Keep everyone outside the robot’s hazard area, then read the pendant or controller before touching cables or pressing Reset. An emergency stop, protective stop, safety-network fault, power loss, disabled enable state and ordinary Ethernet outage can all look like a “dead” cobot, but they require different remedies. Record the exact alarm first, identify which connection has failed, and use only the recovery procedure for the installed robot, controller and software version.
If the alarm specifically indicates communications, inspect the physical Ethernet path and compare the configured IP address, subnet and interface with the robot’s own manual and the integrator’s drawings. A successful ping or green status icon proves only limited network reachability; it does not prove that the robot application, engineering software or safety channel is available.
First, determine what “not responding” means
Do not reach into the cell or try to move an unresponsive arm while investigating. Stand outside the documented hazard zone and classify the symptom from the pendant, controller and external software. The failed path may be different from the one you first notice.

| Observed condition | Likely category to investigate | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency-stop message, broken stop chain or protective stop | Safety circuit, guard, stop device, safety controller or collision response | It is not evidence of a bad Ethernet cable |
| Controller or pendant is dark, or the arm is disabled and will not jog | Incoming power, controller state, pendant link, enable/run state or a blackout condition | A host computer showing a green icon does not prove the arm is enabled |
| Robot and controller are up, but an external PLC or supervisory system cannot connect | Physical network, IP/subnet, port, adapter, firewall or application configuration | It does not automatically indicate a robot hardware failure |
| Engineering software cannot connect while the robot answers ping | Software option, permission, service or application-specific configuration | Ping success does not prove engineering-software access |
| Safety communication timeout | Safety network noise, wiring, devices, monitoring settings or hardware | It is not an ordinary office-network timeout to be cleared casually |
Use the alarm wording to choose the branch. Examples of authentic on-screen labels include “Robot Connection Timeout,” “ROBOT COMMUNICATIONS LOST,” and “Ping robot via WAN but cannot access with RobotStudio.” The wording and recovery controls vary by manufacturer.

1. Make the cell safe and read the state
- Keep operators and bystanders outside the robot’s hazard area. If a person is inside, follow the site’s lockout/tagout and entry procedure rather than continuing remote troubleshooting.
- Do not bypass, jumper or disable an emergency-stop, guard, enable switch or safety communication channel to force motion.
- Read every visible status field on the pendant and controller: emergency stop, protective stop, safety stop, power, enable, communication and program state.
- Note whether the pendant responds, whether the controller display is alive, whether the arm has power, and whether only a host application is unresponsive.
A broken emergency-stop chain or a pressed stop device can prevent motion even when the network is perfect. Conversely, a network timeout can leave safety hardware healthy while an external program loses control. Treat the displayed state, not a single green light, as the starting evidence.
2. Preserve evidence before clearing an alarm
Photograph or transcribe the complete alarm text and code before pressing Reset, acknowledging the message or cycling power. Include the screen that shows status indicators, not just a shortened notification.
- Record the date and time, the preceding operation and what changed immediately beforehand.
- Note any power cycle, cable movement, switch replacement, IP change, program or software update, collision, guard opening or safety-device activation.
- Write down the robot, controller and pendant model, serial or machine identifier where available, and the exact software version.
- Preserve controller, robot and application logs or error reports before they are overwritten.
- State whether the pendant, controller, robot motion, PLC connection, engineering tool or one application is affected.
For example, Haas service guidance requests an error report and machine or cobot identifiers. Supplying those details at the first escalation avoids losing the conditions that caused the stop.

3. Check power, pendant and enable state
Confirm that the controller has its normal power indication and that the pendant communicates with it. Inspect documented status lights for the controller, robot and any interface box. A dark display, missing controller link or disabled arm must be resolved before treating the problem as an Ethernet fault.
Enable and run states are model-specific
A robot can appear online to a host computer while its motion is disabled, blacked out or not in the required run state. Haas troubleshooting, for instance, directs operators to inspect the pendant’s Run screen when a robot will not jog despite a green host icon. That is a Haas-specific example, not a universal button sequence. Other systems may require a documented enable switch, dead-man device, motor-on command or mode selection.

Check the installed manual for the permitted sequence and verify that no emergency-stop or protective-stop condition remains. Do not hold an enable device continuously or defeat it to test motion.
4. Inspect the physical communication path
Only after the robot’s state permits inspection should you examine the communications link. Follow the cable from the robot or controller to the switch, interface box, adapter or host.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm that both connectors are fully seated in the documented ports.
- Look for crushed, sharply bent, cut or contaminated cable jackets and damaged latches.
- Check link and activity indicators at the controller, switch and interface, while recognizing that a light indicates a physical link—not a working robot service.
- Verify that an installation-specific USB-to-Ethernet adapter or interface box is powered, recognized and connected to the intended port.
- If the manufacturer’s procedure allows it, test the cable or make a direct connection that removes an intermediate switch. Haas names a cable tester and a direct-connection test in one timeout path; those are diagnostic options for that installation, not mandatory purchases for every cobot.
Mitsubishi Electric documentation lists Ethernet disconnection as a communications-error cause and directs checks of the robot CPU/controller link. Replace a cable only after visible damage or a permitted test identifies it; a new cable will not fix an IP mismatch, missing software option or safety stop.
5. Verify addressing and network configuration
Compare the robot’s configured IP address, subnet mask and relevant interface settings with the model-specific manual, controller screen and integrator network drawing. Check the host, PLC and robot sides together.
- Look for duplicate IP addresses and addresses outside the intended subnet.
- Confirm that the cable is plugged into the port associated with the configured interface.
- Check any required gateway, service port, protocol, adapter or switch setting using the OEM instructions.
- After a recent network change, compare the current values with the last known-good configuration instead of guessing.
Never copy an address from another manufacturer’s example. Haas documents a matched address for its own package, while Mitsubishi identifies duplicate or out-of-subnet addresses as a separate controller fault path. An address that is correct for one robot can disconnect another device or create an unsafe conflict.

6. Separate reachability from application access
Test each layer separately and record the result: can the host ping the robot, can the pendant communicate with the controller, can the PLC establish its session, and can the engineering application log in? A failure at one layer does not identify the cause at another.
When ping works but the engineering tool does not
ABB’s RobotStudio troubleshooting describes a robot that responds to a WAN ping but cannot be accessed by RobotStudio because an option or permission is missing. Its checks are specific to RobotStudio, the robot configuration and the network’s public-access settings. Treat this symptom as an application or authorization problem until the relevant vendor procedure rules out those causes; do not replace cables solely because the engineering tool reports “not connected.”
When only a PLC or supervisory application fails
Check the PLC or application’s configured address, protocol and service state, then compare its error log with the robot alarm. A healthy pendant and controller with one failed external client points toward that client, an interface option or a network policy rather than a disabled safety circuit.
7. Treat safety communication faults as safety-system faults
A safety communication timeout deserves a more conservative response than an ordinary Ethernet disconnect. The safety channel may connect a safety controller, robot CPU, emergency-stop chain, guard device or other monitored hardware.
Mitsubishi’s CR800 Series troubleshooting lists network noise, wiring or connected devices, monitoring-time settings and possible hardware failure among checks for recurring safety communication timeouts. Follow the exact CR800 procedure for the installed controller and involve qualified maintenance personnel. Do not increase a monitoring timeout, silence an alarm or bridge a safety device merely to make the robot run.

When an emergency-stop chain is reported broken, inspect the documented wiring and devices with power isolated as required by site procedures. Haas guidance treats the stop-chain condition as a specific cause of disabled operation. A recurring safety alarm, unexplained stop or hardware indication warrants OEM or authorized-integrator service rather than repeated resets.
8. Reset or reboot only with the correct model procedure
Reset, acknowledge, activation, enable and power-cycle sequences are not interchangeable across cobots. Before using one, confirm that the cell is safe, the alarm permits a reset and the instructions match the robot, controller and software version.
Examples of version- and model-bound recovery
- Universal Robots software 10.6 error code C4 concerns communication loss between the Safety Control Board and motherboard. Its guidance includes checking the internal Ethernet connection, considering communication overload, completing the specified reboot sequence and checking for a software update. It is not a generic recipe for another cobot.
- Mitsubishi manuals describe model-specific power-cycle steps for certain communication-configuration errors. Use the named CR800 controller instructions rather than applying a generic “turn it off and on” sequence.
- A Haas timeout procedure may call for cable testing, a direct connection or checks of a USB-to-Ethernet adapter and robot enable state. Those controls apply to the documented Haas package and installation.
After a permitted reboot, wait for all controller and safety diagnostics to complete. If the same alarm returns, stop cycling power; repeated resets can erase evidence and leave an intermittent hardware or safety fault unresolved.

Common troubleshooting mistakes
Assuming a green icon means the robot is ready
A host indicator can show that a software session or basic link exists while the robot is disabled, blacked out or in a stop state. Always confirm the pendant and controller’s actual enable and safety status.
Using ping as a complete test
Ping tests network reachability at one layer. It does not validate RobotStudio or another engineering application, PLC protocol, permissions, robot options or safety communication.
Changing IP addresses by trial and error
Unplanned address changes can create duplicates, disconnect other equipment or violate the integrator’s design. Record the original values and use the model-specific configuration procedure.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Buying generic hardware before identifying the fault
An Ethernet cable, tester or USB-to-Ethernet adapter is useful only when the installation’s connector, category, shielding, interface and test procedure call for it. None of these items repairs a safety stop, missing option or controller hardware fault.
Clearing alarms without recording them
Resetting first can remove the most useful diagnostic evidence. Capture the complete screen and event context before acknowledging anything.
Practical decision sequence
- People safe? Keep clear of the cell and apply site isolation rules.
- Safety or stop indication? Resolve the documented emergency-stop, guard, protective-stop or enable condition; never bypass it.
- Power and pendant alive? Check controller, pendant and robot power and the permitted run state.
- Communication alarm? Inspect cable, ports, adapters and link indicators, then test as the OEM allows.
- Configuration correct? Verify IP, subnet, interface and protocol values against the installed documentation.
- Which client fails? Distinguish ping, pendant, PLC and engineering-application results.
- Safety timeout or recurring hardware error? Stop repeated resets and escalate with the preserved evidence.
This sequence keeps a communications symptom from masking a safety or power condition, while preventing a reachable robot from being mistaken for an application-ready robot.
