When a GPU server slows after several minutes of compute or inference, start with telemetry—not a temperature guess. Confirm that the workload is still active, record GPU and memory temperatures, power, clocks, utilization, and the active clock-event reason at one-second intervals, then compare those readings with the limits reported by that exact GPU model. This sequence separates an intentional power cap from thermal slowdown, an external power brake, and multi-GPU coordination before you change hardware or firmware.
Why a sustained slowdown is not automatically a fault
“Throttling” describes a change in performance, not a single failure mode. A GPU can lower clocks because its configured power target has been reached, because a thermal limit is being approached, because the server asserted an external power brake, or because a group of GPUs is being synchronized to the slowest member.
NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation states: “When power management is enabled the GPU limits power draw under load to fit within a predefined power envelope by manipulating the current performance state.” In other words, a power cap can lower clocks by design. The first question is therefore not “Is the GPU too hot?” but “Which limit or event is active when throughput or latency changes?”
1. Confirm the symptom and capture a baseline
Record the operating context
Write down the server model, exact GPU model and count, driver version, management software version, workload, start time, and the point at which throughput or latency changes. Include whether the job is compute, training, rendering, or inference, and whether the slowdown repeats after the workload is stopped and restarted. A reproducible time reference lets you align GPU telemetry with system and chassis logs later.

Measure idle and loaded behavior
Capture each GPU at idle and again while the real sustained workload is running. At minimum, collect utilization, power draw, GPU temperature, and SM and memory clocks. NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi monitoring documentation lists these metrics, but the fields exposed depend on the device. Do not assume that a field available on one board is supported on another.
A simple one-second sample for commonly supported fields is:
nvidia-smi --query-gpu=timestamp,name,temperature.gpu,power.draw,clocks.sm,utilization.gpu --format=csv -l 1
Use the command as a starting point, not as a guarantee that every field exists on your card. Add memory temperature and throttle-reason fields only when the device and installed management software report them. Save the output to a file so the first performance drop can be compared with preceding readings rather than reconstructed from memory.

Watch the thermal-margin trend
Where supported, treat temperature.gpu.tlimit as a margin to the hardware slowdown limit. NVIDIA’s runbook identifies a value shrinking toward zero as the signal to watch. The trend matters: a steadily narrowing margin that reaches the slowdown event at the same moment clocks fall is stronger evidence than a high-looking temperature number from an unrelated instant.
Align telemetry with application metrics
Record throughput, tokens per second, frames per second, batch time, or request latency beside the GPU samples. Mark the exact second when performance changes. Then ask whether power, temperature, clock frequency, utilization, or the active reason changes first. If utilization drops because the application becomes input-bound, that is a different problem from a GPU clock reduction while the workload remains saturated.
3. Read the active clock-event reason
Do not infer the cause from temperature alone. NVIDIA documents separate reasons for software power capping, software thermal slowdown, hardware thermal slowdown, hardware power brake, and synchronized boost. The active reason identifies what the driver or hardware says is constraining clocks.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Reported reason | What it means | Evidence to collect next |
|---|---|---|
| Software power cap | Power management is reducing clocks below the requested level to stay within an enforced target. | Current and requested clocks, measured power, configured power limit, and enforced power limit. |
| Software thermal slowdown | GPU or memory temperature is above the relevant maximum operating temperature recognized by software. | GPU temperature, memory temperature when supported, thermal margin, and the model’s reported temperature limits. |
| Hardware thermal slowdown | The hardware considers temperature too high and has reduced performance to protect the device. | Temperature and margin trends, chassis airflow and fan telemetry, and system-management events. |
| Hardware power brake | An external power-brake signal has been asserted, such as a system power-supply or platform protection event. | Server power-path status, PSU and chassis logs, platform alerts, and the time-correlated GPU event. |
| Synchronized boost | A GPU group is limited to the frequency achievable by the slowest GPU in that group. | Clocks, temperatures, limits, and active reasons for every GPU in the group. |
A hardware slowdown event can be associated with high temperature, an external power brake, or power draw that triggers fast protection. It is therefore a prompt to correlate several signals, not proof that the GPU core temperature alone is responsible.

4. Separate a designed power cap from a thermal problem
Compare measured draw with the enforced limit
When a software power-cap reason is active, compare measured board power with both the current/requested limit and the enforced limit. NVIDIA’s documentation and DCGM material describe clock throttling when an enforced board-power target is crossed. If draw reaches that target while temperatures remain comfortably below the device’s reported limits, the lower clock may be the intended behavior of the server’s power budget.
A power limit can come from deliberate configuration, a rack or chassis budget, or a platform policy. Raising it without checking the server’s electrical and cooling design can create a different failure. Treat the limit as an operating constraint until you establish that it is misconfigured or unexpectedly low.
Check thermal and memory signals independently
Software thermal slowdown points to GPU or memory temperature above the relevant maximum operating temperature. Hardware thermal slowdown indicates that the hardware protection path has acted. Check both the GPU-core reading and memory temperature when the product supports it. A normal-looking core value does not rule out a memory-temperature issue, while the absence of a memory sensor does not prove that memory is cool.

NVIDIA notes that temperature readings and temperature limits are not supported on all products. Use the thresholds reported for the exact model and software stack. There is no universal “safe” temperature at which every GPU server behaves the same way.

5. Use the device’s own limits instead of a universal cutoff
Record the model-specific maximum operating temperature, hardware slowdown limit, and thermal margin exposed by the management interface. Carry the qualification with every reading: identify whether it is a GPU-core value, a memory value, a margin, or a power limit, and whether the field is supported on that product.
Interpret the timeline in this order:
- Performance change: identify the first second in which throughput falls or latency rises.
- Clock response: check whether SM or memory clocks fall below the requested level.
- Active reason: identify the software cap, thermal event, power brake, synchronized boost, or other reported constraint.
- Limit comparison: compare temperature, margin, and power with the exact device-reported thresholds.
- Persistence: determine whether the condition repeats under the same workload and clears when the workload stops.
Do not raise a thermal trip point merely to hide the symptom. NVIDIA’s Grace tuning guide recommends retaining defaults and warns that increasing a passive trip point can cause more aggressive hardware throttling. That guidance applies to Grace platforms; it is not a general setting recommendation for unrelated servers.
6. Inspect all GPUs and the external power path
Check for synchronized boost
On multi-GPU systems, inspect every card even if only one card was noticed first. NVIDIA’s synchronized boost feature can hold a group to the lowest achievable frequency. One GPU with a lower thermal margin, a lower power envelope, or a different active event can therefore reduce the apparent clock of otherwise healthy peers.

Compare per-GPU utilization, temperatures, power, clocks, limits, and active reasons in the same time window. A group-wide clock reduction with one outlier GPU often points to the outlier; a matching reduction with synchronized-boost activity points to group behavior rather than an isolated fan or thermal-interface issue.

Investigate a hardware power brake as a platform event
If hardware power brake is active, inspect PSU, chassis-management, and system logs with the server administrator or OEM. Look for power-supply assertions, input-power limits, protection events, or other platform alarms at the same timestamp. Do not classify this as a GPU-temperature problem without corroborating thermal telemetry.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Run controlled diagnostics after collecting evidence
For managed clusters, NVIDIA’s Data Center GPU Manager (DCGM) diagnostics can observe thermal, power, and related anomalies under realistic load. Depending on the DCGM release and device, diagnostics can record per-second power use, graphics and memory clocks, GPU temperature, power violations, performance, and NVML events. Fields and commands differ across DCGM 2.0, 2.3, and later releases, so use the documentation matching the installed version.
Choose a test duration that allows stabilization
DCGM’s targeted-stress guidance recommends at least 30 seconds of stabilization. Its performance test guidance specifies 60 seconds. These are diagnostic test recommendations, not universal thermal limits or evidence that every workload should run for exactly those durations. Run tests within the server’s approved maintenance window and thermal policy.
Interpret diagnostic failures carefully
A diagnostic can report temperature violations, power violations, clock or performance problems, and NVML events. It may fail because a target cannot be reached or a configured threshold is crossed. Preserve the test configuration, duration, device selection, and output with the telemetry captured from the production workload. A controlled failure that reproduces the same active reason strengthens the case for a platform or component investigation; a clean test does not disprove a workload-specific issue.
8. Correlate with the server before replacing parts
When telemetry shows actual hardware thermal slowdown or a power-brake event, correlate it with chassis airflow, fan speeds, inlet temperature, firmware state, driver state, and system-management logs. Check whether the event affects one GPU, one chassis zone, or the entire server. Also verify that the workload and driver versions have not changed between a fast run and a slow run.
Do not order a generic fan, thermal compound, GPU, or power supply for an unspecified server. Compatible parts and service procedures depend on the exact server model, GPU variant, cooling assembly, firmware, and power design. Identify the model and the confirmed failing path first, then involve the OEM or qualified service team with the time-correlated evidence.
Common diagnostic mistakes
- Using one snapshot: a momentary reading can miss the event. Keep one-second samples through the entire slowdown.
- Assuming one temperature threshold: sensor support and limits vary by product. Use the values reported for the exact GPU.
- Calling every clock reduction thermal throttling: check the active reason and measured power before drawing that conclusion.
- Ignoring memory temperature: memory may be the constrained component when a supported sensor shows a different trend from the GPU core.
- Checking only the first GPU: synchronized boost can couple cards, so compare the complete group.
- Raising trip points casually: on Grace systems, NVIDIA warns this can provoke more aggressive hardware throttling; retain defaults unless the platform documentation and service policy explicitly support a change.
- Replacing hardware before identifying the path: a hardware power brake may originate in the server power system rather than the GPU.
A practical decision checklist
- Confirm that the workload remains active when performance drops.
- Capture model, driver, workload, timestamps, utilization, power, temperatures, clocks, and active reasons.
- Compare the performance-change timestamp with the one-second telemetry trend.
- Check whether measured power reaches an enforced cap.
- Check GPU and memory temperature and thermal margin against model-reported limits.
- Classify the active event as software power, software thermal, hardware thermal, hardware power brake, synchronized boost, or another documented reason.
- Compare every GPU in a multi-GPU group.
- Use DCGM targeted diagnostics with the approved test duration and temperature policy.
- Correlate confirmed events with chassis, PSU, firmware, driver, and airflow logs.
- Escalate to model-specific service only after the telemetry identifies a component or platform path.
The useful outcome is not a generic temperature number; it is a time-correlated explanation of which limit acted, on which GPU, under which workload, and whether that limit was expected for the server’s design.
