Cable and switch/router port | Endpoint device | If both devices negotiate at 1Gbps, investigate the path or port before the mini PC. |
| Mini PC on a second confirmed 2.5GbE port | Mini PC and known-good cable | Switch/router port | A higher rate on the second port points to the original port or its configuration. |
| Direct known-capable peer | Mini PC and known-good cable | Intermediate network equipment removed | Persistent 1Gbps on a direct 2.5GbE link makes the mini PC’s software, firmware, or hardware the leading suspects. |
This cross-device comparison is an inference from Intel’s alternate-cable, alternate-port, and other-system checks; it is useful because the symptom either follows the mini PC or stays with the network path.

8. Update the exact model’s LAN driver and BIOS
If the mini PC remains at 1Gbps on a known-good cable and confirmed 2.5GbE port, install the latest LAN driver and BIOS supplied for that exact model. Intel recommends current LAN drivers and BIOS for its cited NUC case. On an OEM mini PC, prefer the manufacturer’s package when available: Intel notes that a generic driver may not include system-specific changes, so the OEM’s release can be the appropriate one (Intel’s NUC guidance).
Before updating, note the current BIOS version, operating-system edition, and adapter name. Use the vendor’s documented update process, keep the system on reliable power, and reboot when instructed. Do not substitute a driver intended for a different controller or mini PC revision simply because the product names look similar.
Advanced adapter settings: use them only when documented
Some Intel adapters expose additional advertised-speed controls. Intel documents selecting 2.5G to advertise 2.5G as the only speed in auto-negotiation for a specific X550-T1 adapter and driver context (Intel’s 2.5Gbps/5Gbps configuration article, reviewed April 13, 2023). That setting is not general advice for every 2.5GbE mini PC. It should be used only when the adapter’s own documentation identifies the option and the link partner is known to support it.

How to decide what needs replacing
The network path is the bottleneck
If another 2.5GbE device also settles at 1Gbps on the same cable and port, or the mini PC reaches 2.5Gbps immediately after moving to a confirmed multi-gigabit port, do not replace the mini PC. Check the switch, router, wall run, and port configuration. A 2.5GbE unmanaged switch is a sensible upgrade only when the existing switch or router port has been confirmed as the 1GbE limit and the rest of the path can use the extra rate.
The cable or termination is the bottleneck
If a known-good replacement cable changes the result while the endpoints remain fixed, replace the suspect patch lead or repair the installed termination. Choose a cable with sound connectors and a verified working history rather than relying only on a category marking. The available Intel guidance supports substitution testing, not a universal cable-length or category guarantee for every installation.
The mini PC remains the outlier
If the same mini PC negotiates at 1Gbps through multiple known-good cables, ports, and a direct 2.5GbE peer while another device succeeds on those paths, concentrate on the mini PC. Recheck Auto Negotiation, install the exact OEM LAN driver and BIOS, and compare the adapter’s reported model with the specification for that unit. Only after those checks should you consider a built-in NIC fault or a warranty repair; the cited support material does not establish a universal failure rate or justify replacing hardware as the first step.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon mistakes that lead to the wrong diagnosis
- Using an internet speed test as the link-rate reading: a remote throughput result cannot tell you whether the local Ethernet link is 1Gbps or 2.5Gbps.
- Checking only the mini PC’s specification: the far-end port and every intermediate segment must support the desired mode.
- Changing several variables at once: swapping the cable, port, driver, and settings together prevents you from identifying the cause.
- Forcing a speed on one endpoint: Intel warns that a forced setting paired with auto-negotiation can produce a speed/duplex mismatch.
- Assuming Cat5e text proves the installation is good: the cable must be physically sound and correctly terminated, and the connected port still has to support 2.5GbE.
- Installing a generic package first on an OEM system: use the mini PC maker’s driver and BIOS for the exact model when those packages exist.
- Buying a multi-gigabit switch before testing: a new switch will not fix a bad cable, an incompatible far-end port, or a mini PC that fails on a direct known-good link.
A practical stop point
Stop troubleshooting the mini PC and address the network hardware when a second device proves that the cable or switch port cannot exceed 1Gbps. Stop troubleshooting the network path and escalate the mini PC when it alone remains at 1Gbps on a direct, confirmed 2.5GbE connection after Auto Negotiation, the OEM driver, and the OEM BIOS are current. This boundary keeps a normal link-partner limitation from being mistaken for a computer failure, while still identifying the evidence needed for a warranty or hardware diagnosis.
