An AI-generated website design is a draft, not proof that a site is usable, accessible, secure, lawful to publish, or technically complete. Before you adopt it, inspect the built pages—not just the preview—run representative user journeys, test on real devices, verify every asset and claim, and record fixes with retests. Automated scanners can find some problems, but knowledgeable human review is still required.
Why a polished AI preview is not enough
Generative tools can produce convincing layouts, copy, images, and interactions in seconds. A screenshot or clickable mock-up still says very little about whether the implemented site works. Links may point to placeholders, forms may fail silently, keyboard users may be unable to reach controls, and sample testimonials or business details may be fictional. An embedded service can also collect data that the design never discloses.
Judge the result as a product with real users and real consequences. Review the pages people will actually visit, complete the tasks that matter to the business, and keep evidence of what you checked. A useful review answers four questions:

- Do the important journeys work in success, error, and edge states?
- Do privacy, security, and external-service behavior match what the site claims?
- Do you have permission to publish every text and visual asset?
The process below is designed for an AI-assisted build, but it applies to any generated or heavily templated website.

1. Define the exact review scope
Start by writing down what “the site” includes. A homepage-only check cannot support a whole-site claim. The WCAG Evaluation Methodology (WCAG-EM) 2.0 begins with defining scope and exploring the product, then selecting a representative sample, evaluating it, and reporting findings. Use that structure even when you are not conducting a formal conformance evaluation.
List pages, versions, and dependencies
- Inventory templates and high-value pages: home, pricing, product or service pages, contact, account, checkout, search, help, and legal notices.
- Include each relevant language, regional variant, logged-in and logged-out state, and any mobile-specific version.
- List third-party content and services such as payment screens, analytics, maps, video, chat, scheduling, marketing forms, and authentication.
- Record the browsers, operating systems, screen sizes, and assistive technologies that your audience uses.
Choose complete user journeys
Write the tasks a visitor must be able to finish, not just the screens they might view. Examples include finding a telephone number, creating an account, resetting a password, requesting a quote, submitting a contact form, buying an item, downloading a document, or reaching a support service. Include the normal path and at least one failure path for every important process.
Sampling should represent different layouts and content types. WCAG-EM is guidance for evaluating a representative sample against WCAG 2; it does not prescribe a magical number of pages, and WCAG 2.2 defines conformance requirements for individual pages rather than a universal method for declaring an entire website conformant.

Read the rendered site as an editor and operate it as a customer. AI-generated copy often sounds plausible while making an unsupported promise or describing a feature that does not exist.

Verify every visible claim
- Replace placeholder text, invented addresses, sample phone numbers, fake reviews, stock “as seen in” logos, and unverified awards.
- Confirm prices, availability, delivery estimates, service areas, opening hours, guarantees, and performance statements with the responsible owner.
- Check headings, button labels, field instructions, error messages, confirmation messages, cookie notices, and legal links for plain, accurate wording.
- Make sure the language selector changes all relevant content and does not leave a mixture of translated and untranslated text.
Exercise the interface
Follow every navigation link and call to action. Open and close menus, dialogs, accordions, tabs, carousels, filters, and search. Submit forms with valid data, missing required data, invalid formats, very long values, duplicate submissions, and interrupted network connections. Confirm that errors identify the field, explain how to fix it, preserve entered data where appropriate, and produce a clear success state.
Inspect URLs after navigation, refresh important pages, use the browser Back and Forward buttons, and test deep links directly. A generated design may look complete while its routing, validation, or server-side handling is still a stub.
3. Evaluate accessibility with tools and people
Accessibility requires more than passing a scan. W3C Web Accessibility Initiative states: “No tool alone can determine if a site meets accessibility standards.” It also says, “Knowledgeable human evaluation is required to determine if a site is accessible.” See the W3C WAI Evaluating Web Accessibility Overview for the evaluation principles and user-involvement guidance.
Run an automated check, then inspect manually
Use an automated checker to identify detectable markup and presentation problems, such as missing labels, duplicate IDs, some contrast failures, invalid landmarks, or missing alternative text. Treat its output as a defect list, not a certificate. Tools differ in coverage and can report false positives or miss problems that depend on meaning and task context.

Manually verify at least the following:
- Headings and landmarks describe the page structure in a logical order.
- Informative images have useful text alternatives; decorative images are not announced as content.
- Every form control has an associated label, instructions, and understandable error feedback.
- All functions work with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus indicator and a sensible focus order.
- Text and controls have sufficient contrast, and information is not conveyed by color alone.
- Content remains usable when text is enlarged and when the viewport changes orientation or width.
- Dynamic updates, dialogs, menus, and status messages are announced and operable for assistive-technology users.
Include people and expertise when feasible
Ask an accessibility specialist or people with disabilities to perform representative tasks when the site is important, high-traffic, or legally sensitive. Their experience can reveal barriers that neither a code inspection nor a generic checklist detects. User evaluation complements, rather than replaces, a structured conformance assessment.
Use WCAG-EM for a repeatable report
For a formal or repeatable review, follow WCAG-EM’s five-part sequence: define scope, explore the product, select a representative sample, evaluate the sample, and report findings. Record the WCAG version and target level you used. WCAG-EM is an informative W3C Group Note and a methodology; it is not a replacement for the normative WCAG requirements or for ongoing quality assurance.
4. Test mobile, browsers, and real-world conditions
Do not infer responsive behavior from a desktop preview. Open the built site at narrow and wide widths, on touch devices and with a mouse or keyboard, using the browsers your audience actually uses.

- Confirm that tap targets are reachable, menus and dialogs fit the screen, and sticky elements do not cover focused content.
- Rotate a device, zoom the page, and use larger system text where supported.
- Try slow or interrupted connections and disabled scripts if those conditions are plausible for your audience.
- Verify that payment, authentication, media, maps, and other embedded services behave consistently across supported browsers.
These are observations of the implemented site, not promises that a design tool’s responsive preview guarantees production behavior.

5. Review privacy and security before launch
Map data collection and disclosures
Create a simple data map for every form and embedded service. Note what information is collected, where it is sent, who receives it, how long it is retained, and whether analytics, advertising, chat, video, maps, or fonts contact another provider. Compare that behavior with the privacy notice, consent controls, cookie settings, and product descriptions.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s technology privacy and security guidance advises developers to consider privacy and security implications and to be transparent about capabilities and practices. It is U.S. guidance for technology and apps; the legal requirements for your site depend on the jurisdictions, audiences, and data involved.
Apply a design-phase security review
Consider authentication, authorization, sensitive data, secrets, file uploads, administrative functions, external integrations, and exposure to untrusted networks. Check that generated code does not place credentials in client-side files, trust user input, or grant broader access than intended. Confirm that error messages do not disclose sensitive details and that administrative routes are protected.
The OWASP Secure by Design Framework checklist is a review aid for documenting security decisions and evidence. Revisit the review when a change affects security characteristics—for example, adding an integration, exposing a new network endpoint, handling more sensitive data, adopting a new technology, or changing a core workflow. Higher-risk systems may need a qualified security review tailored to their stack and threat model.

6. Verify the rights and provenance of every asset
Keep a provenance record for text, illustrations, photographs, icons, fonts, logos, video, audio, code snippets, and data. For each item, record its source, creator or provider, license, attribution requirement, permitted uses, territory, expiry, and the project or account that obtained it.
Do not assume that an AI tool’s inclusion of an image or passage gives you permission to publish it. Replace assets with unclear origins, obtain a license, or get written permission before launch. Preserve invoices, license files, prompts, model terms, and edits where they help establish what you received and how you used it.
Copyright treatment of generative output is not a single worldwide rule. The U.S. Copyright Office is examining both the copyrightability of AI-generated outputs and the use of copyrighted works for training. Its Copyright and Artificial Intelligence page identifies Part 2 on output copyrightability as published January 29, 2025, and describes Part 3 on generative-AI training as a pre-publication version released May 9, 2025. Those materials and applicable law can change; obtain jurisdiction-specific advice when ownership, licensing, or commercial exposure matters.
7. Record findings and make a launch decision
A review is useful only when another person can understand what was tested and what remains open. For each finding, record:
- the URL, template, language, device, browser, and account state;
- the exact steps to reproduce the behavior;
- what you expected and what happened;
- the user impact and severity;
- the owner and planned fix;
- the retest date, evidence, and final result.
Set a release rule before you are under deadline pressure. Block launch for issues that prevent an essential task, expose personal or security-sensitive data, mislead users, violate an asset license, or create a serious accessibility barrier. Track lower-risk polish items separately so they do not obscure launch blockers. After code generation, template edits, content changes, or new integrations, rerun the affected journeys and accessibility checks rather than assuming the previous result still applies.
Which evaluation approach should you use?

When selecting a tool, auditor, or service, ask what pages and flows are covered, which WCAG version and target level are used, whether complete processes are tested, how automated and manual work are combined, what the method cannot assess, and whether findings are documented and retested. W3C WAI’s directory contains information on more than 100 accessibility tools; that directory is not an endorsement of any listed vendor, and a listing does not establish conformance.
A practical release gate
Approve an AI-generated design only when you can show evidence for the actual implementation: representative pages and complete journeys were tested; content and claims were verified; keyboard, screen-reader, resize, contrast, and responsive behavior were reviewed; data flows and security assumptions were documented; asset permissions are recorded; and every material defect has an owner, disposition, and retest result. If you cannot produce that evidence, treat the design as an unapproved draft and continue review before publishing.
