If an AMC laser screening looks unusually dim, soft, flickery or uneven, first confirm whether the show is 2D or 3D. For 3D, clean the theater-issued glasses and reseat them on your face. If the problem continues through bright scenes or affects the whole screen, tell an employee or manager during the show. Give the theater, auditorium, showtime, seat area and a precise description. Projection alignment, focus, cropping, optical cleaning and servicing are theater-staff tasks; do not attempt to adjust equipment yourself.
Start with the format: 2D and 3D can look different
Check your ticket, the showtime listing or the auditorium signage to confirm whether the presentation is 2D or 3D. A 3D presentation sends separate images through projection optics and viewing glasses, so the glasses, their fit and the auditorium’s 3D setup can affect perceived brightness and sharpness. The available technical guidance identifies configuration and optical checks but does not establish a universal percentage of brightness loss through 3D glasses.
If the show is 2D, there are no glasses to troubleshoot. Persistent dimness, broad softness, uneven focus, flicker or cropping should be reported to staff rather than treated as a normal property of laser projection.
Separate a dark movie scene from a faulty presentation
A single deliberately dark or stylized scene may be part of the movie’s creative grade. That possibility cannot be confirmed from one scene alone. Watch what happens when the film cuts to a bright exterior, a white subtitle, a title card or another high-contrast image.

- Likely presentation problem: the entire picture remains dim or out of focus across bright and dark scenes, or the same side of the screen stays softer than the other.
- Possible scene-specific effect: the issue appears only during one sequence and disappears when the movie changes location or lighting.
- Report either way when uncertain: staff can compare the presentation with their own checks and determine whether the symptom is repeatable.
Identify exactly what looks wrong
Use a concrete observation instead of saying only that the movie “looked bad.” Different symptoms point staff toward different presentation checks.

If it is 3D, check the glasses before escalating
Clean the viewing surfaces
Ask for another pair if the issued glasses have fingerprints, haze, smears or visible scratches. Use only the theater’s approved cleaning process or request staff assistance; do not bring household sprays or abrasive materials into the auditorium.
Seat the glasses correctly
Make sure the frames sit squarely over your eyes, not tilted, and that they are not being held several centimeters away from your face. If you wear prescription eyewear, position the 3D glasses as the theater’s design allows and ask an employee for a better-fitting pair if they cannot sit securely.

Do not buy generic glasses as a quick fix
Dolby’s guidance says glasses for 6P laser projection are optimized for each projector and directs purchasers to Dolby or the projector manufacturer for compatible models. A generic pair is therefore not an established remedy for one dim screening and may be incompatible with the auditorium’s system. The theater owns the relevant equipment and glasses inventory.
Tell an employee while the screening is running
Report the problem as soon as you can do so safely, ideally during a bright or high-contrast scene that demonstrates it. A manager or usher may be able to inspect the presentation while the feature is still running, document the auditorium and determine what options are available. Current refund, reseating or replacement policies are not established here, so ask what that location can offer rather than assuming a particular remedy.
Information to provide
- Name the theater location and auditorium number.
- Give the scheduled showtime and movie title.
- Identify your seat row or general seat area.
- State whether the presentation is 2D or 3D.
- Describe the symptom and its extent: whole screen, one side, subtitles, flicker, cropping or ghosting.
- Say when it began and whether it continues through bright scenes.
A useful script is: “The image has looked soft and unusually dim across the screen since the feature started. We are in Auditorium 7 for the 8:10 p.m. 3D show, near the center of the auditorium. Could someone check the presentation?” For an uneven image, say: “The left side is noticeably blurrier and darker than the right, while the center is clearer.”

What theater staff may investigate
Dolby’s cinema guidance for 3D presentations lists technical checks that include verifying the 3D configuration, projector setup, image alignment, cropping, cleanliness of optical elements, signs of dimming or flicker and regular servicing. These are technician or theater-operator tasks, not guest repairs.
- Configuration: whether the correct 2D or 3D format and projector settings are loaded for that title.
- Focus and alignment: whether the image is sharp and geometrically aligned across the screen.
- Framing and cropping: whether the selected aspect ratio or masking is cutting off intended picture or subtitles.
- Optical path: whether lenses, ports or other optical elements are clear and clean.
- Brightness and stability: whether the presentation is dimming, flickering or otherwise varying during playback.
- Maintenance: whether the system needs scheduled service or a corrective adjustment.
Do not enter a projection booth, touch the projector, clean a projection window or attempt to change settings. The guidance assigns those actions to trained personnel, and an improvised adjustment can create a new alignment or safety problem.
What “Laser at AMC” does—and does not—promise
AMC describes Laser at AMC as a laser-projection program intended to provide greater brightness and uniformity, along with improved contrast and color. That is a description of the technology and program, not a guarantee that every individual screening is correctly focused, aligned, clean or maintained.

AMC’s 2025 annual filing reports 2,951 Laser at AMC installations in the United States as of December 31, 2025. That is a company-reported deployment figure; it does not establish the current condition of a particular auditorium, screen, projector or show.
AMC also describes Dolby Cinema at AMC as using Dolby Vision laser projection. Dolby Cinema and standard Laser at AMC are distinct branded offerings. Read the specific format on your ticket or showtime listing instead of assuming that every laser-branded auditorium is Dolby Cinema.

If the same auditorium repeatedly produces the same symptom, include that pattern in your report. If only one show was affected, provide its exact time so staff can review the presentation log and determine what happened.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “laser” means flawless: the label describes projection technology, not the maintenance state of every show.
- Blaming all dimness on 3D: confirm the format and report persistent or extreme dimness; do not apply an unsupported brightness-loss percentage.
- Replacing glasses with a random pair: 6P laser glasses can be projector-specific.
- Waiting until the credits: reporting during the feature gives staff the best chance to observe the symptom.
- Describing only your discomfort: report whether the issue is global, localized, intermittent, cropped or confined to 3D ghosting.
- Trying to fix the projector: guests should not handle booth equipment, optical surfaces or settings.

- Check the listing: determine whether the show is 2D or 3D and note the auditorium.
- Observe a bright scene: decide whether the symptom persists beyond a deliberately dark sequence.
- For 3D, reseat or replace the glasses: ensure the lenses are clean and the frames sit squarely.
- Classify the defect: dim, soft, uneven, flickering, cropped or ghosted.
- Notify staff: provide theater, auditorium, showtime, seat area and the exact symptom.
- Follow the location’s instructions: ask what inspection, reseating or other remedy is available; do not assume a refund or replacement is automatic.
The practical rule is simple: a laser label is not a substitute for a correctly presented movie. Verify the format, check 3D glasses when relevant, document the specific symptom and give theater staff enough detail to investigate it while the show is in progress.
