If a laptop review gives a benchmark score but does not explain how it was produced, treat it as an unverified result—not a reliable head-to-head comparison. A useful score needs context: the exact test and workload, the laptop’s configuration, software and power settings, and enough run details to judge whether the result is repeatable.
Why an unexplained benchmark score is hard to use
A benchmark score is not a universal unit like watts or kilograms. It is the output of a particular test and scoring system. The test name, version, workload, hardware and conditions are all part of what the result means.
For example, “PCMark score” is incomplete: PCMark 10, PCMark 10 Express, PCMark 10 Extended and PCMark 10 Applications are different tests. UL says each PCMark 10 benchmark produces its own score, and scores from different benchmarks are not comparable. UL’s reporting guidance asks reviewers to give the full test name and system details.

An office workload does not, by itself, establish gaming or content-creation performance. PCMark’s workload groups include Essentials, Productivity, Digital Content Creation, Gaming and Microsoft Applications, each aimed at different activities. What to check in the review
1. Exact benchmark, version and workload
Look for the benchmark suite and version, the full test or subtest name, and the workload. A score labeled only “PCMark” or “3DMark” leaves too much unknown to establish what was measured. Confirm that the workload resembles your intended use—office work, browsing, gaming, graphics or creative applications—and do not treat scores from different tests as if they share a scale.
2. The tested laptop configuration
Check the CPU, GPU, memory and storage, along with display configuration when it affects the workload or power draw. Laptop model names can cover configurations with different components, so a result for one version may not describe another. UL asks PCMark reporters to include the system hardware, operating system and relevant driver versions in its PCMark score-reporting guidance.

The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
3. Software, power and test conditions
Look for the operating system and relevant driver versions, the selected power mode, whether the laptop was plugged in, and any cooling or fan profile. Background activity and environmental conditions matter especially when the review makes claims about thermals. For a fair comparison, the reviewers should use equivalent settings on both machines or disclose the differences.

Its instructions are specific to that procedure, not a universal rule for every review. The page, published in 2025, also directs users to wait 15 minutes before rerunning several listed tests, including Cinebench R24, Procyon Office and 3DMark; do not generalize that interval to other benchmarks.

4. Whether the result measures peak or sustained performance
A short run can capture a burst of performance before heat builds. If a review makes claims about cooling, throttling or performance over time, look for repeated loops or a stress test and results showing behavior across the test. UL says 3DMark stress tests are designed to evaluate stability, cooling performance and thermal throttling; see its 3DMark stress-test guidance.
5. Battery workload and controls
Battery runtime is scenario-specific, not a fixed property of a laptop. Check what the system was doing, screen brightness, wireless settings, power mode and the test’s stopping condition. UL’s PCMark 10 Battery Life Profile has five scenarios—Modern Office, Applications, Video, Gaming and Idle—and runs each scenario individually on the same system. A result from one scenario should not be presented as a general runtime estimate. The profile is described in UL’s Battery Life Profile documentation.

6. Repeats, variation and anomalies
Find out whether the reviewer repeated the test, reported variation or explained unusual runs. UL says PCMark 10 score precision is usually better than 3% when its prescribed steps are followed on a consistently performing system in a controlled environment. That is UL’s statement about controlled repeated runs, not a guarantee that any published review is accurate or that scores from different test setups are interchangeable. See UL’s PCMark reporting guidance.

How to compare two laptop reviews fairly
Before ranking laptops by score, compare the evidence across these dimensions:
- Same test: the same benchmark suite, version and test variant.
- Relevant workload: a workload that answers the question you care about, such as gaming or office productivity.
- Comparable configurations: similar CPU and GPU tiers and memory, with meaningful differences identified.
- Comparable conditions: power profile, AC or battery operation, cooling mode and background activity, where disclosed.
- Same measurement type: a short peak score is not equivalent to a sustained loop; battery results need the same scenario and controls.
- Reporting quality: full test name, setup and software versions, repeat runs or variability, and disclosed anomalies.
If important dimensions differ or are unknown, call the results non-comparable rather than ranking the laptops by raw score. UL’s warnings about test selection and reporting support that distinction; see its PCMark reporting guidance.
Quick Recap
What to do when the review omits the method
- Use the score only as a limited clue. Do not treat it as a dependable comparison when the test, configuration or conditions are unclear.
- Check whether the review identifies the missing details elsewhere. Methodology may appear in a testing page or notes rather than beside the chart, but it should still be clear which test and setup produced the result.
- Look for another result with a disclosed method. Prefer a review that names the test, workload, tested configuration and conditions, and explains repeats or anomalies.
- Compare like with like. Use results only when the benchmark and relevant conditions align closely enough to support the comparison. Otherwise, separate the results instead of drawing a ranking from them.
